FileVault Locked Up while turning it on

I turned on filevault about 2 1/2 hours ago. It vaulted my Home folder in about 36 minutes and then proceeded to erase my original Home Folder. After waiting for an hour and 30 mins, i figured it was locked up. I hit the cancel button and it gave me an option to continue or to stop file vault. I hit continue and the bar went from the barber shop bar to a full bar saying that 5 seconds was reamining. After 1/2 hour, I figured it was totally jacked so i hit cancel again and stopped the process. Now it's stuck saying cancel and is giving me the barber shop bar. What should I do?

How did this turn out? I (foolishly) find myself having activated FileVault with secure erase, and after completing the encryption in about an hour, it has been stuck at "Deleting old Home folder" for more than an hour, with the barber pole showing. Any good news for me?

Nt iPad locked up while playing a game.  Now I can't get it to shut down or do anything.  The buttons don't do anything.  Help!!

Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Can't turn on FileVault, get message "an error occured during encryption (An error occurred during copying). FileVault won't be turned on for this account"

Every time I try to turn on FileVault I get a message "an error occured during encryption (An error occurred during copying). FileVault won't be turned on for this account".
The file is only 96GB and I have 800GB free space

I had this issue with my Mac Pro. I needed to turn off Filevault because it was causing performance issues with my Adobe video editing software. I got the same message you did. It took some time, but I finally figured out how to solve the problem!! If you look in the console (Finder/Go/Utilities/Console) and go to the system log, you will be able to pinpoint what happened when the filevault failed to turn off. In my case, it was a few Firefox profile cahe files that were an issue (so I copied the profile folder to another disk, trashed the folder on my system drive, then emptied the trash). Then I tried again, and this time it was because of a few photos that were "locked". I unlocked the offending images and then tried once again and SUCCESS! I then replaced the Firefox profile folder to it's original location and everything is working like a charm. But most definately if people have "locked" folders or photos, Filevault will not be able to copy them and delete the encrypted version. I wish I had found a thread like this when I was going through my Filevault nightmare! Would have saved me a lot of trouble, worry and aggravation.
If you really need to keep files encrypted or protected, simply create an encrypted disk image and keep only the files you want to protect in that image. It's extremely easy to do if you have Carbon Copy Cloner (An amazing and highly recommended  FREE system backup and hard drive cloning app. It will create a backup of whatever files or folders you chose and create a 128bit or 256bit password protected encrypted disk image that you can very easily access at any time.
    Hope this helps!!!!! Good luck!

  • FILEVAULT is refusing to turn off

    Hi,
I Turned on the filevault on my system (imac 20", 250GB) and now i want to turn it off course it is kinda giving me some problems, but it is refusing to turn off, it keeps displaying error message saying "turning off filevault requires an additional 4052.0 GB of free disk space to create an unencrypted copy of the home folder. Try emptying the trash or deleting files you dont need". i only have 250GB.

Well, I called tech support on this. The first rep hung up on me. Guess she gave up. The second rep, Justin, put me on hold for 10 minutes but was nice enough to check in every 3 minutes or so to let me know he was investigating it.
In the end he sent me a Help doc (pasted below). He said Apple Care (even though I spent $250 on it) does not cover FileVault issues. Justin claims there is a warning when you activate FileVault that states Apple DOES NOT support it.
Well, that's a flat out lie. I never saw such a warning. Anyway, all you poor customers like me who thought, "Hey, here is something under "Security" that might help me...." Well, BEWARE that Apple doesn't recommend we even USE FileVault.
I asked Justin, "Can I send in my Mac and let your side fix it?"
Justin told me: "Because Apple does not support FileVault, there will be an additional charge for us to turn it off for you."
    THANKS APPLE!!
For all of you poor folks you got trapped into using FileVault and now cannot turn it off -- you are on your own.
Follow these directions (but you'll need an external hard drive to succeed):

Mac OS X 10.4: FileVault - "There isn't enough space on your hard disk..." alert
    Issue or symptom
When turning FireVault on or off in Security preferences in Mac OS X 10.4 or later, this alert may appear:
"There isn't enough space on your hard disk to turn on (or off) FileVault"
The amount of free space stated as needed may be much greater than what is available ("4000 GB of free space is needed" may appear, for example).
    Products affected
    Mac OS X 10.4
    Solution
Create a new user account and transfer your data to the account via a sparse disk image. Afterwards, enable FileVault on the new account (or leave it off) if desired, then delete your original account. Here's how to do all that:
Important: Before performing these steps, you should back up your data (or your entire home folder) as a precaution.
    Start up in Safe Mode.
Log in to your account if you haven't already.
Create an interim disk image to transfer home folder files to
Open Disk Utility (in the Utilities folder, in the Applications folder).
Note: Do not open any other applications while completing these steps.
From the File menu, choose New > Blank Disk Image... .
From the Format: pop-up menu of the Blank Disk Image window, choose "sparse".
Adjust the Size pop-up menu. The disk image should have enough capacity to hold the contents of your home folder (directory). You can choose "Custom..." from the Size pop-up menu to enter a specific size if needed (if you need more than 4.7 GB, for example).
It's OK if you make the image a little larger than you expect you'll need. For example, if you have 2.3 GB of stuff in your Home, you might create a 2.6 GB (or larger) image.
How large is your home folder?
If you aren't sure how big your home folder (directory) is, follow these steps:
From the Finder's Go menu, choose Home.
Select all items in the window (or press Command-A).
If your home folder has eleven or more items, from the File menu, choose Get Info (or press Command-I).
If your home folder has ten or fewer items, hold the Option key, then from the File menu choose Show Inspector (or press Option-Command-I). (If Option is not held, Get Info is the menu choice, and separate information windows will open for each item if there are ten or fewer items selected, instead of a single, cumulative information window.)
Notice the number on the "Size:" line, this is the size of your home folder. You may need to wait a few moments for the size to be calculated depending on how much stuff is in your Home.
Give the image a unique name, but save it somewhere outside of your Home (don't save it on the desktop or in Documents, for example). You could save it at the root level of your Mac OS X volume, or on a different partition or different disk.
Note: If your hard disk does not have enough free space for the new image, create it on an external disk or different partition which has enough space.
Mount the new sparse disk image.
In the Finder, select the image volume and choose Get Info from the File menu. Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" is selected (at the bottom of the window).
Open your home folder (from the Go menu, choose Home).
Select all items in your Home and drag them (copy) to the mounted sparse disk image. Advanced note: Invisible files or folders might not be copied; usually this should present no issue or only a minor issue--for example, ssh users will need to accept the ssh key after completing these steps.
    Create a new user account
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts.
Create a new account that has the same privileges as your original, current account (enable "Allow user to administer this computer" if it is enabled for your current account). You may wish to give it a name similar to your current account.
Log out of your account and log in to the new account created in the previous step.
Copy files from the disk image to your new account
Mount the same, new sparse disk image that you copied files to.
In the Finder, select the image volume's icon and choose Get Info from the File menu.
Make sure "Ignore ownership on this volume" is selected (at the bottom of the window).
Highlight all items in the sparse disk image and drag them into your new account's home folder (from the Finder's Go menu, choose Home). You may be prompted to confirm that you wish to replace some items.
Again, you should not open any other applications during this process.
Restart when the copy has completed.
Log into the new user account and verify that all desired data has been transferred and that you can open files as expected (things on your desktop or in your Documents folder, for example).
If desired, enable FileVault for this account in Security preferences.
    Reclaiming disk space
If you wish to reclaim disk space, use Account preferences to delete the original user account. You can also delete the interim sparse image. Important: Do not delete these unless you are sure that all files have been properly copied (advanced users should make sure any needed invisible files were copied, if not you can use Terminal to copy or move them).

  • How can I stop my phone from going into the lock screen while talking on it? (New issue with ios 6)

Prior to ios 6, I could talk on my phone and have the mute button available. Now it goes into lock mode while speaking on the phone. This is terribly annoying when on conference calls and you want to mute/unmute, or just hang up a call. I now have to swipe to unlock, go to phone, and hang up or unmute. I've tried upping my timeout, but that just delays the inevitable.

Yep, it's a pain.  What's even more concerning is that at the Genius Bar, he was trying to tell me that this is the was it was supposed to be, so they probably fixed it in OS 6.  He said it is for people that are using "Bluetooth" and want to keep the phone in their pockets".  Ridiculous!  What compounds the issue is that the Apple Reps have no clue as to what's going on, and either do the senior tech's on the phone.  As I said in my message, this has made it very cumbersome, and makes it very difficult for those who need to use wired headsets.

  • Cant import iPhoto library. Locks up while "upgrading Library"

I have a new macbook air running OS X Mavericks. I tried to just copy the iphoto library from old mac to the pics library of new mac. I photo locks up while "upgrading library"
Tried to use migration assistant and it says I must first upgrade the OS of the old mac. My old mac cannot upgrade to mavericks, it is too old.
    Suggestions?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD

  • IPhoto locks up while looking through photos. What do I do?

My iPhoto locks up while looking through photos.  What do I do to fix this?  iPhoto '09 8.1.2

Try this:  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. If it doesn't  then you current library is damaged.
In that case apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

    Hello saturdaysaint:
I would try a couple of things:
Run permission repair as a "precaution."
Run repair disk from your software install DVD.
Trash com.apple.finder.plist (the finder preference file).
I never let software updates run automatically - I use the software update manually and then back up before any update.
