Files in my trash bin which I didn't put

I noticed there are file in my trash bin which I didn't put. Pictures folder files and sometime document files. Did I somehow got infected by virus....

No, you don't have a virus.
Are these items inside a folder called "Recovered files"? If so, they're just temporary files that were left in the temporary folder by some app and cleaned up to the trash on a restart. If you're seeing original files somehow being moved to the trash, you may be accidentally triggering the "move to trash" keystroke (command-delete).

  • Cannot move files to the trash bin

    Hello,
I recently upgraded from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and have since also changed the administrator on our MacBook Pro. My account (formerly the admin) can no longer move files to the trash bin. My wife's account (now admin) has no problem doing so. When I try dragging a file to the trash I get "Finder wants to make changes, type the administrator's name and password to allow this."
Not something I wan't to be doing every time. Please help.
    Thanks,

Thanks for your reply. The permissions looked fine.
Here is the fix I found at http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/trash.html which worked:
    If the affected account is:
    Then type the Terminal command:
    Your Admin account:
    sudo rm -ri ~/.Trash
    Another user account:
sudo rm -ri /Users/user_name/.Trashwhere user_name is the short name of the affected account.
    Warmly,
    Olivier

  • I have sent a file to the trash bin. When I come to empty the trash bin everything goes out except this one particular file and I get a note saying the file is 'in use' but it is not. How can I delete this file from trash?

I have a Macbook Pro with OS X Lion 10.7.2. I have sent a work file to the trash bin along with many other files. When I empty the trash this one particular file remains and I get a message that this file is still in use. I have tried returning the file to my documents, opening it, closing it and then sending it to trash and again I try to empty trash but the same message comes up - Q - How can I trash this file permanently?

First just try logging out and back in.  Whatever is holding on to it may not be running after the logout thus freeing it so you can trash it after logging back in.
You might also try Trash It!

  • Files inexplicably in Trash?

I've noticed over the past week or two that a lot of files are winding up in my Trash Bin and I didn't put them there. A lot of Final Cut Pro auto saves in particular as well as some photo's and Garage Band recordings. I'm baffled.
I've also got the "Recovered Files" folders in there but I understand that I can get rid of those.
Any clue why these other files might show up in my Trash all by themselves? I'm afraid to delete until I finish the related projects.

The "Recovered Files" are typically generated during a boot or normal system maintenance and (on my system at least) the folder is normally empty.
My understanding is that they are files that may have been open when the system closed/crashed or the maintenance occurred. AFAIK it is safe to delete the folder.
I don't know about the other files, but my guess is that some programs that create 'backup files' automatically, often use the same name over and over - therefore they need to delete the previous one before they can make the next. Rather than just remove the files completely, they are moved to the 'trash' (which can take multiple files with the same name).

  • HT1526 deleting selected files (only) from trash

How do I securely and permanently delete selected files from the trash bin?

You shouldn't put files you may want to keep in the Trash.  It's not a storage location.  Make a separate folder on the Desktop.  I used to have one that I named Waste Basket (I even gave it a special icon).  I put files there when I wasn't 100% sure about deleting it, but I wanted to get it out of the way.
But to answer your question, there is no way selectively delete what is in the Trash.  You'd have to drag the items you want to keep out of the Trash, empty the Trash, and drag them back into the Trash.

  • IS there anpossible ways to retreive a file after it was erased and emptied trash bin?, IS there anpossible ways to retreive a file after it was erased and emptied trash bin?

Is there any possible way to retreive an erased file aftyer emptied trash bin?

Buy a disk drive. Use TimeMachine. Put a 2nd partition that you use to clone your system.
Have 2-3 sets of your files: active working files, backup #1 and backup #2

  • Recovered files folder in trash on startup?

Hi um.. howcome when I turn my mac on theres sometimes a folder called Recovered files in my trash bin? is my Laptop not holding onto data?

*A folder called Recovered Files appears in my Trash*
One or more Recovered Files folder may appear in your Trash after restarting your computer. The recovered files are temporary files used by Mac OS X applications. Usually temporary files are deleted by an application when it no longer needs them. If an application quits unexpectedly, the temporary files may not get deleted by the application. When you restart your computer, Mac OS X moves these temporary files to the Trash.
You can retrieve useful files by dragging them out of the Trash. In most cases, however, the temporary files are not important and it is safe to empty your Trash. Check with the manufacturer of the application if you are not sure.

  • Very strange.  In iPhoto '11, cannot find my Trash bin under RECENT category - -need to retrieve missing photos.

Hello.  I have been trying to solve this for quite some time on my own.
I've been using iPhoto for years, and get all the upgrades.  Working with iPhoto tonight, trying to set up two new Albums, it added my entire iPhoto library into the first new Album I created.  When I deleted that, then I tried to create another new Album, this time it added 26 photos from a different Album.  Very strange.  I deleted that new Album, too.  When I went back to the date and photos I was originally looking at, I noticed the two I was going to place in the new Album were missing.
That's when I looked up for the Trash bin, which I've usually found under the RECENT category, but now is entirely gone.
    Oh no...
I don't understand what is going on.  If anyone has any clues, I would be most grateful for your insight.

    Hello Terence,
Thanks for your rapid response.  To answer your question, under RECENT, I currently see Last Import, Last 18 Months, Flagged, and...
Well, this is wonderful, the Trash is back again, right where it was before.  I have also checked the photos that were missing, and they are back right where they were supposed to be.
Now I am wondering if this is a  iPhoto '11 problem in general, since I noticed there were quite a number of other entries on the iPhoto discussion page  on similar subjects, ranging from Trash trouble to missing photos this evening.  Might there be anything to this?
It is great that in my case, it's all been restored.  Next time, I will just quit iPhoto and re-open it again.  Perhaps even restarting my Mac might well have been a good enough idea.
That was a close call.  Thanks very much.

  • Kernel 2.6.15 trash bin fail?

Removed many files during pkgbuild via trash.
Verified that the trash bin is empty, but when I call.. find files...xyz I find a reference to them in...root/.local/trash/share/
Suspect this causes the pkgbuild to access corrupt files, these files being the tar.bz2 being built.  They are corrupted when removed from /var/abs/local src file after aborted pkgbuild.  They do not delete upon the move to trash call but require a second ...move to trash call..after first receiving a rename advisory message.
What might be wrong with this delete method?

Did you do a secure empty trash? SHIFT COMMAND DELETE, they will be over wriiten. Are you deleting docs as they aren't much space, videos, pictures, music use much more space.
You can move those fiels to an external "archive" drive to save them then delete them from your internal drive.

  • Hard Drive is full.  Didn't empty trash bin but can't see deleted files.

My MBP Retina is warning me that hard drive is full.  I have deleted large files, but they don't appear in trash.  Can't see them in folder either.  But memory issue persists.  Never emptied trash bin, but still can't see them.

I have the same problem. My hard drive is full and my trash appears empty. When I drag items to trash it makes the sound but the file doesn't delete and or appear in the trash can. I've tried holding down "option" to empty, going to Finder and holding "shift+command+option" but nothing happens.
