FileVault won't turn off it said it needs 105GB more space

I tried taking all my movies off to give FileVault the 105GB of space it needs to turn it off. Even though my Mac said I had 102GB of movies on my Mac when I deleted them all it said it still needed 98 more GB to turn off FileVault and according to my Mac the amount of movie space I was using didn't change. Any suggestions?

First, make at least two current backups of all data. One backup is not enough to be safe. Warning: Time Machine does not back up a legacy FileVault while you're logged in.
Then delete most of the data in your home folder. No less than about two-thirds. Deleting means moving to the Trash and emptying the Trash. Log out and log back in. You should then be able to deactivate legacy FileVault in the Security & Privacy preference pane.
Finally, restore the files you deleted. That will be easier if you don't use Time Machine to back up. If you do use it, you'll have to dig down into the backups folder to find the most recent snapshot of your home disk image file, then mount it and copy the files back to their original location. You can't use the time-travel interface for this purpose. The disk image file, named "you.sparsebundle" (substitute your short user name for "you"), will be in the snapshots of your home folder.
If you restore everything, you'll probably fill up your boot volume again. Some of the files may have to be restored to a secondary storage device, and it will then have to be backed up along with your primary device.

  • HT4790 Legacy FileVault won't turn off

To use Time Machine, I need to turn off Legacy FileVault.  When I try to turn off Legacy FileVault, I get a message telling me I need 51.7GB to turn it off.  I have a 2GB computer so this message makes no sense (and I double checked it does tell me 52GB).

Temporarily copy most or all of the files from your home folder to an external drive. Delete the originals. Log out and log back in. You should then be able to deactivate legacy FV and copy the files back.

  • Sending my iphone 5 in for a repair and have done all of the instructions including the "erase all content and settings". The phone took me back to the basic set up menu, and now won't turn off. Does it need to be off before going in the box?

The repair it's going in for is the sleep/awake button not working. So im not sure if it's a matter of the button not working or the fact that the phone normally doesn't shut down when you're in the start up menu/setting up all your options (ex. language, country, etc..) Should i just put it in the box to send back with it turned on?

    Hi, kaboomer.
Thank you for the question.  You can send in your iPhone to our repair depot powered on.  We will proceed with evaluating your device once the unit is received.

The Find my iPhone service option is given to you when you first set up the device. If you just reset it, you may have been given that option. So, in other words, the service may have been enabled even if you didn't realize it. You can then go to www.icloud.com and click on Find my iPhone, and have it play a sound. Or, you can use the Find my iPhone app on your mom's iPhone, but the service would still need to be turned on on your iPod.
Unlike Compukid said, Apple will not assist in locating a lost device without the Find my iPhone service.
I found that out 2 years ago, it's just that I thought Apple might have changed that.

  • IPod won't turn off when plugged into computer! PLZ HLP!

I have an iPod touch 2g, and now whenever I connect it to iTunes, it won't turn off. It will just turn itself back on.

If you are unable to give specifics about the problem or what you need to do, it's going to be rather hard to give you recommendations or alternate suggestions.
As I said, if I recall correctly, the iPod will stay on if it's being charged. But, in case I'm misremembering, are you holding down the button until you see the red arrow that says "Slide to power off"? Have you tried restoring it?

  • The CRT won't come on and the computer won't turn off. ???

    Hi all,
I just got another free Rev. A iMac CRT today - it was in an old, abandoned school and the people who were moving everything out of the school thought it was dead, so they gave it to me. I tried starting it up, and it wouldn't turn on. When I took off the back to see if it had any good parts in it, it turned out everything was unplugged in the back, so I plugged it all back it. It worked great, I was deleting the school's files and apps so I could sell it, until a few minutes ago when I tried to wake it up from sleep. The display just wouldn't come on. I though it just wasn't waking up. I tried typing on the keyboard and clicking the mouse, and I finally pressed the power button on the keyboard, when I heard the normal beep it makes when you press the power button on the keyboard and it gives you the dialogue box "Do you wanna turn it off, restart it, etc?" I thought, "this is weird, why isn't the display on?" So I pressed the enter key, figuring that Turn Off was the option selected and that the display would come on when I turned it back on. Sure nuff, the computer turned off. I waited a few seconds and turned it back on. The display still wouldn't come on. I waited a few minutes til I was sure it was all the way booted up. It won't respond to the keyboard, the mouse, repeated jabs in the reset button on the side, or the power buttons on both the unit and the keyboard. I held down the power button for an entire minute and the display won't turn on and the computer won't turn off.
This is totally bizzare. Does anyone know how to a) turn on the display or b) turn off the computer? It's looking like I'm going to have to unplug it and try again later.
By the way, it's running 9.2.2, like the one in my signature line.

I finally pulled the plug and restarted and it's working fine now. Does anyone know what happened? I think it could've had something to do with the PRAM battery; every time I've started it up it's said the date is January 1956 and the time is 9:55. hmmm...
Edit: I just realized that in addition to the date being 1956, the hard drive was completely randomly renamed to "k hortdpc." ***???
Another edit: I just realized I probably renamed the hard drive in my frantic random clicking and typing - I probably accidentally clicked the hard drive name and randomly typed a new name in my attempts to wake up the computer. oops

  • K7N2 Delta ILSR won't turn off, just restarts

K7N2 Delta ILSR won't turn off, just restarts.  Every time I click on "Turn off computer" in Windows XP, it shuts down, but restarts again. Could this be OS related, or perhaps Bios related. My other machine, almost identical to this one, except that the other machine has BIOS rev 7.6 and this one 7.2.

PSUs seem to be yr favorite subject, but I'm afraid this time it's software. I experimented some more as the problem only occured after installing the Nvidia drivers. Comparing the system settings in the device manager before installing drivers and after installing them, reveils that the problem shows up when AGP HOST TO PCI BRIDGE is installed. When killing this item the PC shuts off properly. Unfortunately when turning back on, Windows automatically reinstalls the PCI bridge and I have the problem again. LOOKS LIKE A MSI SOFTWARE PROBLEM !
By the way I have a PCI graphics board and not AGP in the failing PC (the good one has AGP graphics).
    Now what?

  • My iPod Classic 160 is in disc mode and won't turn off, itunes doesn't recognize it - ¿how can I make it work again?

My iPod Classic 160 is in disc mode.  I responds to nothing.  iTunes doesn't recognize it.  It doesn't sync.  I've tried to restore and got error 1429.  Now it just stays in disc mode and won't turn off.  I'm keeping it connected to the charger so it doesn't go dead.  Is there anything I can do to resurrect my pod?

To get out of disk mode do a iPod Hard Reset.
Toggle the Hold switch till you dont see the red mark.
Press Menu and Center buttons simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple logo comes ON then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.

I accidentally dropped my friend's macbook air that was in a book bag. The keyboard is working because I can see the light but the screen is black and it won't turn off. How should I fix this? Please Help ME!!
I tried to turn it off and it didn't work... and I held on to the shift key too and it still doesn't work..
    Please help me..

Accidental damage is not covered under Apple warranty.  And it seems there is much accidental damage.  Only a Genius Bar tech looking at it can tell how much it will cost to repair.
Cost to repair will be high, I suspect (though Genius Bar will confirm/deny.
There is no gentle way to say this sir/ma'am ... someone will need to pay for your friend's MBA repairs.

  • I tried to update the software for my iPhone 4S. It froze, and now won't turn off, or on, or sync.  Any ideas on how to fix this?

I tried to update the software for my iPhone 4S, 16 GB to the most recent version (8.1?).  I don't know what I was updating from, because I can't access that, but it was whatever was installed on it (I got it about a year ago, so probably 6.something).
It froze, and now won't turn off, or on, or sync with my macbook plus, which is what I have always sync'd it to.  (I backed it up and sync'd it right before I tried to update the software.)
Since it originally froze almost 3 hours ago, it shows a white screen with the apple on it and a line underneath.  When I try to sync with my laptop, it says it needs me to enter a passcode on the phone, which I can't enter because the screen is frozen.  So I'm unable to access the iPhone portion of iTunes.
I have tried to turn it off, with no luck.  I have tried rebooting my laptop and syncing, but I still get the same result.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
I really wanted to wait to update the software, but I was having internet connectivity issues for the past 3 weeks, and Sprint suggested updating the phone's software.
Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi NWL1,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, the iPhone won't update and is stuck. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.

my ipad won"t turn off. there is a small window with an email text in it and it appears frozen on the screen. How can i turn the ipad off?

Try a reset: Simultaneously hold down the Home and On buttons until the device shuts down. Ignore the off slider if it appears. Once shut down is complete, if it doesn't restart on it own, turn the device back on using the On button. In some cases it also helps to double click the Home button and close all apps BEFORE doing the reset.

  • My ipod touch is disabled and won't turn off, itunes doesn't recognize the device and i can't see the serial number on the back

My NOSY (now ex) husband did something to my ipod touch and it is now disabled. It was dead and I charged it and NOW the sucker won't turn off. When I connect to itunes i see a message that says i have to UNLOCK it with a passcode. I tried to get apple support but they want my serial number. Well...the ipod wont turn on!!! I've had it at least 6 years and have moved and I can't find my paperwork and WHO can read that serial number on the back? I know its kind of outdated (third generation, I believe)but its mine, I love it and it has ALL my music on it.

    Disabled
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

  • HP Color Laserjet 3550 - the "attention" light won't turn off

I've tried everything I can think of for weeks but I can't get the "attention" light on my HP Color Laserjet 3550 to turn off.  It originally came on when a page on from the manual input tray got stuck maybe 20% of the way in.  It was a real easy fix,  I pulled the page out and now the "attention" light won't turn off.  So I can use the printer at all.  I've had this printer about a year. I purchased it used.  I've always had the manual feed tray as the default because I use this printer mostly for envelopes and less than 81/2 x11 printing as I have an old workhorse HP 4+ for all my straight 81/2 x 11 printing. I've rebooted. I've unhooked cables and the router.  I've opened up the printer and removed the casing (the plastic apparatus on the door)  and replaced it. The router is a 2Wire HomePortal 1800HG.  I'm just baffled here I've printed so much with the manual feed tray and I've had allot worse things happen that I've had to fix.  Now a simple stick like this and the light just wont' go off.

    HI Vern,
Where did you bought the printer? may you bought it from a different region than your current one?
What is the exact cartridge number of both the black and the tri-color ink cartridge, as well as their product number?
I bought the printyer in the US and the cartridges also came from the US,  probably no the same state.  Cartdridge # 97,  black # 96.  I don't see a product number.  This is the same # that was in the printer before and the same one I always used.   As soon as I pull it out the light goes out,  and on again as soon as I install it.  This is before the printer even cycles through it's "new cartdridge" routine,  if you know what I mean.
