Files not showing up on external Drive

I'm having this really strange and irritating issue with my external hard drive in 10.5.
I use a folder named "incoming" on an external usb HDD for all my miscellaneous downloaded files, but for some reason, when the transfer completes in the download application, the new files don't appear there. Similarly, when I unzip or create new files on this drive, they'll inevitably either disappear, or folders will appear empty.
Even stranger, I can actually see all these files and use them like normal if I open my external drive by typing "open /Volumes/Storage" in Terminal, but if I browse through Finder, half are missing.
I was using this drive in Tiger with no issues, it's HFS+ formatted and I've tried running Verify/Repair in Disk Utility to no avail.
UPDATE: Upon looking at the mount point of the drive in finder, it says it's mounted at "/Volumes/Storage 1". When I open that mount point in Terminal I can only see some of the files, but when I open "/Volumes/Storage" I can see all the files.

I have a customer also reporting this same issue with files copied to an external RAID not showing up in Finder, since the 10.5.2 update / Leopard Graphics 1.0 updates. Zapping PRAM fixed the problem temporarily but after a day it's come back. [This is only one of four identical iMacs updated in the same manner that is showing the problem].

  • Not all iTunes Files not showing up on External HDD

My old TC (the flat model from back to 2008 I think it was) broke down the other night so I removed the WD 2.0TB HDD (containing over 30'000 music files) to run this as an external HDD. I had swapped the original 500Gb with a 2TB drive which worked super for a couple of years.
Anyway, before all of this happened all songs showed up on iTunes and each single one could be played correctly from iTunes (without the ! should the file not be found) so all files were located through iTunes to the correct directory. Only one directory for my Music files...
Now, when I connect the HDD through an USB cradle (nothing has been touched on the drive) only a fraction of the files actually show up in the directory which is very odd indeed? I believe it was the same when the thing was actually working but didn't give it a think as it was doing what it was expected to do.
Next step was that I copied the whole HDD over onto my MAC and sizewise all (?) the files came over but still not all are showing...
So, how can I make sure all the files are being included as I want to move them all over to my new 2TB TC?

Thanks Limnos for taking your time with this.
    Here's what happened
    1) All my Music was stored on a TC 2.0TB WD hard disk which I shared with my partner.
    2) All music in iTunes were mapped to this specific location and only this location.
    3) When opening the folder on the TC only a fraction of the actual music folders were available to see (i.e. Artist The Wonder Stuff folder was present and in this folder only 2 album folders were found when in fact there should have been 12)
    4) All songs in iTunes did play correctly so if i wanted to listen to one of the The Wonder Stuff songs they would all play (even albums that did not show up in the artist folder from above).
    5) When clicking show file in finder, the file would show up and then again when going back manually into the folder as above.
    6) TC dies on me. No more power.
    7) Took out the HDD and put it in a cradle to extract the songs.
    8) Right click on the folder shows there are about 35'000 files which sounds right BUT only a fraction of these can be seen.
    9) Now I cannot do the show in finder through iTunes as the directory no longer exists (the TC died and I threw it away, except for the HDD).
    10) The files are on the HDD but I cannot see but a fraction of them when opening the folder...
I hope this makes it a little more clear.
I honesty do not know what to do as I know the files are there but cannot see them and thus map them in iTunes... :-(

  • IMovie files not showing up on iCloud Drive

I have uploaded several iMovies from my Mac (Yosemite OS) and they are accessible on my iPad and Apple TV.  Yet, the iMovie file on the iCloud Drive is empty.  Where are they stored?

  • Files not showing up in networked drive

I have mapped drives on a Windows 7 box. The server is running 2008 Standard.
We scan files into a mapped drive, but they don't immediately show up on other computers when opening the mapped drive. Is there a refresh rate?
If so, how can it be changed? It usually works if I have the user do a F5 or right click and click refresh.
    Allen

    Hi,
This issue may be caused by the Automatic refresh folder. You may kindly refer to the following steps:
    1.       Open your Windows Explorer, and click organize.
    2.       Click Folder and search Option.
    3.       Under the General Tab, please check the box before “Automatically expand to current folder”.
If the issue persists, please try to disable the folder Index, please kindly refer to the following steps:
    1. Click Start Menu, then type Offline files, then click Manager Offline Files in the search result.
    2. Then check whether you enable offline files, if so, please disable it to have a try.
In addition, can you advise me the following things:
    1. How other computers access the shares? Are they via mapped drive or access directly ?
    2. Are the new components able to be viewed immediately on the local computer ?
Also, please kindly try the following steps:
    1. Disable Remote differential Compression.
    2. Disable Auto-Tuning.
    3. Disable SMBV2.
Hi, I did the organize, folder / search option, as well as automatically expand...
They are NOT set up as offline files, I checked that.
All computers are mapped to the S: drive.  Some can see them right away, some it takes a reboot.  When I navigate (on any of the computers) using the UNC path, all files are visable.
As far as your last three steps, I don't understand what that means.  Also, a correction to my original post, F5 or refresh does not make them show up, only a reboot.
    Thanks,
    Allen

I am trying to connect my JVC Hard Disk Drive Camcorder to my IPAD 2 via the Apple camera kit. I am able to download photos, but video files not showing. Camera shows Mass Stoarge. How can I download videos please?

The file name only has 6 characters and I'm not sure what the .mod format is. So that's why they are not seen by the iPad.
Another way to transfer. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Hello! I am new to the MacWorld and I love I tunes! but I have bought TV shows and now I am running short of storage, Can I transfer my TV shows to an external drive, or if I erase them can I download them again since I paid for them?

    Hello!
I am nes to Mac computers and I love ITunes. I have bought some TV shows and I am running short of storage and I have some questions.
    1) Can I transfer my TV shows to an external drive?
    2) If I erase these files, can I download them again? I bought a movie I erase it to make space, but I went to the Itunes store again and it says I have to pay for it.
    3) Can use ICloud to store my TV shows? and how is it done if possible?
    Thank you so much!!

You can move the files to an external drive.  Delete the entry from your collection but don't let iTunes delete the file.  Copy the file to the external, then drag to iTunes to add it again.  Hold down the option key while doing this so the file doesn't get copied to the internal again.
Alternatively use: Dougscripts: Relocates selected files to a folder of your choice - http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=relocateselected - replaces "Move Files To Folder"  to move files.
    2) I wouldn't trust Apple or the media companies.  They could decide tomorrow to not allow a second download and you'd be stuck.  The media company could decide to pull an item from iTunes Store.  You are the only person who can be relied upon to ensure you always have access to your media copies.

  • Itunes is copying/converting 500gb of music from .wma to .m4a files that are on an external drive onto my laptop which doesnt have enough room. how do i reroute these newly converted files somewhere with enough space for them?

itunes is copying/converting 500gb of music from .wma to .m4a files that are on an external drive onto my laptop which doesnt have enough room. how do i reroute these newly converted files somewhere with enough space for them?
new to itunes, used windows media player before that and always ripped music directly to an external hardrive and accessed it through the player. now that i downloaded itunes it is taking from the external hardrive and copying a second file for each song onto my lap top hard drive which does not have the capacity for all my music. as itunes converts music files i want them saved back onto my external drive or another location i have space for rather than the lap top. how do i change the setting to move the itunes media folder to another location. assuming that hitting copy and past and dropping it in a random location will cause a few errors.

When I have done this, all I did was network the two machines and copy the contents of the iTunes folder to the other machine, and that's it.
My understanding (which may not be 100% correct) is that the one file that is absolutely necessary is iTunes Library, and that the XML file is actually a copy auto-generated from the iTunes Library, appearing in a different format only for non-iTunes apps that take advantage of the iTunes Library data.
As far as I know, if you simply have the Library (database) file and all your original music files, iTunes on that computer should operate as it did on your old computer. I believe that the Album Artwork, Genius Data, and XML files can be regenerated from the Library file. Not sure about the Extras file.

  • Opied files got corrupted in USB3 external drives connected to Macbook Pro, how to fix it?

I use USB3 connected external hard drives in my Macbook Pro mid 2012 (Yosemite 10.10.1) frequently. I had no problem until two months ago. This week I noticed a lot of corrupted files in one ext drive connected to USB3 port. Luckily  I have a backup, and I copied back the files. But the files copied recently were also corrupted even though source files are fine. I spent a whole day trying to fix it using different methods of copy and options, e.g. erasing the drive, using cp, rsync, ditto and a combination of their options. I figured out that if I use cp or cp - R for copying single file or folder, it works fine, but using of rsync, ditto or recursive cp or finder's drag and drop result into a lot of corrupted files in the target drive.  This is not the problem of external drive.  I was surprised to notice that all files are copied perfectly when I used a old macbook (2008 model, it only has USB2 port, and OSX Mavericks). Since I have almost 2TB data to write, USB2 is very slow. I want to use USB3 of Macbook Pro 2012, but I am very disappointed to find out that USB3 in Yosemite is causing the trouble, writing out corrupted files. If anyone has a solution to this problem, or a second thought, Please suggest.

Disk is formatted to Paragon NTFS

My guess here is there is some issue with the use of Paragon NTFS. Perhaps updating it or using another NTFS driver (like Tuxera, or its free alternative NTFS-3G) will work. All in all, using NTFS in write mode with these options will be using a non-supported approach for accessing your drive, which could lead to odd problems if Apple makes a change that interferes with the functions of these drivers. At other times, such drivers use inherently less stable approaches (such as the FUSE environment) that could lead to problems if not formatted correctly.
If your drive is working, and the formatting is checked out properly in Windows and other systems, then I'd suggest you check on your NTFS driver and update or replace it. Alternatively, if you only use the drive with your Mac, then consider formatting it to Apple's native Mac OS Extended. Lastly, if you use the drive with multiple operating systems, then consider using FAT32 or ExFAT as the format, as these are fully supported in OS X (unlike NTFS, which is only supported for reading).

  • IPhoto files not showing up in list

I have many photos on my new MacBook Pro, but when I try to "attach" them to emails, they are not showing up in the listing. I am a new Mac user, but so I don't know how to explain this. If this was a PC, it would be like files not showing up under "My Computer." PhotoBooth photos are listed though. Why is this?

Then something has happened to the permission and or attribute settings on your folders to mark files saved in them as hidden.
Try this Terminal command to show all files and you can turn it off by changing the true to false at the end of the command.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
If you then see your files tere is a problem with files being market as hidden when they are saved. Create a New Folder in the Root of the drive and look at its Get Info window and post a screen shot of it in this thread.

  • Deleting files permanently through LightRoom on external drive

My LR files are stored on an external drive and the drive is called Buffalo NAS and it has a "trashbox" for deleted files.  My IT says I should clean out the trashbox using LR and I can not figure out how to do this.  I do not want deleted files eating up hard drive space on the external.  This forum as been great for answering my other questions and I thank all in advance who might help with this.
    JWT

    Hi JWT
LR only manages the folders you have selected for import and development (editing).
If you want to use LR to delete “managed” folders it’s possible to select them in the Library (Folders tab) and then remove and optionally delete from your hard drive or NAS.

  • Time Machine tries to back up although not attached to an external drive...

I keep getting this error message when my Macbook Pro is not attached to an external drive:
    Starting standard backup
Error -35 while resolving alias to backup target
    Backup failed with error: 19
    (this is from timemachine widget)
I've even reinstalled the system software...
What can I do to stop getting that regular annoying message?

No, sorry, I meant 3rd-party apps specifically to alter Time Machine's behavior. Other, unrelated ones, shouldn't be involved.
Try this, with the TM drive ejected and disconnected:
From a Finder window's menubar, select +Go > Go to Folder+ and type /Volumes at the prompt.
That will show an alias for every connected volume. If it also shows your Time Machine volume, or anything else that isn't connected, see what it is.
Sometimes, in some sort of obscure circumstances, if OSX loses contact with a drive in just the wrong way, a process may not realize it, and instead of writing to a volume via that alias, it will instead create a folder and write to that. Your symptoms don't sound like that, but it's worth a look.

  • File not showing in SharePoint (IE) but visible in Explorer

I have a document library that has a single file not showing up that I can't seem to track down.  I am hoping someone here might be able to offer something I haven't thought of.
The document library is very much 'stock'.  Verisioning is turned on and minor revisions aren't viewable to folks without edit rights.  I am the admin with full control to everything - as is the user this initially impacted. The file will show
in the Explorer view - but isn't viewable in an 'all files' file via the browser or when attempting to open via Excel.   If we provide the full path/file it does open successfully in Excel and offer the Check Out option - but it won't show up
    in the 'File Open' dialog.
I thought at first it might be a matter of not having a version checked in - but it isn't showing under "Manage files which have no checked in version" menu.   I've gone through the various SharePoint view options and can't find anything there either.
What would make a single Excel file in such an ordinary document library not be visible to users with full control rights?  We have roughly 80k files stored in SharePoint overall - so please don't read this as being our initial test of SharePoint.
    I'd really appreciate any ideas...
    -Troy

Just to add a few more details. I have been able to add the file to a different library and they uploaded fine. The library in question is created off of a template and has 2 metadata fields. The fields are also being used in the other library, but that
was created from a different template.
The site and initial 4 libraries were created from a site template and then the library was added from a different library template. Checking ULS logs now, but doubtful I will find anything.

Hey, Thanks a lot.  It took quite a bit of time to resurrect this ipod.  I tried the upgrade again, but still would not recognize my ipod. So I went to the next step and reset my ipod, wiping of all of the information like it was new.  This helped my laptop see the ipod on itunes, but did not sync. So, I deleted the itunes off my computer completely, restarted and then reinstalled the newest itunes, and then restarted.  Finally, it recognized my ipod and started to download each song.  It took awhile as there was 602 songs, but finally it works.  Yea!!!  I never had any problem with my old nano, but this touch has been another animal for sure. Thank you again and also the community for information.  This was a helpful forum and will recommend to others if they get stuck with their ipod or iphone.  Take care, Karen
