Filevault won't recover disk space

I have filevault on on my macbook pro. When I shutdown, it usually recovers the disk space that is replaced from the files I deleted (when I emptied the trash), as it should. However, this is the second time that I've had this problem where, when I shutdown or restart or logoff, filevault won't recover my disk space. And I need that space...now! What do I do? Why won't it show the "recovering disk space" thing when I shut down?! In the past, I just waited a while, and eventually, it worked one day.

  • Shutdown postponed by message asking if FileVault should recover disk space

Does anyone know how to specify a default preference for handling this message? After selecting "shutdown" and agreeing to "shutdown now", several seconds later, after having walked away from the screen, and then glancing back, I find I am then prompted to answer "continue or cancel" before shutdown can proceed. This is annoying, as I expect the system to be able to shut down after I instructed it to. Further, this message interferes with the system's ability to automatically shut down cleanly when the UPS detects an electrical power failure. Following is the text of the message: Your home folder, which is protected by FileVault, is using more disk space than necessary. FileVault can recover this space. Would you lke to continue? When you click continue, FileVault will recover the unused disk space. Although this takes a while and you cannot stop it, it's recommended that you let FileVault recover the disk space now.

Why is it so many of the questions I need answers to, others have asked, but not gotten a solution to either?
The filevault reclaim space warning is very frustrating when combined with Timbuktu. If you attempt to restart a computer remotely that is protected by filevault, and the warning about reclaiming space comes up, you are stuck. The Timbuktu process has already been stopped. I've found that I can SSH into the box, and I can likely kill the process responsible for the reclaim space warning, but it would be nice to just have the box timeout after a few seconds, and default to Cancel.
Does this happen with RDC (or the VNC client built into 10.4?)

  • Automatic yes to allow filevault to recover disk space

When ever I shutdown/restart, there is a dialog box that pops up notifying me that FileVault is taking up more space than necessary and it asks if I would like to recover this space (I already under stand the hole expanding disk image thing, so we can leave that alone). As long as I am not in a hurry, I say yes, which is most of the time. It gets annoying when I shut down, and run off to do other things (some times I get ADD moments while waiting for the dialog box) while I think the computer is shutting down only to come back and see the dialog box.
Is there any way to set this so that it does not even ask me, and just automatically recovers the disk space?

I doubt it, but there might be an "automatic no" available if you don't want to recover the space. I don't have a laptop to test this, but I've read that if you unplug a laptop Mac from the wall electricity, it won't display that dialog box.

  • Why Oracle Linux 5 cannot recover disk space after delete files ?

    Folks,
Hello. When I create a Virtual Machine for Oracle Linux 5 to install EBS R12, I allocate 300GB to the VM. I download EBS R12 Source Files (45.7GB) and unzip the files (46GB). Total size of stage area directory(EBS_R12) is 91.7GB.
Because some files are corrupted and cannot install, I move the folder EBS_R12 into trash but cannot empty trash. I move EBS_R12 from trash back to the directory. Then at root user, use command "rm -rf " to delete EBS_R12 completely.
I shut down Oracle Linux 5 and restart it, 91.7GB disk space cannot recover.
I download some other files into Oracle Linux files and then delete those files, but disk space cannot be recovered either.
It seems that OEL5 virtual disk only can expand but cannot be reduced. The VM disk space is less than 200GB now and not enough to install EBS R12.
Can any folks tell me how to make 91.7GB disk space and some more disk space come up ?

    Folks,
Hello. Thanks a lot for replying.
Host OS is Windows 7, Guest OS is Oracle Linux 5 on the top of VMPlayer 3. The VM of Oracle Linux 5 is created on the external USB drive and not on the local hard disk.
There is a directory /tmp/VMwareDnd/376c7cae/EBS_R12 in Oracle Linux 5 file system. I copy/Paste the folder of EBS_R12 from Windows 7 into Oracle Linux 5. All of zip files and unzipped files are placed in the folder of EBS_R12.
After EBS_R12 is deleted, the external USB drive(F:) doesn't come up 91.7GB disk space.
    My question is:
Where to run "boot>linux rescue" command ?
Does this command work correctly in the external USB drive ?

  • Recovering disk space after deleting files.

    Hello,
I am used to using Panther and now I'm using Leopard. When I deleted files then emptied the trash and later logged out or shut down it would ask me do I want to recover the disk space on my drive, then once this is finished I could see the more space on my hard drive. I find now that with Leopard I have deleted a lot of old music etc that I copied over and I have emptied the trash but the file space doesn't get reclaimed. So, my question is: does emptying the trash really delete the fills or is there something I need to do additionally to get the disk space back once I delete something.
Thanks in advance for any help.

I have the same problem. I transferred and deleted several gigs of music and photo files but the hard drive is not recognizing the free space. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

  • How do i recover disk space after deleting windows partition?

I have a macbook pro running on maverick. I removed the windows partition using bootcamp assistant, but I did not gain the disk space back. The disk space is 500gb but it's still showing 250gb?

Yes, that matters. So your partition map looks something like this:
You see one single space surrounded in blue with the disk name in the center, sort of like the above. But, you say that this space is only 250 GBs of your 500 GB drive. In other words the space in the Size field reads 250 GBs, mol? Am I correct in my understanding?
I suggest you might give this a try: repair the hard drive using Disk Utility. Then restart the computer. See if that recovers the space. It would also help if you could send me a screen image like mine but of your Disk Utility display on the same settings.

  • Can't recover disk space after finishing/deleting movies

My ipod touch (8GB) still reports that 2 GB are taken up by videos, even though I don't have any accessible videos on it now. These appear to be the footprints of two movies I rented from itunes. But I finished watching the movies and they don't appear in my itunes rented movie list. When I look under the "videos" tab on my ipod, the two movie titles briefly flash on the screen and then disappear -- so there is no way to select them and attempt to delete them again. I have tried syncing to the itunes library on my Mac (which does not show the movies) but this does not release the space on my ipod. What can I do to recover this 2 GB of lost space on the ipod?

I had the same issue with former rented movies still "appearing" though I had viewed and could no longer access. When I upgraded to 2.0 I ended up restoring to factory defaults and that process removed all the ghost images and freed up the memory. However, I'm noticing that it is occuring again. Has anyone found a way of preventing or correcting without reimaging and restoring?

  • HT201250 recover disk space after backup delete

I intentionally deleted the backup file time machine created, I bought a new larger drive, but my mac doesn't recognioze the available space.  How di I fix this?

You can try reformating it to make sure it is formatted properly. Open Disk Utility and if you can see the drive, reformat it to Mac OS Entended (Journaled). If that doesn't work, please type what brand of drive in your next post.

  • Recovering disk space on post office

    Hi.
When we migrated to 2014 from GW8 on NW6.5, I was very surprised by the
sheer size of the PO that hung off our primary domain. The primary domain is
a routing domain, and as such the PO is not really a live PO. It has our
admin mailbox (logs etc) and a couple of random mailboxes that were moved
there for short-term retention (old user accounts). The total size of all
the mailboxes amounted to nowhere close to the total size of the PO.
Now it's migrated, I've archived all of the old mailboxes that live with
that PO, and now there are just 2 active mailboxes on there, total size for
both around 200MB. The PO folder is just over 100GB!
Should I assume that will shrink now I've removed the other mailboxes, or do
I need to force a specific GWCHECK through to get it to reduce?
    Thanks in advance, Alan

The structure hasn't fundamentally changed in 20 years and is likely to stay
for some time. So learning the structure is certainly of great value. Most of
the overall administration books on GW have outlined it very well, and the
formal docs do have the details scattered. The best docs I've found were in
the GW 2012 docs that outlined the message flow in good detail that is still
totaly valid even if the icons the older style. I think time to prod the docs
people to carry this forward to 2014.

The folders you have are what should be there, only the "lost+found" is not
normal for within the PO. The size balence is a normal showing that you have
users with mail in the system. So the link I gave you will help to figure
which user(s) are using the space so that you can deal with them directly as
appropriate. If the user's mailboxes total don't add up to at least the space
used, then it may be a case of files less than 2 weeks since last editted and
won't be deleted by maintenace until that is passed.

  • Mysteriously 'recovered' disk space

After he inadvertantly trashed his Mail App. on his iMac (MacOS 10.6.8) my Dad asked me to assist him recover it.  I used the Snow Leopard Installer disc and performed a re-install of the OS. This took about 40-50 minutes to complete. After this I used Software Update which downloaded and installed the 10.6.8 combined installer.  This took another 30 minutes or so.
All went well and my Dad has just emailed to say now Mail is back in action again.
In his email however he has also said that his internal HDD capacity, before I recovered his Mail app., was just over 31 GB.  Since recovery his HDD capacity has gone back up to over 111 GB.  I don't understand why.  Can anyone explain this?

Can't be certain what it was, since it's now all gone, but some possible clues here.

  • Is it only Filevault that recovers disk space?

    Hey all,
i wanted to know is it only Filevault that can recover disk space or can the basic Home folder do this as well? Thanx for any replies in advance

FileVault is using a sparse disk image just like the ones you can create with disk utility.
Your data is encrypted and written to the hard drive as a growing disk image. When logging into your account the image gets mounted and your data appears unencrypted within a virtual disk. The more files you add to your homefolder (= the virtual disk), the more data has to be encrypted and stored on your harddrive so the image file grows. When you delete files within your homefolder there's a difference in size between the virtual disk and the image file on your computer. Mac OS reclaims the unused hard drive space by shrinking the disk image.
Only disk images need this kind of treatment and there's no other way to recover disk space besides actually deleting some files, which is what you're doing anyway.
There are a few ways to recover space:
    - delete unused cache files in /username/Library/Caches
    - remove language files for applications using http://www.bombich.com/software/local.html
    - ....

  • Too little free disk space (FileVault problem)

I've recently been downloading and/or deleting fairly large files, and FileVault hasn't been offering to clean up my home directory on reboot. This means my computer has 276.9 MB of free disk space - not an ideal situation. I'd very much like to just turn off filevault at this point - I'm nothing but unhappy with its performance - but, of course, I don't have the free disk space to do so.
Is there any way to force filevault to allow me to recover disk space?

Do you have any files you and delete (trash) manually to make room, such as old iPod Software and iSight Updaters?
Or, at least backup some files to a CD and DVD that you don't use that often?
Do you have "Software Update" set to "Install and Keep Packages"?
You can safely remove these (backup) these packages as well to make room.
Do a search on your hard drive for any ".dmg" or ".pkg" files and see what turns up.

  • Filevault: Disk space issue

    Hello everybody,
I experience these problems using Filevault: I copied files from my iMac to my Macbook to import them into iPhoto. After finishing the import I deleted the pre-import folder and logged out to compact my Filevault. Interestingly the disk space previously claimed by the afore mentioned folder does not seem to be available after the next login. Finder shows 5.12 GB free disk space where about 25 GB had to be.
I used WhatSize to explore the hard disk and discovered my Filevault's sparsebundle to consume all the missing disk space. Although the folder is definitively deleted and the sparsebundle was several times compacted by logging out the disk space does not become available.
My next step was to examine my Filevault's sparsebundle (files) via hdiutil in Terminal after switching to another user's accout:
    $ sudo hdiutil info
    $ hdiutil imageinfo xyz.sparsebundle
This gave me a first impression of the diskimage settings used by Filevault.
    $ hdiutil compact xyz.sparsebundle
I tried to compact the sparsebundle manually. Output:
0 bytes of 23.8 GB possible freed. (Translated from German output.)
As indicated in the hdiutil manpage compacting a sparsebundle makes hdiutil delete the files which are not used any more. Thus, there needs to be some (still used) information left in the 8 MB files that can obviously not be deleted.
So I finally tried to resize the sparsebundle via hdiutil without success. I tought that shinking the sparsebundle's size would force Filevault (or hdiutil in the background) to reorganize the image's content being afterward able to free the disk space via "compact":
$ hdiutil resize -size min xyz.sparsebundle
    and
    $ hdiutil resize -size 60g xyz.sparsebundle
    respectively
did finish without errors but did not resolve the problem.
My next step will have to be to deactivate an re-activate Filevault after copying my files to an external hard disk. But I do want to circumvent this step.
Does anyone have other suggestions how to free the unused used disk space?
    Thank you in advance!
    Johannes

I find a solution by myself:
*Howto shrink Filevault encrypted home folder (sparsebundle)*
What you need before you start:
    1) Filevaulted user account ( user )
    2) Drive Genius application by Prosoft
    3) A second admin user ( user2 )
    4) Three hours (depending on the Filevault‘s size)
    What you need to do:
    1) Log in as another admin user
    2) Open „Terminal“.
    3) Navigate to the user‘s folder:
    cd /Users/ user
    4) Change filevaulted folder‘s and subfolder‘s permissions:
    sudo chown -R user.sparsebundle user2
    5) Rename sparsebundle file:
    mv user.sparsebundle user.dmg
    6) Open user.dmg with Drive Genius.
    7) Defrag mounted image.
This will take a while depending on the actual size of the sparseimage.
    8) Close application and unmount image via Finder or mark mounted folder and press „cmd + E“.
    9) Rename image:
    mv user.dmg user.sparsebundle
    10)Change permissions:
    chmod -R user.sparsebundle user
    11)Log out current user ( user2 ).
12)Log in user and log out to compact the Filevault‘s sparseimage.
    Feel free to comment!

  • How to free up disk space on drive C

We have been running Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials Sp1 for a number of years now without any apparent problems. We have noticed over this period, the free space on the 'C' drive diminishing over time. We are now at a point where housekeeping
needs to be undertaken to prevent disk space issues occurring in the future.
    1) Is there an in-built utility that would identify what applications or directories are using the most space? If not, are you aware of a utility that could offer this functionality i.e. Treesize. Does Microsoft offer a utility?, maybe as part of Systernals?
    2) The 'C' drive is 60Gb in size (I believe this was the default size during the install). When the server was initially installed, it had 20Gb free space on drive 'C'. At the point of writing, free space is now 7Gb. All installed applications and user shares
are pointing to a second drive (D). I'm assuming that the increase in used space is caused by log files or windows updates.
    2) I've manually scoured the 'C' drive and noticed that folder 'C:\Windows\winsxs' is 10.6Gb in size. I believe this folder relates to Windows Updates. Are we able to carry out housekeeping on this folder? If so, please could you advise the correct way of achieving
this. The 'Disk Cleanup' utility only offers to clean up 1.2Gb which is not enough.
I hope someone can offer some assistance.

  • IBooks Author versions eating disk space

    Hello
running iBooks Author Version 2.2 on Yosemite 10.10.3
It seems that the automatic saving does not save only the changes to the project, but the whole project every time.
On a big project that consumes GBs of disk space.
In earlier versions of iBooks Author you were able to delete non used versions from within the App:
Why is iBooks Author using up my scratch disk space?
I found out where the versions are saved (in a hidden folder where you have no privilegies).
I gave myself the privilegies needed and deleted 1 of the earlier versions...
    Not a good idea...
If i go to File -> Revert (maybe bad translation from German) the App hangs an blocks the whole system...
Has anybody found a solution to recover disk space used by iBooks Author versioning?

Your computer but....are  you working on a network at the school or in your home with  your own  net connection?
Networks have exclusions set  by the IT department to prevent misuse.
A book exported to PDF , should  show teh  book content , albeit, slighty different to what your see in iBA or iBooks when previewed.  Again, it  if you are on a network, there may be issues.
Run a text with a default template saved from iBA and see what the result  is.
