Filevault overwrites file associations on boot

how do I stop it from doing that, and/or what files do I need to edit/replace (ie. via an rc file or script) in order to reset the application/file associations back to the way I prefer?
I have dozens of associations, so using a gui method after every boot is completely infeasible, nor is turning off filevault.

I think I may have solved the problem, in large part thanks to you pointing out which file to look at. What I did was convert the plist file from data to xml format via the following command.
cd ~/Library/Preferences/
plutil -convert xml1 com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
I set all my preferences the way I like, backed up the xml file, then rebooted. Voila! A diff between the files, reveals no changes whatsoever, and my apps appear to be working as desired. So far so good, and barring some total fubaredness, we may have a winner...

  • When file vault is on, file associations don't persist across restarts

The subject says it all. Neither do things like default browser. A related thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8417405#8417405
has been marked as solved, in spite of the fact that this problem persists today on a brand new machine with 10.5.5.
I've tried deleting caches, restarting launch services, etc. as suggested in some other posts, but nothing has been effective. Has anyone actually solved this problem? (as opposed to thinking of things that might solve it)
Alternatively, does anyone use file vault with file associations that persist over restarts? (i.e., is this working for anyone? 8))

This is just to keep this topic alive in the event that someone has discovered a workaround short of disabling the FileVault (which I may end up doing).
I am running 10.5.6 - upgraded via the combo update, and this problem still persists.
I find that the associations that get reset on reboot: chat, mail, web browser, and office-related files (i.e., .doc, .xls). I'm wondering if there is some way to manually edit the preference files that store these associations to somehow force the change? Any ideas?
I have tried clearing caches, repairing permissions, etc; it definitely appears to me that the rules are somewhat different for the FileVault. In fact, I had an issue getting Apache working due to the FileVault (which was thankfully resolved by this article: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071224093830773).

  • Finder keeps returning file associations back to Preview / Quicktime

If you right click on a file, go to Get Info, there is a section that allows you to change the application that opens that file from now on. If you click the Change All button beneath it, it will then open all files of that particular format (e.g. JPG, GIF, AVI etc) in your newly chosen application.
I change all my picture files to open with Xee, and all my videos to open with VLC. However, for some reason my Mac returns the file associations back to Preview and Quicktime if I leave the computer on overnight or reboot. I tried fixing permissions but this hasn't solved the problem.
Any ideas? I only recently reinstalled Leopard but don't remember having this issue before.

do you use filevault? if not try rebuilding your launch services database.
    run the following terminal command
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
then redo "change all" in a get info window and see if it sticks.

  • Default File Associations - Windows 8 - override?

    Hello,
will the following Policy override the already set file associations?
    Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\File Explorer\Set a default associations configuration file
I am asking because I want to add some file associations and it would be terriable, if all other associations would be deleted. Cant find anything documented.

    Hi,
Based on my understanding, if we associate specific file type or protocol with default applications in the file, this default association should overwrite previous associations
set to these file types or protocols.
Besides, if this group policy is enabled, the file will be processed and default associations will be applied at logon time.
However, even if this policy is enabled, users will still be able to override default file type and protocol associations.
Regarding this setting, the following article can be referred to for more information.
Windows 8: Associate a file Type or protocol with a specific app using GPO (e.g:default mail client for MailTo protocol)

  • File associations change when new packages are installed (GNOME)

    Hello!
Imagine I set Geany to open text files. It works, I just double click the files and they open with Geany. When I install Wine/Gedit/whatever... it overwrites my file association with Geany, opening it by default with notepad.exe/gedit/whatever.
    Can someone help me?
    Thanks, acmps

I don't know why this happens sometimes after installing or messing around with wine, but I can also confirm multiple, false entries in that associations-list.
But I know how to get rid of it after it happened (concerning these entries in my gnome-open-dialogue):
Delete the files which fit in ~/.local/share/applications/* or have a look at mimeapps.list which is also located there

  • Don't overwrite files on install

I was wondering if there is a way to avoid overwriting files if they already exist when doing an install. For example, if I run an installer in order to upgrade an exe, I don't want the user's custom config files overwritten back to their defaults by the installer.
Edit: I should add, I don't know if it will actually overwrite them, I'm just assuming it will do a full install, putting the defaults back.
    CLA, LabVIEW Versions 2010-2013

    Hi Greg,
Unfortunately there is no quick and easy way to stop an installer from overwriting files within the LabVIEW application/installer builder (see this product suggestion). The reason why there isn't just a quick selection as to whether an installer will overwrite files is that the installer is developed to follow the Microsoft Windows Installer format. To edit the installer, you can modify the .msi installer file directly. The following links have information on the windows installer and how to modify it:
    Orca Database Installer Editing
    Microsoft Installer Information
    Replacing Existing Files
Hopefully these will give you a little more insight on the installer information. Another way you can manually stop the installer from overwriting the files would be to just save a copy of the desired configuration files elsewhere on your computer. Then, after running the installer, replace the new configuration files with the old ones. This can be quite tedious and may not work in some cases due to deeper associations between the files. But it would certainly be worth a try. Hopefully this at least gives you some general information.
If anyone else has other suggestions that they have found to be easier and effective, please post.
    Thanks!

  • Installing Mavericks & keeping iWork09 file association

I have ML/iWork 09 and I am installing Mavericks.  What's the best way to keep files associated with iWork 09?
The apps are in the /Applications/iWork09 so hopefully Mavericks will not overwrite them.  My plan is to either
    1. After installing Mavericks, go to a pages file and enter the full path to iWork09/Pages.app plus "change all"
    or
    2. Rename iWork09/Pages.app -> iWork09/Pages09.app and repeat 1.
I had similar problems with iLife when upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion (if I remeber correctly).  Turned out iPhoto09 and iPhoto11 easily coexisted but not the iMovies.  I could never use iMovie09 again. That's because of some details (app sigantures of imovie apps were identical I think).
Back to the new iWork, any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for advice, I will certainly not update.  I experimented with Numbers (which I do not use or need) and it created a mess.
I have CD-iWork 09. Used to get updates through Software Update, but only in Lion.  Apple orphaned CD-iWork 09 in ML.  The App Store - iWork 09 was considerd to be a separate program in ML, and I did not buy it. The button in the App Store said "buy $20" or so.  Thus there was no confusion which program was being updated, as there were no updates.
After installed Mavericks, there were NO Pages, Numbers, or Keynote in /Applications. Only the old ones in /Applications/iWork09.  However, the 3 programs showed up in App Store updates, with an "update" button next to them, but not under "purchases".  Also, I located them in the App Store, and the only option was "update", not "download".
So, unlike ML, Mavericks decided that AppStore-Numbers-3 is an update to CD-Numbers-2.3 and I am entitled to an update.  So I updated it.  But when I opened iWork09/Numbers.app, it was still 2.3.   However, the modified date changed to the download time.
So far, no complaints. It's actually good that it did not overwrite the old app. Maybe it just touched iWork09/Numbers.app to get things in sync.  Then I look again in the app store, and now it did say "download" next to Numbers.  This put Numbers-3 in /Applications.  Also, Numbers showed up in the App Store purchases.
So everything worked out fine? Not really. this is what I see in the App Store updates now. Keeps prompting me to update. Already did it once, it was happy for a while, only to come up with a new "update button".

  • Java.lang.Exception: Overwriting file

    Hi All,
We are having some trouble with one of our interfaces where XI creates files in append mode and gets the filename from the Payload. From last couple of days, we are getting the below error for some reason. There are no other extra config setups in the file CC.
Any help to figure out the issue would be highly appreciated.

    HI,
Once the file is appended, are you doing any further processing with file. because the error "not allowed due to configuration flag" and as youhave said its not for al the messages indicates to single point.
If the attempt to append the data in file if in case that is in processing and have locked with some other process flow marked after XI...
You may also need to look into the FTP log details...for more details

  • File associations in Windows 8.1 for applications on a network location

    Hi,
From Windows 7 to Windows 8 it has been done alot of changes regarding file file assocations. It seem that the main reason was security and was "patched" by having Windows read the hash for the applications instead of where the application was
    located.
but there seem to be some major hicups and there is limited info on the web covering these issues.
First issue: when running:  Dism /Online /Export-DefaultAppAssociations:\\Server\Share\AppAssoc.xml and then creating a GPO configuration pointing to
thi XML file.  With this feature only common file extensions is supported and when users are changing to another computer, these settings is not possible to syncronize using roaming profiles.
Second issue: In the appassoc.xml file applications must be either appid(metro app) or common application on local harddrive to be registered and not a .EXE
    file on a network location.
It seems a little strange if this is the case and if there is no other options for administratos to set file associations in more flexible ways. Does anyone have some more info on
this topic other than these link:

    https://keithga.wordpress.com/2013/11/13/file-associations-in-windows-8/

    Hi Primeid,
You could use Group policy for file associations or you could deploy the xml file during image deployment. However as you mentioned that the file associations only applies to common application on local hard drive or metro app.

We understand your confusion about this, but we hope you understand that using network location for file association deployment is highly insecure and it is out of our recommendation since the content in that network location could be changed without any
    notification or permissions constraint.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • File Associations in CS 5.5 for Win7

I preordered CS 5.5 Web Premium and just installed it.  I also uninstalled my previous version Adobe suite (CS4).  Now none of the file associations have been made for any of the Adobe related file types.  So for example, psd files are now associated with quicktime.  When I try to change the file association (set it to PhotoShop) it does not allow me to do so.  It acts like nothing happened.  What can I do?  Do I need to uninstall and reinstall?

I have exactly the same issue affecting InDesign and Illustrator. Photoshop had the same issue but it allowed you to set the default program. It seems the only way to do it is to open the program and open the document from there. This is a complete pain!

  • File associations in Bridge CS4

I would like to set the file associations for NEF files as Photoshop (as the default) and Nikon Capture. If I browse to Nikon Capture, Bridge will allow me to set both it and Photoshop as associations, but insists on making Capture the default. If I then click on Photoshop, to attempt to make it the default, Bridge won't allow Capture as an association. How can I have both programs listed, but with Photoshop as the default (so that if I double-click on the thumbnail, Photoshop will open)? Thanks.

    All,
I copied this from the Vista Help:
Change the program that opens a type of file
If you double-click a file in Windows and it opens in the wrong software program, follow these steps to choose the program you would prefer that file use. You can change this setting for an individual file, or you can tell Windows to open all files of that same type in the software program you choose.
    1. Open the folder that contains the file you want to change.
    2. Right-click the file that you want to change, and then, depending on the type of file, either click Open With or point to Open With and then click Choose Default Program.
    3. Click the program that you want to use to open this file.
    4. Do one of the following:
4A. If you want all files of that type to open in the same software program, select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.
4B. If you want only that file to open in the software program this one time, clear the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box, and then click OK.

  • File associations in Bridge CC after updating to CC 2014

I am facing a problem with the file association settings in Bridge CC after having updated my other creative suite programs to version CC 2014.
In previous version I had the option when opening eg. PDF file to chose "open with", and then chose Illustrator or Photoshop. This option is no longer available. When using the Preference menu under file association I can only change the default settings to be either Acrobat or for some reason Firefox. When browsing for Illustrator or Photoshop and choosing the program the PDF file will only open in Illustrator or Photoshop as default not Acrobat as it is suppose to. Does anybody have a solution to this problem.

Thank you for the answer, but is doesn't fix the problem. The explorer settings lets me open pdf files in Acrobat, Illustrator or Photoshop.
The problem is that Bridge doesn't allow me to open pdf files in Illustrator.
When trying to solve the problem by altering the file type association settings, browsing and choosing Illustrator CC 2014, the pdf files will then open by default in Illustrator, and this is not what i want. I want the option to chose, open with Illustrator, and still have Acrobat as the default program.
Anybody know how to fix this?

  • File Associations in Bridge

I've installed and activated Photoshop CS6 (64-bit, Windows 7).  The file associations in Bridge are all blown, defaulting either to "none" or IE Explorer.  When I try to open a file from Bridge, it opens in Windows Live Photo Gallery, and right-clicking does not return Photoshop as one of the choices.  This occurs with Raw files as well as jpegs and tiffs.  This has never happened to me with CS4 or CS5, nor with the CS6 Beta that I had been using (and uninstalled before installing CS6).  Do I have to manually re-set all of the file associations?  How does Bridge not recognize the program of which it is a sub-program?

Thanks for the response.  I did uninstall CS5 after installing CS6, but it still seems illogical that Bridge wouldn't default to Photoshop for any file types.  I also tried resetting to "default" settings, and that just changed the few I had fixed back to "none".  I tried your suggestion for the three resets, and that did not improve the situation.  Should I re-install the whole program? (This was an upgrade package:  Does CS5 need to be installed for me to do that?).
    Thanks again.

  • File associations in Bridge CS4 for multiple images

After a "cache purge" my file associations got altered.  I can go into Edit>preferences> file associations and change that to photoshop; but if I click MULTIPLE images in Bridge and right click "open with" I only get Illustrator as an option.  How can I change this to photoshop as a default when trying to open MULTIPLE images?

Ronald Keller - thank you.  I am practically in tears laughing about how something so completely simple has had me fretting for days.  Could it be my over 60 mind has completely failed me now, or is it I am just a bit rusty on using my software?  Anyway, thank you for taking the time to offer up this response!
