Files with "QuickTime" in the name disappearing

This is the first time I've ever seen this. I'm a customer support technician at a university and a student brought in a laptop where "iTunes wasn't working". It was packed with virii and spyware, which we removed. The computer now checks out completely using every scan we can come up with. That said, iTunes still doesn't work (it opens up with no errors, but pressing play doesn't cause the song to start playing--play button doesn't switch to pause, etc.). So, following the troubleshooting page at apple.com/support I went to check out the QuickTime control panel...but it wasn't there. So, I went to check the QuickTime folder at C:\Program Files\QuickTime...and it wasn't there. So, I checked the Add & Remove Programs control panel and QuickTime showed up. I uninstalled it and iTunes. Reinstalled. Same deal. It gets weirder.
I tried downloading the standalone QuickTime installer, but when I plugged in my USB flash drive to copy the installer over...it didn't show up. Eject it, plug it back into my computer...and it shows up. So, I created a text file on the laptop in question and named it "QuickTimeInstaller.txt" and it instantly disappeared once the rename took effect. The first thing that comes to mind is a virus, but I have scoured the web and can't find any mention of a virus that specifically targets QuickTime like this.
Has anyone run into a problem like this before?
-Joel

I'm not too sure how a standalone install will help being as this problem persists after doing a complete uninstall of both QuickTime and iTunes. When trying to copy the standalone installer over, it disappears. I can rename it and it shows up just fine, but I fail to see how simply doing a reinstall with a standalone installer will resolve the problem. At this point we're very close to simply rebuilding the computer.

  • How move file with space in the name to another foler on Linux from ABAP?

    Hi experts,
    My requirement is to move the file on Linux to another folder via ABAP program.
    IN SM49 is defined ZMOVE command for "mv" operating system command. In ABAP, fm:
    SXPG_COMMAND_EXECUTE calls ZMOVE external command to move the file to another folder.
    But in case that file has space in the file name, then the fm gives error and the file can not be moved.
    I have tried as given in the Note 1152084 - Parameter for external commands but it doesn't work.
    Don't know if the reason is that the note is for Windows or Unix and we have Linux.
    So, I have tried with ''%file name%' and '''file name'''.
    PLease advice hoe to move file on Linux to another folder from ABAP program if the file has spec in the name.
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind regards,
    Danijela Zivanovic

    Hi,
    You can also try :
    mv "file\ name" /<path_to_new_dir>
    (Put "\" before each space)

  • LibreOffice can't open files with spaces in the name

    Hi, so I recently installed LibreOffice (from extra) over go-OO. I know the site says it's not for production use but I have heard good things about the stability of the current version so I decided to see if it was in a usable state. In general things are going great, but I do have the problem mentioned in the thread title. The program has trouble parsing the spaces, and instead I am trying to open each space-delimited section of the filename as a separate file. Trying to open "My File.odt", for example, will simply return two error messages, one about "path/to/current/directory/My" not existing, and another about "path/to/current/directory/File.odt" not existing. I can't seem to get around this behaviour and, surprisingly, I can't find anything on it by Googling.
    I know that LO is in beta and this may just be a bug that is being worked on, but since I can only find one reference to it on the net I thought that maybe others were not having this problem or had found a way around it.  Can anyone provide any insight? Cheers!

    #    if "$sd_prog/$sd_binary" $*; then
    #   exit 0
    #    fi
    #    unset QSTART_CHECK_ONLY
    #fi
    I noticed that commenting out that code allows LibreOffice to open spaced filenames, but seems to slightly increase startup time.
    I tried replacing $* with "$*", and opening from the command line seems to work even for files with spaced names, with the faster startup time too. The only problem is that now LO does not work at all by clicking; only from command line.

  • Temporary files with a "~" in the file name

    when i open an html file i see that another file with the same name, plus a tilde sign (~) after it, is automatically created in the folder that this file sits in. this is supposedly a temporary file? these files are  NOT temporary, they never go away. and they start adding up in my folder and it gets very confusing as to which file i'm working on. sometimes there will be a file with two "~ ~" in them.
    when i close the "original file", the tilde files don't disappear, they stay. On top of that, to make things more confusing, there is also some weird autosave function and i also get files that say filename(Autosaved). Before i know it there are 10 files with various names sitting there and it gets very confusing to know what is the "real" file.  does anyone know how to stop the creation of these "temporary" files? i'm enclosing a screenshot that shows all these files with tildes and the autosaved  file.

    Sorted. Well sort of. I still have the problem but I know why. Apparently O2 will not allow anyone to send an attachment which has a space in the name. They claim that this reduces spam - no idea why they think that will stop spam but there you go...

  • Importing CD to Artist folder\Album folder\file with track number and name:

    I have a problem then importing my cd’s to my harddisk using iTunes.
    On my previous pc I got what I want, Artist folder, Album folder and file with track number and name:
    e.g.
    D:\My Music\B.B. King\Blues On The Bayou\01 Blues Boys Tune.mp3
    D:\My Music\B.B. King\Blues On The Bayou\02 Bad Case Of Love.mp3
    D:\My Music\B.B. King\Blues On The Bayou\03 I'll Survive.mp3
    But now I get:
    D:\My Music\Compilations\Blues On The Bayou\01 Blues Boys Tune.mp3
    D:\My Music\ Compilations \02 Bad Case Of Love.mp3
    D:\My Music\ Compilations \03 I'll Survive.mp3
    In iTunes my settings are Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced: iTunes Music folder: D:\My Music and checkmark in both: “Keep iTunes Music folder organized” and “Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library”.
    My version of iTunes is 8.0.1.11
    Thanks in advance
    Peter

    It will depend on the album. Gracenote considers anthologies, a collection of tracks by the same artist taken from different albums, as a compilation. In iTunes the compliation setting should really only be applied to a collection of tracks by different artists.

  • Can't open a file with spaces on the filename.

    Lets say I have a file:
    /home/orv/Open - Me - Please.txt
    When I double click to open that file with any program, the result is something like this:
    "Unable to find /home/orv/Open%20-%20Me%20-%20Please.txt"
    I'm not sure what to call that process of converting the file name so I've been unable to google it up to find a fix or a way to change the behavior of the file manager.
    I've checked the settings in Nautilus and nothings there. Any clues? Thank you!

    I tried removing everything in my home directory to erase all settings, still the same problem.
    I tried using a different file manager and still the same problem.
    Here's another example of my problem and its quirks:
    Lets say I have a file called:
    /home/orv/I am a Movie.avi
    In nautilus or thunar, double-clicking that file so I can play it with Mplayer will give an error:
    Failed to open file:///home/orv/I%20am%20a%20Movie.avi
    However, when I drag and drop using the file manager into Mplayer, it works.
    So my problem is this automatic conversion of whitespaces into the %20 which I don't know how to turn off.

  • Try to open mov file with quicktime, says can't open pdf files.

    Hi to everyone,
    Suddenly I try to open a mov, any mov file, with quicktime 10.4 and some times opens the finder and nothing more, some times says that it cannot open one pdf document ( a document I actually have but never try to open with QT). some times QT says it canot open some png or jpg file.
    But I double click mov files. And the incoherence is permanent, I mean that for the same movie file says it can't open the same pdf file, and in other file the same png, or the same jpg.. it depends on the mov file I try to open.  Like if somewhere, somme kind of cache, adresse or reference is wrong.
    this is the text of one of those messages when I double click a mov file:
    "The document “phoenixRoomfillerB_v001_0104.jpg” could not be opened. QuickTime Player cannot open files in the “JPEG image” format."
    And if I try again and again, at some point QT open only the finder window.
    The weird thing is that on the finder window i can see the preview and play the preview. and the same mov files play well with VLC. And if I copy the mov file to my desktop it plays well unless QT start to open only the finder window, if that happens it does not work anymore with any file.
    The files are on an external drive with 3 partitions.
    And I make all the possible cleaning that I can:
    I am the administrator of the imac and I am the only one to use it.
    I am the owner of the volume
    I use disk utility to check and everything is ok
    I use onyx to clean as much as possible, cache, boot, volume structure, smart status, home folder permissions, kernel, extensions, QT components, etc. and everything works fine.

  • Zip.ZipInputStream cannot extract files with Chinese chars in name

    Dear friends,
    Peace b upon u!
    I am trying to read a zip file (~3000 files)containing one
    or more files with Chinese, Japanese or Korean names, the
    getNextEntry method throws an IllegalArgumentException as below after extracting just ~300 files as below:-
    java.lang.IllegalArgumentException
            at java.util.zip.ZipInputStream.getUTF8String(Unknown Source)
            at java.util.zip.ZipInputStream.readLOC(Unknown Source)
            at java.util.zip.ZipInputStream.getNextEntry(Unknown Source)
            at testZipFiles.getZipFiles(testZipFiles.java:65)
            at testZipFiles.main(testZipFiles.java:18) issue:java.util.zip.ZipInputStream cannot extract files with Chinese chars in name
    Category java:classes_util_jarzip
    Plz let me know 1 of the ways which I can solve this issue.
    1)if someone has JAVA DCOMPILER plz send the SOURCE Code
    for the ZipInputStream.class to me..I need to edit it using 1 of the solutions as provided below which I googled.
    2)If there is an alternate or upgraded java.util.zip.ZipInputStream or any org.apache.tools.zip.* package which can read such files..If yes where I can download the same on net.
    3)Any other easier solution, which can let me extract all files (by excluding Chinese files thru CATCH) without the extractor process to fail altogether.
    On net I found that the only solution with this is:-
    - edit the new ZipEntry, remove the static initializer that calls
    the native methods initIDs().
    this step seems a bit scary, but it's according to the
    workaround
    to bug #4244499 (the workaround of Olive64, THU JUN 05
    01:55 P.M. 2003),
    that handles a similar bug at the ZipOutputStream.
    Now you have a ZipInputStream that supports multi-bytes
    entry names.
    to extract the zip file, using the fixed code that is offered
    above,
    create a function that gets an "encoding" string, a "destPath"
    string
    and a "sourceFile" (zipped) and does :
    ZipInputStream zipinputstream = null;
    ZipEntry zipentry;
    zipinputstream = new ZipInputStream(new FileInputStream
    (sourceFile),encoding);
    zipentry = zipinputstream.getNextEntry();
    while (zipentry != null) { //for each entry to be extracted
        String entryName = zipentry.getName();
        int n;
        FileOutputStream fileoutputstream = new FileOutputStream
    ( destPath + entryName );
        while ((n = zipinputstream.read(buf, 0, 1024)) > -1)
            fileoutputstream.write(buf, 0, n);
        fileoutputstream.close();
        zipinputstream.closeEntry();
        zipentry = zipinputstream.getNextEntry();
    }//while
    zipinputstream.close();

    Hi friend,
    We'd better to ask one question in each thread. If you have another issue, you can consider to open up a new thread in this forum.
    Now for the first question, do you mean this picture? It throws access exception in archive2.
    If so , because your extractPath is a path, not a directory.You should add +"xxx.zip". For more information, please refer to
    ZipFile.Open
    Method (String, ZipArchiveMode).
    For the second question, you can use the following code to skip the error message.
    while (true)
    try
    //do something;
    catch (Exception ex)
    { continue; }
    Good day!

  • I can't blow up PDF files with QuickTIme 10.1

    I can't blow up PDF files with QuickTIme 10.1 on my MacBook Pro 10.74. What am I doing wrong? For example, on-line menus for restaurants come up very small and only show me one page.

    I updated from within the Adobe Reader X program (Help > Check for Updates) and it tells me: No updates available. Installed: Adober Reader X (10.1.8) MUI
    Is 11.0.5 something I would have to access another way?
    Also, I'm still not sure if that would fix my problem. It seems most people with the "Access Denied" error had it fixed with the very first 10.1 update, and I have 10.1.8, so I'm not sure what's causing mine.

  • Converting mov files with Quicktime Player for iDevices

    I wasn't sure if should post this under iPad or here or at all as it is about coding, but it is about coding for Apple iDevices that can't display Flash, using Quicktime Player or QT Player 7 Pro:
    I'm trying to add the ability for Apple iDevices that can't display tutorials I created in Flash, to see them with H.264. I read that I can simply open the original tutorial that luckily is a .mov file with Quicktime Player 10 in Snow Leopard and File > Save For Web and QT will convert to H.264 and also output several files needed to upload to your server.
    But the only options are for iPhone, iPhone (cellular) and Computer. I assume an iPod would use the iPhone file, but iPad didn't exist yet.
    I chose iPhone and Computer for my test. I got 2 .m4v files a .jpg, a small .mov and a .html page with the code I needed to copy/paste to my target html page.
    Uploaded the files and could see the tutorial movie with my iPad fine. Using FireFox, I saw the beginning of the movie, then got the beachball. After a long wait, I tried a force quit and found that my Mac Pro was crashed too so had to hard shut down. Hate that.
    Rebooted the computer. Tried accessing with Safari this time and it worked fine.
    I also own Quicktime Player 7 Pro pre Snow Leopard (I'm running Snow Leopard now) and tried the conversion with it and noticed a few more config choices, like for frame rate. But the resulting code was about 29 lines of code with expected parameters versus 2 lines of code in the QT Player code which actually really surprised me. With both apps they have JavaScript references for the head tab to files on Apple's library on their site.
    So.. I'm wondering why FF and my computer crash, I did output for computer as well as iPhone. And what to do for FF users and the fact that there's no specific output for iPad, am I OK just using the iPhone output since I can see the file OK on my iPad test.
    Last, I've been reading about HTML5 versus Flash, but assume that what both my QT apps are outputting is HTML4. In the QT Player code there isn't even an embed tag, let alone the video tag I've read about, just a href to the exported Saved For Web .mov file, which I assume must point to the .m4v files that QT outputs and puts in the same folder as the other files, but there's no direct reference to them.
    Sorry for the length, or if this isn't the place for these questions, but I do want to get this right before I convert about 20 tutorials
    I wonder if I should wait until Lion and see if QT is changed to fix the FF crash and adds output for iPad?
    One last thing: when you access the converted file with an iPad, first you see a jpg of the first frame with "Click to Play" in the center. When you do, you get the movie with a play triangle which you have to press to actually start the movie. But when you access the same html file with Safari, all you have to do is click the "Click to Play" and the movie starts as expected. Bug?

    QuickTime X and QuickTime Player Pro create slightly different html code (but it all works about the same way). The "click to play" image file, a "reference" movie, multiple versions for different devices and the html code to preview the page and use as copy/paste into your Web page.
    QuickTime X has fewer options than QuickTime Player Pro. The iPhone preset works just fine on the iPad.
    Your Firefox crash may have been just coincidence and I doubt it was caused by the page code.
    You may want to wait a while longer for the HTML 5 code because browser support is still in the learning stage and millions of PC users still use out of date browsers.
    The reference movie points to the different versions of the file. The code "reads" the device and serves up the correct version for it.
    I don't own an iPad but I suspect it works like my iPod Touch. All of my QuickTime files have the play "triangle" so the click to play image style page requires two clicks on it.

  • Can't view .mov file with quicktime

    Hello. I need help viewing a .mov file with Quicktime 7.5. It was recorded on a Canon Vixia HV30 camcorder and given to me on a dvd. But when I try to view the .mov file with Quicktime, I can hear the audio but the screen is black. Sometimes, it asks me to continue to the following link:
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=Windows&ctype=696d64 63&csubtype=69636f64
    I'm not that computer savvy - what is wrong? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

    Sorry. My "then" (above) should have been "they".
    They sent you a data DV containing the "source" from the camera and the HDV codec isn't available on your PC so you can't view the file.
    Ask the authors to convert the file using H.264 Video codec (or others) so your Windows version of QuickTime can play the file.

  • Question about opening a file with Quicktime..

    Hello,
    I would like to open some audio files with QuickTime and not iTunes.
    With Panther I used to select ALL the files i needed to modify and then select the default app. for opening them (in this case QuickTime)
    Now that I'm running Tiger when I do that all the INFO of each files opens up and I have to make the change one by one.
    Any idea?
    Many Thanks

    Use Option-Get Info.
    I don't think this changed from Panther to Tiger, however.

    Hmm . . . comes with a Utility MPEG2 Component ML app with no explanation of what it's for?
    The utility app is an "assistant PKG installer." It allows Lion and Mountain Lion users to install the older QT MPEG-2 Playback Component installer PKG file which is not allowed to run on its own under Lion or Mountain Lion since these operating systems already have a QT X only MPEG-2 component embedded in the QT embedded structure. Without this utility you would have to either copy the component from an older system to your Lion or Mountain Lion system, use Pacifist for installation, or manually open the PKG contents and transfer the component to the appropriate component folder.
    As to your "discussion" regarding the playback of AVI file types, there are really only two strategies here:
    1) You can add component support so that QT can play the files natively or
    2) You can convert the file contents to compression formats that are natively compatible with the unmodified QT component configuration.
    Each user should decide for his or her own self which approach best suits their needs for a particular source file. In most cases, conforming the system's codec component configuration to play the source file directly results in higher video quality since no transcoding takes place but this strategy will not work if a codec which is required is not available for the user's operating system. On the other hand, converter utilities tend to support more built-in codecs and are easier to use since the user does not have to concern him or herself with the nature of the particular source compression formats but at the risk of some potential loss in visual quality. As to what converter to use, once again this is a matter of personal choice. In the case of commercial converters like iSkysoft, the codecs are built in while MPEG Streamclip accesses the host operating system's QT codec component configuration. I personally prefer the free HandBrake app for AVI, MKV, TS, MTS, and M2TS conversions since it has an exceptionally full-featured X.264 GUI with some user options that 97% of users are likely to never use.

  • Streaming Larges Files with Quicktime

    Hey guys - I am in need of some serious help. I have streamed files with quicktime before, no problem. But now I need to stream about 75 minutes worth of video. How do I do this and keep quality video and sound? I don't mind having a large file as long as it streams. But 1.2 gigabytes is a little ridiculous. I have seen this done with WMV but I am having trouble doing it with quicktime. It's very frustrating because there are so many compression packages and options within those. I would like to finish before I die. Anybody have any ideas?

    Streaming ANY size file is really an issue of bandwidth out of the server. The closer the server is to a backbone and the better the connection to the backbone, the better feed you have.
    Everybody sing!
    The backbone connected to the T-1,
    The T-1 connected...
