FileVault Bug - default application settings
When i activate FileVault, the system resets the 'default application settings', such as default browser, and defaults as to what applications open what file types, after reboot. So when i choose Firefox as my default Webbrowser, after one reboot Safari is the default broswer!
This is very bad for people those want not use Safari or Mail etc...!
Is there any work around?
Check this thread, I have the same problem and I hope the hints here help: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5981050#5981050

Default application settings loses on restart or LaunchServices problem?
Hello,
Problem:
After doing this tutorial:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1428. I have a problem with default application settings (file association). In other words, file function "Open with" is empty. I chose default app for specific file type, do function "change all" (or just start specific application) and everything works fine. Files are associated whit that app. But after restar (or shutdown) every association is reset to none (open whit also empty). FileVault is off.
So after restart I must to associate files whit programs manual, or launch all programs.
What I tried:
Deleting com.apple.LaunchServices.plist - no help
Script run in Terminal: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -seed - works, restores default applications and Open with list (but only till restart)
Onyx app - no help
MAINTENANCE app- works after first restart, after second restart the same problem
RCDefaultApp app- no help
Please any advice?Here is output:
Step1:
none
Step2:

[SOLVED] pcmanfm lost default applications settings for office docs
I'm not sure if it was the Libreoffice recent update or not, but I no longer have any application settings for office documents (ppt, doc, xls, ods, odp, odt, etc.). When I right click to choose an application, none are listed. I tried the suggestion from the wiki to install gnome-menus but the situation was no better after a logout/login.
Even inputting a custom command like:
/usr/bin/soffice --impress %f
does not work. It seems that the "Open with" dialog is completely function-less.
Any suggestions/experience with this?
Last edited by jwhendy (2011-08-09 22:50:41)I fixed this. I just had to figure out the correct mimetypes and re-add them. I still believe this used to be down automatically, but not a big deal. Part of my problem was trying to use xdg-mime to set defaults for "application/ppt" when it's really "application/powerpoint."
I found this list of mimetypes that was really helpful for setting defaults for .doc, .xls, and .ppt.
There are also listings for the correct mimetypes for .odt, .ods, and .odp. In the end, my ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list looks like this:
[Default Applications]
application/pdf=evince.desktop
txt/application=emacs.desktop
tex/application=emacs.desktop
application/powerpoint=libreoffice-impress.desktop
application/msword=libreoffice-writer.desktop
application/excel=libreoffice-calc.desktop
application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.presentation=libreoffice-impress.desktop
application/vnd.oasis.opendocument.spreadsheet=libreoffice-calc.desktop

Bug: "default applications" does not work
I set my internet browser to "opera mobile". nonetheless, everything gets opened in the nokia browser.
What exactly is the benefit of changing the "default applications" then?@BassemN8

Keep losing default application settings
Hello,
I have a recurring, intermittent problem where every few start-ups certain applications lose there default status. For example, upon opening Entourage, I will occasionally get the message asking whether I want to make it my default email application. I have set Entourage as my default email app several times, but this status is lost every once in a while. The same thing happens with Adobe Acrobat for opening PDFs.
This behavior seems random and not associated with crashes or other system problems. This is on a new Aluminum 15" PB running 10.4.3.
Any thoughts? ThanksHi Mark --
Does anyone know if these settings are stored in the Power Management Unit?
The following excerpt is from an Apple Kbase article on resetting the PMU:
The Power Manager is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is usually on the logic board of the PowerBook and iBook. As the name implies, it is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.
Over time, the settings in the Power Manager may become unusable, which can result in operational anomalies with the computer. Examples include not turning on, not waking from sleep, not charging the battery, or not seeing the AC Adapter, among other things.
Doesn't seem like your problem resides in the PMU.

Default Apps Settings Not Staying Set
I have noticed that my default application settings keep resetting themselves each time I reboot. My default browser, mail app, EVERYTHING... without fail. Does anyone have a clue as to what would cause this to happen?
Try resetting the Launch Services database.
It contains that info, and may be corrupt.
Open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, copy the following text in, and press return.
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Frameworks/LaunchServices.fram ework/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
Good luck! -
My default applications keep resetting
For a little while now (but crucially not since I first purchased my MacBook) my default application settings are resetting themselves. I use Adobe for PDFs, Adium for chat and BonEcho (Intel Mac Firefox build) for the web, but I am constantly being asked if I want to set these applications as default when I start them up.
Does anyone know why my system isn't retaining my default application change? More importantly, can anyone think of a way I could fix this once and for all?
I'm reluctant to delete Safari, iChat and Preview as a fix, so if this could be avoided, then all the better.

Bug? Wrong default application
I think I may have found a bug in Tiger related to assigning the correct default application.
Background:
Installed TurboTax Deluxe 2005.
Created a tax return file.
Exited TurboTax.
Double clicked tax return file.
TurboTax Deluxe 2004 is launched and returns an error trying to open the file.
What I have tried:
Performed get info on this year's and last year's returns.
File Type = TaxR; Creator = MIT5 for 2005, MIT4 for 2004
Dumped Launch services database using lsregister.
Everything looked OK, found out that Turbo also uses
an extension of "tax" for the tax return files
Rebuilt Launch services database using lsregister and problem still existed.
Added "tax" extension to 2005 tax return file and correct default application chosen.
Excerpt from Launch Services documentation on how the default application is chosen:
2. If the document has a filename extension (or if one has been specified as a parameter to LSGetApplicationForInfo), find all applications in the Launch Services database that claim to accept documents with that extension.
3. If the document carries a four-character file type (or if one has been specified as a parameter), find all applications that claim to accept files of that type.
4. If more than one application has been found as a result of steps 2–3, apply the following criteria in the order shown:
a. If the document carries a four-character creator signature (or if one has been specified as a parameter), give preference to any application that claims to accept documents with that signature (typically the application to which the signature belongs).
Conclusion:
The correct application is selected when an extension is used, but not when the choice is based on the file type. Therefore, I believe there to be a bug in default application selection base on file type and creator.
Does anyone see anything place I have gone wrong?
I know that when I installed TurboTax last year, it worked, so I'm not sure when this bug was born.
iMac G5 (iSight) Mac OS X (10.4.4)When you went to "Get Info," did you try expanding the "open with" section of the window to view the drop-down menu? This drop-down menu under "open with" should tell you which application is set to open the file by default. In that drop-down menu, you should select the newer version of your tax program. Then under "Use this application to open all documents like this," you should probably click the "Change All" button.
Not sure why the correct application wasn't assigned by OS X in the first place. But I don't know if what you're describing is really a "bug." See if you can set your newer app to be the default application using get info as described. Good luck.

Applications Folder never saves Default Appearance Settings
Dear all,
It seems that my Application folder never saves the default appearance settings. Every time I restart my mac, the application folder is really messed up... It doesn't open in icon mode, the Macintosh, Network and remaining icons appear on the left, and the applications are not indexed by name. Why's that? Any special workaround on this?
Thank you in advance.Open the Terminal in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and run the following:
sudo chmod a+rw /Applications/.DS_Store
Press Enter and type in your administrator password; after logging out and back in, changes made to the folder's icon positions and view settings should stick.

Default application conflict / bug (Pages + TextEdit)
TextEdit is stuck as the default application for for .pages documents. It stays on the default application place above the separator, but Pages (or whatever else I try to set as the actual default application) gets the (default) parenthesis. It's possible to change single documents to actually open in Pages, but not all.
TextEdit gives this error when trying to open .pages documents (for google and stuff):
The document “---“ could not be opened. The file isn’t in the correct format.
The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format.Nah, I've tried that and every variation.
Deleting default applications from TextEdit's info.plist (or even the whole info.plist file) didn't work either. Deleting TextEdit did though. Are the default applications also kept somewhere else? -
Changing file extension default application
Hello, I periodically change my .avi and .mpg movies default "open with" application to VLC, but although the association change in first place, in a few days the default application mysteriously turn back to QuickTime.
Is this a bug or an Apple QuickTime appropriative policy? Anyway, is there any way to change to VLC permanently?
Thanks in advance
iBook Mac OS X (10.4.4)Open one of your .avi or .mpg file's "Get Info" window. Pick a new "Open With" application and click the "Change All" button. Confirm your changes.
From this point on (until you change it again) any time you double-click to open any of these files your chosen app will be used to play the file.
You can temporarily override these settings by Control-clicking on a icon and choosing a different app from the pull down menu. -
Default app settings won't stay.
So none of my default app settings in Lion ever stick! They always reset back to the Apple defaults. And yes, I do the whole 'Get Info' thing, and tell it to apply the desired app to all files like that one. But once I restart, the settings revert. Is this a bug? Some weird permissions issue I need to fix? Yes, I repaired them. Still happens. Anyone? Oh, and I don't upgrade becuase my MacPro is too old. It can't!
Ah, just seeing THIS http://ansonalex.com/troubleshooting/default-applications-reset-upon-mac-os-x-li on-10-7-restart/

Hi
I have TFS server installed and working with other SharePoint farm. (TFS installed, SharePoint extension installed and Granted Access for TFS.
When Setup TFS - SharePoint Web Application Settings, It ask for the three values:
Web Application URL:
Central Administration URL:
Default Location of team project collection sites:
What notice about the TFS sites that are working is that they are Path Based Site Collection. Created with SharePoint Web Application managed path (like
http://spserver/sites/tfs_site1) and so it easy to see it will work.
Web Application URL: http://spserver
CA URL : http://spserver:portnumber
Default Location : Sites or any managed path
We start using Host Name Site Collection (HNSC) to get the benefit of multiple unique site name without having multiple web application for each. Work great but when we tried to setup and extend TFS service on the HNSC, we could
not get them to work and got errors when trying different variation of path URL.
After doing lot of searching on this, I came up pretty empty and I don't know if that is possible so my question is Have anyone able to setup TFS to work with SharePoint 2013 Host Name Site Collection?
If you have, a simple yes will be great but please share or even if anyone think it is possible or not possible, please share too.
Thanks in advance for any comment / suggestion.
SwanlHi Swanl,
I’m afraid that we cannot setup TFS to work with SharePoint 2013 Host Name Site Collection.
Also you can initial a new thread in Visual Studio Team Foundation Server forums:
Team Foundation Server – General: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=tfsgeneral
More experts for Team Foundation Server will assist you, then you will get more information relation to your issue.
For integrating SharePoint 2013 with Team Foundation Server 2013 you can have a look at the following blog:
http://nakedalm.com/integrate-sharepoint-2013-with-team-foundation-server-2013/

How to set my default application...not working
My company has nearly all adobe applications installed from PageMaker 6.5 through InDesign 5.5. We use them all frequently. I'm trying to set my defaults on the Mac Pros and it is not working.
Specs if Needed:
OSX 10.6.8
Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 4
Memory: 6 GB
Boot ROM Version: MP51.007F.B01
+BootCamp dual boot Windows 7
We proof out all files in the version that it comes to us. Our customers are on different versions than the most current, and it's driving us crazy that we can't set the defaults for
each Adobe application. For Instance,
We want for Defaults:
Photoshop = CS4
InDesign = CS4
Illustrator = CS5
etc.
The Finder will not allow us to make the change to open all of a certain file type in the version we want by default. We also use a third party application that allows us to "double
click" InDesign files and open them in the correct version. This saves valuable navigation time and because of the OS's problem with using the correct icons, it also saves us time
dealing with the "Untitled" document when we accidentally convert by opening in the wrong application by mistake. We have gone through Onyx utilities and massive permissions
troubleshooting to no avail. Does anyone know how to set the default for ALL files of a type for Adobe Apps? This has been thoroughly tested and is not working on 10 plus
machines, and only effects Adobe apps.
Any Ideas?I think you miss understand the question. There is a problem with OSX 10.6 and Adobe Apps. 10.5 ok, not sure about 10.7 because of all of the other Adobe problems we downgraded the test machine that we used for the upgrade. There is no way that I have found to make the files “Double-Clickable” through assigning a default application of files with Adobe extensions. We already have an app. that we use and it worked fine until 10.6. I can’t just approve a division-wide purchase of software for a bug that may be solvable by other means (by the way supposed cost of the licensing Soxy is deceiving at $20. Not for us. For companies it’s $20 per platform & also for each time Adobe updates. When we swap out hardware, we have to pay $40 again . Their pricing is absurd). $40 x a couple hundred machines every 18 months or so, uugh! The ten or so I’m working with are just the ones in my immediate department.
I know you have good intentions with your reply and I appreciate it, however I’m looking to solve the problem, not put a band-aid on it. If the problem is by design so Rorohiko can hold companies hostage, then I guess we’ll just have to deal with the few extra clicks it takes to figure out which version we’re in need of, and dragging to the launch bar.
Thanks very much for your reply,

Excel 2010 ignores print server's default color settings.
Excel 2010 ignores print server's default color settings.
Our Setup:
Printers are hosted on Server 2008 R2 Print Server.
Two local printers are created on the print server for each Xerox MFP that we have. Example: Xerox MFP (B&W) - Default settings are set to print black and white only. Xerox MFP
(Color) - Default settings are set to print color. So for every MFP we have two printers are created.
Both variations of the network printers are deployed to the users with the Black and White version being the default. If a user needs to print something in color, they select the Color version of the MFP printer. This
helps us save on color toner costs.
This works great for web applications, Microsoft Word, Adobe Reader, and other applications. But, it doesn't seem to work in Microsoft Excel 2007 or 2010. Whatever the default printer is of the two versions that are deployed,
excel seems to hold onto those printer settings.
Example: If your default printer is Xerox MFP (B&W), when you select Xerox MFP (Color), it still retains the Black and White selection in the printer properties. However, if you select a completely different model printer such
as Fax, and then go to Xerox MFP (Color), it will pick up the necessary default color settings.
If I install the printers locally on the user's PC/Computer, it works perfectly. However, it doesn't work when they are utilizing the print server's printers.
Things that I have tried:
Different drivers for Xerox. Global, PS, PCL.
Different brands of printers. Still experience the same issue.
Different port names.
Different protocols, raw versus LPR.
Different versions of excel, 2007 and 2010.
Looked through group policy to see if I could force it.
Checked the excel sheet settings, black and white only was not selected.
Tried most of the printer properties settings.
Created a Server 2012 print server and experienced the same result.
Xerox's custom configuration file editor.
*Something to note, if I have the black and white version utilize PostScript Drivers and the color version utilize PCL driver, it correctly loads the color settings. However, if you utilize Postscript for both versions, it doesn't.
I have to vary the print drivers. Ideally, I don't want to have to do this because I want consistency between prints.Hi,
Make sure you have the latest printer drivers - go to the manufacture's website, download and install if necessary.
