FileToArray or readline to read a file and show the information in a textbox

CVI I am a beginner and have some basic questions.
Currently I am using CVI 2009th
I want to open a file and transform it into another format. The most important information to be displayed on the GUI.
For text output, I use the textbox.
With readline everything has worked, but for my data rows rather is impractical.
That's why I tried the same with FileToArray. But the array does not display in the text box.
I just do not know exactly how the textbox works. Does the textbox made a formfeed after a certain number of characters? Or I can write text in succession away?
 Here are a few lines from my code.
// FileToArray  FileToArray (pathname, &fcsLine, VAL_CHAR, fcsfile_numberofelements, 1, VAL_GROUPS_TOGETHER, VAL_GROUPS_AS_ROWS, VAL_ASCII);
// What is the right way to diplay text with filetoarray?
SetCtrlVal (tabPanelINFO, TABINFO_FCS_VERSION, fcsLine);
InsertTextBoxLine(tabPanelFCS, TABFCS_FCSBOX, -1, fcsLine);  // ReadLine while (ReadLine (fcsfile_open, fcsLine, fcsfile_numberofelements) >= 0)
{ InsertTextBoxLine(tabPanelFCS, TABFCS_FCSBOX, -1, fcsLine); }

Ok, so you are dealing with bynary data to read from the file. First of all, the post you linked refers to FileToArray () function, an I/O function which opens a file, reads its content in memory and closes it. It is basically different from ReadLine or ScanFile functions: ArrayToFile is useful to read files with numeric data only, which is not your case.
On the other hand, ReadLine actually reads file content into a string, without splitting it into data fields. On the data you have posted, ReadLine will read the entire field into a single string, since inside the data no linefeed is present. It will be up to you to extract from the string the values you need. It is possibly not the best approach...
Another option can be to read directly from binary format into memory, defining an appropriate datatype to read in file content. I don't know FDS file format (which of them is? ) so I made a rough trial to describe the data structure: knowing the exact data format you will be able to define the appropriate structure; the result will be something like that:
typedef struct {
   char   type[3];
   char   version[7];
   char   n1[32][8];
   char   header[95];
   char   data[291];
 }  fds_format;
fds_format s;
fH = fopen ("c:\\FCS file.fcs", "rb");
fread ((char *)&s, sizeof(fds_format), 1, fH);
fclose (fH);
My attempt correctly scans all (hypothetic ) fields in text section, doing nothing in the binary section which is simply read int 'data' field.
I understand that this is not so simple to understand: I will be glad to clarify your doubts if any.

  • Reading a file and parsing the data for a calculation method

    i am trying to read a file with 3 feilds double double and int . am able to read the file but i am getting an exception right befor i parse the data ...code

              double interest = Double.parseDouble(data[1]);
              int term = Integer.parseInt(data[2]);
              System.out.println(loan+interest+term);
    afterwards i would like to break this up into three methods to feed the values to a calculation class

    Take a look at your while loop. It continues to loop as long as mLine != null. Therefore it stops looping when mLine IS = null. So can you now see why the following line of code would cause problems?
    String []data = mLine.split("\t");How is the data stored in your file? Is it a single line with the three values separated by a tab? If so you can do away with the while loop and just call readLine() once. Otherwise you will have to process each line you read inside the while loop.
    P.S. use the code button when posting code. There is a button above the textfield when use post a reply.

  • How do I read from a file and store the information in an array?

    Here is my problem:
    I am going to have to use a bufferedReader to read a file containing information on 10 vehicles. And after I read that file I want to store the info in Vehicle [] V.
    Where should I start?
    Thanks
    Steve

    Thank you for the quick response.
    As of right now our code is the same. Now I have to "parse" the information. What exactly do you mean?
    My code is as follows:
    while((str = br.readLine()) != null)
    String[] tokenArray = str.split(" ");
    for(int i = 0; i < tokenArray.length; i++)
    System.out.print(" Token: " + tokenArray);
    System.out.println("\n");
    Is that what you mean by parsing?
    I am not quite sure what e slpit(" ") is doing. Is there a better way?
    And just to make sure I am understanding my own code, I am storing the information from the br in tokenArray. Followed by a series of print statements which output the info.Correct?
    Thanks again,
    Steve

  • How can I dynamically read a file and show/plot the data in the GUI?

    Hi, everyone,
    I hope to implement a VI with the following function:
    Usually, when we "read a file" in VI and then show the data in the Waveform Chart or other display GUI, the VI will first read and record all of the data from the file and then show them simultaneously. Now, I want to implement a VI, which could read  the data from a file and display it in a time series. That is, I can define a "sampling rate" or "reading rate", like 100 data points / second,  then the data points could be correspondingly shown in Waveform Chart one by one as the time moves on. The key purpose is to simulate a real-time data collection module using an existing file.
    I don't know how to implement this function. Any suggestion and solution are really appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Zhanpeng

    Heres the same effect, just a different approach :
    The code in the red box was used to create data that you would be getting from a file.
    What you could do is (shown above) :
    - Read all of the data
    - Index only one value at a time, and set the 'sampling rate' using a wait in a while loop.
    - Build an array using this value, which will simulate collecting data in real time.
    - I used an array of the iterations as X-values, because they coincidentally correspond to # seconds in my example
    - I then bundled the time array (xvalues) with the values from your file (yvalues)
    - Send that bundle to an XY graph
    That should work, though you could implement some different logic for different sampling rates.
    Let me know if you need a hand with that.

    how can i read the contents of this textfile and put the data into an ArrayList called ArrayList<Customer> customerList.
    i knew that i need two classes, one for CustomerDetails and one for ReadFile.
    i have already done the customer class as:

        String Name;
        int CustomerNo;
        String Postcode;
        String teleNo;

         return allDetails;
    }i just wondering how can i code the ReadFile class?
    can anyone help me please. thank you in advance.

    thank you for your suggestion, but i have already started to code the readCustomer class using the Scanner.
    the code i got so far is:
    import java.util.Scanner;
    import java.io.*;
    public class readCustomer
        public static void main(String[] args)
         readCustomer("Customers.txt");

              processLine(scanner.next());
             scanner.close();
         } catch (FileNotFoundException e) {
             e.printStackTrace();
        public static void processLine(String line)
         Scanner scanner2 = new Scanner(line);
         scanner2.useDelimiter("\\s*:\\s*");
         String description = scanner2.next();

  • Write and read txt files and catch the exceptions

    hey everyone, im in a bit of a bind. im trying to set up this try catch statement. here is what i have for code so far.
    import java.util.Scanner;
    import java.io.*;
    public class Warning
        //   Reads student data (name, semester hours, quality points) from a
        //   text file, computes the GPA, then writes data to another file
        //   if the student is placed on academic warning.
        public static void main (String[] args)
         int creditHrs;         // number of semester hours earned
         double qualityPts;     // number of quality points earned
         double gpa;            // grade point (quality point) average
         String line, name, inputName = "students.dat";
         String outputName = "warning.dat";
         try
              Scanner FileScan1 = new Scanner (new File("students.dat"));
              // Set up scanner to input file
              // Set up the output file stream
              // Print a header to the output file
              outFile.println ();
              outFile.println ("Students on Academic Warning");
              outFile.println ();
              // Process the input file, one token at a time
              while (FileScan1.hasNext())//there is another line...
                  {               // Get the credit hours and quality points and
                   // determine if the student is on warning. If so,
                   // write the student data to the output file.
              // Close output file
         catch (FileNotFoundException exception)
              System.out.println ("The file " + inputName + " was not found.");
         catch (IOException exception)
              System.out.println (exception);
         catch (NumberFormatException e)
              System.out.println ("Format error in input file: " + e);
    }I am pretty sure the layout is good to go, but first and foremost that try statement is hanging me up. Could someone give me some suggestions about how i should set this up.
    i want to read in this students.dat file, then output another file called warning.dat.
    Thanks i really appreicate the help.

    no, i was really hoping to just see if the way it is
    set up it will be doable, that way i wouldn't be
    working on code that was impossiable to sort through
    properlyFair enough.
    One thing I'd suggest is that if you're really basically only going to be printing the exceptions, and since that is the top-level method (main) --
    I'd instead just add some "throws" clauses to main, get rid of the try/catch stuff, and just let the VM handle the exceptions for you. It will print them, just like you're doing, except that it will also print the stack traces, which you are not doing.
    If you're going to handle exceptions, it's better to actually do something about them rather than just print them - otherwise you might just as well let the runtime do that for you.

       Please check the [link|Convert ABAP List to PDF and display without downloading first; (Rich's reply) and get the spool similarly.

  • I would like to read a file and display the results in a table containing both strings and numbers?

    Hi,
    I just need a simple way of doing this as at the moment, i read one line at the time containing strings and numbers, whenever i convert this line to an array i loose the strings, if i want to display it, it displays as a group of lines while i would like to display it as a table with column headers. The file is an .xls worksheet.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Me

    Hi,
    Look at attach vi.
    If this is not what you need please clarify.
    With ActiveX you can Open Excel, interact with it (read and write values to cells...
    But if you can read it this way, I think it's easier.
    Hope this helps,
    Paulo

  • Reading a file, and counting how many e's there's in it!

    Hello everyone!
    Well, I'm trying to write a program that'll read a file and count the number of e's in there and print it out.
    This is what the Index.txt file contains:
    In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
    A stately pleasure-dome decree:
    Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
    Through caverns measureless to man
    Down to a sunless sea.And this is my source code:
    import java.io.*;
    public class Appearance{
        public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException{
         index = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(("Index.txt")));
            while((letter = index.readLine()) != null){
       if(letter.contains("e")){
           eCount++;
      System.out.print(eCount + "\n");
      if(index != null){
          index.close();
       index = null;
    private static BufferedReader index = null;
    private static String letter = null;
    private static int eCount = 0;
    }But for some reason when I run it, the output is 4?.. Please tell me why, as I figured that this should work.. :O.
