Files not in Finder, but in iTunes

This is a strange problem I cannot solve and has only come up recently.
I have downloaded music files/folders to an external hard drive and cannot see the files via Finder.
The issue is when I go to iTunes and Add to Library the files are there in the folder to be added.
What makes this even more bizarre is that the files available to Add to Library in iTunes are only recent files in the folder. None of the older files are available to add.
This makes me think this may have been due to a software update but unsure.
My goal is to be able to see the new files in Finder
Any suggestions are appreciated

Maybe we're onto it now, is the Disk really named "Free Agent-2", or "Free Agent"?
In finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 or 2 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 and/or 2, and reboot.

  • IPhone SDK: How to have application files not be backed up by iTunes?

We are writing a set of files to the tmp directory on the device, with the expectation that iTunes will not back it up. However, we are seeing that those files are backed up on the host computer.
    The following documentation:
    http://developer.apple.com/iphone/library/documentation/iPhone/Conceptual/iPhone OSProgrammingGuide/ApplicationEnvironment/chapter6_section3.html
    says:
"tmp/ — The application writes any other temporary files here. The application is responsible for cleaning up all files created in this directory; there is no automatic cleanup mechanism. Backup operations ignore the contents of this directory."
A sample value returned by NSTemporaryDirectory() is:
    /private/var/mobile/Applications/65BED698-7789-41A0-A9BC-06BBDC5EB654/tmp
For which we are saving our files in:
    /private/var/mobile/Applications/65BED698-7789-41A0-A9BC-06BBDC5EB654/tmp/NSData /080702c
However, when the device is disconnected and reconnected to the computer, and iTunes does a backup, we can see the files from tmp being transferred to a backup directory, eg.:
    ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/fb0a4b743a3c826d3146e0e34a9aa16e3c11eb0c
    Our questions are:
    1. Is the documentation correct about tmp not being backed up?
    2. Are we getting the path to tmp correctly?
    3. Is there something we can do or set to get tmp to not be backed up?
    4. Is there another directory we should be using for data files which need to persist between application launches but not be backed up?
    5. We have noticed that the path returned by NSTemporaryDirectory() is not the same as that formed by adding "tmp" to the path returned by NSHomeDirectory(); the former is /private/var/mobile/Applications/.../tmp while the latter is /var/mobile/Applications/.../tmp. Yet writing files to either seems to put them in the same place - are symbolic or other links being used to make these paths refer to the same directory? Which one should developers use?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and help.

Partly to bump this but also to restate the question in less detail we a) want to save a number of text files for our app to use as a cache when it's relaunched, and b) don't want those files to be backed up by itunes when the iphone/touch is synced with the computer. How to do that?
We thought the "tmp" directory within our application's sandbox would be the place for that, however, itunes is backing up the files we put there.
Any ideas or suggestions much appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Invisible Folder/File(s) in Finder, but visible in Terminal

Me and my father run 10.4.11 on our Dual G5 machines and are experiencing some strange behaviour of the Finder in the last weeks.
Folders and single/multiple files have gone "missing" in the Finder, but they do exist (I checked with the Terminal). And no, there are no special flags or permissions set on them or anything else. When we tried to create new folders/files, the Finder says he can't because there is already an item named like that, so it's just the display of the Finder, that doesn't work.
And it's not limited to internal hard drives, but also appears on my father's network drive by LaCie, he's accessing with the Finder (AFP) and is a default HFS+ volume also.
Any attempts to get this fixed with the disk utility failed, so help or at least some more information to fix it would be appreciated.

OK, I got my folder fixed with "FileSheriff". But why was it invisible, after all? Afaik in unix all files beginning with a "." are invisible and therefore are not displayed in Finder windows, so far so good. Don't tell me, that Apple does still permit the setting of some old System 6-9 flags on files and folders via the Carbon framework, that would interfere with some unix concepts? Then I guess it's some HFS thing?

  • External Hard Drive not in finder, but in Disk Utility, info gone? recover?

My external hard drive shows up in disk utility, but not in finder. Usually, in disk utility, there will be visible the model/make of the hard drive (such as 232.8 GB MDT MD25...etc), and then below that, there be the actual name of the hard drive that I gave it (such as Jack's External Hard Drive). In disk utility, it only has the first one (the MDT... name) and not the other.
How do I fix this situation? Is my hard drive dead? I don't think it is dead because I can hear it spinning and it shows up partially in disk utility. Oh and by the way, it doesn't give me the option of repairing the disk.
    Thanks

Alright, so I bought an external hard drive enclosure. The screeching noise is gone. Disk Utility sees the same "232.9 GB MDT MD25..." stuff, but now also "sees" "ROCK" which is the name I named the hard drive. But the lettering in "ROCK" is gray, not black. Also, its not showing up in finder. When I start up the computer with the ROCK hard drive on, finder says something like, "The disk you have connected was not readable by this computer." I try to verify disk in Disk Utility but it says "Disk Utility Stopped Verifying ROCK because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
So buying the enclosure, helped, but it seems the hard drive is damaged or the information is corrupt or something.
What is the problem I am having? (Is it not mounting or is the data bad or whats going on?)
Is there something I can do right now that can make this all better?
My last resort will be to try data recovering software (last resort because it costs around $100).
Thanks for all your help so far everyone.

  • Deployment utility gives file not found warning, but build completes succesfully.

When running the deployment utility, I am able to analyze source files successfully; no problems there.  When I go to build, all appears to go well until I click the popup that has the message: "The build is finished."  After closing the popup, I get the following warning:
"Warning: This problem will cause an error when building a deployable image or an installer. The following file(s) were not found:"
It's followed by a list of dozens of files.  However, I verified that all files are included in the search directories.
I installed the deployment as-is and it seems to run ok; it finds the files it's supposed to.  However, I'm going to have a hard time selling this procedure off to QA if the deployment shows a 'file not found' message.
My question is: why do I get the 'file not found' warning during the deployment build process, yet the 'analyze source file' step finishes ok and the deployed files work ok?

These files are all relative and are part of the workspace.  I did find a
    workaround to the problem.
In the search directories selection box, the top-level entry is "Current
sequence file" with subdir search enabled.  The next entry is the workspace
directory with subdir search enabled; all files are in subdirs of the
workspace directory.  The remaining entries are unchecked or not
user-defined (ie.: other NI directories on my computer).  In order for the
deployment to work, I had to enable the third entry on the list: "Initial
directory" along with subdir enabled.  However, the initial directory is
the same as the workspace directory (since I opened teststand by
double-clicking on my .tsw file).  What I don't understand is why should it
matter that I have initial directory on the path if it's the same as the
    entry before it?

  • Protected AAC music/files not playing or appearing in iTunes purchases

Any purchases which I made from itunes during 2007/08 which were protected AAC files will no longer play on my pc (nor download to my ipod).  I get multiple 'This computer is not authorised to play....Would you like to authorise it?' When I authorise it, it tells me that 'This computer is already authorised (2 out of 5)'.  But the track will not play and again asks for authorisation. The tracks that will not play are all 'Fairplay version 2'. I thought about deleting them and downloading them again as I understand that Apple no longer encripts files, but they do not appear in my previous purchases in my itunes account (no purchases before 2011 appear?) - so I assume that I cannot download them again. So i have the tracks in my library, the 'info' says that they are registered to my itunes account, but it seems that because they are encripted I cannot play them.  Help please!!

I am having what seems to be the same problem as Julie described. After purchasing an album on itunes, I created a CD-R disk that will play on the computer but not on any of several players I tried. The CD shows (Get info) each tune to be an MP-4. In ITunes...the tracks are shown as AAC protected...I don't know the difference.
It appears Julie solved the problem by your suggestion to go to iTunes preferences...I tried that Pref>Advanced>Burning>and selected Audio CD and burned a second disk....actually I didn't change anything because my preferences were already set that way.
I would never buy anything else from iTunes that I cannot play on my home system. this has been a frustrating matter and I guess what I am asking is there a pausible solution?
    To your questions:
Play on home CD player: message: No audio...although the Cd plays on the computer ok.
    Media used: Memorex CD-R
Brand of players: Sony DVD player 1.5 years old & Cyberhome 1 year
    Operating System 10.3.9
    iTunes 5.xx
Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
    thanks,

  • Write to text file; not overwriting old, but moving to next entry and writing

I am interested in writing a series of filenames, to a text file, so I can keep track of sample ID and experiment #'s. I would like each new filename to be writtten following the previous filename, rather than always overwriting. I've done a brief check of some of the properties, and couldn't find anything. Any ideas? thanks

    Hey csmrunman,
Just to clarify, are you looking to append text to an existing file without over-writing existing text, or are you looking to create a series of text files with unique names?  If you want to append text to an existing file, then Andrey's solution above should be what you need.  If you want to programmatically determine a unique name for the text files, then you can use a similar means to deterine a unique name (Andrey used the iteration terminal above so that each iteration of the while loop produces a unique text to be inserted into the text file).  You mentioned the use of sample ID and experiment number, which you could also use as a file name if you wish to, and even have the user of the VI enter the information that makes up the filename through front panel controls.  The string functions (in the Functions Palette under Programming » String) will be of great use here.  Of course, if you are just looking for an “out-of-the-box” solution, there is always the Write to Measurement File Express VI (Programming » File I/O), but this is best suited for situations where you have channels of data that you would like to store, so this may not fit depending on the data you wish to store.  If it does fit, however, there are settings that you can configure for saving to a series of files:

  • CS4 .ai files not recognized, Finder sees PDF

    Okay.
This is an annoying thing, but I hope to find the fix.
Mac: 2 x 3 Ghz Quad-core Intel Xeon, 2 gb ram (i am wishing for more)
    OS: 10.5.6
    Prog: Adobe Illustrator CS4
Here's the thing. I have saved a my files for years with the "make file PDF compatible" to use them in InDesign.
Now ... when I had 10.4, the files worked fine. Now that Im 10.5.6, however, I have seen a strange thing. I'll take a file that has had the "make file PDF compatible" checked when it was saved (a few thousand+ files over the years, mind you) and when I double click it to open, Finder opens the file in either Acrobat or Preview. Darnit!
I can right click and "Open With" each file, but that is annoying. I know there is either a very simple fix to this or a complicated one. I remember back in the OS9 and below era you could open up a "Extension Manager" and tell conflicting programs to open specifically the files you wanted. Is this a OS question (and should be posted over on Apple's Forum) or is this a Illustrator problem?
I DO want to keep the PDF compatibility because of my use of AI files in InDesign. Any ideas?

    Hello Dale,
If you are talking about not seeing the Icon preview, is 100% Adobe's failure.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b81128/4
But if you are talking about opening illustrator files with extension ".ai" (even when you save them as PDF compatibles); you can change the default settings of Apple OS.
Select any document from "Finder" with extension ".ai"
"Finder" Main Menu: "File" + "Get Info" (a New window will pop-out)
In this new Info Window, go down to "Open With" and selected from the drop-down menu "Adobe Illustrator CS4" and select "Change All".
This action should correct the problem. However, Apple has shown instability of this type of setting depending of the Mac you have.
About who is responsible of these discrepancies, is shared blame between Apple OS and Adobe Softwares.

  • Files Missing in Finder but Listed in Terminal

I have a bunch of Videos on an External Drive. When I double click them to open, they disappear suddenly. However, QuickTime launches and even Plays the file
The missing files show up in Terminal.
Copying the Videos folder does not solve this. Finder does not see these files even after setting it show show Hidden Files.
I have unmounted the drive, remounted it, restarted my computer, but no luck.
How do I get Finder to show my missing files again ?

For some reason, I now see all my files in Finder.
I have no idea why or how this happened.
I hope to move on from this experience now.

  • Hidden files appear in finder but I can't see them on my desktop

I have been having this recurring issue where when I have a Finder window open, I can see several files when I click on my my desktop sidebar icon, but when I try to find them on my desktop they do not show up anywhere. What is going on? Is it something I did/didn't enable or a bug?

    Hi,
I am having this issue too. I can, for example, save a Word doc as a PDF to the desktop but it never appears. If I go back to Word it says 'do you want to replace the file of the same name?', And if I do this a couple of times it will appear.
There are quite a few similar responses online about this but no definitive answer. Anyone got one?

  • Why is U51 blocking individual class files not in jars but U45 accepted them?

Let me answer the "why do you need individual class files?" question first. We have a rather large applet based application with a current client-side minimum jar download size of 1.8 MB. If we put ALL of our class files into jars, that size will probably double. Most users only use a small portion of the class files for their particular tasks. Which of the class files they use depends upon the tasks they perform. Having ALL users download ALL the classes, albeit compressed in jars, is extremely time consuming and a major problem after application updates due to the large number of users and the network load it would cause.
    Jar file manifest:
    Permissions: all-permissions
    Codebase: *
    Application-Name: MyApplication
    Application-Library-Allowable-Codebase: *
    Caller-Allowable-Codebase: *
    Trusted-Library: true
We have 11 directories with one containing the applet and main client application code. The other 10 directories contain class files relating to the various sub-applications in the system. The system has a third-party runtime jar file, too.
We have a private network and servers for our business so the exposure is small. This is a screen-scraping, reformattring application that does no real data processing so doesn't need the same security as a true data processing application. Since we are not open to the Internet and of limited security risk, we chose to keep a more simplified structure.
This all worked under 1.7.0_45. I read the security guide and it was my understanding that these attributes in the manifest would also work for U51. Apparently not. Looking at the guides, now, it appears they have been changed sometime last year regarding mixed-code to mean jars with certificates and jars without certificates. The support for individual class files appears to have been removed. If this is true, then there should have been a beta of the U51 code because the rules seem to have been changed since the last release or there is a new bug.

This is exactly my same problem. My app (and applet) is about 5 MB if I consider all the classes and libraries used by the app. (I mean 5MB is the size of the jar file). I can't ask customers to download 5 MB every time they want to access the program.
We need java ask code signing for the principal applet but then we must have the possibility to run single class files as needed.
    Help us all please.
    Thanks Paolo

I added a Playlist in iTUNES.  I use iCloud but after syncing my devide the playlist is not there.   How can I fix this?
Also the Icons for iCLoud that used to be there next to each song is gone.

Sounds like iTM may have gotten disabled in iTunes. Pull down Store > Enable iTunes Match to turn it back on.

  • What does it mean when it says 'firmware file not compatible?' after downloading itunes?

    AS ABOVE

I believe that it was in sleep mode, but my old Mac didn't do this.  When I came back to it after being in sleep mode, it would start right back up, none of this white screen delay before getting started.

    Hello Gunnie Smith,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried any of the basics yet like trying a different USB Cable if possible or plugging it into different USB ports on your Mac? Maybe try resetting the iPod with it connected to your system. To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, then press and hold the Select (Center) and Menu buttons together for a couple of seconds until the Apple logo appears. You may want to try this a couple of times.
Otherwise, I would work through each of the troubleshooting steps provided in this Apple support document although its not exactly your situation. However, the steps are applicable.
