FileVault 2 and disk speed tests

A curious thing. I have had FileVault 2 enabled on my MacBook Air (late 2010) and have been running regular disk speed tests using Blackmagic.
This week I bought a new 2GHz Air with 256GB disk and ran Blackmagic, which showed impressive 453/404 MB/s speeds. All well and good. Then I switched on FileVault 2 and decided to repeat the test to see if there was any speed degredation as a result of the encryption. Now I get an error message that the Air's disk is "read only" and Blacmagic cannot run. If I had had problems on the old Air I would have assumed FV2 was the culprit. Anyone have an idea what is behind this?

Hi, thanks. BlackMagic is in the Apple App Store. Strange thing is, I could test the speed of the SSD on the 2010 Air while FileVault 2 was switched on. I presumed, therefore, that it was compatible with FV.

  • Yosemite and Blackmagic Speed Test

Hi all, on rMBP 15" with 1tb pci-e, after upgrade to Yosemite and after a clean install, my test on Blackmagic Speed test is around 480 mb/s in writing and 970 mb/s in reading.
With Mavericks my test was around 980/1000 mb/s in writing and the 900mb/s in reading.
Someone can test PCI-E drive on macbook pro retina 15" late 2013 ???
    Thanks

FileVault was the problem... after yosemite install file vault take around 1 hour to complete process. Now is again ok.

  • High latency and poor speed tests lately

For the past 4-5 days, I've been working with various Verizon techs to resolve a high latency/slow Internet problem.  Their ultimate solution was that they have no idea why it's doing this, and since I can reach a few websites at full speed and their line tests show I'm operating at full provisioning, it's not their problem.  "We can't control traffic outside of our networks."  Well, my results are also showing problems with the Verizon servers, so I would think they should be more concerned.  Most websites, however, exhibit the problem.  So I'm stuck, looking for a better answer than "go away."  Maybe some of you are experiencing a similar problem with latency or sporadic speeds?
My provisioning is 20M/5M.  I'm in the L.A. area. (In the traceroutes below, I masked Hop 2 for privacy.)
I've experienced this problem with 2 computers (1 desktop, 1 laptop), both using Ethernet ports; one test using wireless on the laptop.  I've plugged the router directly into the ONT coax to eliminate my house wiring as the culprit.  Westell 9100EM router.
A few websites seem okay, and speedtest.net results always show provisioning at full speed to the L.A. server, but the problem persists when using the non-L.A. server.  With speakeasy.net, even the L.A. server exhibits the problem.  The latency gets worse as the night goes on, sometimes over 1000ms for some traceroute hops.  In the morning, it seems to be back to normal.
    Thanks for any help....

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

MisterJefferson, your problem looks to be with hop #3. That is a Verizon router just after the gateway router for you. This will need to be addressed by a Verizon Network technician. Your hops to your router and your hop to the gateway look fine. Verizon will need to reboot that second router or re-route your hops.
Chernabog, yours is more difficult, you dont have any obvious big issue. However you do have a moderate jump at hop number 8. this is off the verizon network and is out on the internet. on one of the ATT routers. Unlikely you are going to be able to do anything about this. And as it is off the Verizon network, there would be nothing verizon could do about it either. Usually though, if it is a router needing rebooting, it will generally self correct after a few days. Or you could be unlucky enough to be going through a system that is overloaded or just plain old. This can be frustraiting. I myself play a lot of online games and if the server is in Washington DC (I'm in California) one of the hops I have to go through is in kentucky with sprintlink and their routers constantly give me a 500ms ping and I havent been able to get it corrected in over 4 years. Something we sometimes have to live with when it is out of our control.

  • AEB and disk speed

I just got an AEB last week, really was looking forward to the disk capabilities.
Hooked up a printer, and a drive to the AEB, printer works fine, but the drive is GLACIALLY slow.
I know there have been reports of slow speeds when using wireless and the drives, and that even using the LAN port it will drop down in speed. But my performance is less than 500k/sec consistently.
I tried copying a set of backup files (approx 50gb) and the estimate was 45 hours to complete. I disconnected the drive and connected it directly to my 20" iMac, and it took about 15 minutes.
I have the latest update of 10.4.9, and the only thing I could think of was that maybe it's a problem with the hub maybe.
Can anyone recommend a good Mac friendly hub to use?
    Thanks

Well, I've given up using the Airport Express Basestation and having a drive connected to it. It's pretty much useless with the slow speeds you get.

  • Journaling and Disk Speed

How much speed penalty do you take for having Journaling turned on for your main hard disk?

Not a great deal but there is some reduction in speed. If you work with large files and data access speed is critical to your needs, then you may see a slight benefit from disabling journaling. The trade-off is crash recovery. Journaling helps improve recovery from crashes caused by power outages or sudden shutdowns.
Here are two (slightly old) articles that explain about journaling:

  • How to increase disk read and write speed after installing new SSD (2009 Macbook Pro)? Why not as fast as advertised?

    Hi everyone,
I just installed a Crucial MX10512 GB SSD into my 2009 Macbook Pro. It's definitely much faster, but the read and write disk speed is around 200 Mb/s for both versus the 300-500 Mb/s that the SSD advertised. Any ideas as to why? And is there anything I can do to make it faster? Before I installed it, it was between 80-90 Mb/s.
    Specs:
    - currently have about 460 of 511 GB of storage available
    - am using 2GB of memory
    - running on 10.10.2 Yosemite
    Thanks!

Drew, forgive me for being so computer-incompetent but how would I boot from another OS? And finally, what kind of resources would it be using that would be slowing down my SSD?
Sorry for all the questions - I'm not a Macbook wiz by any means!
You could make a clone of your internal OS onto an external disk. Hopefully you already have a backup of some form
A clone is a full copy, so you can boot from it. It makes a good backup as well as being useful to test things like this.
Carbon Copy Cloner will make one or you can use Disk Utility to 'restore' your OS from the internal disk to an external one.
Ideally the external disk is a fast disk with a fast 'interface' like Thunderbolt, Firewire 800 or USB3. USB2 can work, but it is slow & may effect the test.
You connect the clone, hold alt at startup & select the external disk in the 'boot manager'. When the Mac is finished booting run the speed tester.
    Maybe this one…
    https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/blackmagic-disk-speed-test/id425264550
Test the internal & compare to the previous tests
A running OS will do the following on it's boot disk…
Write/ read cache files from running apps
Write/ read memory to disk if memory is running low
Index new files if content is changing or being updated
Copy files for backing up (Time Machine or any other scheduled tasks)
Networking can also trigger read/ write on the disk too.
You may not have much activity that effects a disk speed test, but you can't really be sure unless that disk is not being used for other tasks.
Disk testing is an art & science in itself, see this if you want to get an idea …

Simply knowing that it's about twice the speed would be enough to cheer me up

  • Replacement HD reliability and speed tests

    Hi,
Does anyone know if there has been a review of replacement HDs anywhere?
I want to replace my 60GB drive with a new, bigger one (running out of space) but want to read some reviews about different manufacturers reliability and comparative speed tests before I buy. - I don't want to go in blind and end up with a noisy, slow drive that crashes after 12 months!
I googled it but go nowhere after an hour!
I've read all the threads here about how to do the change and what spec to look for - thanks (very informative)
Thanks very much for your help.

Thanks - that is just the kind of thing I found - stand alone reviews by a shop.
What I am after is a comparison between competing brands - a Kind of Which? review with a 'best buy' in terms of cost per GB vs performance vs reliability. You know the sort of thing - magazines seem to do it all the time.
I know there has been much talk of 5400 vs 7200rpm - I don't need my mac to be running as fast as possible all the time, so i think that the 7200rpm HDs would be unnecessary - more expensive and I wouldn't use the extra performance.
All I need is more space, so a 160GB 5400rpm drive would be ideal I think.
    Thanks

  • SSD Speed Test on MBP 13" Kingston HyperX 120GB

    Whats up guys/gals?
First of all i just picked up my first MBP 13" from the Apple store on 9/11/13
In those few days ive done a few things.
First i removed the HDD and installed my Kingston HyperX 120GB SSD that was previously in my desktop.
I also removed the optical drive, Installed the stock 500GB drive in a Data Doubler.
Its boothing quite fast and its nice to have all this extra storage, however,
on "Disk Speed Test" im only showing 140MB/s write & 410MB/s read.
I have not done anything with system settings after installing this drive. Do i need to enable TRIM? Is it ok to sleep the MBP (close the lid) on the SSD?
The speeds seem a bit slow for a SSD. Is there anything i am missing?
    Here are some photos.

Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test? You could have something like a thermal sensor that isn't working properly and your fan never gets the signal to increase speed.
Hopefully you are under warranty and can get this fixed for free. It would be prudent to find out what's wrong and get it fixed even if you have to pay--it should not be a very expensive repair.
    Good luck!

  • Just 150MB/s write in Blackmagic Disk Speed :(

I've bought Your (new) SSD. I've got Macbook Pro mid-2012. I've did 'clean' install Mac OSX Yosemite (latest system) - installed program Blackmagic Disk Speed test to check SSD speed - read is ok (about 500MB/s) but write speed is slow (about 150MB/s) which is far away from 500MB/s. Thing is - I've installed Windows 8.1 on my Macbook - and everything is ok - got about 500MB/s  read and write. What is wrong with latest Mac OSX Yosemite? Especially even if I did "fresh" install system.

Hello, the speeds you are getting seem to be line SATA 1 so you have to ensure that the hardware of the mac is compatible with the drive and is of course sata 3. also the trim function of the ssd is deactivated on a mac from default so maybe that was the issue with the mac?

  • Flash Drive Speed Test?

RESULTS for the 128G Flash Storage on the 11" MacBook Air:
    Random Read Avg = 96 MB/Sec
    Random Write Avg = 94 MB/Sec
RESULTS for the 256G Flash Storage on the 13" MacBook Air:
    Random Read Avg = 96 MB/Sec
    Random Write Avg = 93 MB/Sec
RESULTS for other drives in a MacBook Pro:
The Seagate Momentus 7200.4 notebook HDD = 17MB/s READ, 22MB/s WRITE
The OWC Mercury Extreme SSD = 149MB/s READ, 139MB/s WRITE
The Apple SSD = 100MB/s READ, 88MB/s WRITE.

  • SSD Speed Test

Hi - I just installed this Samsung 850 Pro 512GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD into my MacBook Pro Mid 2010 (running Maverick-10.9.5) and am getting 256MB/s (write) 268.0MB/s (read), when I should be getting "up to 550 megabytes per second (MB/s) and 520MB/s respectively". TRIM is enabled. Speed tested with Blackmagic design Disk Speed Test utility. Why is the discrepency? What about the following sentence (which I'm not sure I understand) "sequential read and write performance up to 550 megabytes per second (MB/s) and 520MB/s respectively". I'd appreciate a reply. I'm not a techie. Simple instructions would be appreciated. Thank you.

I am going to disappoint you, It cannot be altered to SATA3.  SATA 3 was introduced with the early 2011 MBPs for HDDs and for the HDD and DVD connections with the late 2011 MBPs.
    Ciao.

  • What's the expected hard disk speed for Mac Mini?

Hi all, I just bought my first Mac for use in my personal photo studio, a refurbed 2011 Mac Mini i5 2.5ghz. As I was setting up external drives and putting the mini through its paces, I ran a disk benchmark (BlackMagic Disk Speed Test) and got some pretty poor scores.
My mini's internal drive hits roughly 40MB/s for both sequential read and sequential write. Am I correct in thinking that this is poor performance even for a 5400 rpm drive? The drive is mostly full; there are 50GB free. Would you recommend that I address this with Applecare?
Here are two other Minis (same 5400 rpm drive) hitting much higher marks:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2KOAUAqYiw#t=1m41s
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPksGswN8Uk#t=0m18s

Thanks for the response, Allan. I was preparing to move most of the data to an external RAID setup when I ran that benchmark. It made me think twice about spending several hours setting up the system if in the end the system drive needs replacement.
I'll move some data and see if the speed improves.
ps - One of the torx screws inside the mini case is misaligned. Noticed this when installing new ram. I guess that's making me a bit paranoid that the refurb process didn't go smoothly ;-)

  • Network speed test throughput monitor

I am looking for a quick and dirty speed test to continously monitor the bidirectional throughput of a transponder and POE device while they are undergoing environmental testing.
Would be nice if it could log throughput, dropped packets, and bit error rates between two computers and did not crash when a fault causes one end to stop responding like the C program we have now.
Our C programmer looks at us like we are insane when we ask him to not stop display an errror if the client or server times out.

Yes, I know how to handle and suppress errors in LabView. I was mainly looking for a good example on a network speed test.
The test we have uses was written by one of our software guys, it uses two computers in a client-server arrangement and stops and displays an error message when the client computer loses connection to the server. Regardless of the reasoning I have given the programmer refuses to change it because he wrote the test for him and that's how he wants it.
I want a program that can use one computer with two network cards.
It will send a data stream out one NIC, through the UUT, and back in the other NIC.
Where it Will be checked for errors and dropped packets, and sent back through the UUT.
A continuous throughput speed measurment will also be logged along with errors, dropped packets, and retries.
I have never used any of the LV networking, tcp, etc  VI's and was hoping someone had done this before because I do not have time to start from scratch.
