FileVault 2 and Migration Assistant

Genius at Apple store suggested transfering all my data from my laptop with VF2 turned on (turned it on when I first got it and before putting any data on the SSD) to a new laptop during the set-up prompts when the laptop is first turned on. We did this with a Thunderbolt cable.
But I wasn't able to turn on VF2 on the new laptop until after the set-up was completed.
This means my data was transfered to the new laptop SSD unencrypted. So if I turn on VF2 now, the data was written to the SSD already.
1) What are the chances it could be recovered off the SSD itself if stolen or whatever? I have ALL my password stored in a Secure Note in my Keychain.
I should not have listened. I should have finished the set-up, then turned on VF2 on the new laptop and then only transfer the data over using Migration Assistant. sigh....
2) Also does the Migration Assistant actually clone the drive from the previous machine onto the new one?
Clone is not the right word, I am trying to determine whether it transfers 100% of my contents?
I am asking because I am seeing Max OS X (Mavericks) is reusing most of my settings from my old machine but my printers for instance didn't trasnfer over nor did my settings for the Notification Center. Perhaps that's a bug/ unintended behavior and those should have transfered over also.
Thank you in advance for addressing 1) and 2) for me.

In that situation you would get another machine, connect the encrypted TM disk, restart holding down 'command' and 'r' to get into the recovery disk. You install the OS from the recovery partition, then restore from the encrypted TM so long as you have the FV2 password to unlock the disk.

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

Trying to migrate from Mac-mini Tiger to Mac-mini Lion and Migration Assistant cannot find my Firewire, 400 to 800, "T" disk although it shows up in the new Mac's computer folder. It seems that Mac-mini Tiger is as it should be and the firewire cable is OK.  Something about the Migration Assistant is being missed, but I have no idea what it is.
    Help

Addendum: I read on a post here (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=420169) about removing some kext files in order to trick OSX into thinking that there were no FireWire ports.
I followed the instructions and removed from /System/Library/Extensions/ the following files:
    IOFireWireSerialBusProtocolTransport.kext
    IOFireWireAVC.kext
    IOFireWireFamily.kext
    IOFireWireIP.kext
    IOFireWireSBP2.kext
I restarted and BAM...Snow Leopard booted crazy fast and the mouse and keyboard worked instantly.
The System Profiler says "No FireWire ports were found."
So this tells me that the FW port is probably the culprit and is messing up the installation.
So how do I hack the Mountain Lion installer and tell it to ignore the FW port, which is obviously quite dead? Or is there something I can do to the Base system that is similar?

  • Target Disk Mode and Migration Assistant

Since FireWire has been removed, what are the best alternatives to Target Disk Mode and Migration Assistant?

    1. Put old MacBook's hard drive in external USB enclosure.
    2. Connect to new Mac, and run Migration Assistant.
    3. Migrate just as you would normally.
Speed over USB 2.0 is almost as fast as firewire. An external enclosure will set you back about 15 to 20 bucks.
Seriously, it's not a big deal. I've been doing it this way for years. The only place you have a problem is when the old Mac's drive isn't accessible. In that case, you remove the new MacBook drive, put it in the enclosure, and use SuperDuper to back up your old Mac. You then pop the new MacBook's drive back in the MacBook and re-install OS X, telling it to transfer the old user files into the new installation.

  • New MBP and Migration Assistant

I just ran Migration Assistant on my new MBP bringing over everything from my old iBook. I just noticed that the iLife apps are the same versions from my iBook. Isn't Migration Assistant supposed to account for that, and flag the older apps? Is there anyway I can download and install the iLife apps that came with my MBP?

Thanks for the quick response. I have reinstalled the Application DVD that came with the MBP. The app versions that are loaded are..
    iMovie 5.0.2 (111)
    iPhoto 09 version 8.1 (415)
    GarageBand 09 version 5.1 (398)
    iDVD version 7.0.4 (1116)
    iWeb 09 version 3.0.1 (9B33)
Are these correct? Seems iMovie is wrong. The reason I even discovered this was I went to use the iSight camera with iMovie, but it's not available. I also wonder about iChat, as the version installed is 4.0.8 (619). Doesn't the MBP come with iChat AV ?
    any help appreciated!

  • Why are Setup Assistant and Migration Assistant forcing me to copy everything from an old mac?

    Hi,
I just bought a new Mac Mini (Late 2014, ships with Yosemite) to replace a defunct MacBook Pro (Late 2008, last ran 10.8.5).  I have a local administrative user account and some server and network data that I want to migrate from the latest Time Machine backup of the MacBook Pro to the Mini.  I don't want to copy anything else to the Mini.  Neither Setup Assistant nor Migration Assistant will let me deselect anything though.  All the check boxes are greyed out.  Clicking on them does not uncheck them.  This forces me to copy everything from the Time Machine backup to the Mini.  Then the Mini won't restart.   It won't even boot into safe mode.  It just gets stuck in a reboot-loop until I enter recovery mode, wipe the system drive, and reinstall Yosemite.  Does anyone know why those check boxes are greyed out and how to fix them.  Thanks in advance for any help.

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple's Support and let them deal with it.

  • Please advise - new iMac i7, old iMac G5 PPC, and migration assistant

I just received my new iMac i7 and am getting ready to use Migration Assistant. However, I have some questions:
The logic board on my old machine died, so I pulled out the Hard Drive and put it in an enclosure. This is what I will be using to make the Migration.
My old machine was a PPC, and it was running 10.4.11.
I have read various posts for and against using MA to transfer files and user data between PPC and Intel machines.
I was planning on letting MA transfer everything, and going from there.
Doing it this way, is there really room for MA messing up my new machine?
I have thousands of emails, 80GB of music, 5000 photos, tons of bookmarks, and lots of documents that I'd like to transfer.
I would like NOT to do a manual migration.
    Can I safely use MA?
Thanks for all help and advice!

Users migrates files in your user home folder. This is the folder named as your user account short name and has the house icon if you are logged into that user account. So as long as your user files such as Music files, Word documents, etc. are stored in that user home folder, they will be migrated. If you created a folder structure outside the user home folder for some reason, selecting Users will not migrate those folders (because they are not located in your user home folder).
Applications will migrate things in the Applications folder (minus Apple's apps that are already installed). It probably also transfers application-related files at other locations, based on what Migration Assistant knows about and is scripted to do.
Settings will transfer settings from the old Mac to the new Mac, such as hardware and network settings. This is not user data. Since your old Mac is PowerPC, you should set up your Intel iMac independently.
+Other files and folders...+ will transfer files and folders outside your user home folder that Migration Assistant treats as potentially being or having user data. For example, if you had folder called Stuff at the top level of old Macs hard drive volume, that would get transferred. As long as your user data is stored in your user home folder (the house icon), all this will do is transfer random things you do not need cluttering your new iMac. If you know of something that was not stored in your user home folder that did not get transferred, since your old iMac's hard drive is connected as an external drive, you can just use Finder to locate and copy over that something manually.

  • Links and Migration Assistant from the Time Machine

I have a MacBook Pro with one internal hard disk and two external Firewire hard disks.
The first external hard disk is the Time Machine back up disk.
The second external hard disk is the target for my recovery efforts.
    The is how it went:
    1. Erase the second external hard disk writing zeros to it.
    2. Did a Time Machine volume restore from the first external hard disk to the second.
    3. The Time Machine crashed gloriously within 2 minutes, and 0.7% of the files restored.

The target hard disk is unusable.
    4. Erased the target disk and wrote zeros to it.
    5. Used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy a plain Leopard image.
    6. Used Migration Assistant to get my users, applications, etc. to migrate from Time Machine.
I chose all the options to migrate data and settings.
    7. The reason to use Migration Assistant to get the data from Time Machine was because I suspected that the Time Machine backup might be corrupted. (The volume restore fails every single time.) I was trying to see if Migration Assistant would also crash. My reasoning was that a successful Migration Assistant would not prove anything, a crash would point to corruption in the Time Machine backup.
    8. I booted from my internal hard drive and so far I've found the three weirdness:
    a. A password stored by Safari reverts to an old value.
    b. iTunes shows me the License Agreement to Agree/Disagree.
    c. QuickTimePro registration is blanked out.
    So, the question is:
*Did Migration Assistant modify my internal drive because of links?*
    Roberto Sepulveda

    Stefano,
    1. Boot from the Leopard installation disc by pressing the letter C while doing a restart.
    2. Choose the language.
    3. Click on Utilities on the Menu bar.
    4. Select Restore System from Time Machine.
    5. Select which Time Machine backup is the source for the restore
    6. Select which disk is the target for the restore
    a. Consider that the restore may fail leaving your target volume unusable
    b. Consider that the restore will rename the target volume to the name of the source volume,
so you might end up with duplicate names.
    Hope this helps.

  • IPhoto and Migration Assistant

    Hello,
I'm looking for assistance because the iPhoto library that I moved from my MacBook to my iMac shows up on my iMac but when I try to access the photos I get the following error "Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize." The MacBook had iPhoto 6 on it and the iMac has iPhoto 08 (Version 7.1.2). Any suggestions?
    Thank you

    Curtis:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Others have reported problems with Migration Assistant and iPhoto libraries. Connect the two computers on a LAN, a simple ethernet cable between the two will do, and just copy the library from the MB to the Pictures folder on the iMac. As a precaution you might then download and run BatChmod on the iPhoto Library folder with the settings shown here, putting your administrator login name in the owner section and Staff in the group section. You can either type in the path to the folder or just drag the folder into that field. This is just to make sure the ownership and access is correct before trying to open the library with iPhoto.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Set up and migration assistant can't see time machine back ups

Hi. Trying to cut this short.
I Tried installing osx 10.8. Halfway through the installation it told me I didn't have enough free space. Helpful.
i tried to restore from time machine, the back ups were viewable, but it said i couldn't as the disk was in use or couldn't be un mounted.
Ive now deleted the hard drive and reinstalled 10.7.5.
Set up couldn't restore from time machine back ups as it couldn't find them.
Ive started osx and tried to use migration assistant. It can't see the time machine back ups.
However, if I open the time machine app it can see the back ups.
    I've rebooted in recovery and

Seems my text has vanished. This site is terrible on my iphone. Would expect better.
I've rebooted in recovery and tried to restore from time machine but again it won't find the back ups.
