Files on CD/DVD disappearing?

Hi,
This is my first post, as this is my first real problem with my iBook since I got it, about 2 months ago.
When I insert a disc in the combo drive, it mounts perfectly and I have the link on my desktop, I can read any file on it and all's fine.
However, for example, if I play a video file from the disc and watch it for 20 minutes, when it's done and I go back to the listing and want to start another file, oops! when I click on any of the files they just disappear, one by one. Nothing is readable anymore. If I want to play another file, I have to eject the disc and insert it again.
Anyone has any idea, this is pretty annoying and I'm at a loss???
iBook G4 12", 1.33ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Just to get this clear, you are saying that after burning a data DVD using Toast your Mac won't reognise the files?
Does that DVD show up up on your desktop when you insert it?
What brand of DVD media did you use?

  • Cannot copy file from backup DVD to HD folder

Whenever I finish a project, I had burn the various files (movie, text, pictures, pages, etc.) onto DVDs to free up hard disk space for present projects. Usually, I would use a disk image to burn those DVDs. Recently, I needed material from those DVDs and I found that I could not copy them from the DVD to my work folders on my hard disk by dragging them from the DVD window to another open window. I could only do it the roundabout way of opening those files individually using the programmes (like pages, iPhoto, etc) and then use the 'Save As ...' option in the File Menu. It was a huge hassle. I then looked into my other DVDs and found that they were the same way. I find DVDs easier to manage. Is it because I am using disk images or is there something wrong in the way I burn the DVDs. Please advise

When I try to move the files from the Finder Window with the files on the DVD, I do not get the plus sign when I try to drag it to the desktop or any other window. Even when I try with the option key pressed, there is no plus sign with the mouse arrow. Someone suggested to use the terminal and I did. It was a hassle, though.

  • Help! Trying to get a Video File off a DVD so I can use it in Final Cut Pro

Okay. I'm trying to cut together a project and I need the video and audio off a short DVD. The DVD is under 5 minutes in length and is not copy right protected. For the life of me I cannot understand how to convert the files off the DVD to something I can work with. When I open the DVD I have 2 files: 1) AUDIO_TS and 2) VIDEO_TS. I would like to convert these to something FCP can understand (AVI, MPEG...anything). I have searched and searched the message boards and have found no useful information. I have a feeling it's something to do with Disk Utility but have found no clear instructions. Half the sites want you to buy their software. Surely there is some way to do this without buying additional software. Any help would be greatly apppreciated.

There are four ways that I know of:
    1) Play the DVD and have the player's analog outputs connected to your DV VCR or camcorder, which then acts as a convertor to bring it into FCP
    2) MPEG StreamClip - FREE, rips the video and audio from the VIDEO_TS folder
    3) DVDxDV - $20 or so, does the same thing as MPEG-Streamclip only a little easier, IMO
    4) Cinematize - $70, same thing, more options

  • How to put a .mov file on a dvd using lion and have a commercial DVD player play my movie? iDVD is gone.  I never had it.

I have found a lot of frustration around this topic but no answers.
I have a MacBook Pro with Mac OS X Version 10.7.4.
I have a video I made with iMovie.  I want to burn it to a DVD for commercial DVD playback.  It's as simple as that.
    Things I've tried.
    1. Using iMovie, I saved an HD version of the project to my desktop as a .MOV file.  I know I can just burn that to a DVD.  It won't play.  I need a utility/program to put the necessary files on the DVD so a commercial namebrand DVD player will have what it needs.
    2. I heard iDVD used to do this but it's not on my MacBook Pro (Lion OS).  I've researched things like "What replaced iDVD" but found nothing but a but of complaining.  (and I can see why).
    3. I have looked for freeware.  It all looks fishy.
    Other options I'm looking into.
Use my Mac and connect a cable to the big TV screen.  Play the movie using this screen as a secondary monitor.  Problem - I have a dozen cables but none for this combo.
Move the .MOV file to a PC and play it using QuickTime.  The cables I have will work for a PC to TV.  Sad option.

  • Can i have more than one file on a dvd using compressor 4

im new to compressor and mac in general- im trying to use it to put multiple files onto one dvd- help! thanks!

Afraid that sharing to DVD is limited to a single source file. As a work-around, you could always put multiple finished sequences in FCPX on a single storyline – perhaps separated by short gaps. Export the project and bring the movie into Compressor. Set chapter markers where the gaps are and encode your DVD. Should work reasonable well.
If you have an older version of iLife, you can use iDVD.Otherwise I would say get Toast.  (Boxed sets of iLife are still available and if you do some searching you should be able to locate.)
    Good luck.

How do I get files from multiple DVDs that are using thesame file names? Message says "file already exists in catalog"

I am viewing your question from different perspective, that is, the issue that you face when you are ripping VOBs from a second DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc using Premiere Elements,
It is best to give the Premiere Elements version and computer operating system that it is running on. In the absence of that, I will generalize.
    Assuming that you are using
    Premiere Elements 12
    Add Media
    "DVD Camera or Computer Drive"
    Video Importer
Typically the Video Importer Save In: is C:\Users\Owner\Videos
Each of your DVD discs is going to have the same names for the ripped VOBs (VTS_01_1.VOB and so on depending on the duration of the movie). Consequently, after the ripping of the first DVD's VOBs and their save to Videos, you will end up with that "files already existing..." block for the ripping of the VOBs from the second DVD.
The answer is, for each DVD disc VOB ripping, to plan ahead and create and set for different folders in Videos in the Save In field of the Video Importer.
Please review and then let us know if that works for you. Please do not hesitate to ask if you need clarification on anything that I have written.
    Thank you.

  • Safari opening linked .zip files directly from DVD instead of downloading

    Dear all,
Safari opening linked .zip files directly from DVD (via Windows explorer) instead of downloading it tru browser click - it's working just fine in FF, Chrome IE. Is this a known issue? or something can be done by modifying browser setting/pref.
    Expecting more advise on this.
    Configurations: Windows XP
    Safari: 5.1.7
Note: ensured there is no space in the file path, just linked the .zip file using href attribute!
Also tried with .xls, .doc insted of .zip same issue appearing.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi
appzapper & such are pretty flaky at removing things usefully, imo.
Use the uninstaller for speed download - http://www.yazsoft.com/products/speed-download/faqs/?how-to-un-install-speed-dow nload-properly
or get a hold of FindAnyFile or easyfind & search for Growl & Speeddownload & yazsoft - but from all I hear, the uninstaller works fine.
Failing that, Safari's settings plist file isn't in caches
    Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist
    is the place
& if you're still stuck, test & maybe download another browser using a New User Account.

  • How do I extract files from a dvd I have already burned to re-edit back in Premiere?

I'm trying to extract the files from a dvd back to Premiere, the project was assembled with Premiere Pro 1.5, I need to re-edit that same project. The dvd is not a data disk.
    Please help!!

Along with the material in Eddie's link, you might want to read over this ARTICLE by Jeff Bellune, posted in the Adobe Encore FAQ's. While it addresses getting the material into Encore for authoring, much will apply to your situation.
Personally, I use an A-D bridge (though the file structure is already in digital form) to Capture directly from my DVD player to my computer. This is for non-commercial DVD's from my clients, where the original material is no longer available.. It's quick, easy and my Capture software Exports as DV-AVI Type II, so there is no additional conversion needed. If I need to work on the Menu structure, etc., then I use a workflow similar to Jeff's, outlined in his article.
Good luck, and please follow Eddie's link,

  • Backing up files onto a DVD+RW disc

I have backed up files onto a DVD+RW disc from my Mac.  However, when I go back to do another update, I get the message that I can't copy file because the disc is a read-only.  Why do I get this message?

It's foolish to backup to a CD or DVD, get yourself an External HD (they're relatively inexpensive) and use Time Machine. Please get one that is 1.5 to 2x the size of your internal HD. If you don't know how to use TM then simply look on YouTube and search for "Time Machine Tutorial" and you will find many videos.
The reason you get the error message is because writeable CD & DVDs can only be written to once, you cannot go back and add information. This make the practice silly and ineffective for backups.

  • Doesn't recognize files on a DVD-R

    Hello, everybody:)
I really hope you could help me with one issue.I have just added few files to my DVD-R (music, video, documents) via another computer using Nero. Now my Mac does not see those newly recorded files, only old ones, which were recorded in the same way in fact. My Fujitsu recognizes those new files though.. What can I do?
And another one, more general - when i insert DVD-RW and try to burn it, neither disk utility, nor toast allow me to create multi-session (and it worked once with CD-R).
    Thank you in advance!!

Just to get this clear, you are saying that after burning a data DVD using Toast your Mac won't reognise the files?

How to install leopard from a DMG file instead of DVD, When i open this file, click restart, NOTHING happened!!!!!!

  • Can't drag files from a DVD I burned

I transfer files off of my hard drive to conserve space from time to time. After burning the files to a DVD I am now unable to drag the files off the disk and transfer them back to my hard drive. I can only read them from the disk. What am I doing wrong?

Still need more information. What happens when you try to drag a file from your DVD to your Desktop? Does an error dialog pop up? If so what does it say? What happens if you use the cp command in Terminal ( +cp <path to file on DVD> ~/Desktop+ ). Does that succeed or fail? If it fails, what error message do you get?

  • Putting 2 vob files onto 1 DVD -Please help

I borrowed a handicam that burns to mini DVD, as mine broke. Usually I import files as DV on the mac from my camera and cut them together there.
With this camera, I have two halves of a recital that I want to put onto 1 DVD. I saved the DOB files from each mini disc ont my Mac and I figured I would just put them both into iDVD or edit with iMovie and burn onto 1 DVD, but I cannot import or use DOB files with them. I also have Final Cut Express, but again - no DOB files. iMovie won't take them.
I tried converting the files with VLC or MPEG Stream on a PC but the audio and video don't sync.
All I want to do is put both VOB files on a DVD that will play in a DVD player.
Please help me! I am extremely frustrated and under a deadline...

Make your sequences, export out as DV AVI files, bring them into Encore and author as usual.

  • Making VOB Files Play on DVD Player

I am using MPEG Streamclip to create edited VOB or TS files of personal DVD recordings. I can burn these files onto a data DVD, but I can only use my computer to play them. What I need is some kind of application that I can point to all of my VOB or TS files and it would create a IFO playlist in a VIDEO_TS folder that would run on my DVD player. I hope that makes sense. Basically, I need to go from a folder full of VOB video files to a DVD that will run on a DVD Player.
    Thanks in advance!

If you still have Toast 6, please update it least to version 6.0.9. Previous Toast versions could alter audio/video sync of muxed MPEG files. Some versions of Toast may have trouble burning some MPEGs with mp2 audio -- a workaround is to demultiplex the MPEG to m2v and m1a (or aiff) with MPEG Streamclip and burn them with Toast. Toast may lose audio sync or be too picky and reject some MPEGs -- a workaround is to demultiplex the MPEG to m2v and aiff with MPEG Streamclip and burn them with Toast. Converting to "Headed" MPEG adds a special header to the MPEG file that lets you import unsupported frame sizes into Toast 6 or 7 and skip recompression. However, DVDs made from "headed" MPEG files are not guaranteed to work with all players.
Sizzle does not have encoding capabilities. Maybe it is just re-muxing the files?
