Filesystem V/s raw disk
Hi all,
I have a RAC, with OS solaris 9 and Oracle 9i installed.I want to transfer raw disk from one sun server to filesystem on solaris 9 to another server on the same cluster.
How should i Proceed?
mirroring or dd is the way to go

How to create Shared RAW disk on solaris 10?
Hi,
I have built two solaris machine using VMware. I am going to configuare RAC. how to create shared RAW disk for ocr, votedisk and asm?
OS version = 5.10 32 bit
Thanksuse openfiler ( software based SAN) if do not have shared disk storage system, this is an appliance kinda software can behave as SAN storage, it can be installed on VM as a guest machine and rest configuration remain same as storage and your RAC deployment.
http://www.openfiler.com/community/download
alternativly you can follow below method

Hence, i cannot stamp two 10GB RAW disks for creating an ASM diskgroup while installing grid infrastructure 11g R2 on Windows 7 x64.
Hope you can help me resolve this problem! :)The underlying error is an operating system error - as indicated by the +"(OS 18) There are no more files"+ and +"(OS 1) Incorrect function"+ error messages.
Have you looked at obvious issues like device permissions, ACLs and so on? Have you looked at o/s documentation for detailed descriptions of these o/s error codes?
And have you asked yourself why Windows and not Linux? ;-) -
Hi Friends!
I installed windows 8.1 on one partition of my laptop which had windows 7 in another partition. Post installation my windows 7 is not showing in boot options and all partitions except the one having windows 8.1 are now showing as raw disk. My data on other
2 partitions is not visible or lost because of this? Can any body help with a sure-shot solution please...Hi Ashutosh,
What's the meaning of the "raw disk"?
When you sign in the Windows 8.1, can you access other partition under its Windows Explorer? Any content in these drive?
Meanwhile, I suggest you disable "fast startup" setting for test:
1. Control Panel -> Power Options
2. Select Choose what the power button does on left hand side.
3. Click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.
4. Uncheck Turn on fast startup under shutdown settings.
5. Click on the Save changes button.

Ocr/voting RAW Disk sequence number change
Dear Gurus,
We are planning to upgrade IBM AIX 5.3 OS technology level upgrade ... and also we are changing the device driver from rdac to sddpcm .
If we do this activity these are the possible changes may occur.......
According to IBM there could be a possibility of RHDISK number , MAJOR and MINOR number changes LIKE /dev/rhdisk0 to /dev/rhdisk1 in this case
Whether this RHDISK number , MAJOR and MINOR number changes will cause any issues on Oracle RAC database particularly on OCR and VOTING disks........
for example currently our OCR LOCATION IS IN : Device/File Name : /dev/rhdisk23 this may change to /dev/rhdisk<25>
Please help mee...
Regards,
Vamsi...Dear Gurus,
From OCR and VOTING point of view :
currently we have OCR LOCATION :
/dev/rhdisk23------------->Might change to /dev/rhdisk29
currently we have VOTING LOCATION :
/dev/rhdisk24-------------->Might change to /dev/rhdisk30
In this case how oracle will trace new OCR/VOTING raw disk path........How we have to make oracle to understand OCR/VOTING LOCATION is in “/dev/rhdisk29 , /dev/rhdisk30”.....when cluster starts it will go and look in /dev/rhdisk23 for OCR and /dev/rhdisk24 for VOTING .Since it was not there it will fail .
Without OCR/VOTING disk CLUSTER will not start .....
OCR/VOTING disks are safe in "/dev/rhdisk29 , /dev/rhdisk30".......
Even if we take backup of OCR/VOTING disk .....no need to import it in "/dev/rhdisk29 , /dev/rhdisk30".......because OCR/VOTING content was safe...only disk number changes........
In this Scenario
What are the exact commands and steps we need to follow.........Please help me ...
Regards,
Vamsi.... -
How to determine raw disks configured for OCR/voting disk, ASM spfile
I have a two-node Oracle 10gR2 RAC configuration using raw disks. Basically, raw disks are used for CRS's OCR/voting disks, ASM's ASM spfile and disk groups.
Is there a better way to figure out what raw disks are configured in Oracle using methods other than those shown below:
- To find out votedisk:
# crsctl query css votedisk
0. 0 /dev/ora_crs_vote1
1. 0 /dev/ora_crs_vote2
2. 0 /dev/ora_crs_vote3
- To find out OCR:
# ocrcheck
Status of Oracle Cluster Registry is as follows :
Version : 2
Total space (kbytes) : 525836
Used space (kbytes) : 3856
Available space (kbytes) : 521980
ID : 1603037329
Device/File Name : /dev/ora_ocr_file1
Device/File integrity check succeeded
Device/File Name : /dev/ora_ocr_file2
Device/File integrity check succeeded
Cluster registry integrity check succeeded
- Is there a way to figure out what disk device is used for ASM spfile?
- To find out raw disks configured for disk groups:
while connected to the ASM instance in sqlplus:
SQL> select name,path from v$asm_disk where name like 'DG%';
NAME
PATH
DG_DC_ASM_0000
/dev/rhdiskpower13

Create tablespace syntax for raw disk on Solaris
Hi!
I want to create a tablespace over /dev/rdsk/c1t1d1s5
I tried with
svrmgrl>create tablespace rawtb datafile '/dev/rdsk/c1t1d1s5' reuse;
Is this the proper way of creating tablespace over a raw disk?
Can one specify a "filename" to this raw device (w/o a symbolic link creation) for example "rawtb.dbf" ?hi
u just create a symbolic link using ln command. use that in the create tablespace command.directly u can't do that by specifying the raw device name.

ORA-00314 - Restoring from Cold Backup. ( Redologs on Raw Disk startup)
Greetings,
We're running Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.1.0 - 64bit Production ( Solaris Sparc )
we've recently switched to redologs on raw disks to improve DB write performance. Have taken a cold backup of db , But db denies to open normally after restoration.
Any ideas what could be wrong? and how to fix this?

Add/Remove Raw disk to a Solaris 11 Container
Hi All,
What is the process or commands used to add or remove raw disks to a Solaris 11 containers.
I need to present the raw disks to containers so that Oracle ASM can be used on the containers. I have added the raw disks but not able to delete the extra disk. Can somebody help on this. Thanks in Advance.I've not tried this with disk (only with tapes and that years ago on Solaris 10) but I think you need something add something like the following to your zone's configuration using zonecfg.
add device
set match=/dev/rdsk/<a pattern which matches the disks you want to import>
end
See the Solaris 11 zonecfg manual page (example 8 applies).
Again - I've not tried this so I can't swear that it will work. -
Using ASM without raw disks?
I realize the whole point of employing ASM in an enterprise environment would be to alleviate the need for third-party LVMs and data management at the OS level.
Still, I wonder if there is a way around the raw disk requirement for using ASM-- not in a production environment, but for the purpose of getting aquainted with its benefits and intricacies, and running through its procedures without impacting a live enviromnent (and to save the time and expense of additional hardware installation.
I have read about an "undocumented" ASM parameter called ASM_ALLOW_ONLY_RAW_DISKS, which, when set to FALSE, would allow me to do what I need to do without additional disks:
http://www.orafaq.com/parms/parm50.htm
http://www.dbazine.com/OLC/still.shtml
Unfortunately (but not surprisingly), this hasn't worked for me thus far. Has anyone had any luck with this parameter in a WinXP environment?
Any ideas on what might work toward reaching this end would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
JohnHi John,
I was able to get ASM working without raw disks on Windows 2000 as follows:
create init+ASM.ora for example:
*.background_dump_dest='F:\oracle\product\10.1.0\admin\+ASM\bdump'
*.core_dump_dest='F:\oracle\product\10.1.0\admin\+ASM\cdump'
instance_type=asm
*.large_pool_size=12M
*.remote_login_passwordfile='SHARED'
*.user_dump_dest='F:\oracle\product\10.1.0\admin\+ASM\udump'
*._ASM_ALLOW_ONLY_RAW_DISKS=false
*.asm_diskstring='f:\asm\*'
The setting of asm_diskstring is very important, this should be set to the directory where you are going to create the "ASM files" that will pretend to be disks.
The asmtool which is on the Oracle 10g CRS CD, can be used to create empty files, for example:
ASMTOOL -create \\.\F:\ASM\ASMDISK1.ASM 100
ASMTOOL -create \\.\F:\ASM\ASMDISK2.ASM 100
ASMTOOL -create \\.\F:\ASM\ASMDISK3.ASM 100
This will create 3 100Mb files in f:\asm\ which with should be picked up in v$asm_disk once you asm instance is restarted.
obviously you will need to change the drive letter above, as required.
Also looks like you need the OracleCSService running, which I think can be started using ocssd.
cheers,

Query to find the the free space in raw disks
I am new to ASM.
What is the query to find the free space in the raw disks in ASM diskgroup.? Can i get space info about individual raw disks in the disk group?
Is there an ip address for the ASM disk group? If so how can i find it?below query will give you total and free space for each raw disk from a disk group.
select dg.name, d.name, d.total_mb, d.free_mb from v$asm_disk d, v$asm_diskgroup dg where dg.group_number=d.group_number order by 1;
There no IP address attached to ASM disk group. Why do you want associate IP address with a Disk group? -

RDSK.TOTAL_MB

Hi all
first - thanks H.V for an amazing utility!
Sorry if I am doubling on this but i tried searching for anyone with the same issue....
it seems that running vdbench on server 2008R2 raw disk ( no partition at all ) i cannot access it via \\.\physicaldiskX where x is the number
u can only create partition , not format it and access \\.\Z: where z is the drive letter assigned
I am following H.V.'s advice :
https://blogs.oracle.com/henk/entry/vdbench_and_raw_write_i
and i actually want to access a no file system disk.
why the need for creating a partition ?
thanks
Isaacwell, silly of me, i did not save the error messages.
i just tried to replicate the error and it did not appear. ( i.e. it works )
i CAN say though that when i tried using the older version (5.0.2 with the gui ) it said no raw devices found. ( still does )
i am running in a virtual machine attached a test disk to it, and just could not run..
same commands hold now ( even with the older version ) as long as i don't use the gui ( which i wanted for tutorial purpose)
so in a way problem fixed ( as you do not support the GUI , and i can run it now )
i gotta admit though it does bother me because i did not do anything different ( BTW when trying to recreate the issue , i completely remove the disk from the VM , and created a new one ( just because i though a delay in updating the OS might have something to do with it - but nope.)
is there any append log i can dig the error ? ( if it is of any interest )
thanks

Is there any way of programmatically finding out what raw disks are attached to a system, then writing a list in the form CxTxDx to a text file?
Either by scripting or a "C" function calls would be fineAlternatively how can I find out whether a given disk in the form CxTxDx exists?
(Again I need to do this programmatically - I'm trying to create a list of raw disks that I can then use to run prtvtoc for each disk on the system)
