Files that cannot be deleted or opened

I have filesthat appear on my hard disc and cannot be deleted or opened. How do I get rid of these?

As an "administrator account", you should be able to "sudo" before commands such as "rm" (delete) or "chmod" (change permissions of) a file.
But before you start going "sudo-happy", what and where are the files? I ask because some files should not be deleted except by existing automated processes.

I watched a couple of videos on the lumia last night. I used the browser to "stream" these by the movie player. The two movies were about 2Gb each.
Now I have no free storage on the device.
I have tried going to storage check and it tells me that of the 7.2G 7.1G is use with 4.4Gb in media files. The next screen ("details") shows an "other" of 4Gb. How do I delete those temporary files? They appear as mounted DMG files.If you right click on them mdo they have an Eject entry?
Have you set the OS to Show All Files with a terminal command? If so take that off for now.
Look in your Home folder (Users/UserName) and then the Desktop subfolder under it. Do you see all these files/folders/drives?

I have a file that cannot, repeat, CANNOT be trashed. In fact, I can't do much with this bloated Quicktime file created in Final Cut Pro. It cannot be opened and now, cannot be deleted (I can't even remove it from the trash). In fact, it can't even be accessed with Get Info without the dreaded multilingual freeze-frame warning: You need to restart your computer…" I've seen that taunt at least two dozen times so far tonight.
I wouldn't spaz out about it but the thing is an inaccessible 9 GB space hog on my hard drive.
I've tried the option-key route, tried third party utilities like Trash It!, Force Empty Trash & Cocktail. I've even gone the Terminal "sudo rm" route to no avail (if you're wondering, yes, I have tried going single-user mode and, no, it didn't work either).
If anyone can crack this one, they can use me as a reference that they are indeed a Mac god.

1. You wrote: "I've run Disk Utility and repaired permissions from my OS X installation disks..."That's not what Mike suggested back here. It's not clear from your response to him, i.e. "I've actually already run Disk Utility..."if that meant you employed Repair Disk.
If you're unsure, perform at least steps 1-3 of the Procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ.
2. The persistent kernel panic when attempting to access those files implies something is amiss with the drive, the OS, or the Mac itself. See also my "Resolving Kernel Panics" FAQ. This FAQ includes step-by-step instructions for identifying and resolving some of the most common causes of kernel panics. The FAQ is a roadmap: start at the beginning and work systematically through the end, i.e. the "If all else fails..." section.
3. Was the file you created and trashed saved on your startup disk or was it actually on another drive/volume before you trashed it? See my "Solving Trash Problems" FAQ for some info on the architecture of Trash under Mac OS X.

How do I unlock an InDesign CC file that thinks it is still open?

My team works on a directly on the server with Macs running both Lion and Mountain Lion and Adobe CC. Sometimes InDesign crashes and leaves the file in the open state and renders the file unable to open, copy or duplicate. Previous versions of InDesign would at least allow you to copy the file that it thought was still open. Now with CC you cannot do anything with that file. Even deleting the .lDLK file in the terminal does not release that file. I know that it is a protection, but it is killing files.

I have made Preview the default for all PDF's and yet this persists. I have also deleted Adobe Reader. This particular file is a portfolio, btw.

It happened to me today for the first time since upgrading to Mavericks 10.9.3, no "stop lights" in the title bar of the popup, in fact nothing at all.
I've never established a FaceTime account. So I tried to delete FaceTime from the Applications folder on the "system" disk thinking this may eliminate the popup. Mavericks informed me "Cannot delete FaceTime as it is used by the operating system.
Is this a MAC virus? Or is this an example user community alpha/beta testing that Apple just announced?

That being the case, why then did the FaceTime popup even appear in the first place?
It's not clear to me what it is. If it occurs again, please take a screenshot of the popup and post it in a reply.
To take a screenshot hold ⌘ Shift 4 to create a selection crosshair. Click and hold while you drag the crosshair over the area you wish to capture and then release the mouse button. You will hear a "camera shutter" sound. This will deposit a screenshot on your Desktop.
If you can't find it on your Desktop look in your Documents or Downloads folder.
When you post your response, click the "camera" icon above the text field:
This will display a dialog box which enables you to choose the screenshot file (remember it's on your Desktop) and click the Insert Image button.
The screenshot attachment option for this support site appears only on computers - not on iPads.
⌘ Shift 4 and then pressing the space bar captures the frontmost window.
⌘ Shift 3 captures the entire screen.
Drag the screenshot to the Trash after you post your reply.

Why do I periodically have emails that cannot be deleted?

I have a few emails that cannot be deleted and show up with an old date. How can I get rid of them?

I assume that they are dated something like 31/12/1969 ?
Try turning the account off and on : Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars , then tap the account on the right, slide Mail to 'off', exit settings and go back into the Mail app, and then go back to Settings and slide Mail back to 'on'
If that doesn't work then try closing the Mail app completely : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Mail app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Mail app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
Also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

Files that won't delete

I have a multitude of files that will not delete for any reason whatsoever. When I try and open them the message "can't be opened because the original item can't be found" and the following options occur "Delete Allias", "Fix Allias", and "OK". I've tried to delete the allias as well as fix the allias but nothing seems to happen. The main reason I'm trying to delete these files is because they are taking up a lot of space. Any and all help would be fantastic as I have no idea how to go about this anymore>

If you used iTunes to get the photos on the phone, then use the same iTunes and uncheck the music you don't want and do another sync.

Select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES). If this is a current 4th (or 3rd) gen iPod shuffle, you should be able to see the contents of the shuffle by type, intented under the shuffle's name (still in the sidebar). Select Music or Audiobooks (not sure where those items from the library will be listed). The items will be listed to the right, for each category. Find the items, select, and delete.

NOTE: If this is an 1st or 2nd gen iPod shuffle, select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES). Over to the right, go to the Contents tab, where the items are listed. Select and delete them from this list.
I find it more convenient to make a playlist in iTunes with things I want to put on the shuffle. I then set up automatic syncing (or use autofill) to have iTunes load the shuffle from that playlist, automatically.

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.

No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.

If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.

Well, most of what we can tell you is already stated in the message you are getting. A phone can only sync with one library at a time. You have apparently synced your phone with a different iTunes library in the past, or changes have been made to this library so the phone no longer recognizes it as the library with which it was synced. To know which you will have to provide the information.
If you bought them using the AppleID you use with this phone it may simply be easier to re-download them directly to the phone rather than sync them, though you will want to resolve that issue at some point.
