Files shares randomly display "Location is not available"

Hi all,
I recently set up a windows 2012 file share server for departments and user folders. I've pushed the drive mappings out via group policy and on my laptop they work flawlessly. On everyone else's computers, they're hit or miss. Group Policy is currently mapping
the drives based on IP address (i.e. \\172.31.255.250\shares\departments). As an example, this share will map to a user's device and it will be accessible. Periodically, they will no longer be able to access it and receive a "Location is not available"
message. However, if I navigate to the DNS name (i.e. \\servername\shares\departments) it will work. If that location becomes unavailable later on, I can still access it via FQDN (i.e. \\servermame.domain.com\shares\departments).
More information:
- Using my account on my laptop, I never have an issue with my network drives.
- Signing in to another laptop with my account, I experience the same issues as the other users.
- All of our computers are running windows 8.1 pro and are currently up to date.
GPO configuration:
Action - Update
Location - \\172.31.255.250\shares\departments
Reconnect - True
Drive Letter - Use S:
Hide/Show this drive - Show this drive
Hide/Show all drives - No change
Edit:
I'm seeing this in the logs and don't know why it would be happening:
The user 'S:' preference item in the 'Map department folders {3B0FD149-D2DD-440B-A68D-8A137558F393}' Group Policy Object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x800708ca This network connection does not exist.' This error was suppressed.

Hi Nathan,
When the issue occurs, can you connect it manually with \\172.31.255.250? Also please test to ping that IP address to see the result - Whether the IP is actually changed?
Also it could still be a temporarily network issue if it failed for a while and back to work with one of the 3 kind of connection (IP, NetBIOS and FQDN).
In order to find out the root cause you may need to capture a network connection trace with Network Monitor.
You can compare the 2 packages when using NetBIOS and FQDN (when one of it cannot connect) and find out the difference.
For how to use Netmon please refer to:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/148942
Also you can upload some packages so we can help analysis - Please noticed that uploaded data to a cloud based app will share it with public so it is OK if you do not willing to share information with everyone.
Please remember to mark the replies as answers if they help and un-mark them if they provide no help. If you have feedback for TechNet Support, contact [email protected]
Hi Shaon,
I can capture network connection traces later, but when the issue occurs, I CAN still ping the server and can even navigate to "\\172.31.255.250\shares" however the sub folders do not show up anymore.

  • Windows 7 error: Location is not available or Item not found

I'm using windows 7 ultimate. I have a directory on a 1TB external usb drive called "1976 T.N.T". I am neither able to access this directory nor am I able to delete it. When I double click to access it windows says -
Message Title: "Location is not available"
Message Text: J:\Music\Library\Rock-Metal\ACDC\1976 T.N.T refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer.or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the Internet
or your network and then try again. If it still cannot be located the information might have been moved to a different location.
When I try to delete it windows says -
    Message Title: Item Not Found
Message Text: Could not find this item.
This item is no longer located in J:\Music\Library\Rock-Metal\ACDC. Verify the item's location and try again.
I have tried the following -
    1. Deleting file using command prompt but that doesn't work
    2. Check disk with both options "File system errors" and "Bad sector recovery" selected - it does not report any errors and the problem persists
    3. Rebooting the computer
    4. Disconnecting the drive and connecting it to my xp pro laptop (messages on xp are slightly different but to the same effect)
Any suggestions short of formatting the drive will be appreciated.

The cause of this is as follows:
The directories in question were created or last modified by a process other than Windows Explorer. This process created a directory name with a space at the end. When you created a duplicate directory, the exact directory name you created was therefore
not exactly the same; it had no space on the end. That is why both directories with the apparent same name could coexist.
Note: if you attempt to create a directory from within Windows Explorer with a space on the end, the process explorer.exe is designed to prevent this from happening. That's why it's never usually an issue.
To reproduce this problem, you could do the following:
    1) Create C:\foo
    2) Create C:\bar
    3) Use Robocopy to create the erroneous directory using the following command:
    robocopy "C:\foo" C:\bar" /E
Notice that I missed the first double-quote on the target location. Robocopy should have responded with an error, but due to the way it interpreted my input, it didn't.
Now you will see a directory called C:\foo\bar
Except this directory is actually: "bar " - the word "bar" with a space on the end.
Now try deleting C:\foo altogether. It won't because there is a directory underneath it that has an invalid name.
Now try entering C:\foo, and creating a second directory called "bar". This will work, and there will appear to be two directories named "bar".
But this time you can go up a level and delete "C:\foo".
Put it down to a bug in Windows, a bug in Robocopy, whatever you like! That's the reason though...

  • Location is not available to mapped network drive in Windows 8 using Synology NAS

    Original Thread:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/location-is-not-available-to-mapped-network-drive/ca7eac5c-0e3d-494b-b488-e245978e4db9
I have recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 standard edition. I have come across a problem when using the option for mapped network drives. Under Windows 7 I would normally map a network drive (Synology NAS) and I could access all files, copy and paste, install
apps, and link media, all from within the mapped network drive. However, under Windows 8.1 I have come across a couple of problems.
    1. When I try to copy a file from my "Mapped Network Drive" to the C:\Drive (OS Boot Drive), I get the following error,
"E:\ is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. if the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or internet, and then try again. If the
location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted."
However, if I copy a file from the "NETWORK/Network Location" the file copies just fine with no problems. And, If I also copy a file from a "Added Network Location" the file also copies just fine with no problems. And, if I copy a file from
my "Mapped Network Drive" to my D:\Drive (non OS Drive), the file copies just fine with no problems.
    2. When I try to install apps from my "Mapped Network Drive" they will sometimes install and sometimes not (I am also choosing the option to run the programs as Administrator). Again if I try to install using either the "NETWORK/Network Location"
or an "Added Network Location" the apps install just fine with no problems.
    3. When I link media (music or videos) from my "Mapped Network Drive" they will work but once I reboot they no longer work as if they have lost the file path or link of the original source location.
    4. When I use FireFox (browser) and I set my default download dir to my "Mapped Network Drive" it will work once originally set it but after I reboot, it no longer works. However, again if I set the default download dir to either the "NETWORK/Network
Location" or an "Added Network Location" the default download dir works fine even after reboot.
While I am able to access my network drive using any of the three options, "Mapped Network Drive", "NETWORK/Network Location", and "Added Network Location" but only "NETWORK/Network Location", and "Added Network
Location"appear to be reliable. Tbh I would prefer to be able to use my "Mapped Network Drive" in Windows 8 as I have been able to under Windows 7.
    More info:
I currently have UAC set to "Never Notify".
I also have Windows 8.1 installed on three different systems and all of them give me the same exact problems. One of the systems is a completely clean install with no 3rd party apps installed.
Just so its clear I am able to access the "Mapped Network Drive" but unfortunately this method of access appears to be unreliable in Windows 8 but in Windows 7 it works flawlessly.
If I map a network drive from another pc running windows 7 or 8, I can access and use the mapped drive with no problems. This problem appears to be related to the Synology NAS devices and I have researched the Synology forums but only found one thread about
    the problem, here:
    http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=76687
I have searched several forums and attempted to pick the brains of my local computer shops for any incite on this problem but I have been unable to find a solution/fix.
Any help resolving this is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Based on your description, we can temporarily disable the firewall to see whether the issue persists.
For this issue seems related to the Synology NAS devices, in order to get professional help regarding the product, we can contact the vendor support to see whether the issue
    can be fixed.

I think you can use an IP address in the File spec. Windows allows you to use the IP address rather then the hostname in a // address (UNC?) infact its faster to use the ip over the hostname (windows networking is SLOW anyway)
Why not try dertimining if the machine is connected to the network before trying to get the file? There is something in the NetworkInterface API about pinging a IP or was that in the Socket API. eitherway, i think finding out if the computer is available before the file would make sense, that way you arnt waiting arround to find out if the file on an unavailable machine isnt there when you know the machine isnt online.
    Thats my two cents.

  • MSE : "Files needed to display video are not installed..."

I installed the MSI DigiVox ATSC w QAM USB stick. Live TV setup and channel scanning worked fine. But then when I try to use the tuner in Windows Media Center, and play live TV, I get stuttering video and audio for a few moments before this message is displayed:
"Files needed to display video are not installed or not working correctly. Please restart Windows Media Center or restart the computer." I have of course tried both.
WMC plays back movie files from my HDD without any problems.
One symptom is when I go through guided setup, and choose 5.1, the Test button does not result in any audio output. Even though WMC's system sounds and file playback audio works fine.
I have Win 7 64 bit, all updates. Intel i5 2500K integrated video (HD Graphics 3000) - latest drivers installed. Connecting via HDMI.
I tried the exact same tuner on a Shuttle based x86 Win7 Ultimate 32-bit system, with a discrete ATI video cards, and everything worked fine.
    1) Is there a problem with the 64-bit drivers, or
    2) Is there a problem with MSI Digi Vox and Intel HD 3000 graphics?
    3) Something else?
    Thanks!

If I connect the HTPC directly to my Samsung DLP, it works fine.
There must be a problem with the combination Intel HD3000, Onkyo TX-SR605 and Windows Media Center that I probably will never be able to solve
EDIT: So I tried a discrete ATI video card, and had the same problem. Ergo, it must be that WMC cannot handshake or communicate with my Onkyo TX-SR605 receiver.
EDIT2: Also, my old 32-bit HTPC connecting via the same receiver, there is no problem. This is so frustrating. I think I will re-install Windows 7 64-bit + all drivers, and try WMC7 audio + Live TV before installing anything else.

  • Plug-in for Adobe Reader to display embedded WMV not available

My problem is that I have a PDF with an embedded WMV.  When I attempt to open it, I get the following message:
The PDF file contains media that requires an additional player.  Please click 'Get Media Player' to
download the correct media player.  To play the media, you will need to close and restart the application
once the player installation is complete.
When I go to download the correct media player, the Adobe web site, (http://www.adobe.com/special/acrobat/nomediaplayer.html), informs me that the third-party media player is not available for my system.  It does, however, suggest visiting the Apple web site for QuickTime.
As a matter of course, I decided to install Flip4Mac which is an add-on to QuickTime that allows it to play Windows Media files.  While this add-on does function according to specification, I still get the same error when I attempt to open the same PDF file.
Note that I am running Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).

Putting it bluntly, you shouldn't be embedding WMVs in PDF files anymore - it's called "legacy media" and it's been discontinued for security reasons. You can't author it in Acrobat X, and playback is disabled in all current versions of Acrobat and Adobe Reader unless the user changes their security options. Authors should be using Rich Media annotations, which embed FLV or H.264 video and play cross-platform via an internal copy of Flash Player.
The weblink fired by Reader when it encounters legacy media for which the OS has no registered handler understands that you're on a Mac - and as there are no primary players for WMV files on OS X, that's what it tells you. Adobe does not link to third-party add-ons for other software, and even with those installed it will continue to complain unless the add-on has changed the file type associations, so that WMV files automatically open in Quicktime.

  • Problem with file share from iTunes to iPad - not enough memory

    Hi
I've got iTunes (10.7.0.21) installed - latest version.
On my iPad I have an app - OpenSong. I need to transfer a number of files to this app throug Application - File share (don't know if this is the correct description, I use a Danish version).
I want to add around 750 small files (1-3 kb) to the iPad. The problem is that it only will copy around 30-60 files at a time before iTunes comes with a box indication that the program encountered a problem and cannot copy the file xxxxx. "Not enough availabel memory".
I then have to close iTunes and continue from where I came to. If i don't, that is I try to copy again, iTunes frequently crashes.
iPad 3, 64 GB - plenty of free memory
Win 7, 4 GB RAM, plenty of free disc space. Windows and iTunes fully updated.
Anyone got an idea? Or how do I report this to Apple?

    Hi Damse,
I have the same problem. I also have about the same number of small files to transfer to the iPad. The point at which the transfer through iTunes to the iPad varies within the range you describe. I also have taken to loading in as many files as I can, integrating them into the applicatiom, ejecting the iPad, and stopping and starting iTunes again and repeating the process.

  • File shares in EMC Isilon NAS not being accessible .........in windows file server

    Hi
We have an odd issue in windows 2003 server where the users are not being able to access the shares in EMC Isilon NAS drives.
Found that the KB 3002567 installed on last Tuesday March 10 2015, caused the issue and related to Data that resides on EMC Isilon clusters is unavailable to SMB/SMB2/SMB3 clients.
Finally resorted to uninstall the particular patch from the Domain controllers of 2003 & 2008 and the shares are being accessible.
Is there any alternative to this process of uninstallation of the patch KB 3002567 ......since this patch has to be uninstalled in pending DC's?

  • "Cannot load the animation file. The file is either damaged or is not available in thespecified..."

I keep getting this error when I try to import Flash 10 Actionscript 3 files into my Captivate 5 presentation. These files were originally written in AS2, but have since been updated to AS3. They work in flash player fine and do not generate any debug information. Any idea as to what is going on here?

Not a good solution, but it works.
    - I made a Captivate 4 presentation, added my AS3 animation to it, and saved that presentation.
    - I opened that presentation in Captivate 5 and copied the animation, then pasted it in my CP5 presentation.

  • Removing Mac OS 9 files now that classic mode is not available on OS 10.5

Is it ok to remove all the OS 9 files and folders from my hard disk now that I'm unable to use classic mode since upgrading to OS 10.5. If so whats the safest way of doing this?

If you're sure you don't need the files (Classic apps won't run, but many data files from Mac OS 9 applications can be read in Mac OS X applications), yes, you can delete them. No special procedure is needed; just throw them in the Trash as you would any other document or folder. You may be asked to authenticate to remove the files/folders; if so, just use the user name and password for any account with administrator privileges.

  • Find Friends app keeps saying "location not available" on iOS7?

After I updated my 4S to iOS 7, Find Friends will not actually find the person, it just pops up with "location not availble" everytime. I have tried restoring the phone, logging out then back in, and deleting the app then redownloading it and nothing has helped. The person I am trying to find says everything is working well on their end. Help!

My family has 5 iphone 5s's. Two of my kids and myself just upgraded from iOS6 to iOS7. Now, on my Find Friends app, their locations only say Location Not Available. However my wife and and my other child, still on iOS6, their locations immediately appear.
In talking with my two kids that are on iOS7, I have 100% confirmed that THE FIND FRIENDS APP MUST BE OPEN in order for their location to be found. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. Furthermore, my kids will not leave the Find Friends app open because it drains their batteries at an extremely fast rate. This is a new issue for iOS7.
By confirm I mean this. On a hunch I called them when their location said not available, and confirmed that their Find Friends app was closed. I asked them to launch their Find Friends app on their phones. I then checked my Find Friends, and suddenly their locations were visible. I then had them close their Find Friend app, and sure enough, my Find Friends immediately showed their location as Not Available.
THIS BEHAVIOR WAS NEVER PRESENT IN iOS6. NEVER!. I have also 100% confirmed that my wife's phone, beside me as as I type this, has all apps closed, including Find Friends. However her location immediately appears in my Find Friends list.
I certainly hope that Apple will fix this immediately. I bought the five iPhone 5s's over a year ago, almost exclusively because of the Find Friends app, so I could keep track of my kids. Never once did we have trouble with Find Friends. And the app did not consume much battery, even when it was open.
