FileVault 2 not starting

Question

I have a 4 year old MacPro with a 2TB Hard drive.  I did a clean install of OS 10.7 and then immediately attempted to encrypt the boot drive with FileVault 2.  A Key is generated and then the computer performs a restart like all my other Lion computers.  However, my MacPro will only restart back into the gray screen, never making it to the login screen, forcing me to hold the power button down.  Once it does reboot correctly I log back into the filevault window and it say that filevalut is off.
Is anyone else having problems with FileVault 2 and largers disks?  It there a way to start FileVault 2 from the command line?

HI all,
my suspicion, based upon my recent experience, is that the recovery partition does not exist on your computers.

I just completed this process on a laptop that I had partitioned into two partitions - it worked like a charm with only one minor modification.
rather than shrinking the existing partition by 8GB, I had to shrink it by 12GB. 
otherwise, worked flawlessly, and FileVault 2 is now encrypting my disk.
