FileVault problems in Yosemite

About 4 days ago, several minutes after login, my system would lock up.  It did not matter what I was doing, the rainbow circle would appear and stay until I held down the power button and powered it off.
Subsequent powering on, the system would freeze at login about half way through a status bar.  After the third restart attempt, I plugged the laptop in and left it for over 14 hours, it never logged in.
This is a 3 week old, Macbook Pro 15"
I restarted it the hard way twice more and was able to log in, the status bar was still there, but it moved pretty quickly.
I got a message telling me I had shut down the system incorrectly.
I had this issue every day I used the laptop since 4 days ago.
I found an article about turning off the filevault, I did this.  Now when I log in, it does not display the status bar, it logs in right away and I have not had the same issue since turning off the filevault.
FYI, I even reloaded the laptop and the issue did not go away for even one minute.  Only turning off the filevault worked.
I do NOT want to leave filevault turned off.  I tried turning it back on after allowing the disk to decrypt, and the problem happens again.  I tried resetting permissions and then decrypted and tried to re-encrypt, same problem.
Anybody know what the problem is?

  • Mail problems on Yosemite

    Hi there,
Does anybody know if anything is going to be done regarding the mail problem on Yosemite?
this was a recurring on Maverics too...
Since i updated to Yosemite, mail does not work well on my iMac, i cannot get my mail... but i can send mail.
it does not seem to connect properly to my Pop account.
my mail does work well on my iPhone and other devices.
it was fine after the recent Yosemite update, and now it's back... and very frustrating,
is there anyone who can help ? or anyone at Apple that is going to fix it for once and for all ?
    Thanks.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • To people who has Filevault Problem

I might had brain shortage last night. I turned on Filevault w/o doing any research. After restart my computer. I had problem login to my account. It took me all night until now. Finally, I solved it. I had been search with any related post, but none of them work.
After computer restart, I entered my password. It took 15 - 20 secs and return with message " you are unable to login "XXXX" account because filevault has an error."
I changed my Master Password, reset my account password. Verify Disk permission. nothing really help.
The way I solved this problme is
1.Login to another account with Administrator permission.
    2.Go to System Preference
    3.Go to Account
4.Delete the account you enable the filevault
5.After you click "-" sign, it will ask you with 3 opinions.
5-1. Save the account home folder in Disk Image.
5-2. Do not change the home folder
    5-3. Delete the home folder.
PLEASE SELECT Opinion 2 "DO NOT CHANGE THE HOME FOLDER"
After delete the account. Create a SAME ACCOUNT NAME with the SAME PASSWORD (Master Password)
Log out and Login with the account you just created. System will asked if you want to use the same home folder. Just click "YES"
After login,You will back to the original setting on the account.
Hope this will help people who stuck on filevault problem
DO NOT ENABLE FILEVAULT UNLESS YOU ARE READY FOR PROBLEM.

    Hey Fresh Blue,
I wanted to change my "short name" (the name that shows up on the home folder).
Do you think I can do what you did to change the short name and keep the contents of my home folder.
Delete my current account, and not delete the home folder, create a new account with a different short name.. then log on with the new account and use the same home folder?

  • Massive sound problems in Yosemite

    Hi,
I have been experiencing massive sound problems with Yosemite. It basically effects everything except the sound control in the control centre.
    What happens:
I can't control the sound volume anymore. Key board sound control does not respond (sound symbol is struck out), sound bar in menu bar in greyed out.
If sound symbols are not greyed out, the sound will stay on the level it currently is. Neither key board nor menu bar icon can change the volume.
    When it happens:
    When I plug/un-plug headphones.
When I use iTunes. iTunes will even stop playback... the only chance to get iTunes back to normal is restarting the app.
    When I use Skype.
Occasionally on any incident... there is no app in particular linked to this.
What I do to get around it:
Restarting the mac... this will help until I sent my Mac to sleep or do any of the things above.
Accessing sound control via the control centre (which is work around, yet very annoying).
Killing sound via terminal does not do anything.
Btw. there is only one thing listed in the sound input/output menu.
This problem is very annoying and occurs several times daily, especially since I work a lot with sound and music. I know this an weary argument, but considering what I paid for this machine ... bla bla bla... I need a fix.
    Thanks for any advice.
    Andy

    Hi,
    Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I have. It works pretty much like any re-start does. As soon I use headphones or send my Mac to sleep, it goes back to unresponsive sound control.
Edit: Just tried it again and it didn't do anything. Key board sound control is still greyed out...
    Any other suggestions?

  • LEOPARD -FILEVAULT- PROBLEM HELP!. PASSWORD PROBLEM?

Hello.. my friend installed LEOPARD upgrade today. Everything went OK, then he do the Softwware update and the re-start and when it went up, his MacBook Pro can't take his password. Some message with FILEVAULT problem came up.
He can re-installed Leopard again and save his data?

I solved my problem. In short: Manually decrypt your sparseimage, place the data in your home directory and disable filevault. Then login and enjoy! (And maybe enable FileVault again...
    You need:
    - An extra user with no FV enabled (admin)
    - An external disk drive with enough space to hold your home directory
    Here is what I did:
    1. Restore your Tiger setup from backup (you DO have one, don't you?)
    2. Log in to your FileVaulted account. Open Terminal
    3. Do "cd .. ; sudo cp -R -p johndoe /Volumes/ABig_ExtDrive/" (Assume your homedirectory/shortname is 'johndoe')
    4. Upgrade to Leopard
    5. Log into the admin account, connect the external drive
    6. Open Terminal
    7. Do "cd .. ; sudo mv johndoe johndoe_old" This renames your old homedirectory which has your filevault image. If you don't have enough space left, you can remove this directory / sparseimage by typing "sudo rm johndoe/johndoe.sparseimage"
    8. Do "cp -R -p /Volumes/ABig_ExtDrive/johndoe ." to copy your data back, non-crypted (you should be in /Users directory now)
    9. Type "sudo dscl . -delete /Users/johndoe HomeDirectory" to disable FileVault
    10. No reboot required, just log in to your johndoe account!
    (11. Remove the /Users/johndoe_old -directory)
You can verify #9 with this:
Your johndoe account should have this key, like this:
    [terminal begin]
    admin$ sudo dscl . -read /Users/johndoe/ HomeDirectory
    HomeDirectory: <home_dir><url>file://localhost/Users/johndoe/johndoe.sparseimage</url></home_dir>
    [terminal end]
..which means this account has FileVault enabled..
..and the admin account should not have this key:
    [terminal begin]
    admin$ sudo dscl . -read /Users/admin/ HomeDirectory
    No such key: HomeDirectory
    [terminal end]
    ..nobe, disabled.
    HTH,

  • Problems using Yosemite

    Problems using Yosemite:
-cannot find previously purchased audiobooks on iTunes
-cannot find all previously purchased apps on Apps
-cannot use files made in iWork 08 (Pages and Numbers) with the new Pages and Numbers in Yosemite
-have iWork 08 and never upgraded to iWork 09
-find it hard to believe there is no backward compatibility
    Help?

Your first two questions need to be asked in the Yosemite forum.
    For your iWork '08 question:
The new versions cannot open any iWork '08 or earlier documents or templates. You will get an error saying to open the files in iWork '09 then open them in the new version. Keep in mind that the new versions are a significant downgrade from any previous version. If you want to use the latest versions of the iWork apps I suggest that you buy a retail copy of iWork '09 from a third party such as Amazon or eBay & then update to the new iWork apps in the Mac App Store. You might check this link for the iWork '09 trial. I have no idea if it is still available.
Your iWork '08 apps will run in Yosemite as long as they are updated to the latest - Keynote 4.0.4, Pages 3.0.3, Numbers 1.0.3.

  • Safari problems in Yosemite... freezes now not working

Soon after installing Yosemite I was finding that when scrolling in Safari my computer would freeze about 3 times a day.   The only way to fix the problem was to shut down the computer by holding the power button and restarting with the power button.  A few days ago this process ended up corrupting my disk and I had to reinstall everything from a time machine backup.
I am still getting freeze ups two or three times per day that require complete restarts.  However today, after the last freeze up safari will not completely load any pages.
I did run disk utility to see if there were any problems and there were none.
Do I just migrate to firefox or is there a fix for this?
Using a Macbook Pro Late 2011

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • FileVault Fails on Yosemite when FileVaultMaster.keychain is present in /Library/Keychains

    Hi,
I've been using the method described here to create institutional recovery keys for deployment our 10.7-10.9 target systems. This approach has worked well in my environment for the past few years; we're a DeployStudio shop and typically include the FileVaultMaster.keychain (prepared for deployment with the private key removed) in a package payload that's delivered to our target systems as part of a DeployStudio workflow.
In testing on 10.10 & 10.10.1 targets with the institutional key in place (at /Library/Keychains), I've found I'm unable to enable FileVault via System Preferences. I do see the expected message indicating that 'A recovery key has been set by your company, school, or institution' but after clicking 'Continue' am not given the option to choose users to unlock the disk. Instead, I see one of the following three "FileVault Failed" errors: "Unable to create a FileVault context", "Boot file not written", or "The given disk is in use by a driver".
I first suspected a problem with the recovery partition restored during the DeployStudio workflow, but I think I've ruled out this possibility: 1) I found that by removing the FileVaultMaster.keychain from /Library/Keychains on a DeployStudio-imaged system, I'm once again able to enable FileVault normally via System Preferences; and 2) I can reproduce this issue by deploying a prepared FileVaultMaster.keychain to a target system on which I've installed Yosemite using the stock installer from the MAS.
Has anyone run into a similar problem with institutional keys in 10.10?
    Thanks,
    -Bill

A bit more testing (using diskutil to compare the status of the recovery and boot volumes before and after trying to enable FileVault) suggests that the boot volume is somehow becoming damaged when I try to enable FileVault through System Preferences (when FileVaultMaster.keychain is in place).
Before trying to enable FileVault: diskutil verifyVolume /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System
The volume OS X Base System appears to be OK
File system check exit code is 0
Finished file system verification on disk1s2 OS X Base System
Before trying to enable FileVault: diskutil verifyVolume /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD
The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK
File system check exit code is 0
Finished file system verification on disk0s2 Macintosh HD
After trying to enable FileVault: diskutil verifyVolume /Volumes/OS\ X\ Base\ System
The volume OS X Base System appears to be OK
File system check exit code is 0
Finished file system verification on disk1s2 OS X Base System
After trying to enable FileVault: diskutil verifyVolume /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD
    Volume header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD was found corrupt and needs to be repaired
File system check exit code is 8
Error: -69845: File system verify or repair failed
Underlying error: 8: POSIX reports: Exec format error
I can repair Macintosh HD, but it apparently becomes damaged again on subsequent attempts to enable FileVault.
I encountered a new scenario where the system hangs for a few seconds after clicking 'Continue' to enable FileVault, then reboots (without presenting one of the three error messages described in my original post) and begins encryption, but still without having presented the pane to select users to unlock the disk.
I have verified that my recovery partition version matches that of the OS (when booted to the Recovery Partition, sw_vers returns ProductVersion: 10.10). So far, I've been able to reproduce this behavior on these systems: Late 2008 MacBook Pro, Late 2009 MacBook, Mid 2013 MacBook Air, and Late 2014 Mac mini (straight out of the box with 10.10 and the original, unmodified recovery partition).

  • Weird font problem on Yosemite pop up boxes

Has anyone found a solution to this bug when a dialog/pop up box occurs in Yosemite? I've already tried to reset my fonts, removed error font's and cleared font cache and still no luck.

Back up all data before proceeding.
Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.
Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.
If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select
              File ▹ Restore Standard Fonts...
You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.
Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.

  • Problem with yosemite and parallels

Since I have upgraded to yosemite and parallels 10 my windows 7 has been using a lot of CPU resources.  Windows 7 runs very slow and it been using almost constantly 100% of one of the quads resources.  This just started to happen when I upgraded, because I did not have this problem with Mavericks and Parallels 9 or 10. I have an iMac 2011, 8GB of Ram.  Has anybody had this issue.  Thanks.

Thanks for the response.  I was searching on a parallels forum website and found the following:
As from the symptoms, the issue can lie in NVRAM preferences of your particular Mac.
Please do the following to solve:
open Terminal application on Mac (Applications/Terminal.app)
please type this command (you may copy-paste it to the terminal from this message):
    sudo nvram boot-args="debug=0xd4e"
    Hit Enter.
You will be prompted to enter Mac user password. Please type it and hit Enter.
Note: you won't see what you are typing, just type and hit Enter. If you don't have Mac user password, please create a temporary one.
Then you may restart your Mac and the issue should be solved.
If not - please reply me here and I'll create a ticket for you in Support.
I did the above and it seemed to correct the problem.

  • Problems Report: Yosemite Language/Region and iOS 8.0.2 Bluetooth

    OS X YOSEMITE LANGUAGE/REGION PROBLEM:
Since I installed OS X Yosemite (10.10) on my 13 inch Macbook Pro Retina Late 2013, my Finder's Favorites and Tags appears in two different languages (English and Portuguese). I am from Brazil, however, I use my system in English. Whereas I set my language to English, my Finder should appear only in English.
As you can see, until Desktop option is in English, below it, everything is in Portuguese. Note that in Mavericks everything appeared in English as it should be. Same for the Tags, which is "Vermelho" instead of "Red" and so on, but "All tags" appears in English, instead of Portuguese.
Please Apple, do not forget to correct it for the next upgrade!
    iOS 8.0.2 BLUETOOTH PROBLEM:
Another problem I want to report is my iPhone 5S (iOS 8.0.2) Bluetooth connection, which has a big issue. Since iOS 8.0.2 upgrade, I could not use my Bluetooth anymore. My device can be found from other devices, such as my Macbook Pro, for example, however, I am not able to pair or even find any other device from my iPhone to others.
Hence, I am not able to use Handoff, connect to the car's DVD player, Headphones and so on.
What is going on there, Apple? Both this problems are amateurs. What is happening with the Test Software Engineering phase.
I was wondering if it would be possible to see some great news about both of this issues as soon as possible.
Thanks in advance for any further help from you guys.

SSD is brand new..out of the box never use it before... is working totally fine on my external enclosure.
Great. Then problems with the SDD itself are far less likely.
Yosemite installs fine and I can run normally.
Good. then your Yosemite Installer is not damaged, and your SSD is probably good.
As soon as I put it into the internal the Yosemite install just never finishes, time keeps restarting.
I can see the SSD i can copy files but I can't install Yosemite.  what do think I can do??
Then there is a problem with that setup. If you have installed onto it as an external, it is unlikely to be a Drive format problem. But to give yourself the best possible outcomes, use Disk Utility to erase the SSD before the Install.
Be methodical. Use a process of elimination. What can you trust, and what are you not sure of?
It still could be a marginal Drive cable. ifixit and other sellers can sell you a new cable for very little money.

  • Is apple going to fix the boot camp problem in yosemite?

I was told to wait on my install because of loss of data problems with boot camp and Yosemite? Is apple working on this problem or do I just have to forget ever updating to Yosemite? Just kidding they probably are looking at all the time. Thanks for your time.

If you have not made any disk partition changes or resized windows or used OSX Disk Utility after Windows was installed, you are in a relatively safer position. I would highly recommend backups of both OSX and Windows with the ability to rollback, before you attempt the upgrade.
