FileVault

Hi everyone!
I'm a new member in the Apple-family, using both a iPhone 4 and my totaly new macbook Pro 13". I want to protect my personal information and what I have understand all personal information on a Mac is stored in the Home folder for the account if not specificly changing that, (mostly in the ~/Library/... folders). Is that correct?
I was thinking of using the filevault application and I turned it on to try it. First of all, do anyone have any experience with filevault, do you like it or dislike it? Pro and cons?
I do not need a superhightech encryption or something like that, I just don't want my personal information to be stored totaly unprotected in the case of loss of the computer.
And what I have understand so is AES with a keysize of 128 bits used in filevault which (if implemented in a correct way with a secure passphrase) should be more than enough for me.
But what do you guys prefer to use on mac? I used truecrypt disk encryption on my old PC but I heared that it was not that good on Mac, or?
The last question I have is this, I turned filevault on and it works like it should. It has securely cleaned the old folder after and all this seems to work. But now is it showing that my harddrive is 640GB large and not only 320GB that it really is. But it says that 320GB of it is occupied. So the total amount of free disk space is correct anyway. I just wonder if it should be like this or has something gone wrong?
I'm thankfull for any advices and explainations I can get!
Thanks in advanced!

Another question while I'm on it.
I have been looking around for a way of encrypt personal folders as well. Since both friends and girlfriend borrows my computer when they visits me I want to be able to make some folder unaccessable for them and put my very private files there.
And I have read about the espionage application and it looks like the thing I need.
Anyone have any experience about this? Pro and cons? Other recommendations?
And please excuse my bad english! :/

  • Recovery from FileVault backup disk

I have a friend who had Filevault active and suspected it was causing problems so he disabled it following the instructions to the letter. After working for over an hour, it said it was done and when he restarted it would not boot. He took it to the local Apple store for "recovery" but it appears that all that was done was to erase the drive and reinstall the OS. He has a Lacie drive that he kept a backup on but it appears not to have a user folder for his account. Is it encrypted and therefore invisible? If so, what can be done to recover the data?

Boot from the LaCie, assuming that his backup is bootable. that should allow the user's folder to decrypt. Once that's finished, then drag & drop the user's folder onto the Mac Book's User folder. Finally, do a search for file vault or filevault, review the postings, and decide whether or not to ever reenable it.

  • Can't copy some files from FileVault Sparsebundle in Time Machine backup

I've got filevault turned on for my mac Mac Mini (10.6.2). I'm using Time Machine to back up to a firewire drive. There's plenty of space - my Mini hd has 250 Gb of 500 used, and I'm backing up to a 750Gb partition on the external drive. The initial backup went OK, and when I logged out it backed up my filevault-protected home directory. When I logged back in, I was able to browse the Backups.backupdb on the external drive, go to the users directory, and open the sparsebundle that was my filevault-protected home directory (after entering the password). I can browse through this backup of my home directory. However, when I try copying files from the backup of the home directory, I get an error:
The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "(filename)" can't be read or written. (Error code -36).
I get this error for some files, but not all of them. I've tried running BatChmod to reset permissions on all files in my home directory, and then erasing the backup drive and having Time Machine recreate the backup. However I'm still having this problem.
I have also tried restoring the entire hard drive (to a 3rd external HD) by booting from the 10.6 DVD and going through the full-restore process. All of my files are fine when I restore using this method.
Is there something I should do so that I can restore individual files from the backup of my filevault sparsebundle? It is extremly inconvenient to have to do a full hard drive restore if all I want is a file or two, and of course if the motherboard on my mini dies and I can't get a close enough replacement computer, then I could really be up a creek.
    Thanks,

Don't try to restore files individually by hand using finder. TM backups are protected by very restrictive ACLs and are not designed to be accessed that way.
you can restore the whole sparse bundle with the home directory from TM interface. you should be logged in as a different user when you do this. the easiest is to be logged in as root so as not to deal with any permissions issues.
another thing you might try is doing it from command line instead of finder. this is also not the designed way but might work where finder copy doesn't.
to do this run the following terminal command after you mount the sparse bundle with backups of the home directory
    ditto --noacl path/to/source/file /path/to/target/directory
here path/to/source file is the path to the file in the sparse bundle you want to restore and path/to target directory is the path to the folder where you want to copy it to. an easy way to get the path to an item is to drag that item to the terminal window. make sure that you have all the spaces correctly in the command.
It is extremly inconvenient to have to do a full hard drive restore if all I want is a file or two, and of course if the motherboard on my mini dies and I can't get a close enough replacement computer, then I could really be up a creek.

A security feature of OSX. It encrypts your entire home folder.
See: [Mac OS X 10.6 Help: About FileVault|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8727.html]

  • Unable to log in due to FileVault error

    1) I am just more capable with computer issues than a cave-dwelling Luddite so I will apologize in advance as I'm sure the problem is my fault & I am desperate.
    2) I am the only account on my computer & I have admin privileges
    3) I'm sorry if I ramble but I want to make sure I give enough info to tailor this question to my specific problem
In 2008, My MBP came with Snow Leopard.  I'm almost positive I created my account with the account name & short name Chocolime. I have since changed the account name (the name I use for my HD icon & the name that appears next to my house icon) to Psychosquint. I am not computer savvy but I am OCD & have to click on all settings & preferences to see what I can do (this is my first Apple product). I obviously turned FileVault on.
I'm not sure when or why (even tho based on other posts, it's an encryption/decryption thing!?)...but I noticed that my HD was almost at full capacity (320gb) but all I use my computer for is web surfing & iTunes (max 100gb of media). I feel like I noticed this when I downloaded the Lion upgrade to my computer from the apple store. At some point I noticed in System Preferences, that now I have Legacy FV & FV. I turned FV on.
I started having to restart my computer anytime I deleted a significant amount of trash in order for my computer to show the correct space available (the amount shown when I right click my HD icon (the only icon on my screen) and select get info
I turned FV off, but was told I needed 245gb of space to turn off Legacy FV. I have to continually manage the media on my computer to have 10gb available for use, so Legacy FV is still on
Over the years, I notice that altho my user name is now Psychosquint, sometimes I would see a path file?! that always still had username chocolime (e.g. when shown where a file would download to. So I had the brilliant idea to fix this. I search this forum & found that I could go to System Preferences--Users, right click my name and change chocolime to psychosquint. I did that in both lines where chocolime was the name. I was prompted that changing this could mess up something if the name didn't match my home folder name or something, but I'm the only user & I checked that my folder was labelled psychosquint (all lowercase) & I clicked ok. I was told that I had to restart my computer to take effect & BLAMMO...now I can't log in
Started up in recovery mode. Reinstalled Lion, no change
Started up in recovery mode. Used Disk Utility to repair disk, got a green message that all was ok. Now am in the process of reinstalling Lion again (I know the definition of crazy is doing things over & over expecting different results  )
So I would just find someone to wipe my computer & start from new as I don't have any programs installed that couldn't be re-downloaded but.....wait for it....here's my second conundrum:
I have an app call Quickreader.  Within iTunes, when my ipad mini is plugged in so the apps tab is available, of you scroll down...this app shows up in File Sharing (I think that's the name). It's the place where you can add files.  I've got thousands of books saved. I would like to be able to save them to an external HD if I can.
I also have an app called Comic Zeal. It's a digital comic book reader. I have approx. 40gb of comics saved here...but not on my HD. In File Sharing, my comics are stored in a blue folder (it's just there, I didn't make it) as one huge file. They import individually but then just automatically get absorbed into this blue folder icon that gets bigger or smaller as I add or delete comics from my mini. I can't save to an external HD as I get an error that I'm timed out. I would somehow like to salvage these as well.
Is there a way to back up an iTunes backup to an external HD to keep these internal files? When I looked in Finder to see the size of iTunes, it says 44gb. This doesn't seem right as the comics take up approx. 40gb on my mini & I have approx. 30gb more used for music, movies & apps.
I'm sure I've completely confused you guys & you're probably laughing, sneering, jeering, etc at me for playing in the deep end of the pool within knowing how to swim, but I'm drowning & I would greatly appreciate any lifelines you could throw me!!!

  • How to log into Mountain Lion if the FileVault user can't unlock the drive?

I have a computer that has the FileVault user not able to decrypt the drive. I've read on how to get into the machine and have successfully done so a few times. This has been accomplished by creating a new Admin user, deleting the original user, recreating it as a clean new user. Each time I give the computer back to the owner and he tries to restore from a backup. The problem is, he restores and it creates the same problem.
The most recent time he did this, I could not for the life of me figure out how to create a new user. When I try to log in as the FileVault user I get the "unable to log into filevault user account at this time" error.
The only way I could figure out how to get another admin user created so that I could delete his user was to reinstall the OS. Is that the only way this can be done?

I don't think Verizon will release the username and password to the camera administration to prevent people from doing what you want to do.
Even if you have the username / password, I would imagine there is a hefty equipment charge if you don't return the camera, which will make it cheaper to just buy a camera in retail stores.

  • A Tale of a Filevault Disaster and Recovery...

Recently, one of my customers had a major disaster with their MacBook running 10.5.8:
It all started when they decided they needed to free up some disk space on the internal drive, and thus they began to trash a large number of files to accomplish this.
Apparently in doing so, they must have trashed some key files because they managed to permanently lock themselves out of their Filevault-encrypted Home folder; the filevault password no longer worked when they attempted to log back in after a restart, and after numerous unsuccessful login attempts, they received the message "your filevault-protected home folder did not open and needs to be repaired. Click OK to repair the folder.." Clicking OK did nothing, and at that point they requested my services.
Turns out also, they had no recent backup; the last backup was over 2 years old- they had misplaced the power cable for their Time Machine backup drive- a WD MyBook- and had never replaced it... (oye vay)
When I got the machine, I used the installer cd to create a root user and look at the internal drive's status- 53G of 233G used. Over the course of several days, I took the following actions:
    1. Restarted and logged in as root, I attempted to open the user's sparsebundle with no success.
    2. Restarted to the installer CD and ran Disk Utility's Repair Disk which returned no errors. Attempted to Repair Permissions but got no result appearing to hang..
    3. Figuring "Ok, I can't open the sparsebundle yet, so I'll at least start improving the overall health of the file system"- I started up the MB in Target Disk Mode connected to my G5 Quad running 10.5.7. From my G5, I used DU and Diskwarrior against the MB's single volume internal drive. DU returned no errors but Diskwarrior returned problems in red on a directory rebuild, so I repeated with Diskwarrior until all was green (3x).
    4. After this, tried again to open the user's sparsebundle with same negative result of the password not working.
    5. At this point, running out of solutions but anticipating eventual success (against all odds) I copied the sparsebundle to a spare drive as a backup.
    6. Did a Google search and eventually found an archived Apple discussions thread which seemed to indicate a possible solution:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5881960
To make a long story a bit shorter, what eventually totally saved my bacon was this info in a post by GuyEWhite in the archived thread:
<<< So Guy, if you're out there- A MILLION Thanks!! >>>
    7. Type: sudo hdiutil attach /Users/username/username.sparseimage -nomount
    8. A bunch of funky things will happen, but it eventually should list a number of volumes, one with an HFS attached to it, note if it says disk1s1 or disk2s2 or whatever.
    9. Type: sudo fsck_hfs -f /dev/rdisk2s2 (rdisk2s2 being where the HFS was from step 8, adding an "r" at the front)
If fsck_hfs bails because of too many errors, just repeat until it says the FS is fine. That irks the bejeezus out of me as well, but has always worked for me so far.
    7. Still in TDM, and working on the backup copy, I used the above commands to first "see" the sparsebundle volume, and then to run fsck against it. Sure enough, my results were similar to the above: major errors returned the first 3 or 4 times I ran it, then eventually it said the FS was OK, and then VOILA! My first success- the sparsebundle volume actually mounted in Disk Utility and Diskwarrior, both of which were running in the background.
    8. The Filevault password now worked, and I ran Diskwarrior's "Rebuild Directory" multiple times against the mounted sparsebundle volume. Numerous errors were evident and Diskwarrior created a "Rescued Items" folder.
Obviously, whatever the client had done did a major FUBAR to her home folder. Eventually the number of errors in red was reduced to a point where it would not reduce further. About 1G of data appeared to be in the Filevaulted Home folder. This didn't square with the supposed size of the sparsebundle, but I left that issue hanging for the moment.
    9. I repeated the command line procedure against the MB's internal drive- successfully mounting and decrypting the Filevaulted Home folder. Similar results were obtained where it took multiple passes of fsck to mount the disk, then a number of passes of Diskwarrior to repair the directory as much as possible.
    10. Knowing that I had rescued at least some of the client's files, and that I had a "repaired" backup of the sparsebundle- I decided at this point to wipe the MB's interal drive and do a complete re-install of the system and all software updates- knowing I would be eventually transferring her user files back over.
    11. Back to the discrepancy of visible files in the mounted sparsebundle:
I decided to get out the howitzers and use Data Rescue.
A "deleted files" scan found another 28G of actual user files!
    12. The task of organizing and transferring the user files back over to the MacBook was pretty labor-intensive but ultimately pretty successful for the most part; there were however a significant number of corrupted files which could not be salvaged. These mostly included user prefs, some Pages documents, and some images. Most all of her music and movies were still intact.
At first I tried repairing some of the corrupt image files by using Graphic Converter to re-save images that Photoshop otherwise couldn't open. This proved to be incredibly tedious and instead, I simply imported all the images en masse into iPhoto. iPhoto very nicely refused import of all the corrupted images (something like a couple hundred out of multiple thousands).
The end result was quite satisfactory: I got the client a new power cable for their MyBook and a did a complete Time Machine backup to it. They were quite happy since I had recovered just about all their documents, music, movies, and photos...
But without finding that post and method by GuyEWhite, the outcome probably would have been far different, so again- thanks Guy!

This is the single most useful entry for FileVault problems I ever encountered! Thanks a lot!
Just a few notes to add:
    (1) Use this to access your FileVault image:
sudo hdiutil attach -nomount -readwrite -noautofsck -noverify /Users/(username)/(username).sparsebundle
Reminder: "(username)" is your short username. This will prevent Snow Leopard from traing to repair while accessing the FileVault bundle.
If your computer crashed your sparsebundle will be at "/Users/.(username)/(username).sparsebundle", not at "/Users/(username)/(username).sparsebundle", the difference is the "." in the folder name!
    (2) After repairing with fsck_hfs you should detach the sparse bundle again:
    hdiutil detach /dev/diskX
where "X" can be anything from 0 to whatever, matching the output after the "hdiutil attach" command.
    Beswt,
    Apple*

I found your post based on searching for this weird message in my Console.... I have Mavericks running OK.. (besides lame slow Safari launch of new blank pages etc.)... so not able to help with your issue. But here is what I found in common with your logs:
Disk Utility[487]: 10.4-style NSNumberFormatter method called on a 10.0-style formatter, which doesn't work. Break on _NSNumberFormatter_Log_New_Methods_On_Old_Formatters to debug. This message will only be logged once.
One would expect Apple to know what methods are defunct in its own OS and code when writing its own apps.

  • Question regarding filevault and a honeypot account

I am running osx lion.  I would like to secure my machine, and that includes basics like good passwords and turning on a firmware password.  But I would also like to encrypt the contents of the hard drive.  Filevault to the rescue it would seem.
But I also have one more requirement.
Since a lot of my equipment was stolen last year I have installed prey on all of my new computers (www.preyproject.com).  This allows me to track my machines and potentially get them recovered should they go missing.  Prey is useless unless there is a user logged in and so I have created a honeypot account that is minimally protected (i.e. the password is the user name and the password hint explicitly tells you what the password is).  This account has parental controls on it to limit the applications that can be run (only web browser, some games, and skype).  The idea is that a dumb thief steals my computer, finds it easy to log into the honeypot account, and then uses that with their facebook or whatever because getting past the open firmware settings and the individual "real" account passwords is too hard.
That said, having this software is no guarantee that I will be able to recover my machine, so I want my data encrypted.
    Here is my question:
Does the fact that I have to add this simple password for the honeypot account to use the computer (aka open a filevault drive) invalidate my filevault protection?  I.e. will this simple password allow them to unencrypt the entire drive, even though I have other accounts with stronger passwords?

The guest account might be just good enough...  I'll give it a try.  Thanks.  Prey seems to work pretty well for me but it has also been touchy in the past.  I will have to check it carefully with the guest account to ensure it has the permissions needed to use the webcam and send email and such.
I'm still interested in knowing how filevault encryption works.  Does it allow any of the passwords to unencrypt the whole drive, or does it require a unique password per account to unencrypt the data in that account?
Edit:  Just saw the repy by Linc Davis
"If everything worked perfectly, the account would only have access to the files in its home folder. But is there an unknown exploit that enables a local user to gain elevated privileges? Such exploits have been found in the past, and may be found in the future."
That clears it up for me a bit.  And it makes sense.  I will see if I can make do with the guest account.
That said, I actually value the computer hardware - though not as much as the data.  I already back the data up which is the first step.  Preventing others from accessing it is my next priority, but there is nothing that is THAT critical.  I can change all my passwords quickly (and I don't use anything like 1password).  I have tax returns on the drive, but they are also password protected.
My primary goal is to keep the average and even slightly above average user from getting to my data (including yanking the drive and putting it into another machine or booting from a CD).  As I said, I hope the guest account will be adequate for my honeypot needs.
    Also @Linc,
I accidentally clicked on "Helpful" instead of "Answered" on your post.  Post a reply and I will do it right this time.  Thanks.

  • I restored my Macbook Pro and now I can't log in as Admin - it says there is an error with FileVault and I don't have access - plz help!  thank you.

I had to restore my Macbook Pro from Time Capsule yesterday and now when I go to log in as my usual Admin, it says there is a FileVault error and my access is denied.  I created another temporary Admin acct, but everything I had on my desktop, etc is "gone"  I can look up the "drive' or wahtever it's called, but I can't access any of it.  All I want to do is log back in as my usual self (the regular Admin) - plz help!  Thanks.   p.s. I"m (obviously) not that computer savvy!

Triple-click the line below to select it:
    /System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app
Rght-click or control-click the highlighted text and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* The application Directory Utility will open.
In the Directory Utility window, click the lock icon and authenticate. Select the Directory Editor tool in the toolbar. Select Users from the Viewing menu in the toolbar, if not already selected. Select the affected user account in the list. On the right is a list of properties and values. Select the property "HomeDirectory" and delete it by clicking the minus-sign icon directly below the property list. There are two such icons in the window. You want the one on the right, not the one on the left.
CAUTION: Do not click the minus-sign icon on the left, below the user list.
Then click the Save button in the lower right corner of the window. Quit Directory Utility.
CAUTION: There is no "undo" in Directory Utility. If you make a mistake and delete something in the Directory Editor that should not have been deleted, restore your whole system from a backup and start over. I have no other help to offer in that case.
Try again to log in as the affected user. If you can log in, you should find a file in the home folder with the name of the user and the filename extension "sparseimage" or "sparsebundle". Double-click that file. A disk image should open. Copy your files from that disk image to restore them.
I strongly suggest that you deactivate legacy FileVault in the Security & Privacy preference pane, then log out and log back in. Consider activating FileVault 2 if you want that kind of security.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). Open a TextEdit window and paste into it (command-V). Select the line you just pasted and continue as above.

  • Does not hibernate completely void the meaning of filevault?

    Hi,
A though about encryption and mac os sleep modes. In leopard under some
circumstances (depending on settings and so on) the contents of RAM is
written to /var/vm/sleepimage (pmset -g), either to save battery power
or to prevent loss of data when battery is about to run out when already suspended/sleeping.
I was under the impression that when using encrypted swap, this hibernation image would also be encrypted with the users password, but I made some tests and this seems not to be the case. After hibernate and restart, the memory is restored and the running programs restarted, disk images mounted etc, without any need for the user to give a password (independently of auto-login). So - it seems all what is needed to read the cleartext data is saved on disk (or RAM?)
I found some info on the web about the different sleep modes, and I though that could be the problem. It turned out I had sleep mode 5, which means means cleartext sleepimage (I verified this - my mails are there...), but with mode 3 or 1, the image is encrypted but apparently the encryption key/password is also stored?
I think most users don't realize this ... what good is filevault or other encrypted images if the application data and open user sessions (with mounted filesystems) are stored to disk together with the key?
Many users may not even know about the hibernate feature and are not given an option to disable it. Afaik the image is quietly written, automatically (at least) when battery is running out.
Please tell me I got it all wrong - this seems to bad to be true. If someone has some details on what keys are used for the encrypted swap and hibernate it would be very interesting. In linux the typical solution (I always did this myself) is to have random new keys generated at each boot for the swap file, and a user prompt for decrypting the hibernation file.
    cheers, Johan
    somewhat related; http://db.tidbits.com/article/9115

    just some details; (man pmset)
0001 (bit 0) enables hibernation; causes OS X to write memory state to hibernation image at sleep time. On
wake (without bit 1 set) OS X will resume from the hibernation image. Bit 0 set (without bit 1 set) causes
OS X to write memory state and immediately hibernate at sleep time.
0010 (bit 1), in conjunction with bit 0, causes OS X to maintain system state in memory and leave system
power on until battery level drops below a near empty threshold (This enables quicker wakeup from memory
while battery power is available). Upon nearly emptying the battery, OS X shuts off all system power and
hibernates; on wake the system will resume from hibernation image, not from memory.
hibernatemode is set to 3 (binary 0011) by default on supported portables.
Ironically, hibernate is also called 'Safe sleep'
    mode 0 means off

  • Issue with logging in to my FileVault account

    Hi,
I recently turned on FileVault for my account on my MacBook with OSX 10.6.7. Since then I have problems logging in to my account. After I insert my login information, it's loading my background, the top bar, sometimes the dock and it freezes. The only option is to shut down from the power button, then restart and then it works. This happens every time I turn off my computer and FileVault cleans and restores the free space.
I tried to clean up the login apps and reduced them to only 2 or 3 apps. After doing this, I manege to open my Mac without having to restart from power button and I thought that the problem was solved, but today It didn't log in. I manage to log in after a restart from the home button and now I see that some of my settings are gone (the dock is at a default state, same with Mail and spaces).
Please tell me what should I do.
    Thanks,
    Mihai

Rather doubt it's a FB issue as I'm not having any issues at all.
Check Safari > Preferences > Extensions
If there are any installed, turn that off, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If installed, temporarily disable anti virus softare.
Apps such as Little Snitch, Net Nanny, and Hands Off can cause issues with Facebook
If nothing above applies, install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo
That reinstalls any missing system files.
Restart your Mac after the combo is installed. It's ok to do this even though v10.6.8 is already installed.

  • Old FileVault crashed my MacBook Pro, had to delete, reinstall and Time Machine restore failed. Trying to manually rebuild. No iPhoto pics, no iTunes music and NO DOCUMENTS found! Any thoughts?

Here's the ordeal. I'm running a 2007 MacBook Pro 17 inch with Lion OS. When I converted to Lion, I didn't have enough room on my harddrive to convert to the new FileVault, so I remained on the old system. Less than a week ago I reboot my computer because iPhoto seems to be stuck on "cataloging" my photos, though after days of letting it run, it doesn't do anything. After the reboot, my computer appears as if it had been reset to factory settings with all my programs gone, etc. I'm like, hey, I've got Time Machine, I'll restore it. After the restore is run, when I go to login, I get the dreadful error message, "You are unable to log into the FileVault user "John" at this time. Logging into the account failed because an error occurred". I searched the internet via my iPhone for suggestions and followed everyone of them, all the way down to erasing my harddrive and reinstalling Lion. So I get back into my computer and think I'm golden. I go to restore my computer via Time Machine and wham....I'm right back to that error message. I think, ok, I'll do it again. This time it messes us even more, giving me two login screens, one for the new Lion like before I restored the computer and then a second, as if it were restored, but unable to login. On top of that, I couldn't get back to the Command-R page! I thought I was really screwed! Well, I finally figured a way back, or maybe it was just that it finally decided to cooperate, I don't know, but I erased my harddrive again, and reinstalled again and thought, well, I'll rebuild manually by selecting what I want to restore from the Time Machine drive. I was able to get all my applications back and running, but to my dismay, I seemingly have lost all my iTunes music (except that which Apple has graciously setup to redownload now "thank you!) plus all my iPhoto's and even worse, all my DOCUMENTS!!!! Here I thought Time Machine from backing all this stuff up, but with over a years worth of back-ups I cannot locate any photos, music, or my documents on my drive to extract! Needless to say, I will never be using Time Machine again to back up my computer, I'll find another program or at least do it all manually. But my question is: am I looking in the wrong places for this files? Are they hidden under some unknowning folder that doesn't list it as music, photos or files? I can manage with the music, I can live with the photos because my wife has many of them on her computer and I have many uploaded to Facebook, but my files! My documents, thousands of them, many with information I won't be able to compile again, seemingly gone unless someone out there has any ideas?!!!
I even had iPhoto search the drive for photos and after hours of the barber shop pole spinning I cancelled the command for I figured it wasn't going to find anything.
If anyone has any suggestions, or if Apple, you are reading this and can provide some direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

Also - my battery has been telling me "service battery" for a LONG time and then it switched to "replace soon" som time ago. Can't really see what this has to do with anything but whatever.
That could conceivably explain all the problems you're describing. Replacing a Mac's battery should not be postponed since a failed battery will cause other problems to occur. It is also possible that its hard disk has failed, which means the information on it may soon become unrecoverable.
... my latest TM back up was from April 2014, can I just run this when I have rescued everthing and then it might not be as slow?
If that Time Machine backup remains intact, it may be the only viable means of recovering that Mac's information. I suggest you do not attempt to restore its contents to your ailing Mac.
Given that you are having trouble creating a newer Time Machine backup you should stop using that Mac immediately and have it serviced as soon as you are able. Do not take it to anyone other than Apple or a service facility authorized by Apple, for the very reasons you explained. If there are no Apple Stores in your vicinity search for an Authorized Apple Service Provider using the Contact Us link below. Use one of the options that appear under Contact Apple Support. The language on that page will be different for your location.

  • I'm having a problem with logging into a FileVault-protected user account after restoring from Time Machine backup.

    Hi all,
My computer had been running really slowly for a while, so I decided to erase the whole hard drive and reinstall the operating system, and then I was going to restore the files I cared about from Time Machine. The main account, which had all my documents and photos, was FileVault-protected. The last thing I did before erasing the hard drive was to run one last Time Machine backup. As far as I remember, I always ran Time Machine backups with the FileVaulted user logged in.
I don't remember whether I was using FileVault 1 or 2. I had been using FileVault 1, but I installed Lion as soon as it came out and I thought I had migrated to FileVault 2 at that point.
Once I erased the hard drive and reinstalled the operating system, I browsed the Time Machine disk and, within the Users folder, there was no folder for the main user account. When I tried to reinstall everything by restoring from Time Machine backup, I'd get the option for all the user accounts, but when I tried to log in with the main one I'd get the dreaded "You are unable to log in to the FileVault user account "User" at this time. Log in failed because an error occurred." Finally, when attempting to restore from the Time Machine backup again, I noticed something strange: After the computer got to about 10% done restoring, it declared itself completed successfully and rebooted.
I've tried a number of tips that came up from questions about similar issues on the Apple support forum, but had no luck. Is there any way to get these files back? Did they ever even get backed up?
    Thanks.

I can't find it! not sure what's going on but the only folder shown is the " Shared" folder.
Did you have only the one user account? If there were others, they should also be in the "Users" folder. You probably won't have access to the files inside them, but they should be there.
From what can make out, it looks like it's not backed up any of the files for the filevault account. Can't see user folder when looking through previous backups in Time Machine galaxy view.
Are you doing that from a Finder window set to your internal HD, or your computer name? It should look something like this (with the Finder in List view):

I'd been logging out and backing up manually on a regular basis.
Scheduled backups should run normally; but they won't back up the File Vault sparse bundle, nor will any run manually.
The only time it's backed-up is when you actually log out.
You should have seen this window on logout:

  • FileVault Bug, requires you to log in twice.

So I'm sitting here and wondering.... am I the ONLY person who is using FileVault in the new Lion? or am I the only one who's having these problems, but here's the scenario. Last week I purchased a brand new 2011 Macbook Air with the i7 Processor, and 256GB SSD drive... All excited, bring it home and start to set it up for work, and then all of a sudden it starts acting strange.
    Symptoms:
Upon initial boot up, or system restart, you are presented with the login screen, but after you enter in your password and hit enter, it just sits there for a while spinning the wheel, and then just out of the blue decides it wants to reboot all by itself, comes back up and then presents you with the login page again. At which time the second time, and ONLY the second time, it accepts your login, and presents you with your desktop, and everything runs fine from them on.
When this started happening the first time, I was completely lost and tried every troubleshooting step in the books to try to figure it out. I disabled all startup items in the user profile thinking that might have something to do with it. Nope, no luck. I tried the Comand + alt + P + R key stroke to clear out the system, Nope, no luck.
I went out and paid $69 for a USB Key with Lion on it so that I could reinstall the OS without having to wait 3 hours for it to download, which is funny considering I'm supposed to already be licensed for it with the Macbook Air, but thats another gripe for another post. Then I begin installing one thing at a time and rebooting to find out what may have caused the problem.
I finished installing all of the apps I need, and everything was still running right, and then I was like cool, it must have just been a glitch, and I enabled FileVault, rebooted the comuter, it came up fine and then after it was done encrypting I installed eset cybersecurity for Mac. I know I know, Mac's don't need virus scanners, but its required for my job, and I really don't have a choice, that and the disk encryption.
So once the virus scanner was installed, I began copying my personal files and documents from my external drive to the Macbook Air, and decided to do another reboot just in case, and low and behold, the problem was back... Enter password the first time, and the system reboots, but the second time it lets you log in.
At this point I'm pretty pieved, so I take the Macbook Air back and buy a 13" Macbook pro with the i7 processor, 8GB of memory, and 500GB standard hard drive. Well to cut a long story short, I had the same problems with this system, until I finally found out that the reason why all of this was happening was because:
    A. I had FileVault enabled
    B. I had copied files to the device that were previously on another Mac device.
I have no idea why it does it, but it appears as though when you enable FileVault, you're fine as long as you dont copy anything from an old computer onto it, because when you do all of a suddedn you're presented with the problem. Oh and if FileVault isnt enabled, you dont have the problem either. Ever.
So there is a bug in FileVault which is by itself not that big of a deal and not a very bad bug... heck all it seems to affect is your ability to login the first time, or at least thats all I've found, but what on earth happened with Apple. Ever since Jobs has taken his leave of absence everything has been going downhill.
Apple's HUGE advantage over Microsoft and every other operating system has always been that with apple, everything JUST WORKS. But unfortunately, I have to say that Lion has been the biggest piece of junk released by Apple in a LONG time. It has more bugs with it than you can shake 10,000 sticks at, and the more I use Lion, the more I find problems with it. What the **** is going on? With Winblows, I had to deal with little issues all the freaking time, like every single day. You'd have the wonkiest of things happening like you install a new app and when you reboot your desktop is all messed up, and when you wake the computer up from sleep, you cant login, or stupid things like that. So I ALWAYS found refuge in my Mac, and I always used to say well I don't have to worry about that.
Now with Lion... I have all the same problems a Winblows machine does. When I open the lid, I have to wonder if its actually going to wake up, or just provide me with a blank screen and force me to do a hard reboot. Or if I launch Safari, and it just doesn't want to open up the home page, or the fact that in the middle of transfering a file, or streaming music, all of a sudden my wireless link drops, but it doesn't actually tell you that you have no wireless link, and yes, it STILL happens even after the 10.7.1 update, even though that was supposed to have addressed this issue specifically.
I hate to say this, but Microsoft must have a fairy godmother or something, because they are **** lucky Steve Jobs resigned as CEO, because he seems to be the ONLY one at Apple who had the required attention to detail that seperated them from everyone else, and I'm scared that Apple is going to be yet another company now that releases products with buggs in it, and oh well, you just have to accept that as a part of life. I DONT want Apple to be the first with everything. I could care less if I have to wait for a new technology to be incorporated into the OS. I don't want them to be the first with a new interface like lion, or to combine OS X and IOS into a single cohesive echosystem. I just want them to be the BEST. I will wait an extra 6 months if I know its going to be the best way to do it, and that its not going to be riddled with bugs because they're rushing to get it out.
I'm VERY dissapointed Apple.... Because if this continues, I won't be an Apple user anymore, beacuse it will be cheaper to buy a PC, so what if it has bugs, so does Lion, so I may as well save my money.

Are you using Parallels Desktop 7?
    http://forum.parallels.com/showthread.php?t=113543

  • I am trying to authenticate at Filevault preboot using external Serial (RS232) to USB convertor where USB port is connected to my mac machine. But on preboot I am not able to type the password using console where my machine is connected.

I am using an external keyboard which is actually a Device KeyAT who do the keyboard simulator kind of operation over Serial (RS232) to USB connector.
I have a controller machine connected with Serial Port and MAC machine is connected by a USB port to that device.
I am able to type the password on OS X login screen but on using the same device and set up on Filevault preboot I am not able to type the password.
This connector is detected as a USB 2.0 composite device in System Hardware table.
Can someone hints or point out a potential cause or to rectify this issue.
    Thanks in Advance.
