Files searching in Time Capsule

Hi,
Is it possible to search for all backed-up audio files (perso note: wav and mp4) between 1st August 2010 and 23 December 2010.
In other words, and to be more general, is it possible to recover all these files between these 2 desktops dates and how?
Thank you,
Francois

I don't know. I haven't used any of them.
One I see referenced in the forums is FindAnyFile. You might check http://www.macupdate.com/ and/or similar sites.
If you're on Snow Leopard, it's in the Utilities section of the AppStore for 99 cents US (usually $3.99 US).
The support link is to: http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
A couple of things there indicate it may work; and there's even references to some alternatives towards the bottom.

  • File search on Time capsule doesn't seem to work anymore ?

    Hello,
I have my music files stored on time capsule. and I have a backup on a USB drive.
When I search for a certain word as part of the file name, the search on time capsule returns very few entries now, in some cases zero.
However searching on backup for instance returns over 500 entries. The files are available on time capsule and they play via iTunes,
but since I installed Lion, the search doesn't find them.
    what is wrong?
    thanks for any help!

If you do not have Finder open to any folder or are not using iPhoto or Mail, this is normal. With no apps open, you are at your desktop. Hence, if you click on the Time Machine icon, your desktop is what appears. Don't drag stuff onto your desktop. That's totally unnecessary. Try again with Finder open.

  • How can i get files from my time capsule to my new mac?

    Hello there,
I know this topic i much discussed, but searching has not turned up a solution.
I have a new mac book pro 15 on order and want to grab my files from my time capsule.   My old mac book pro 15 (3 months old) was encrypted with file safe.  In the past i have never had good results with bringing data to a new mac from time capsules; I've tried many times for my self and family.  As a result I use the time capsule for day to day old file retrieval needs and do manual backups of my data onto externals and NAS devices for migration to new computers-tedious but it has yet to fail me.  This time, I did that with everything except a few folders of my movies and pictures.  They are now prisoner on the time capsule.
What is the best way to get files off the time capsule and does it require that my login and user name on the new mac be identical to that which was on my old mac?
(I change my user names each time i get a new mac, not specifically on purpose but i haven't paid attention to what they were when setting up a new computer.)
    any assistance is appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks Allan,
Help me understand what question you're referring to.  I've been through several new macs and am not sure what specifically you're speaking about.
My old mac had a partition on the drive that I do not want on the new mac, so I am concerned about doing a full restore and prefer a file by file or folder by folder. is this possible?

  • How can I search the time capsule using spotlight or time machine?

Every time I try to use spotlight in finder, to find anything on the time capsule, spotlight automatically turns to the mac.
While using timemachine the connection to the time machine greys out.
How can I use these options, or different options to search the time capsule?

I've been looking for the star wars gui, but I only ended up watching scifi movies all night.
    LOL..
Oh well it is new year.. seems as good a use of time as any.
Click on the time machine icon in the dock.. that opens finder inside the backup.

  • Finding files on my Time Capsule.

I had to reformat my iMac. I have all my files backed up on my Time Capsule.
There is a file that I thought was in my Documents folder, but I cannot find it.
Is there a way to search for a given file on my Time Capsule? I'm 99.9% that the file has to be on my Time Capsule...I just cannot find it.

Were your files backed up to the Time Capsule via Time Machine or by some other method? The best way to locate them depends on that detail.

Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

  • I was able to copy all my files from my Time Capsule, but that is all they are...files. How do I get my new Mac Mini to emulate my other Mac?

    Doggiemommie,
Copying files is not a good idea.
The "other Mac" was backed up onto Time Capsule using the Time Machine. On your new Mac you should restore the old user - rather than copy files manually.
This usually happens during the initial setup of the new computer or you can do it later using Migration Assistant.
Please note, it is possible to damage backup file on the Time Capsule when you browse it and copy files manually.
    Hope this explains.

  • Can I share the files on the time capsule for all of the macs on my network and can I access time capsule from my laptop while out of town?

I have a iMac desktop and a macbook pro.  If I purchase a time capsule, can I use it as the central location for my files for both computers?  Can I access the files on the time capsule from my macbook pro when I am out of town?

Yes, with some provisos.. it is designed as primarily a backup location for Time Machine.
Look at Pondini who has a great deal of info in his KB of all things Time Machine .. as well as Time Capsule.
    Q3 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Time_Capsule.html
Remote access is via BTMM and iCloud.. just look it up.
But the TC must be the main router in the network for it to work.

  • I get this message "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" when I try and add any files to my Time Capsule

I get this message "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)" when I try and add or delete any files to my Time Capsule.  It just started happening a week ago.

I would get an external drive today and copy all your stuff off the TC.. forget trying to load more onto it. There is a good chance after 3years (A 2TB should be only about 2years tops), the disk or the TC itself is on the way out. Do it immediately. If TM is also failing to backup you need to recognise symtoms of impending doom.
Unfortunately the error messages are archane and it is hard to discover their meaning.
You also cannot verify a network drive.. you can verify the TM sparsebundle though so do that.
    A5. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Reboot the whole network from off.. certainly if you run later OS it can simply lose the drive..
If you still fail to be able to copy to the TC.. then get that external and copy off it. Tell us if you can do that.

  • HT1178 Backed up files on a time capsule

    Hi,
My hard drive was reformatted whilst being repaired wiping all of my data. And then rebooted without re-installing my files from my Time Capsule. So how do I now re-instal my files from my last back up?
And when I re-install those files, will they merge with the documents / data that I've created since rebooting? Or do I have to back that data up first?
    Pinkafeld

Since posting this query, I've now been able to work out how to tranfer items back from Time machine.

I was copying files to my time capsule when it crashed when it was almost finished. Now I am stuck with a light grey folder I can not delete. I would´t care if it wasn´t for the fact the folder is 1 TB size and takes up too much space. I have tried turning on and of Hiding Files in Finder and what not with no success. So, how do I delete this folder. Remember, I am not extremely familiar with technical terms.

I recommend you erase the TC.. it is the easiest and fastest solution.
In Airport utility open the disk tab and select erase.. choose quick erase.. it will take less than 1min.
Start again but copy files in small amounts.

  • How to store really important files on a Time Capsule

I'm wondering whether it is wise to store really important files on a Time Capsule (apart from Time Machine) because its hard disk is non-removable and non-replaceable and there is no mirrored backup. One could lose everything in the blink of an eye.
What workarounds are there? The TC is a brilliantly simple device, but it seems to have many limitations as well.

i think you already answered your own question
and there is no mirrored backup.
well, there is the archive feature ...
    What workarounds are there?
personally, in addition to TM backups to my TC, i use a couple of external firewire drives, each partitioned in two, and bootably clone my Mac's startup disks to those on a weekly basis.
week 1 / drive X = MBP to partition A and Mini to partition B
week 2 / drive Y = MBP to partition C and Mini to partition D
week 3 and so forth = start over.
using Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper, you could even incrementally clone your internal drives, which saves a lot of time.
    happy computing !

  • HT201250 Will using AirPort Utility to "restore to original settings" make you have to re-back up your computer's files on a Time Capsule?

Will using AirPort Utility to "restore to original settings" make you have to re-back up your computer's files on a Time Capsule?

The advantage is CCC has built in routines that "bless" (see the Terminal.app command "bless") the
os x installation so it will boot properly on the new volume it is being installed on.
Disk Utility simply copies (restores) files from one volume to another. Many times this works just fine.
Sometimes it won't boot afterwards. Most of the time (as long as there are no system files missing
or corrupted) a person may "bless" the drive and restore it to working condition.
CCC is not a "magical" application, it is in fact a front end to applications that already exist separately
in OS X (asr, hdiutil, diskutil, bless, etc.).
It doesn't matter to me how you do it. It's your time not mine. Everyone should spend some time
behind the command line in terminal. I do many tasks using the command line, including and not
limited to complete system restores, backing up data, disk partitioning, installing software, disk
repair, permissions repair, ACL management, restoring data, managing disk images, network
management, user management, file management, etc. Many people are fearful of the command
line. I feel just the opposite, I'm fearful without it.

  • Access files stored in Time Capsule via iCloud

how to access files stored in Time Capsule via iCloud

Yes, you can remotely access files in the TC..
Did you read the apple instructions and do them??
    http://www.apple.com/au/support/icloud/back-to-my-mac/
It does depend on the main router being upnp or NAT-PMP capable.. so the best is if the TC is the main router.. otherwise you may have to manually forward the ports.
