Files which haven't moved appearently can't be found/don't work

So here's the deal: I'm running Premiere Elements 7, and my problems with it are usually minimal, until today. I was working on a project with a fair amount of clips, all of which were edited quite a bit, a process I would not want to repeat. Suddenly, the program crashed, which isn't too unusual, except when I opened my project, 99% of the video clips were replaced with the "media off-line" message when videos can not be found. None of the video files have changed or moved in any way, but when I try to relocate them, Premiere says "The selected file cannot be linked because its video type does not match the original file's audio and video type" which is complete BS. All the effects and whatnot on the videos in the project are still there, it's just a matter of PE being annoying. Does anyone know how to fix this and get 12 hours of work back?
When viewing the EDIT>Project Tab in PE, it says under media type, that the missing files are "Offline" where everything that still works is "Movie"

Yes, I like yelling at the software. I also will start looking at computer Web sites, and spec'ing new boxes. My computer sees me doing this and then starts to behave better!
Along with Steve's questions, pay special attention to the I/O sub-system, i.e. your computer's HHD's (Hard Disc Drives). Explaining exactly what you have, how they are connected, i.e. 3x 250GB 7200RPM SATA II internals, 1x 1TB Maxtor 7200RPM FireWire-800 external, etc.. Then tell us how you are using these HDD's, i.e. C:\ OS and programs w/ Windows Page File, D:\ media only, E:\ Projects and Scratch Disks, F:\ Captured files, etc.
I also recommend that one does a regime of Saves, Save_As and Save_As_a_Copy, while doing an involved edit. Obviously, we all know what Save (Ctrl-s) does - it overwrites the existing .PREL (Project file), in the location where you originally placed it. This will also trigger the AutoSave function, if not disabled.
Next we have the two "Save_As" functions. The both have a purpose, and are very slightly different. Save_As will allow you to NOT overwrite your original Project file, if you change the name. I like to numerically increment these, i.e. [Project Name]_01, _02, etc. What sets it apart from its cousin, Save_As_a_Copy, is that it will then let you keep working on your new [Project Name]_01 file. Your original is now NOT in PrE. The new, incremented version is. Your original is safe and will remain untouched. I will use this function, as I edit. Before a big change, or a series of experiments, I'll do the Save_As, increment by 1, and then do the work. If it looks good, I immediately do a Save_As_a_Copy. I place this in a separate folder, and make sure that "Copy" is in the new file name. The big difference is that I am NOT now working on that file, it is just saved, and is not loaded into PrE. At the end of the day, I always do a Save_As_a_Copy, plus my normal Save. Putting my Save_As_a_Copy files into another folder helps me keep track of all of the versions. It's easy to do and I'm seldom too far from a recently saved version someplace.
This gives me a "bread crumb" trail to some "last known good" versions of my Project, plus I have the AutoSaves too. While editing, I'll hit Ctrl-s (Save) often. This comes from the old days, when I used Pinnacle. You never did more than two things, without hitting Ctrl-s. I probably do this more often, than is needed, but it is such a habit, and does not hurt, so long as I have my Save_As and Save_As_a_Copy files.
When one encounters any sort of Media Offline situation, regardless of the cause, the first thing that I do is a Save_As, BEFORE I do anything else. This keeps my original Project file untouched, and allows me to explore the Media Offline issue without touching that original. You never know when you might need it exactly as it was. Because I did the Save_As, all changes that I make are now in the new file, because it's now the one loaded into PrE.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Error occured while converting the file track #1 the required disk can't be found

I have old CDs, I have new CDs and I have a relatively new MacBook Pro (3 years old) running current software on 10.9.4 OSX Mavericks. My updates are good on my iTunes but it won't let me import ANY CDs that I OWN! Is this the new Apple and it's iTunes update?
Can we not legally put our CDs onto our phones or iPad/iPods any longer? Must I go garage sale-ing for a personal CD player? The code reads; "Error occured while converting the file track #1 the required disk can't be found". My cd drive is fine btw. It reads and shows on my desktop and will also play when I double click the CD icon and play the .aiff file.

I kind of have the suspicion if you were no longer allowed to put CDs on iPods it would be front page news, not something you alone would discover.  Anyway, there would probably be a clear message to that effect rather than a technical error message.   I would take the technical problem route first rather than suspect you have been targeted for persecution.
Have you restarted iTunes?  Have you tried restarting your computer?
Personally I prefer third party rippers such as XLD and Max and you could certainly try one of those to at least isolate the issue to iTunes.

  • Please help!  v. 6.0 all files missing (haven't moved any, though)

    Hello everyone,
I am using Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 and all of my files are "missing".  Each one has that little yellow ? in the left corner.
    Before you ask....
    1. I have NOT deleted any picutures/vidoes
    2. I have NOT moved any pictures/videos
    3. I have NOT upgraded the computer operating system
    4. In short, we have done NOTHING to these photos
I am baffled beyond belief.  As you can imagine, we have tons of phones dating back to 2003 of our daughter...and terrified all has been lost.  Please tell me there is a solution.  All the thumbnails are showing...but again, each one has that yellow "?" in the left corner.  I am so frustrated that I never want to use this program again.  And the fact that its older shouldn't matter.  Feel like just dumping all future things in the Windows Picture folder and forget it.  At least I wouldn't have to worry about "reconnecting" anything again.
    Hoping someone here can help.
    Signed,
    Desperately seeking a solution

If you are on Windows, a possible cause of this is that if your photos are on an external drive, and that drive has changed letters. If so, change the drive letter back.
But please tell us, what hard drive are the photos located on. Please tell us your operating system. And definitely follow Andromeda14's suggestion to see if the actual location of the photos matches the location that PSE thinks they are stored at.

  • Broken Links in iTunes - files have not been moved

    Hi,
I'm running iTunes on my XP machine. I have about 10,000 tracks in my library. Every so often (well quite often nowadays) I get a load of tracks that have the exclamation mark next to them saying the file can't be found. I have not moved any of the tracks. When I double click ont he first offending track it asks if I want to locate it. I click OK, and it presents the folder where the file actually is (and always has been!) I then have to go through the rest of my library - each track with an exclamation mark just needs to be double clicked and it miraculously remembers where the file is!
    OK, so the questions are:
    1) Why is iTunes forgetting the locations of files that haven't moved? I'm guessing there might be some issue with the iTunes Music Library.xml - but I ahve no idea what.
    2) Can I stop it happening? Obviously the best solution is to dump windows and buy a mac - which will be happening in a month or so...
    3) If I can't stop it happening, is there a way for iTuens to just show me the broken links so that I can go through the double-clicking process easily?
    4) If I delete the library and recreate, will iTuens remember things like bespoke artwork, ratings, etc?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    X.

+"4) Absolutely not; the ITL file holds ratings, playcount, date added and other metadata that will be lost. And you can't get it back by rebuilding your library from the XML file."+
Actually, this is exactly what you can do with the XML file. Prior to iTunes 5.0, importing the XML did not capture rating, playcounts, etc. even though the data was written to the XML file. Since then, you can recreate your Library completely by importing the XML file.
A while ago I performed two tests:
    a) One where I deleted the total song references from the Library, then 'imported' the XML file (from a previously saved iteration)
    b) The other, I opened iTunes with no Library database to start, forcing it to act like a new install, then imported the XML file
In both cases, the XML file was completely read, including Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes. All playlists (both Smart & Static) were recreated in their proper folders. It seems to have recreated the Library almost as well as the ITL file would. Looks as if iTunes v6.0.1 (and later) now reads and uses the complete XML file upon 'import'.
I say 'almost', as there were settings differences when starting from a 'virgin' iTunes. Also (and this is important), the create/load time when using the XML file was severely long. iTunes needed to read, interpret, and act on the information within the XML file and that took a long time. At that time, I had close to 12,000 song references and over two dozen playlists. Using a 'good' backup ITL file is an almost instantaneous fix.
Bottom line: Either file will work in recreating the Library. A backup ITL file, in my opinion, is still the easiest and fastest way to recreate your Library if one has a choice. In some cases, where one cannot place the music into the correct path for the ITL file to work properly, one can globally change the XML file to reflect the new path and use that for a very close approximation. I would suggest making and archiving legacy copies of both files a big part of your backup strategy (along with the music files, of course).
Hope this clears things up for you.
    Best of Luck

I recently updated the iOS on my ipad 3 and lost all my files in the process. How do I recover my lost files which were not previously backed up?

If you don't have them backed up somewhere, then there's little possibility of recovering them. There are some utilities that can in some cases recover an inadvertently-deleted photo, but I've found none that can recover photos or other data from an iPad that was erased as part of an iOS upgrade. You can do a web search for something like "iPhone photo recovery" and you'll find some utilities you can try.

I recently uploaded 10.8, but I have a number of VALUABLE old files which I can no longer read because "power PC applications are no longer supported.  How can I retrieve them"?

Here is a post I assembled for another with a similar problem:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3. Upgrade to an Intel compatible versions of your software, or find alternatives that will open your data files;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

I was having an issue opening a spreadsheet with the file extension .xlsm. This appears as an attachment from a client which means macros were utilized when creating the spreadsheet. The problem lies in. The iPads ability to open the attachment. I downloaded the numbers app thinking this would be a default software to open any and all spreadsheets.

    Ipad 2- iOS5

You may need a version without macros on it. Unfortunately, pretty much all apps are skinned down versions of their original program, often with less functionality. For example in a word document I can italicize, bold and underline, but I only have a handful of fonts to play with and I don't think I can insert tables or images.
It is very possible that the app simply cannot run macros, which means that document may never work on an iPad.

When you reinstalled Yosemite did you create a new initial admin account? If so, then after you migrated your old account did you log into it?
If you need to you can reset permissions for your user account:
Reset User Permissions and ACLs in Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
From the Utilities menu select Terminal. At the Terminal prompt enter: resetpassword. Press RETURN. When the window opens select your startup drive where it says "Select the volume containing the user account:" At the bottom of the window you will see, "Reset Home folder permissions and ACLs." Click on the Reset button.

  • Can't create a partition - 'some files could not be moved'

    Hi folks,
I'm trying to install Boot Camp on my MBP C2D, 2.33GHz, 3GB RAM, x1600 128. I set the size of the partition and after a long time get an error that the partition could not be created, because some files could not be moved. It tells me to go into disk utility and restore the Mac OS drive to a single partition and install OSX again.
I'm at university so I can't reinstall OSX, and don't want to. As I've read from around the net this problem means there is a big file somewhere that can't be moved, or something similar. What I've done is check my disk with iDefrag, which says its only 0.7% fragmented, I've 'erased' my free space, I've deleted even more stuff off my Mac HD (have 35 or so GB free, only want a 5GB partition), I've verified and fixed both the drive and permissions in disk utility and disk ulitity from a CD boot, and tried changing the size of the partition. I tried creating a partition in disk utility, and was told it could not be done because there was not enough space (there definately was). I've used a bunch of tools to clean up my computer, re-indexed spotlight, and I'm at the end of my rope of ideas. I've had bootcamp many times on this laptop before, so am totally at a loss what to do. Does anyone have any ideas? Again, I can't reinstall OSX/wipe the drive.
    I'm using Leopard, 10.5.5.
    Thanks!

I am having the same problem. I went from 40 GB to 230 GB of free disk space. Tried creating a partition with 100, 80, 60 GB, but it slaps me with the same error message each time. It is ridiculous to ask users to backup and restore their information (by the way, it should say take a long process of backing up all your files, reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling your operating system together with all applications). I do have an external drive, but it is already full. Why else would anyone buy it? To wait for something like a boot camp error to happen and ask me to backup my stuff? There are big files on my computer and if now over 230 GB is not enough free space for it to move them around then I can really be ashamed for ever buying such an expensive computer which can't do a simple task as creating a partition.
