Files transcoded to ProRes from Sony NX5 Crash everything...

Using FCP 7 on a MacPro our client has been using FCP's Log & Transfer to transcode the AVCHD files shot w/ a Sony NX5 to Apple's ProRes.
I was told "The transcoded files crash the finder, quicktime and FCP and often flicker green with distorted audio."
These same files will play normally when tested on a MacBook Pro.
The same AVCHD files from the NX5 where then transcoded to ProRes on the MacBook Pro w/ no playback or crashing issues. Once the files are brought to the MacPro the crashing happens again.
FCP Preferences have been trashed and the MacPro runs the latest FCP 7 and OSX Snow Leopard.
This is a little hard to diagnose because I'm not located where the troubled MacPro is...
Any Insight?

Well I guess I should have mentioned that they are using a Drobo S and when disconnected, the problems disappear. From my client's email:
"...If I try playing back from the Drobo S it falters, blinks green, the audio gets distorted and then it fails. Also, if I try to copy anything off the drobo onto another drive I get a warning that says...
'The finder can't complete operation because some data in " " can't be read or written. (Error Code - 36)' "
I called Drobo and they told me the usual Try different FW 800 ports/cables, run Disk Warrior on Drobo, re-format, install new firmware, etc
This Drobo S unit is brand new..not sure what to think!

Make sure you are running FCP 7.0.3. That version deals with files from the NX5 the best. If you are on a previous version, like FCP 6....you will need to use CLIPWRAP2 from Divergentmedia.com. As the specific AVCHD format the NX5 uses is something that FCP 6 cannot really deal with.
Gotta love new camera formats.

CS4 Importing SD video from Sony NX5

I can import it but it looks blurry and soft and needs to be rendered. The video comes from Sony NX5 tapeless camera. It records SD in mpeg2 instead of DV. The softness seems to happen during this conversion, the original video looks sharp when viewing it in Windows Media Player.
How can I import it without making it look soft?

How to work with DPX files in Primere pro from Sony Fs700 with Odyssey 7q

H i got sequence recorded from Sony FS700 with help of Odyssey 7q it is DPX images how can i get it into Primere pro CC?i try to import files it works but each DPX file last 5 sec long in time line.what should i do?

I dont use DPX but it sound like you need to import them as an image seqeunce.
Go to the folder on your harddrive, select the first image and be sure Image Sequence is checked and open.

Which sony camera? there are a lot.
Yes, it needs to convert. AVCHD isn't a format that most editing systems deal with natively. You will be converting it to ProRes. The conversion time is dependent on too many factors to give a precise number. Based on computer used, processors, RAM, how much footage, where it will be stored...all of that. The conversion doesn't degrade the image.

Unable to open raw files from Sony A6000

I get this message:"Could not complete your request because the file appears to be from a camera model which is not supported by the installed version of Camera Raw," when I try to open files from the Sony A6000 though I have downloaded the most recent verisions of Camera Raw. The converter works but not CS5.
Any suggestion from anyone.

Your CS5 is too old and cannot be updated to support the Alpha 6000 which requires Camera Raw 8.4 or newer.
You can either upgrade to PS-CS6 or PS-CC or the free option is to convert your ARW raw files to DNGs with the DNG Converter 8.4 or newer, and those DNGs can be opened in the older ACR plug-in with CS5.

How do I open photo files from Sony A7 and Nikon 7000?

I am currently using CS5 Extended but can not open files from Sony A7 camera I just bought. Do I need to upgrade to CS6 where I can use camera raw 8.3 ?
With CS6 can I still open files from my Nikon 7000 in format of DNG? Please advise.

Well, sigh, that's not going to work.
I love how I can do months of research to choose the best camera for my needs and budget, which is NO easy task these days, but surprisingly find it on the unsupported list when it's a very popular camera. So, while it seems to support a whole bunch of other AVCHD options from Sony, not the NEX cameras.
The NEX cameras are the latest generation of mirrorless cameras (which, ironically, are great b/c they give dSLR quality still images while actually producing HD video that always records silently and stays in focus b/c it's mirrorless). The NEX 7 was just reviewed as Camera of the Year.
Bleh. Oh well. Maybe someday.
And, for anyone reading, Roxio Toast Titanium did convert it just fine but it took about 20 min or my time to set up a handful of clips and then a couple hours to complete converting them for the quality I was looking for. One was about 10 minutes of a kids' performance on Christmas and it took a long time. It's just not feasible given how many video clips I do with the camera a week - well, feasible when you consider all the cameras where this would be seamless.

Sony sx50 is on the list of supported cameras and .CR2 on the list of supported files!

Hi,
ACR 7.3 should aplly to PSE 11 - it is on mine.
If you load the editor, go to the Help menu and see what it displays for About Plug-in -> Camera RAW - see which version is loaded.
There should be an updates option too, towards the bottom of the list - I'm on a PC so it may be different if you are on a MAC

Premiere Pro v6.0.3 won't accept drag & dropped files from Sony's XDCAM Browser v2.1

Premiere Pro reports a "generic file import" error when I try to drag & drop my video files (.mxf) from Sony's XDCAM browser directly into Premiere Pro project window. However, I can drag & drop the same file(s) directly from a file folder on my computer and I can also use the "file import" from Premiere Pro drop down menu to import the same files with no problems.
Also, I can successfully drag & drop video files (.m2ts) from Sony's Content Management Utility into Premiere.
But why can't I drag and drop the same files (.mxf) directly from my Sony XDCAM Browser. It appears to me that my issue is related specifically to XDCAM Browser & the .mxf files it supports (note: Sony's Content Management Utility does support .mxf files so I can't simply use that Utility).

You need to use the Media Browser within Premiere
to import these files.
Copy the entire contents of the media card to an internal drive first.

Every model of a manufacture's camera have a different RAW format and, therefore, you'll have to wait until Apple receives the necessary information from Sony so they can create a RAW Compatibility Updater that includes that model.
In the meantime you can try the Adobe RAW converter with might support that camera model to create a dmg file that iPhoto will recognize and begging shooting the highest resolution jpegs until the updater is released.

Then you need 2 adaptors – a Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor and a FW 400 4 pin to FW800 9 pin adaptor. (Perhaps you already have the latter.)
From your description it sounds like your Mac and FCP should recognize the camera, which is encouraging. Next, you choose an event and select import media from the drop down menu.
If you start play and it reports no data, it's possible you're at the end of a tape. So hit the rewind and hopefully things will be good. If they are, you can first hit the play icon in the import window and either Import or Create Archive buttons.

I just did this the other day for my wife, took some books that she purchased on her Sony Reader and moved them to her new PB. You need to download Calibre ( free) and also download software that will remove the DRM from the books that are on the Sony. I bought it from www.ebook-converter.com , was $29.95 US. I've read that there are also free ones out there but I went with this b/c it was mentioned in several posts. Go to your reader library on line, download the book, use the DRM and Calibre and then you'll have the file to transfer to your PB. You'll also need an e-pub reader, several on the Appworld, I used Book Reader.Of course I bought and paid for the Sony books so I see nothing wrong in just getting them to a devise that I want to read them on. This same process works for library books that you check out that have DRM enbedded. I Hope this helps.
