Files take up too much space

Apx 3,000 songs (no art) are taking up over 40GB of space on my ipod. I've deleted all photos & other files. This is just music. This seems really big. How can I compress or fix?

You need to look in iTunes under edit/preferences/advanced/importing. What does it say in settings and import using?
You may have the import settings and bitrate set wrong. You need to compress your music using either mp3 or aac.
If you see AIFF, WAV or Apple Lossless then those formats are going to take way more space than mp3 or aac, especially the first 2 which are raw uncompressed formats.

I recommend you erase the TC.. it is the easiest and fastest solution.
In Airport utility open the disk tab and select erase.. choose quick erase.. it will take less than 1min.
Start again but copy files in small amounts.

Bookmark Toolbar bookmarks have icons & take up too much space.

Firefox 4 beta 3 added icons to the Bookmark Toolbar, i.e. folder icons next to folder drop-downs, and mini-icons for links. While they're pretty, they take up too much space. Beta 2 didn't look like this.
How can I get rid of them?

Not on OS X. 
It is probably the first Firefox version that will have icons on the Bookmarks Toolbar if you get them by default. 
In previous Firefox versions you need a special theme or code in userChrome to accomplish that. 
Now you will need code in userChrome.css if you want to suppress those icons.
Add code to [http://kb.mozillazine.org/UserChrome.css|userChrome.css] below the @namespace line.

How do I remove the Icons next to each bookmark on the bookmark toolbar? They take up too much space and all the bookmarks I need on the toolbar dont show up.

On my bookmarks toolbar, each bookmark has the associated webpage icon next to it. I would like to remove those icons, as they take up too much space.

The icons, if you are familiar with them or they are obvious, take up less space than the words. You can abbreviate the names down to next to nothing or even nothing.
To save space and help organization you can group bookmarks into folders on your Bookmarks toolbar.

No. That feature is hard coded into the app. Send a feature request to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html. The Command+i key combination can quickly open and close the Info tray to get it out of your way.

Sign up to iTunes Match, though I'd consider investing in more storage. If space is a problem now then you're probably not backing up your existing media and content, which you should most certainly do.

Files taking up too much space?

I just bought my computer (macbook pro) a couple of weeks ago, and already i have used up 60gb of hard drive space. I took a 3 minute video, and it said on the information that it took up 2.16 gb of space! this is outrageous - and it never took up this much space on my pc. is there anything i can do to make files take up less space?

If it is a digital video camera (DV cam), imported footage will be about 20 GBs per hour, regardless of the camera. HD is an entirely different story, taking up much more space.
Storing this footage on your computer is not ideal. Most people use external drives to accommodate any significant amount of DV footage, thereby eliminating the limitations of relatively small laptop Hard Drives. If you are going to import footage to your internal Hard Drive, get it edited as soon as you can, then export to some compressed format, either DVD or Quicktime.
Although much smaller than DV footage, photos can begin to consume significant amounts of disk space. Take all the photos you like, import them into iPhoto, but keep everything organized and "archive" what you don't need to keep on your computer to CDs/DVDs.
Music stored in your iTunes library will consume whopping amounts of disk space, and if you purchase videos to watch in iTunes, it gets even worse. Stay on top of this, archiving any videos you have watched to CDs/DVDs.

Movies take up too much space

Movie files are chewing up space on my computer. With Apple TV, can I download my all movies from my laptop to Apple TV and then delete them from my computer to free up space? Or will this take them off of my apple tv?

I have my library on an external hard drive. I'm actually going to be moving it to a drobo. That way space will not be an issue. Currently my iTunes Library is 280GB, so it would be difficult to keep it on the internal drives on the computer. That is just how I overcome the space issue.

I am trying to work out what is taking up space on my HD. I have counted roughly all my files/applications and other things.
I have removed all files from my Desktop, however it still says 110 GB and 0 files.
I wonder if i have doubled somthing or, does the desktop just take up a lot of space?

Extracted audio takes up too much space?

I'm editing a video that's about 1 hour and 20 minutes long.
I'm putting music over about 2/3 of it, and want to keep the audio from the rest, but I get the annoying audio blip between clips with transitions, so I tried extracting audio from the clips where I want to keep it.
It works fine for a little while, but the more clips I extract the audio from, the longer each one takes, and the whole program seems to get bogged down.
I understand the audio is extracted from the entire original clip. Is there any cure for this problem? I still have 18GB available on my hard drive and the extracted audio seems to be about 1GB.

Hi Punky,
I usually extract all the audio in one hit after I have finished editing the movie then deselect the audio box for the clips timeline. This way there are no hassles with the audio being out of sync.
As for it hanging during extraction: Which Mac are you using and how much RAM do you have? Have you run a system cache cleaner lately, like Onyx? What other apps do you have running while you are using iMovie? You could also try removing the iMovie.plist (preference) file.

I copied my user folder over to the new hard drive, but how do I access its contents? More accurately, how do I set the folder on the hard drive as my default storage space?

Updated iPod to iso 6.0 and memory now takes up too much space to do a restore from backup ?

I just updated to iso 6.0 and my iPods usage now has 3.2 GB of space used by "other" and I have none of my apps on it or music ect. But it won't allow me to put my stuff back on the iPod because when I try to restore from backup it says I don't have enough space. I don't have contacts or anything on my iPod so what's other and how do I get rid of it. I jus want my iPod how it was cause its useless now cause I have nothing on it and I can't put my apps and music back on it?

An "other" that large usually indicates that the "other" included corrupted files. Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.
