Filesharing with pismo

I posted this elsewhere, but this has been a very successful place for my questions to get answered, so here goes.
I have thre macs at home that I want to file share:
1) G3 B&W 10.3.7 ethernet to wireless router
2) G3 Pismo 10.3.8 airport wireless
3) G5 imac 10.4.6 airport wireless
Computers 1 and 3 share just fine.
Computer 1 and 3 show computer 2 in network window, but when I try to connect i get the message on computer 3 - " Unknown user, incorrect password or login is disabled. Please retype the name and password or contact the server's administrator" and on computer number 1 - "Sorry, the password you entered is incorrect. Please re-enter it."
Ut-Oh...I am the server's administrator. DOwH!
Computer 2 also shows the other two in the network window, but I get the incorrect password message when I try to connect to either. Now, you would assume all this means I don't know the password...but I only set up one password when setting up the systems on all these computers and it is the same for all. Also...just to see if the password on computer 2 is correct, I just installled some software and the password worked fine.
I don't think I have any other passwords set up and checked in keychain access to see if there were any there - just my email and safari auto passwords were shown. I have NOT set up a master password in the security settings.
Can anyone explain to me how to fix this situation? Is this a Pismo problem? Additionally - both computer 1 and 2 have OS 9.2.2 on them, but not activated. Personal File Sharing, Apple Remote Desktop and Printer Sharing are enabled on all three. Firewall is off on all three. What am I missing here?
Thanks for any advice. I have been at this for a day and a half checking the settings on all three computers and as far as I can see everything is identical. Is reinstalling my pismo system my only option? And will that work?
Sarah

I thought about that too, because the long user names were the same on the two that connected to each other, and different on the Pismo, and the computer names and the short user names were each different on all three, but that wasn't it.
Someone in the other forum suggested creating a new admin account on the pismo and so I did, but after restarting I discovered that all the settings and prefs were set new, and especially troubling was the itunes and ipod were set up as a new user so I bagged that.
Admin was they key that helped solve the problem though.
The admin account suggestion prompted me to check my permissions and ownership for each of the hard drives on each computer. Seems the default setting was "system" as owner on the pismo. Once I set the owner as the admin user - me - then I was able to mount all three computers on each other just fine, and all files are accessible on all three.
Life is good today.
Thanks for your suggestion.

  • Can I have multiple PCs set up with iTunes to Fileshare with one iPad?

I want to have several PCs with iTunes installed, which can be used with any iPad so that we can use Fileshare to upload documents from a shared netwrok folder to the iPad.
For example - Bob passes his iPad to Jane (a Support Officer) - who uses her PC with iTunes/ Filesharing to load some documents to the iPad.
Bob goes to a conference, has access to the documents, and in some cases marks them up (using, eg PDF Expert).
When Bob gets back to the office, Jane is busy so he gets Paul (another Support Officer) to use his PC to save the marked-up docs from his iPad back to the Shared network folder and upload some other documents for a different meeting.
    Is this feasible?
Does each iTunes application installed on a single PC become aligned/ associated/ attached (whatever) with only certain devices?
Can a single device be used with any iTunes applications on any PC?
And how do Apple IDs fit in with this?
Is there a clear and concise explanation of what you can actually do with Apple devices and iTunes anywhere on the internet?

I'd suggest you consider a cloud-based file sharing service such as Dropbox for this sort of use. iOS is not designed to be synched with more than one iTunes library at a time, so attempting to use it as you describe, connecting a single iPad to multiple computers, almost certainly won't work as you intend and is likely to cause nothing but headaches.

  • Aironet 350 with pismo antenna?

Hi people. I recently bought a cisco aironet 350 pccard wireless adapter for my pbg3 500. It works, i use os x 10.3.5. The problem is it doesnt reach very far. Last week a friend of mine came with his macbook and he had full signal at places where I could not even connect.
Doing some research I found that removing the fat sticker placed on the part of the card that remains outside the powerbook, there are 2 antennas and a jack for an external one. So I tought I could use the one built-in the display that is meant for airport cards. The problem is they can not be conected directly (the cable doesnt reach and the conectors are different anyway. To make thinks worse, the powerbook cable doesnt even have the conector, just the wire. I tried making a bridge between this cable and the cisco jack (using a 15 cm cable) but doesnt improve the signal, so I think im doing something wrong, or the pismo antenna is no better than whats built into the cisco card. Maybe someone here has some experience on using a non airport card with the airport antenna.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks Brent. I have a spare ibook display that I can use for testing the antena. Problem is I dont want to burn the pccard amplifier. I dont know how the antena works, or if there is already an amplifier in the display, so if I connect the output of the card to the airport antena, I may burn the card. If I touch the antena lead it has power, as well as the pc card, so I dont think they can be connected toghether.
Also another doubt I have is actually how the antenna works. If I check the jack with a tester, I can see that the shield and the conductor of the wire arent isolated from each other, so then how do you wire them to the card when they are bridged already?
Sorry, hope I explain myself a bit at least, my english is not good enough I think for this kind of things.
    Thanks again.

  • AFP filesharing with a XP on a 2nd Hard Drive

I can do a filesharing from a Win XP.
After mapping drive from XP, I can only access to files under that ID, such /Users/user1.
How to access the 2nd drive on the Mac, which is /Volumes/Maxtor 120G drive?

You have to enter that path when you map the drive.

  • Cannot use Western Digital HDD with Pismo?

    Good evening,
I am trying to use a Western Digital Passport 250GB external HDD USB with my Pismo, but it mounts the HDD, but says it is unreadable and then forwards me to the Disk Utility. It seems the HDD but I can't partition it or anything. So, I partitioned it on my G4 iMac, on which it works perfectly, and then removed it and tried to use it on the Pismo; again, no luck! Is this a fool's errand or am I doing something wrong? Please advise as I need more than the 20GB internal HDD.

    spcmiller,
I am sorry the suggestion did not work but underpowered USB ports on Mac portables is an issue with external USB HDs. You have something else going on which I cannot answer.
I would suggest posting in the Powerbook G4 (15-inch Titanium):
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=129
The Titanium also has USB 1.1 ports, has issues with USB HDs, and the forum has more activity than the Older Powerbook Computers. Also, if you wish, perform a search in the Titanium forum for 'USB western digital' for many posts. I saw none that matched your experience. When you post, I would explain that you have a Pismo and were sent to this forum for the reasons I mentioned; you can even link to this thread if you wish.
Sorry I could not solve your issue.

  • Is iSight compatible with Pismo PB?

Will iSight work with my Pismo Powerbook?
    Thanks!
Pismo Powerbook, 512MB Ram   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

iSight is a Firewire device. If your Pismo has a Firewire port, it will work to do at least some things. However, the complete answer will depend upon your computer's processor type and speed and Firewire capability, what you want to do with iSight, and what software you want to use to accomplish that task. Giving us that information will let us give you better help.
For instance, the table in the lower left corner of Apple's iSight product page shows the requirements for iChat AV with iSight. However, even if you Pismo is a G3 with a slower than 600 mHz processor, if you meet the other requirements, you can still use iChat AV (although it will be slow.) A third party app called iChatUSBCam can work around Apple's minimum processor speed.
You have many other software choices, too. Some Applications You Can Use With iSight. System requirements vary among applications, so check their links or help systems for more info on the ones you want to use.

  • Weird startup with pismo

I usually put the pismo into sleep mode when I am not using it. In any event, I shut it down for the first time in a long time. When I tried to start it up today, it wouldn't start. I had to press the start button a few times before it finally started. At one point, I heard a long beep when I kept my finger on the startup button. I didn't hear the bong sound (even though the sound level was up). At first, I tried booting without the power chord. When that didn't happen, I tried it with the power yo yo adapter. After a second attempt (or maybe a third) with the adapter it finally booted up.
Is something on the way out? I am not sure if I am going to shut it down completely for a while but is there something that I should be aware up in the sense of replacement in the future.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    macuser84:
Try resetting the PRAM (from a cold start, hold down Command + Option + P + R while you hit the Power button. Allow to chime for 3 to 5 times, then release and allow to boot.
Also, you should boot from your install disk holding down the "C" key, go to the Installer Menu, open Disk Utility and run Repair Disk. If DU reports errors, run Repair again, and again, until no errors are reported. If DU reports errors it cannot fix you will need to run Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
    Hope this is helpful.
    Good luck.

  • Strange problem with pismo...

I recently purchased a Pismo Powerbook G3 and when I turn it own without it being plugged in it takes me to a gray screen, and if that wasn't enough, after about five minutes of work it says I need to restart and then won't turn on after I restart by holding down the power button.
    HELP ME PLEASE!!!!!

OK, so you still haven't told us how much free space you have on these partitions just so we can eliminate that.
I had a friend with a 60Gb drive in his DA recently that had 1.5Gb left free that was having all sorts of problems until we deleted some files by burning them to a DVD.
Next " Me ejecting it improperly isn't the issue " .If you do eject it improperly then this may be the cause of your problems , pure and simple.
I run a Pismo, Lombard and Wallstreet on OSX and I use five or six USB sticks of various sizes on all three without any problems.
I can drag 2Gb files to and from them all to the biggest 4Gb stick without any of them locking up.
If it was just one USB stick that was causing this problem i would say just reformat it but the fact that they all do it suggests something else in your methodology.
    1) Try the second USB port.
    2) Reset pram.
    3) Check that the USB sticks are all backward compatible with USB1 - they may not be getting enough power to run properly.
    4) Try an external USB powered drive to see if this problem is replicated .
    5) Reformat one stick and then use it by dragging a few files to it and remove it " properly " just to humour me. .

  • Lion OSX File Vault and filesharing with unencrypted users/computers

How does File Vault 2 work in the following Use-Case?
User A, has full disk encryption through File Vault enabled on a MacBook Air.
User A has an Microsoft Excel file that has been stored in his/her Documents Folder on their encrypted drive.
User A wants to share this file with User B so that User B can finish entering data and adding some calculations.
User B is a Windows 7 PC with no disk encryption.
User A drops this file on a WIndows file server that both User A and User B has access to.
This file server is not an encrypted system.
Will the act of User A dropping the file on the file server automatically unencrypt the file so the User B can open the Excel file and work with it?

The files don't get passed as an encrypted object. They get passed as files. The encryption/decryption works at a level that is transparent to just about everything, includingthe file system.
So, no, the file is not encrypted when you drop it onto a file server.

  • TC Fileshare with windows xp not working

I am trying to get the TC to show up as a fileshare for windows machines. I was told its capable of it. Can someone help.
    Regards

Try adding the workgroup that your Windows machine is a part of in AirPort Utility. Enter Manual Setup > Disks > File Sharing, and you should see a workgroup field. Then you need to add your Time Capsule's IP address to the list of trusted networks/zones on any software firewalls you have installed. The default IP is 10.0.1.1 Your TC's HDD should appear in My Network Places. If that doesn't work, you can install AirPort Utility for Windows which comes on the TC's CD. It includes AirPort Base Station Agent, which mounts in your taskbar and allows you to connect to your Time Capsule's HDD.

  • Filesharing with Windows over Airport Express

Hi, I have a windows xp network that is set up as follows
cable modem -> Linksys BEFSR41 rougter -> Airport
the linksys goes off to a few computers and the airport express, now the networks is working beautifuly for internet access, but i am stuck when trying to get my notebook computer (which connects to the airport and accesses the net fine) to connect to one of the computers (connected through the Linksys) and do some windows file sharing
Has anyone had any experiance with trying to set something like this up before? any help would be very greatfuly recieved.
Right now I am thinking that the problem is having to do with something about how the linksys's ip range is in the 192.168.x.x while the airport is 10.1.0.x and how windows isnt agreeing with that kinda configuration to share, or something along those lines, Im totally lost
    thanks for any help

You just need to set up the AX as a bridge...
To set up the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) as a bridge, using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, make these settings:
    Network tab
    - Distribute IP addresses (unchecked)
    - Apply the new setting.

  • FileSharing with jpg rendering in browser

After looking through and testing the FileManager API I do not see a way to allow for one user to upload a file (JPG) and allow for that file to be viewed in the peer's browser. It appears that peer would ONLY have the ability to download the file to the desktop.
I am wondering if there is a way to render the file in the client for all to view upon upload completion. The intent is to use in collaboration with the WhiteBoard and allow for one person to upload and draw on top of the uploaded image for both users to see. The actual file would not need to be stored on the peer's desktop.
    Is this a possibility?
    thank you.

    Hi There,
You should be able to use the fileDescriptor and get the full URL of the
jpg. From there, just load it up in a loader (the regular one in the Flash
    Player API).

  • Problems Filesharing With Ubuntu & NFS

I've been trying to connect my MB to my roommates Linux PC running Ubuntu 7.1 in order to be able to stream media and share files.
-We are against the idea of using samba to do it; it just doesnt make sense to enable "windows" file sharing on 2 OS with a Unix past.
-FTP access works great except there is difficulty w/ streaming media.
-The third option is NFS, but neither of us have been able to figure out the method of connecting to his shared folders.
    In samba its easy:
    command+K "smb://192.168.123.102/home/downloads" - +prompted for UN & PW.+
However with nfs there is no such luck
    command+K "nfs://192.168.123.102/home/downloads"
    - "+could not connect to the server because the username or password is not correct.+"
    Any Ideas?

My guess is that the Linux NFS server is requiring the client to use reserved ports (<1024). MacOSX doesn't use reserved ports by default. The "-o resvport" mount option must be specified, but even then only "root" is allowed to bind to reserved ports, so only mounts being performed by "root" will succeed when using that option. Mounts performed by a normal user (like those done via the Finder's ConnectToServer... menu) will never be able to bind to a reserve port. In that case, your only hope of getting it to work is to configure the Linux NFS server so that it doesn't require NFS clients to use reserved ports. This can be done with the "insecure" Linux NFS export option.

  • Trouble viewing online video with Pismo

I am having trouble viewing video online. But not all video. For instance, I can view clips on YouTube without a problem, but clips that play on CNN.com or NBC.com (i.e.) stutter and do not flow smoothly.
Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a solution?

If you have not installed Flip4Mac, a free upgrade to support .wmv formats, you should do so.
That is a well know problem. It is caused by the processor-intensive decoding required by some video formats.
The solution is to upgrade your PowerBook to a newer old Mac with a G4 or better that includes faster and more advanced numeric processing.
If your videos appear in a player with controls, waiting for the download to complete before allowing the movie to play improves the situation. In QuickTime Player, you can "step" through ALL the frames as fast as possible (but with no sound) by using the right-arrow key. This will show you what you missed when it jumped frames to keep up.

  • What DVD writers will work with Pismo?

A list would be nice- my original drive just died. Drives that would fit in the expansion bay as well as external Firewire drives. Bonus points for not needing any new software or tweaking. Any successes out there? I didn't find any at accelerateyourmac.
