FileVault 2 Disk Format?

I have a 1.8 GHz Intel Core I7 MacBook Air with 256GB SSD running OS X 10.9.1 (recently re-imaged).  My hard drive has a single partition formatted in Mac OS (Extended Journaled).
When I tried to encrypt the SSD using FileVault, I received the following error message:
FileVault can’t be turned on for the disk “Macintosh HD”.
Some disk formats don’t support the recovery partition required by encryption. To use encryption, reinstall this version of Mac OS X on a reformatted disk.
All help greatly appreciated!!

Thanks, Kappy! Carbon Copy Cloner did the trick. Although you were reserved in your answer (e.g., "you might give this a try"), Carbon Copy Cloner CAN retrospectively create a Recovery HD partition on a volume AS LONG AS YOU HAVE ANOTHER VOLUME WITH A VALID Recovery HD partition. (At least I think this is a limitation.)
Background: I had an external drive with my system and user directories. I wanted to copy that to the internal drive of a new Mac. To do that I used SuperDuper!. However, when I went to FileVault 2 the internal drive, it told me it couldn't, which I realized right away was because the SuperDuper! (a) clobbered the existing Recovery HD partition on the internal drive when SuperDuper! erased that drive and (b) didn't clone a replacement Recovery HD partition from the external drive.
Thanks to your tip, I used Carbon Copy Cloner. I booted up from the external drive, launched Carbon Copy Cloner, went to Window → Disk Center, selected the internal drive and then the Recovery HD tab. I clicked on "Create…" and it worked! (I could then boot up from the internal drive and successfully turn on FileVault 2.)
I never would have guessed that CCC had this capability, so tons of thanks to you for taking the time to post your suggestion.

  • FileVault: cannot enable due to "wrong disk format"

    Hi fellow Mac users,
I just tried to enable FileVault on my iMac 27" but I got an error message (after completing the security questions and hitting "restart") that FileVault cannot be activated because "due to wrong disk format: some disk formats do not support the recovery partion that needs to be created... "
My internal disk however has never been touched by me, it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled) / GUID, so imho everything should be fine.
Do you have any ideas what might be wrong?
    thanks a lot

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • 2nd gen shuffle disk format FAT32 on a mac?

    Guys,
my incredibly stable quad g5 has gone "nuts" since I've had my 2nd gen shuffle. It hangs, won't mount external USB drives if the 2nd gen shuffle is docked during startup, lots of other really weird things.
The shuffle was delivered to my work, so the shuttle was 1st connected to a Windows box, but just to charge it fully.
when the shuffle is connected to the quad, it only actually shows in iTunes about 25% of the time... whether or not it shows up in iTunes, I can see an "iPod" on the USB bus. I've got lots of USB 2.0 powered ports... changing ports doesn't make a difference at all.
according to iTunes, the software version is 1.01, which was updated from the shipping 1.00 while connected to the Windows machine. (this might have been a bad thing to do)
when the shuffle is connected to iTunes, despite the fact that the checkbox allow disk access, most of the time I still see the shuttle mounted as a drive volume. When it doesn't show up, I can still see the drive briefly mount and unmount if I toggle settings or do anything with the shuttle.
obviously, I've tried restore(s) from the quad, which resets the contents of the shuttle but doesn't change the disk format.
the shuttle itself operates as expected, it's only while it's docked to the quad that all heck breaks loose...
    Any ideas???
    Thanks

ah... well, I've already restored one of the times that it was connected to a proper 2.0 powered USB port.
the first time, it wouldn't come back from the reflashed state, ie it didn't reconnect to iTunes...
I disconnected, it had no songs on it, but it seemed to work... after a number of attempts to dock, it finally did, and I pumped a bunch of song over to it and it worked...
I then retried that sequence and the update worked fine.
it's still a strange beast. for example... although no disk access is allowed, it still mounts a shuffle icon onto the desktop, just no folders are visible... strange...
I've chosen to downsample to 128kbit AAC, and I'm not having iTunes autofill the shuffle. I unselected the downsample option and clicked apply. one would think that the data on the shuffle would stay as is. Nope, it wiped the shuffle and tried to put the songs that were there back on the shuffle at the original bitrates, which of course don't fit. Reselect the downsample option, click apply, and it repeats the wipe of the shuffle, and is now (again) downsampling and sending to the shuffle. Since it's on the keyboard USB port right now, this is taking quite a while.
I'll def try on other machines, and indeed without the USB drives mounted, ah, sorry, can't really do that on the quad... the iTunes library is on one of the external USB drives...
anyway, I get what you want me to try... it might be tomorrow before I can repeat the sequence enough times to say something conclusive. This has been going on for a few days already... I've restarted the quad more times since Thursday than I have in the last year!
I'm not panicking yet, but am extremely curious what is causing this problem.
Once again, thanks... I try some more tests and post back

  • Change from case-sensitive disk format to the normal Mac OS Extended.

    Hi,
I need to change from a case-sensitive disk format to the normal Mac OS Extended Journaled version.
I have no external HD fitted, but I do have some DVD-Rs. I need to restore the data from 2 users, including iTunes and iPhoto files.
What's the best way to achieve this?
    Many thanks,
    Tris.

I just got off of the phone with Adobe support. They told me they knew the solution, but that they would not tell me tonight. I had to call back between 6:00 am and 5:00 PM tomorrow. That does not work with my schedule. So I googled some stuff and found that Adobe CS 3 is not supported with Case-Sensitive file systems. So OK, let me install this to my other MAC that has a non case sensitive drive. Same error. Even though I have a non case-sensitive drive, the OS is on a Case-Sensitive Drive and I am never prompted where to install like most all other Mac Software.
I have always formatted case-sensitive. So I am thinking to myself why not start using a non case-sensitive drive. Well, to start off I want it case sensitive. I enjoy web programming and like this feature. Sure it is not needed, but I am glad Apple offered me a choice. And I am sure there are many other reasons why to use it. Also I would be interested in knowing why non case-sensitive drives are supperior.
Why is this a requirement now? I have used Adobe software in the past without this specific issue. I also have Large TB drives and do not know how to 'safely' do this. You will not catch me jumping through this hoop. I will not risk the change to the file system. And I can not be expected to format my drive. I just wonder what Adobe would say tomorrow if I called.
The Direct line I was given by adobe is 800-642-3623 for support on this issue. You don't need anything else but to call this number and ask. You can not get through after hours though.
Wow, I just can't believe this and the lack of interest Adobe had with me.
I hope I can get a refund on the software. Until I am able to downgrade my file system format, I do not want to sit on Adobe's bill. I will buy it again assuming I learn I can't do without PS CS3.

  • Extreme hard disk formats

Is exFat supported for the disk sharing in the airport extreme,
I want to keep the disk format in a readable form for windows and mac, this a external hard drive that i carry with me sometimes for file sharing.
I know Fat32 is supported, But this limits me to copying files to it that can be no larger than 4gig. I don't know if any of the mac formats will be supported in windows.
Basically the question is, what format can i use for disc sharing that is support on both mac and windows when plugged in directly via usb and the airport extreme can support. Also without file size limitations?

Is exFat supported for the disk sharing in the airport extreme
No, exFAT (aka FAT64) formatted HDDs are not supported by the AirPort when connected by USB for file sharing. As you are probably already aware, the AirPort File Server will only work with drives, formatted in: FAT16/FAT32 or HFS+. Note: Regardless of format, the AirPort will use both the SMB & AFP file sharing protocols to share out the drive to Windows, Linux, or OS X clients.
I want to keep the disk format in a readable form for windows and mac, this a external hard drive that i carry with me sometimes for file sharing.
The only option for this would be FAT32. However, the AirPort works best with HFS+ and you can mount HFS+ volumes on Windows with third-party solutions. One example is: Paragon Software's HFS for Windows

    connect target /;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/ora_backup/backupset/%F';

    new RMAN configuration parameters:
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/ora_backup/backupset/%F';

  • Disk format error on restore

I have just started to have problems with my ipod 20g (4th gen) it all started with the ipod taking ages to start playing, it also wouldn't skip to the next track. The folder logo appeared and told me to go to the apple web site, I did what the site told me ie reset the ipod, but now find my computer will recognize the drive but I-tunes wont.
I tried a restore with the updater but this has just come up with a message that said "disk format error"
I can play song's through my ipod still but if I try to skip to another track then it takes ages to play the next track.

    Thanks for all the help.
I have tried disk check and tried to reformat the drive via windows but it just came up with a "disk format error"? Im thinking the drive must be faulty!
Last night my computer and I-Tunes finally recognised the ipod but I couldnt play any of the tracks in I-tunes as it kept bringing up the ! sign?
The ipod let me play songs this morning but in-between the tracks it played about a second of other tracks not on that album??
Its also really unresponsive, and sometimes when I select a song it wont play the song just skip to the next one, then not play that one and skip to the next etc etc
Thanks again for all the help any thoughts would be appreciated
    Cheers

  • Adobe CS2 issue depending on disk format?

I just thought I'd throw this out there:
I installed Leopard and chose to format the disk as 'MacOSX (Journaled)' and then installed Photoshop and Illustrator from CS2 no worries at all.
The other day I reinstalled Leopard and chose to format the disk as 'MacOSX (Case-sensitive, Journaled)' and then tried to install Photoshop and Illustrator again and now it's not working. It refuses to install!
Has anyone else experienced this? I don't see how the disk format would have an impact on this, but it's the only thing that changed in my case.
    Feel free to test it.

I'm not sure if they fixed this in CS3, but it is certainly the case for CS2.

  • Time Machine-Compatible Disk Formats

Time Machine Question - from total Mac NEWB:
I've completed by first Time Machine backup (to Time Capsule). No issues. Next I want to INCLUDE an external USB 3.0 drive to the backup set. This drive is used for archival storage for my Windows Virtual Machine's data files (work stuff, sharing w/PC Laptop). I have this disk formatted as exFat, so no problems reading from Win or Mac.
Complication: Apparently Time Machine does not support exFat formatted drives. I can see the external drive from Time Machine Preferences, but I cannot select it.
What format should I use to simultaneously support: Mac, Win, Time Machine??

Kappy he also has an External USB drive.

But after I reRead his post I see his problem. He is trying to include that USB drive formatted exFAT to the Mac TM backup.
It is saying it doesn't support exFAT drives because it may not be able to write that format when doing a restore.
    To the OP.
Bad Idea to included any external drive to a TM backup system. TM is more for internal drives so if you have a drive failure you can replace the drive and then use the TM backup to restore your system the the last time you may a backup. If you include an external and that external is not connected to the system when doing a restore the restore will fail.
You are better off buying a second external and copying the data from the Mac Win external to that other drive. IE having a second copy of all that data.
Basically the same thing would happen if you tried to use a Windows Backup system to include that external drive.

  • HT202174 In need to change from appleshare to mac os journaled disk format on my time capsule. How to proceed?

In need to change from appleshare to mac os journaled disk format on my time capsule. How to proceed?

No Time Capsule disk can be formatted other than the automatic system in the TC itself.. You simply select erase and it will reformat the drive.
If you are referring to a USB drive.. plugged into a Time Capsule.. you must plug it into your Mac and use Disk Utility.
However you do need to understand.. appleshare is not a disk format.. it is a partition scheme.. so when you pick the disk you need to change its partition to GUID.. this is nothing to do with Mac OS journaled format.. the two are distinctly different. Also Appleshare works fine for most people.. there really is no need to change.
Anyway here is how to do it.
I have sd card I can use as example. Click on the Partition Layout.. so you can choose something else.. notice it is presently set to Master Boot Record.. but is formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled.
When you change the partition layout Options at the bottom will become active and you can change the setting. Click Options.
Choose whichever. GUID is the current system for boot drives.
None of this is relevant to the internal disk of the Time Capsule.

  • Universal Disk Format to iMovie

    Hello,
I put in a DVD which was burned in an iMac and it won't open in iMovie. When looking up the "get info" on the file it says it is in Universal Disk Format. How do I get it into the imovie clip section?
    Thanks

iMovie is for editing uncompressed DV streams, and transferring to iDVD for compression to the standard DVD format of mpeg2.
DVDs do not play or open in iMovie but in the DVD Player.

  • Universal Disk Format (UDF) into FCE4

Does anyone know if you can or how to import Universal Disk Format (UDF) into FCE4

The UDF file system itself is not really relevant.
If you are really asking about converting DVD video for editing in FCE, then you need the following:
MPEG Streamclip and the Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component  (you need both)
Use MPEG Streamclip to convert the DVD video to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.  Then in FCE select an Easy Setup that matches your video and import the converted file(s) into FCE
