/ Filesystem is read only

after installing and regular booting i get a lot of errors, basically stating, that the filesystem is read-only.
after login in as root, nothing works (e.g. dhcpcd complains about the ro fs aswell).
my fstab is clean, except some cd entries. there is NO swap or / given at all.
i would fill it in myself, but it is, of course, read only aswell
any suggestions?
btw the root partition should be an ext3

Boot the install cd, mount /dev/sda3 under /mnt, and edit /mnt/etc/fstab.  If you just want a bootable system, put "/dev/sda3 / ext3 defaults 0 1" in fstab.  You may (or may not) want to switch to UUID notation afterward.

  • Filesystem goes read-only

    Hi, all
Yesterday, OVM Server3.1.1 was crashed. due to ovspoolfs.img was corrupted. I recovered ovspoolfs.img.(but OVM Manager didn't recognize that server.)
Main problem is that Filesystem goes read-only. I checked out /var/log/messages. but There are no disk errors or I/O erros.
Does anyone know what could be causing this problem or any solutions?
    Thank you for your help.

Thanks for all these great tips!
As R00KIE pointed out I don't have a good backup system. I think I will go to my computer shop next monday to fix some good backup drive, because this quite scared me actually.
As for now I acted as follows:
Reboot, try to remount /srv and /opt [they are on the same disk].
Result: Bulks of errors. Lots of "soft resetting link" and "link to slow".
Another reboot, which kicked me in single user mode. I was had to remount / and was able to alter /etc/fstab, so that /srv and /opt were not mounted by default.
    Shutdown system, open the casing.
Clean internals with vacuum cleaner. Unplug all harddisk cables and plug them back again.
Fire up the system. Mount /srv.
Try to make backup of important data on /srv.
This seemed to work, and there are no errors anymore. Probably some cable was loose, somehow. But I still do not really trust the situation, and will fix some backup routine.
Thanks again for all the tips and tricks. I will definitely run some extra checks and utilities from now on!
    jocom
    P. S.: Running "e2fsck -f -y -v" on both /srv and /opt says everything is fine. No errors, no bad blocks.

  • Kinit mounts root filesystem as read only [HELP][solved]

    hello
I've being messing around with my mkinitcpio trying to optimize my boot speed, i removed some of the hooks at the beginning i couldn't boot, but then now i can boot but the root filesystem mounts as read only, i tried everything my fstab looks fine, / exists with defaults i tried to mount it referencing by it's uuid or by it's name and i get the same results, it mounts the filesystem as root only all the time no mather what i do.
There is not logs since i started playing with mkinitcpio, or anything i searched everywhere in this forum and around the internet, and i can't find any solution that would work, i restored all the hooks and modules on mkinitcpio and the result it's still the same. i also changed the menu.lst in grub to vga=773 but that's about it.
Can anyone help with this please i can't seem to boot properly.
    Regards

    Hello
Basically what happens it's that it loads all the uDev events then the loopback, it mounts the root read only, then when it checks filesystems it says
    /dev/sda4: clean, 205184/481440 files, 1139604/1920356 blocks [fail]
    ************FILESYSTEM CHECK FAILED****************
    * Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root *
    * file system is currently mounted read-only. To remount *
    * it read-write: mount -n -o remount,rw / *
    * When you exit the maintenance shell the will *
    * reboot automatically. *
Now what bugs me its that i can do that mount -n -o remount,rw / with no problems and when i do
    e2fsck -f /dev/sda4
it doesn't return any errors just says that 0.9 non continuous.
none of this makes sense to me!! thats why i though that the problem could be coming from mkinitcpio or something
    any ideas
Thanks for your help, btw thanks for the quick reply
    Regards

  • Resuming from pm-suspend puts my EXT4 filesystem into Read Only mode

As the title says, I'm having some issues with pm-suspend. A little info on my computer:
I'm running x86 Arch Linux on a Toshiba NB500 netbook.
The netbook has no hard drive in it. Arch is installed to an off the shelf USB drive.
As I write this, my install is up to date (just pacman -Syu'd)
    Running kernel 2.6.39-ARCH
    Here's what happens when I run `pm-suspend`
    # pm-suspend

My theory is: The laptop is waking up before the USB drive gets a chance to spin up.
If I'm correct, my idea is to find a way to have pm-utils set a priority on my USB interface in the resume stage so the USB can wake up before Arch continues trying to bring everything else up - Something I have no idea how to do.
    Any thoughts?
EDIT: Spelling. Sorry for the huge log... Figured the quote tags would have a max-height set on them.

    Hello fellow Archers.
Just to check if this issue was resolved as I'm having the same issue in a very similar scenario (I'm using Arch from an SD Card).
My netbook is an Asus 1201n sporting simple Openbox WM (with latest 3.0-ARCH kernel and updates) and I installed acpid, acpi-eeepc-generic package from AUR and laptop-mod-tools and configured as per the 1201NL wiki page and also read the acpid and pm-utils wiki pages.
My logs are pretty similar to OP's.
Let me know if this was already solved and/or if you need additional info to help us troubleshoot this issue.
    Thanks.

  • Filesystem mounts read only during reboot [solved]

    Hi folks,
after shredding my last Arch installation I'm trying to set everything up again using the new released image.
    generating the /etc/fstab file by
    genfstab -p /mnt >> /mnt/etc/fstab
    creates the following code:
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
    # UUID=6c76fc7c-45d9-43e5-8530-7d098a58ca76
    /dev/sdb3 / ext4 rw,relatime,data=ordered 0 1
    # UUID=8ac179e7-b291-440a-839c-0fd476abcf1c
    /dev/sdb2 /boot ext2 rw,relatime 0 2
after rebooting I get the message:
fsck.ext4: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/sdb3
    Possibly non-existent device?
and my file-system is mounted as read-only.
after changing the /etc/fstab by gaining rw-access using "mount -o remount,rw /" to
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information
    # <file system> <dir> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
    tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nodev,nosuid 0 0
I once again get the file-system mounted as read-only. I would appreciate your suggestions on how to get rw-Access each reboot.
    LG UnRoot

I'm sorry for that confusion, I copied the partition table by hand and mixed that up. It is always /dev/sdb.
Edit: just corrected that in the first post
    You are right

  • My MBP won't boot; verbose mode gets stuck at "filesystem is read-only". What do I do?

About a day ago I plugged an SD card into the slot and the OS froze (I'm guessing due to corrupted files). Since then, the computer either takes 10-15 minutes to boot and then freezes on my first app launch, or doesn't boot at all.
I am doing my high school media exams and I need FCP to work right away. This situation is very frustating, can anyone help me? Would Disk Utility First Aid through Target Disk mode help? Should I just use another computer? I have two days to get my stuff done, and I need every minute of my time.
    Thanks in advance!
    Aron

OK, now the optical drive is just spitting out the OSX install disk and making weird noises. I think it's dead.
Also, the computer doesn't show up as a FW drive when I connect it to another Macbook and boot it into Target Disk mode.
Can someone tell me what's going on with my computer? This is seriously freaking me out.

  • Filesystem read only after kernel compilation

    Hello,
I builded my own kernel so I shouldn't need an initrd.  After a lot trial and error I finally have a booting kernel.  Funny thing is, that my root filesystem is read only.
When I boot from the standard arch kernel, everything is fine.
I thought it was because I have data=writeback in my fstab, but it isn't.
Does somebody have an idea?  My filesystem is ext4.
the only error message that is usefull, I think is something about /etc/sysinitrc line 301 /etc/mtab: mount read only.
    regards,
    Roel

it's odd, but i think it needs the initrd to mount the root properly. in my case, without an initrd, the root being ext4, is mounted ext3.

  • Filesystem read only at boot "SOLVED"

    Hi archers
I have a frustrating problem.... for some unknown reason... I rebooted today, and havn't been able

Few days, or maybe a week ago, when i was trying to get X to work, i always had to use the computer's reset button because the keyboard would be irresponsive. Normally Arch would fix itself and re-reboot, but eventually it broke because of whatever reason. I thought of wiping the partition and reinstalling Arch from scratch as i didn't have many things on it anyway, but guess what, GParted could fix the filesystem.
(By the way, in case you're curious, the reason X wasn't working properly was that i had no keyboard or mouse drivers installed.)
If you have another Linux on your PC, or a Live CD, or even an installation CD, see if it has a disk-partitioning tool that has an option to fix filesystems. If it doesn't, but if the Linux you use is installed on your PC, just install GParted. But if you're using an installation- or Live CD, you can't do that, and in that case i think you'll have to get another Linux; i would say download Puppy Linux and make a Live CD of that; it has GParted and is friendly for newcomers in every other way too. And you can be sure that having a Live CD lying around is always something good. You never know when something like this will happen again.
(Oh, i just realized that you already ARE using a Live CD... Keep installation CDs, and Puppy Linux, in mind though.)

  • [SOLVED] More rsync problems after restore... Read only filesystem?

Yesterday I backed up all of my data with rsync to a USB thumb drive. Surprisingly it all fit, but my intentions were to wipe my disk and create a new partition scheme for a dualboot while still being able to continue where I left off with arch. So after backing up with the script from the arch wiki titled full system restore with rsync, I followed the rest of that page, and modified the fstab on the backup on the USB and reconfigured grub and restarted my computer and I was able to boot into the USB. Then, I decided that it would be easier to just use the live cd to repartition and pacstrap the base system and generated an fstab. Next, I chrooted from the livecd environment into the newly built base and installed rsync. I then mounted my USB to /mnt in the chrooted environment and used
    rsync -aAXv /mnt/ARCH_BACKUP/* / --exclude={/mnt/ARCH_BACKUP/etc/fstab,/mnt/ARCH_BACKUP/boot/grub/}
I just did this since I figured that all of the directories excluded in the script wouldn't really have to be excluded here since they were already empty. Everything seemed to run smoothly except for one file(or maybe directory?) called /etc/resolv.conf.t.jbnW2 which kept giving an error. I figured the file was unique to the USB or something and continued to reinstall grub and then reboot. The weird thing is that everything was back on my system, but it didn't automatically boot into a display manager which it's set up to do. Then when trying to manually start x, that wouldn't work. Then I tried to connect to wifi, it recognized my network but wouldn't connect, so I tried sudo su, which worked but returned an error that the var file system was read only. I then tried to use rsync again thinking maybe that directory would transfer now that I wasn't in the chrooted environment. But instead, it was trying to restore every single file, but every one returned the error "filesystem is read only".
It seems like when I restored all of the files in my entire system were made read only.
Can anyone tell me what may have caused this and how to fix it?
I think it may either be that when I mounted the device in the chrooted environment I didn't specify 'rw' capabilities, or it may be that when I backed up I didn't specify 'rw' capabilities I just opened the file manager and clicked on it and it automagically mounted to /media/.

Ok, well I fiixed it. I had edited the fstab on the usb to be able to boot into the usb, and, while I edited it again on the hdd each time I restored from the backup, I didn't realize that the top entry /dev/sda1 (which is my root partition) was on a line that was commented out.  I guess I accidentally hit the backspace button or something while editing it to be able to boot into the usb.
Also, I think there was a second problem, that my usb controller is starting to fail. Because on the last time that I backed up, if I moved my computer or anything I would get a I/O error. This was caused by the failing usb controller. The computer would remount it as read-only because of the failure. The solution to this was to use
    hdparm -r0 /dev/sdxy
Note: The device must be unmounted.
Where x is the device and y is the partition number, for me this was sdb1.
    Then mount specifying read-write option.
    mount -o rw /dev/sdxy /media/<BACKUP>
    I also tried
    mount -o remount,rw /dev/sdxy /media/<BACKUP>
as was recommended on all of the sites that I could find, but this command kept returning an error.
Note: For newer users, Arch does not automatically create the media folder as it doesn't provide automatic mounting of external drives. If such is the case, and you haven't installed a desktop environment with a file manager that will automatically do this for you when the device is recognized, you must make the media directory and the directory which you intend to mount to manually.
    # mkdir /media
    # mkdir /media/<BACKUP>
Where <BACKUP> can be whatever you want it to be.

  • Install on SDCard/USB stick, toggle read-only filesystem - possible?

This is something I thought about while installing Arch on an SD card earlier. You know these small switches on some SD cards that make them read-only, right?
Would it be possible to have a setup where Archlinux is installed on a rewritable storage device like an USB Stick or an SD card, where one mode of operation would be to use it like a regular, persisting Arch install (with writeable filesystem). The second mode would be to use it similar to a Live CD, not persisting any data on the storage device and using RAM instead (mounting the root filesystem as read-only).
Basically, you could boot into regular mode (perhaps by choosing a seperate entry in GRUB), change configurations, update packages, etc. Then you reboot into read-only mode and use it as a Live CD with any changes to the filesystem stored only in RAM. This could be combined with system encryption to provide a secure and portable Arch installation that can be kept up-to date and simply by rebooting, you have a protected, volatile environment similar to a Live CD.
Is something like that possible? Has it been done already?

Comment on the "why" for Flash Device....quiet operation, less power required, faster performance and reduced size.
Faster boot time is also possible with raid applied.
As previously stated, running all in ram doesn't provide any performance improvement if the system has at least 2GB of ram.  Thus the use of swap is not required with that much ram.
This principle also applies to Flash Devices which have algortithms controlling the writes across the entire card capacity such that larger capacity increases lifetime expectancy.
Copy- on- write is also proposed for flash devices which reduces the process steps for writing to flash.
In my experience with running-in-ram with CTKArch "live" system, I found not much to endorse using that mode.  A negative of good proportion is the copy-to-ram loading time , which cannot be avoided.
Basically, faster ram is the best approach for performance enhancement in all systems.
Thus, there are herein some reasons for using flash in an arch booting system whether "live" or conventional or raid based.
My raid0 bootable system was outlined in previous post and am using it now.  It is not a USB connected bus arrangement which inherently limits performance.
I find Compact Flash in UDMA or true IDE mode to provide good performance speed of 90mb/s read and 25mb/s write to be a fine alternative to hard drives.  In raid0 read speed is doubled.  Good reason for flash devices but not in usb mode.

  • Read only error after instalation

I was using the Arch 0.7 beta2 build for a while and everything was, more or less, fine, I finally decited to update to 0.7 and now after I install I get a buch or "filesystem is read-only" errors and then it frezes when starting hotplug,  I love Arch, the philosophy is what I have been looking for, I hope someone can help,  Even Gentoo can't muster the speed!

you can start with disable hotplug,
you should also use udev instead if devfs, just edit your menu.lst(devfs=nomount) and your fstab to static naming scheme, (/dev/hdx),
if that not help it could be some form of apm/acpi trouble, there are afew kernel parameters you could try as a workaround for that, can't remeber them in my head right now but i think a popular one is "noapic",

  • [SOLVED]root partition read only after update systemd

After update systemd today, the systemd-remount-fs.service fail to start. Root filesystem is read only I tried add rw to fstab mount option, but the root parition is still  read only. I noticed that util-linux package are installed and udev package is dropped , Does it related to my problem?
    Please advice me.
    Sorry for my bad English.

After downgard util-linux package, the system work again
    Update 2
UUID in grub.conf and fstab  are inconsistent, Thanks to  tomegun for point out this problem.

  • Repository files downloaded as READ ONLY

    Hi,
We are using the repository for SCM of file based non-Oracle applications. When I download files from a folder in the repository they occur on the filesystem as Read-Only.
How can I prevent/control this? After download I want the files to be without any OS attributes (like Archive or Read-only).
    Serverside: Windows NT 4.0, Ora817, Repos6iR4 version 6.5.52.2.0
    Clientside: Windows NT 4.0
    TIA

    David,
Of course the files are checked in; otherwise I wouldn't be able to create a configuration on them and base a workarea on the configuration in order to download the files.
Here's my problem: I check-in and out files while developing a release. A release for me is a set of (checked-in) objects and folders grouped in a checked-in configuration.
Once I'm finished I want to download the release. In order to do this I base a 'DOWNLOAD' workarea on the configuration that represents the release.
Then I download the DOWNLOAD workarea; and have all files in the release on my file system. But I do not want them to be READ-ONLY !!, since the folders and files that make up my application have to be moved and copied around a couple of servers using FTP scripts and this is a whole lot more complicated when the files and folders are read-only.
If this cannot be disabled than Oracle SCM is a lot less attractive for our way of doing SCM... although I have been able to adjust all my Java FTP classes so that write-access is enabled on all file and folders after download and before publishing the application to all servers.
By the way I use the Java API of Oracle SCM to download the contents of the DOWNLOAD workarea.

  • SCSI Disc Read-Only

    hi
i have Arch linux installed on my SCSI disc (Seagate Cheetah 18GB)
    my controler is
    Adaptec AHA-2940U/UW / AHA-39xx / AIC-7895 (rev 04)
working on kernel 2.6.15-ARCH (from 0.7.1 installation CD)
    with default initrd ....
    sometimes i get error like
(scsi0:A:0:0): Unexpected busfree in Data-out phase
    SEQADDR == 0x7d
sd 0:0:0:0: SCSI error: return code = 0x10000
    end_request: I/O error, dev sda, sector 664214
Buffer I/O error on device sda3, logical block 6718
lost page write due to I/O error on sda3
and my filesystem goes read-only ... after reset everything goes back to normal ... how i can prevent going read-only on "/" and restarting my linux ?

well disabling one of modules doesn't help
i created my own initrd with
    HOSTCONTROLLER_SCSI: aic7xxx sd_mod
and only this module is loadedfor my scsi controller
    but i still get error
after error i restarted my computer and runned
    Drive Verify
in SCSI Controller Setup (Ctrl-A at start up) and and drive was veryfied without  any error so i guess that isn't my drive problem
maybe will help that after this error my linux doesn't hang-up .. just FS goes readonly .. i still can read every file on disc .. just cannot write to them
... after restart everything is ok for about 2-3 days ....
    please help ..

  • Read only filesystem problem

    Hi,
I have a strange problem. After some time of running archlinux the root filesystem suddenly becomes read-only. It happened 3 times yet. I'm using LVM and the root volume is /dev/mapper/VG0-archlinux2 and filesystem type is reiserfs.
If i tried to remount it read-write using command

I've same problem with an asus laptop, with one hdd. On the device I've some partitions (home, root, backup, var) but this error appears with 'home' only. Sometimes the mount options turns into "read-only", but only on home-partition (ext4, but root, var and a download-directory is ext4 too but they works well).
I found this: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p1052099 - I hope this helps for me - and for you too
