FileVault 2 Disk Encryption failed

Disk Encryption of a newly bought iomega prestige LPHD-UP3 1.5TB usb 2/3.0 disk on a MacBook Pro with OS X 10.7 (Lion) fails:
When trying to erase the disk with Disk Utility as 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled Encrypted)' the following message pops up all the time:
Disk Encryption failed
Disk Erase failed with the error:
Unable to create boot loader partition due to the specifics of your partition map layout.
The removal of the VirtualCD volume through the Encryption Utility on a Windows PC didn't change anything. Same Failure.

I have a 500 GB Iomega drive with the Virtual CD.  I ran the recently released mac version of the Encryption Utility to remove it.

Since then, after my MacBook Pro wakes of from sleep with the drive attached it cannot connect to the internet, I cannot open any files in any programs, and I cannon eject the drive.  Once I pull the plug, everything is back to normal.  Have you had any similar problems?  Iomega tech support wants to send me a new USB cable...  Useless.

  • My MacBook is stuck on "FileVault Disk Encryption"

    Hello,
So yesterday I decided to upgrade to Yosemite on my 2013 13' MacBook pro 500gb 2.5GHz. And everything went well except when it got to the screen for filevault. Before i got to the filevault stage, everything went well and the computer successfully instaled Yosemite and rebooted. I logged into my icloud when it asked me to, then it went to the screen of the terms of conditions, and I agreed to it. But then it went to the FileVault stage, and I knew a little bit about what it was --to encrypt your data(whole hard drive)-- but I went with it and clicked enable Filevault. So after 30 minutes, it was still the same screen, and I checked afree 3 hours, and the sceeen was still the same. Now, after 15 hours, the screen is still the same. There isn't really anything on the Computer except for Microsoft office applications, and a few word documents. So nothing more than ~110gb of data used. What should I do? Should I turn my computer off?

  • Help, just bought MacBook pro stuck on filevault disk encryption just spinning how do you reboot a Mac?

    Need help rebooting Mac!

Back up all data before proceeding. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Disk Utility.
In the Disk Utility window, select the icon of the startup volume from the list on the left. It will be nested below another disk icon, usually with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar. When prompted, enter the login password of a user authorized to unlock the volume, or the alternate decryption key that was generated when you activated FileVault.
Then, from the menu bar, select
              File ▹ Turn Off Encryption
    Enter the password again.
You can then restart as usual, if the system is working. Decryption will be completed in the background. It may take several hours, and during that time performance will be reduced.
If you can't turn off encryption in Disk Utility because the menu item is grayed out, you'll have to erase the volume and then restore the data from a backup. Select the Erase tab, and then select
              Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    from the Format menu.
You can then quit to be returned to the main Recovery screen. Follow these instructions if you back up with Time Machine. If you use other backup software, follow its developer's instructions.
Don't erase the volume unless you have at least two complete, independent backups. One is not enough to be safe.

  • Bit locker drive encryption failed due to power failer and hard disk corrupted

I ran Bitlocker drive ecryption drive D. My pc is windows 7 ultimate, while it was in progress of 1% due to power failer the encryption failed, when power resume the drive didn't showed the file format nor the size but it shows the size in disk management.
It showed like this in My computer
I do Have the recovery code password and back of recovery password so I ran the "manage-bde-_unlock D:-rp[my code ]
and my pc got hang  no other option rather than to press the restart button.
then I used commang "repair-bde -force D:I:-rp[my rp] and following info showed but it stucked in 1% about 8 hours, and there was no increase in the pecentage
I also connected the hardisk to mac but all othe partation showed but didn't showed the encrypted one.
I had lots of memorable picture and other backups so any one kindly help me to get out of this problem. Thanks for help

    Hi,
The BitLocker encryption and decryption processes can be interrupted by turning the computer off, and it will resume where it left off the next time Windows starts. This is true even if the power is suddenly unavailable.
    Bitlocker-repair (repair-bde)  tool
can't repair a drive that failed during the encryption or decryption process.
In addition, could you please explain a bit for what drive you are trying to deal with? external one?
When you first restart your PC, have you seen any signs that indicate that the encryption is in process?
Regarding your scenario, please take a look to see if the following articles could help here:
Scenario 11: Recovering Data Protected by BitLocker Drive Encryption (Windows 7)
Besides, when running manage-bde command, did we followed the steps mentioned in the below article?
Scenario 14: Using a Data Recovery Agent to Recover BitLocker-Protected Drives (Windows 7)

  • Whole Disk Encryption

I have a T510, Windows 7, 64-bit.  I recently used PGP Desktop 10.1.1 to encrypt the "C:\" partition only using the Windows P/W (in a domain).  After rebooting the PGP login page appeared as expected, accepted the login and would not start the O/S.  Re-imaging the HDD from backup failed to recover the system.  Those of you that are using PGP Desktop could you please share with me the steps/best-practice you are taking to encrypt the HDD?
Also,  Do you still have to decrypt the HDD before performing backup/image of the HDD to be able to recover?
    Thanks,

It's complicated   That vulnerability (which affects a number of encryption technologies) depends on the key being in memory which is used in many cases to prevent the user from having to enter two separate logins when they wake from sleep.  It is possible to configure FileVault in such a way that it's not an issue, but it's less convenient to use.
FileVault has a setting, destroyfvkeyonstandby, which can alleviate this, but be aware that security is ALWAYS a tradoff between "ultimate security" and usability.  In this case, I think the default case is reasonable and the exploit mentioned has too many requirements to be a real concern.
To see all the details on FileVault 2, you can open a terminal window and type 'man fdesetup" and among it is this information on the FileVault key, etc:
On supported hardware, fdesetup allows restart of a FileVault-enabled
system without requiring unlock during the subsequent boot using the
authrestart command. WARNING: FileVault protections are reduced during
authenticated restarts. In particular, fdesetup deliberately stores at
least one additional copy of a permanent FDE (full disk encryption)
unlock key in both system memory and (on supported systems) the System
Management Controller (SMC).  fdesetup must be run as root and itself
prompts for a password to unlock the FileVault root volume.  Use pmset
destroyfvkeyonstandby to prevent saving the key across standby modes.
Once authrestart is authenticated, it launches reboot(8) and, upon suc-
cessful unlock, the unlock key will be removed.  You can also use this as
an option to the enable command if the system supports this feature.  The
supportsauthrestart command will check the system to see if it supports
         this option.

  • Remote restart for a Mac using FileVault 2 encryption?

Does anyone know of a way to perform a remote restart for a Mac using FileVault 2 encryption?  I have some remote Macs for which I'd like to enable full disk encryption with FileVault, but would prefer not to make a physical trip to those machines whenever they need a reboot.  I strongly suspect the answer to this question is "No", without some form of IP KVM, but I figured I'd double-check.  If anyone knows of any reasonably priced Mac-compatible KVMs that would be great too.  Thanks.

    Does anyone have an answer?

  • Need 256 Bit AES Full Disk Encryption for a Mac.  The other discussions regarding this issue are very old.  Does anyone have any current advice regarding encryption software?

Does anyone have any advice regarding 256 bit full disk encryption software for Macs?  The other discussions on the topic are years old, so I would like some current input.  Thanks for your help in advance.

Depending on your Mac, you might not want to upgrade to OS X 10.7 or 10.8 as it will not run the PowerPC based software your currently using costing a bundle to replace it all, also they will slow down your machine if it's not a more recent issue. You don't want to upgrade OS X without AppleCare defending your possibly bricked logicboard that's for sure.
Filevault encrypts the boot drive, however in doing so makes it near impossible to fix if you have a software issue and need to recover files directly or by using specialty software. Also it robs the machine of performance even more than the Lions do. So you will really need a SSD to work best with 10.7/10.8 and Filevault, then it has to be freshly installed. Filevault needs 50% free space on the boot drive, then it's going to write to the slower 50% half of the hard drive where performance is terrible compared to the first 50%.
Also Filevault is cracked under certain conditions, and if someone gets their hands on the machine (like the law) and knows what they are doing.
If you take your Filevaulted machine to Apple to fix, they are going to require the password to fix the machine obviously.
Software based encryption is vulnerable, you might want to instead place your sensitive data on external self-encrypting hardware that doesn't rely upon software or computer hacks/bypasses (ike freezing the RAM) to get to it.
    http://www.datalocker.com/products/datalocker-dl3.html
Iron Keys for portable USB self encryption, both work with any computer, so your not locked into one platform.
With the senstive data off the computer and on a external device, there is the option of removing, hiding and securing the device. If used with a computer that's never connected to the Internet, it's safe from snoopers, except from a survelliance van parked outside your door.

  • Disk Encryption

The company that I work for is requiring that we encrypt our computers. I'm currently running Parallels with XP Pro (all of our software is proprietary and will only run in windoze) so I can run all of our software inside of my superior Mac. The requirements for the encryption are as follow...
    - 256 bit encryption
    - The tool must prevent unauthorized access to the master boot sector, and to the Windows and Novell network logins
    - The tool must provide secure delete functionality for all unused space on the hard drive
    - 100% of all data files (including temporary files, hibernation files and scraps/fragments) must be encrypted by the tool
    - Partial hard drive or file level encryption is not acceptable
Since it requires the entire disk to be encrypted I figure that I can not use File Vault. Does anyone out there know of a program that will cover all of these requirements so the big whigs in our home office are happy? Thanks.

The setup you're describing is just not simple enough to cleanly fit their requirements. If you can find out what they're "really looking for" you can almost certainly satisfy their requirements.
The common solutions for Windows add custom software to the (non-OS) software that boots the machine. Afaik, nothing like this exists that will then continue the boot the machine via Mac OS. So in the end, it comes down to whether or not their policy allows you to bring non-work files (e.g. Mac OS) to work without encrypting them. Here are two hypothetical approaches for if they do allow that or not, respectively:
-Show them Windows running in a virtual machine which has its runtime ram, captured session ram, boot record, and entire virtual drive encrypted in their entirety (via filevault & XP software). Promise them that all work-related files will remain on the 'Windows side'. If you'll allow me a little digression, this option will almost certainly not satisfy them, as I can gather from the requirements that they [are not hipster linux-geeks sitting in a dark server room in the basement, but are likely, rather, operating under management with a foundation of extreme paranoia because of an article someone read somewhere and] have adopted a sweeping "default-deny" policy, i.e. "our way or the highway".
-Move the Mac OS off of the internal drive completely and use BootCamp. Mac OS is just fine booting from an external/pocket FireWire drive that you can, in a very real sense, think of as a separate machine. When they boot your MacBook [Pro] they will see, in every way, an intel notebook running XP and SafeGuard, BitLocker (or whatever other XP, whole-disk-encryption solution your coworkers are using).
    Keep us posted. Good luck.
    Joel
p.s. I haven't actually done any of the above (other than run Mac OS from an external drive so that the internal could have no Mac OS installed at all, just XP --works great).

  • Leopard full disk encryption

Currently I own a Macbook Pro and an iMac, both running Leopard. In particular for my MacBook Pro, I am desperately looking for a full disk encryption product. I know there is FileVault. But it will only encrypt the home directory. All other products will not encrypt the boot partition, so its pretty pointless for a laptop. Another problem is that Time Machine will not work well on FileVault directories.
I looked everywhere, but no luck so far. Given the popularity of Mac laptops, its kind of odd that there is not more around. Soon I won't be able to use my Macbook Pro on the road anymore as our corporate policy is going to require full disk encryption of all laptops soon

I think that you're out of luck at the moment, heres an article that might give some hope for the future.

  • File Vault Disk encryption questions

I want to enable filevault 2. I read that with filevault 2 I no longer need to log out for time machine backups to work hourly. Will I need to enable the encrypt disk feature in time machine in order for my backup to be encrypted also? Or do I just encrypt my whole drive with filevault and let time machine back it up as normal.

You need to enable the encrypt disk feature in TImeMachine if you want your backup also encrypted.  FileVault only encrypts your local drive when you enable it.  TimeMachine backups are completely separate from FileVault.

  • Power failure during full disk encryption

I enabled the full disk encryption and during the encryption process I had a power failure.  Now my mac boots up, asks me for my login and password and then hangs in the apple logo and runs the processor and fans at full power.
I am assuming that it may be finishing the encryption but I have left it on for several hours and it just stays in the same screen.  I am running a 2008 Macbook Pro with a 2.8 dual core processor, 6MB ram and 750GB HD.
Does anyone know if it will eventually come back to life or should I be looking into rebuilding the drive?
    Thank you,
    -Matt

For MisterFlo and others interested I'll elaborate a bit more, it was late when I posted..
The Equium A300 was a Vista SP1 WinRE setup which requires the latest huge WAIK download you've mentioned (which supports Vista SP1 and Server 2008) plus also a Vista SP1 DVD or source files to create the ERD.
For the original Vista RE setups you will need the older WAIK (which is a paltry 800Mb) and likely the previous 2007 Optimization Park for the pre SP1 ERD plus of course a Vista source.
One final tip - don't boot off the HDD to try the repair until all the files are substituted and the permissions for the files you've replaced are fixed and the BCD else it's almost certain you'll get a 0xc000000f error - "the boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible"

  • Using iPod as backup disk for failing drive

I am an avid user of iTunes with multiple years of history behind me, and I have owned my own iPod since about February, and I have never been disappointed until now, but I feel this is more an ID 10.T error than anything else.
I have a big library, so much so that a regular iPod just wouldn't do it, I had to go for the biggest one available. With a library of 5,230 songs covering 31.65GB, I have a nearly irreplacable collection, and to my dismay, my internal disk is failing (thank you Maxtor...)
As a wise move, I synchronised my iPod with iTunes with the latest additions, and was horrified to find that iTunes had sleuthed an entire band (Motorhead! No!), three songs from another band (Jimi Hendrix, why all the good guys?!), and two lone songs had become victim to my series of bad sectors cropping up all over the place. While I was thankful that this had not altered my iPod listings (the tracks are still on the iPod, and are still playable), I am left with a situation.
If I want to recover these tracks, most of which were ripped from now long-lost CDs years ago rather than purchased over iTMS, how would I go about doing it? Obviously, restoring them on the failing disk would be absolutely fruitless, but there will come a time when I CAN afford to replace the disk, and when this time comes, the entire library will need restoring, and as an extra precaution, I want to have the library stored on my partner's PowerBook. Having turned off automatic synchronisation, under the fear that I would lose my tracks, I thought there would then also be a method for transferring all the data FROM the iPod TO a machine, but this does not appear to be possible, and one begins to ponder the usefulness and customer satisfaction of a one-way music player? Is there an option within iTunes I am missing or simply haven't found yet? Or does the problem lie deeper than I believe it to be? How am I supposed to get music off, and re-enable automatic synchronisation without vaporising my irreplacable music collection that already exists on my iPod?
Seriously, it took me many years to rip, and over five hours to transfer, do NOT tell me I'm going to have to vaporise it to do anything with it, as I've already lost a few ultra-rare tracks on the disk...
Any help that could be given is very much appreciated.
    Custom Windows XP Pro

Now that your iPod is set for manual music management, does the iPod show up in Windows like an external drive? Do you see it listed either by name or by the generic "removable disk" under My Computer? Because once Windows recognizes it as a removable drive, you can open it and poke around for your files. First you need to expose hidden files using Windows' Tools•Folder Options•View settings. Then you'll see the folders in which the iPod stores all the stuff.

  • Pavilion G6-1203ey: Hard Disk Test FAILED, but can still boot into Windows

    Hello
I have HP Pavilion G6-1203ey laptop. After installing Windows (7 ultimate, 64 bit) and some drivers on it and after several restarts, it hanged at Windows logo and I had to turn it off with power button. Then after turning it on, it gave me the option to repair problems which are preventing it from starting up, from there I let it to restore the computer to an earlier restore point and after a restart the Windows was working again. After that I decided to do a hard disk check just in case.
The Hard Disk Self Test ended up with a message: Hard Disk 1 Full (305). Then I installed HP Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) Support Environment and did hard disk from there. I chose the comprehensive test from the options, but it finished fairly quickly (in ~1 minute) with the following output:
    Testing Drive: 1
Hard Disk SMART Check : PASSED
Hard Disk Short DST : FAILED
    FAILURE ID : PTTU22-5T774L-MFPV4K-60S003
    PRODUCT ID : A5Q15EA#B1R
    Hard Disk 1
    Hard Disk Test : FAILED
    A bit more background:
The previous owner told me that the original HDD was faulty which is why he replaced it with this one last year. He said that other than that there has been no problems with the laptop. The Windows is working right now and this HDD is quite new so I would not have expected any problems with it, but the results from the previously mentioned tests seem troubling. Is there a reason to worry?
    Thanks

I read your post and looked into the failure ID that you posted regarding the failed Short DST test. That error is indicating a hard disk failure meaning that if it hasn't failed it might soon. If everything is working I would considering backing up your data on a regular basis just to be safe. You could have a local technician take a look at the hard drive to see how close it is to full failure.

  • HT201272 Having a bad day my iTunes library got corrupted and my back up disk has failed how can I restore my purchases from the iTunes store

Having a bad day my iTunes library got corrupted and my back up disk has failed how can I restore my purchases from the iTunes store? When I try it tells me the pruchases have already been downloaded to this computer.

Does your purchased rmusic appears under the Purchased link under Quicklinks on the right-hand side of the iTunes store home page (music can't be re-downloaded in all countries) ? If they do and you don't have the cloud symbol against them so as to re-download them, then do you still have the entries for them in your library i.e. where you would normally click on them to play them ? If you do then try deleting them from there (iTunes will be seeing them and assuming that you still have them somewhere) and they should then get the cloud symbol for re-downloading in the Purchased link.
If you aren't in a country where music can be re-downloaded then you could try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page,
