"Files that don't belong" & "Stray file clips"

I'm working on a slideshow project in iMovie 4; no video clips are involved. I'm adding narration, using the Timeline & the Audio Pane. Things went along ok & then two days ago, when I opened my project, I got the message, "There is one file that doesn't belong in the project. Would you like to move it to the trash?" It was a voice file. I clicked "no," but it didn't appear in the voice track & I had to rerecord it. I looked at the Media folder, & the file was there.
Yesterday, I did a lot of recording & today on opening, I got the same message, involving 17 voice files, even though I had quit iM4, saved the changes, & reloaded the program several times for various reasons. When it started up, no messages appeared, so I thought the problem solved.
Today, as two days ago, those recordings do not appear on the Timeline. So, I guess when it happens again, I should click "Move to Trash" and rerecord the missing recordings, since iMovie4 won't recognize them, anyway. Isn't that right?
As to "stray file clips," I opted to put them in the Clips Pane; they are transitions, but I don't know what to do with them, for this reason: I've found some cross-dissolve transitions include a photo in them that is outside the two photos I want them to join, so I think these are problem transitions. What can cause a cross-dissolve to incorporate a nearby photo that is not involved in the transition?
About 2 & 1/2 years ago, this forum had this topic, & the message was, never empty the Trash until the project is finished. I'd read in a book not to empty trash, but it didn't emphasize "until the project is finished." I've emptied Trash lots of times & I think this caused my problems. iMovie 4 is befuddled.
I've read the danslagle Website on this, but it doesn't seem to help. Can anyone tell me what I need to do? Because, these issues are going to be constant & maybe things will get worse.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do?
1. As you said, stop emptying the iMovie Trash.
2. Is the project saved on an external drive? Make sure the disk uses the Mac OS Extended disk format. If it doesn't use that format, iMovie can have trouble saving the project to the disk. If the project file isn't properly saved to disk, iMovie can't "remember" where the clips go, so it puts them in the Trash.
From time to time we've seen reports of LaCie drives formatted with Mac OS Extended from the factory needing to be re-formatted to work correctly. I don't know if it's happening here, but keep it in mind.
If more problems develop after you stop emptying the Trash, you might want to consider erasing the drive. That will erased the files on the drive, so make backups.

  • HELP! "There are 309 files that don't belong in the project"

I needed to reformat my OS, so I backed up all my data onto DVD+RW's. (Verbatim brand.) including my imovies. I copied the entire "blahblah.iMovieProject" folder onto the DVD, then copied it back onto the drive after the reinstall. But now when I click on the project, it prompts me about this:
"There are 309 files that don't belong in the project"
    and then this:
"There are 160 stray clip files in the project folder. Would you like to put them on the clips pane?"
After I click on "Leave Files Alone" for both of them, (versus move to trash, and Move files to clips pane, respectively), The project opens completely BLANK.
Oh great. Please inform. Am I out of luck?
Oh, btw, it also created like 10 versions of each photo in the "Media" folder. ick. what happened?...

Also, one more thing! Now that this has happened, even after I quit and restart the computer, upon opening the application, instead of starting out with a brand new project, the same prompts appear, and then leaves me with that seemingly corrupt project which is blank.

The best thing when you buy a phone in second hand is to reset it as new. It deletes every setting and data from previous owner. If you have data of yours, it is better to back it up.

No.  The iPad cannot make/receive cellular calls or send/receive cellular text messages.  It can only send and receive cellular data, if equipped with 3G.

  • Why does the site manager create c:\ folders for files that don't belong to the site via FTP?

    Hello everyone,
now I've been using Dreamweaver since Ultradev 1.0 and I have just recently upgraded to CS 5.5 Web Edition. Before that I used CS3. I've allways been very satisfied with Macromedia and Adobe products until now
Now I don't know whats happened in the last few years but I am getting the impression that the quality of Dreamweaver used to be alot more stable.
Developing for more than half my life I understand that bugs are usual and that not everything can be cared for, but to be quite honest I also know that there are bugs that just should not happen when you ship a product.
On the other hand I do love some of the enhancements that have come with 5.5, for example the Javascript Framework integration and jQuery code hinting features but what I really cannot understand is why the heck is Dreamweaver automatically uploading files that do not belong to the currently open site to the ftp server? I cannot think of any scenario in which this would be appropriate behaviour. I'd understand it if the files somehow contained links (CSS, JS, PHP, etc.) to the currently open site, but they don't! Dreamweaver simply sets out, every now and again, to creating a totally "dumb" folder structure on my ftp servers when I open a file from outside of the site - which I do very often to copy code I used in other projects.
It's just frustrating having to cleanup the ftp servers because Dreamweaver created folders like this "c:\localhost_root_folder\client_folder\client_project_folder\www\.... and so on", and saves a file in there that has nothing to do with the currently open site.
Now I've looked for settings that would supress this behaviour but I could'nt find any.
Also, I really don't want to stop using the automatic upload function because it speeds up development time significantly.
Does anyone know how to work around this issue, or even better, does anyone know why this behaviour is happening and what it's purpose is?
    Thanks in advance.
    David

... what I really cannot understand is why the heck is Dreamweaver automatically uploading files that do not belong to the currently open site to the ftp server? I cannot think of any scenario in which this would be appropriate behaviour. I'd understand it if the files somehow contained links (CSS, JS, PHP, etc.) to the currently open site, but they don't! Dreamweaver doesn't "automatically upload" anything unless you have it set to on save. This is a bad practice if you aren't 100% sure of what you're doing. You may see it as a time saver, but if you have to go back two or three times and clean everything up, it isn't. Additionally, you select what is uploaded or not uploaded. If you choose to upload the entire root folder every time, then Dreamweaver will upload everything inside it... not automatically, but because you chose it.
As to the "dumb folder structure", when you define a site, YOU and YOU ALONE define the folder structure. If you are working in multiple sites at once (bad practice unless your are extremely meticulous about details) odds are you will sooner or later save a file from one site, with another site open in the Files Panel and Dreamweaver will save the file to the open site, not the one you opened it from (see why it's a bad practice to do this?).
It's just frustrating having to cleanup the ftp servers because
    Dreamweaver created folders like this
    "c:\localhost_root_folder\client_folder\client_project_folder\www\... .
and so on", and saves a file in there that has nothing to do with the
    currently open site.
It reads like you have defined a testing server and are using it when  you put files. C:\localhost is a testing server protocol. If you are  testing files and then attempt to put files from the testing server  instead of the root folder, they will have the filepath from the testing  server and not from the root folder file structure. Again a bad  practice unless you are meticulous about details and remember to switch  back to the root folder from the testing server panel BEFORE you put  files.

  • What about photos that *don't* belong to an event?

i love the new "events," but what about photos that are not part of an event?
for example, one day in 2001, i imported a bunch of photos from around the net to use as desktop pictures. but those photos don't exactly comprise an "event." that same day, my sister sent me one photo of her newborn baby. now, iphoto's calling all of that day's photos an event. although i love the concept of events, it bugs me to call certain groupings "events," when that's not what they are.
i can't seem to find a way to delete an event. is it mandatory that each photo belong to an event? if events have truly replaced "rolls," i imagine every photo must therefore belong to one.
i already have albums entitled "family" and "desktop pictures," so those photos are already organized elsewhere. but how are you guys handling random photos that don't exactly qualify to be called "events"? as i type, it occurs to me to create an event called "non-events." but i'd still love to hear how others are dealing with this.

An Event looks to be just another name for a Roll. And in all previous versions of iPhoto all photos had to belong to a Roll, whether you liked it or not, either named by your convention or by iPhoto's default.
I guess with the metaphor of film rolls fading quickly as digital cameras advance, a new moniker for the base catalog entry was necessary. Suits me fine as long as the equivalent functionality is preserved with new features a bonus worth the price of "upgrading".
I have not tried the switch to the new iLife iPhoto version yet (iMovie 8 is a HUGE step backwards so my caution meter is on FULL alert), as I have the same reservations. I have scrupulously kept Rolls organized by import date and require all that existing metadata be transferred perfectly.

  • Smart mailbox sometimes showing messages that don't belong there

Occasionally my Smart mailbox will contain a couple of mails that don't match the rules, along with everything else that should be there. If I select another mailbox and then reselect the Smart mailbox in question it then shows the correct mails.
Usually this seems to happen when my laptop is awoken from sleep or mail is first loaded, but it has happened from just selecting the mailbox. The misplaced e-mails almost always seem to be unread mails from another mailbox which throws my unread count on this smart mailbox.
I have tried rebuilding my mail index and this hasn't helped.
    Any ideas/solutions gratefully appreciated?

    Trash bin issues!!
I have no idea why or how these folders/files got in the Trash, but I keep getting error messages because these files are protected.

System folders, Users folder, my Named User folder, (which includes files on my hard drive)
Folder Named: --> System: which includes a Library folder, CoreServices, then file boot.efi BootX
Now, I have no idea on what to do ?? Like I said, I have no idea how this got into my Trash

    Thank you in advance

They don't get there by accident.
The System folder belongs at the root of the hard drive where the Applications, Library, and Users folders are also located.
Backups.backupd is a TM backup folder and should be on your TM backup drive. It would only appear on your hard drive if you designated it as the TM backup drive (a definite no-no.)

  • Has anyone received text messages that don't belong to the actual sender?

I have an iphone 4S, iOS 7.1.2.  About a week ago, I received a text from my husband who has a new Samsung Galaxy 5.  Immediately afterward, I received two more texts from him that said "I'm at the movies" then "I'm driving".  He said that he didn't send those two texts.  Did someone somehow get my password and got into the cloud to send these texts ?  Am I going to have to change my iTunes password again ?  I've been doing this a lot recently with almost everything internet related.

If someone has your Apple ID credentials, they could access some information, including iMessages. An Apple ID will not give the any access to SMS messages. Anything between you and your husband is going to be an SMS. Two step verification is a way to make it more difficult for someone to access an account such as you iCloud account or Google account.
If you have sensitive information on your phone, a password is a good idea. It would also prevent someone from picking up the phone, using it and running up your bill. I maintain that the first, most important security measure is simply not to leave your phone lying around where other people can pick it up. Treat it like your wallet. You wouldn't leave your walled on your office desk and go off to a two hour meeting.
All of these security measures are a fine idea. However, I want to stress that the messages you received do not seem to indicate that anything has been compromised.

  • Clips don't belong in project

I am putting together a video for the seniors in my school. It is made up of video clips and still images. Every time I open the video to work on it, I get a message that says I have 60 clips that do not belong in this project. It even gives me a list of their titles. They are all photos that are most definitely in the video right now. It always asks if I want to trash the 60 clips. I have been hesitant to do that. I am concerned that suddenly all 60 photos might disappear from the senior video. Can someone shed some light on why this is happening?
    Thanks!
    Robert

Robert, does the project reside on an external hard drive? If so, check to be sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended. If it's not that format, iMovie cannot properly save changes to the disk. That can cause the symptoms you describe.
The problem could also be caused by corruption that sometimes occurs after emptying the iMovie trash. One form of this corruption is that iMovie "forgets" clips on the Timeline. As a result, iMovie doesn't recognize those files in the Media folder. When you open the project, iMovie asks about them.
Whatever is going on probably isn't good. And depending on what that is, you could lose some stuff. Each time we save in iMovie, it automatically discards files the project no longer needs. It may decide to discard these files on its own.
So before doing anything, make a backup of the entire project folder so if problems worsen, you don't lose stuff. Use the Finder's Duplicate command to duplicate the entire project folder.
The files that it is asking about may be the still image files you imported to the project. It may not hurt anything to lose those, but you won't be able to re-edit them. Not a big deal. My guess is you've already lost the ability to re-edit them or iMovie wouldn't be asking. You might try discarding them to see what happens, and revert to the backup if bad things happen. My guess is the roof won't fall in and you'll be able to finish the project.

  • Does someone know when our movie project and finally our iDVD project is done, can we erase the clip that we had imported in iMovie without danger?  Or we have to keep the clip in iMovie until the DVD are burn?

Does someone know when our movie project and finally our iDVD project is done, can we erase the clip that we had imported in iMovie without danger?  Or we have to keep the clip in iMovie until the DVD are burn?

    Hi
Most processes in Non destructive Video editing is based on that the raw-material is safe and intact. So by trashing it most things can or will go wrong.
So e.g. in iMovie project - there is NO Movie - just a small text document refering to Your raw-material, audio files and photos (within or not in iPhoto Library) on how they are to act together to Play Your Movie.
And by changing any of them the Movie project will be affected or destroyed.
reg. iDVD there is also a link back to iMovie - Most famous to set of the iDVD BUG !
To do that - one starts a new iDVD project and add movies etc. Then find something i one movie in need to be adjusted. Closing iDVD and returning to iMovie and doing this. Then when back to iDVD it will notice and ask You to Up-date or Cancel. Neither works. The iDVD project is harmed. All Chapters now point to Chapter One and more strange things happens.
the medicine I use - I start a brand new iDVD Project and re-do it and hopefully not fine any more to be fixed in the movie.
This indicates the strong link inbetween iDVD and iMovie and I would not touch anything in iMovie till DVD is Burned and Ready AND Plays Well !
    Yours Bengt W
