FileVault1 TimeMachine and Lion

For a long time I didn't care about my TimeMachine setup because it "just worked", at least the last time I looked. Now I am unable to find old data in my time machine backup.
I am using FileVault to protect my home directory (I do not want do go to Full disk encryption if it can be avoided). Some time ago (at least with Leopard and Snow Leopard, cannot remember if with Lion, too) TIme Machine would back up my Filevault sparsebundle when logging out - it does not do this anymore. Also deleted Data in the Filevault sparsebundle doest not get freed after a reboot anymore, aparrently.
If FileVault 1 defunct in OS X Lion? Do I really need to go to FileVault 2 to have working backups anymore? Or is there some secret switch to reactivate backup of FV1? After all, the only data relevant to me is in the filevault container - I do not care about encrypting or backing up the OS and Applications.

Why not?  It's a vast improvement (I can't imagine why Apple kept the name).

Do you get any messages?  Sounds like there's a problem, like damage to the encrypted sparse bundle.

Another reason to suspect corruption.
If FileVault 1 defunct in OS X Lion?
It was "iffy" on Leopard and Snow Leopard.  Same in Lion.  It was highly recommended to decrypt before upgrading to Lion, then use File Vault 2.
Do I really need to go to FileVault 2 to have working backups anymore?
It's much better.  Backups work normally, just as with a normal installation -- all changes are backed-up hourly, and you can see and restore selected items from your home folder.  As I understand it, once the whole drive is encrypted (long process, of course), there's very little performance degradation.
Or is there some secret switch to reactivate backup of FV1?
If the disk image is corrupted, and can be fixed, maybe.
After all, the only data relevant to me is in the filevault container - I do not care about encrypting or backing up the OS and Applications.
Yes, you do.  If something awful happens (or has already happened), you're in a major pickle:  a very tedious process to recover your stuff.  In many cases, however, the sparse bundle can't be repaired, so is lost forever.  Also see the pink box in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #11.
Via the Finder, open your internal HD, and drill down to the Users folder and locate the sparsebundle for the encrypted user account, something like this:
Leave that on the screen and start Disk Utility (in Applications/Utilities).
Drag the sparsebundle to Disk Utility's sidebar.  That may take a few moments.  Click First Aid in the toolbar, then Repair Disk.   If no messages appear in the center of DU's window, select Window > Show log from the menubar.
Good luck, and keep us posted on the results.

Since installing Snow Leopard and then Lion on my Intel-based iMac two weeks ago, my iTunes program seems to open at will whenever the computer is on.   It often begins playing music, as well.  What is causing this and how do I make it stop?

There are ways to minimize, mitigate, and help avoid a lot of problems.
    Bootable backups.
Zeroing a drive twice before using, and format it with SL DVD Apple Disk Utility for sure.
Even a clean install should import old apps without having to reauthorize.
If you must do an upgrade, do it from the SL DVD, after repairing the drive and be sure to use the SL version of Alsoft Disk Warrior (4.2).
Wait six months before jumping on a new OS.
10% is still too many. Yes, it is more sensitive to RAM and hard drive errors, doesn't like some controllers; most ext hdd cases; and enough software to make for test-only status. And it only IDs some known incompatible applications, drivers, extensions, etc and does not remove even those always in best manner.
Plus, there are problems with the new Rosetta and the cache files it now uses. So some apps and plug-ins will cause more trouble. Not all are ready. Good reason to hold off for the months it takes.
Other devices act different as far as on/off behavior.
(Migrating from G5s to Mac Pro can cause all kinds of problems, weird behavior, sluggish system, and why anyone that went down that road was strongly recommended to NOT use Migration Assistant for any of their applications, and to ONLY do clean/fresh installs of any apps. If you skipped that day, didn't read the Guide to M.A., or didn't want to do fresh installs then, your system could have been on borrowed time. If you did do clean install of applications, great.
Installing SL can result in a corrupt directory - I think and it "seems" to be happening, but no real proof, just gut feeling and instinct (underlying file system problem? weak sectors that pre-existed waiting to happen?).
Remember all the "there just aren't a lot of 64-bit drivers" for Vista and XP? it's come home to roost.
... my guess is not enough incense and offerings. To hop into TimeMachine and SuperDuper backup images and pull the 1TB for another day (week, month, year).

  • AEBS and Lion Server DHCP

    Hi All!
I have a scenario I want some input on.
1 Mac Mini Lion Server 10.7.2
    1 TC 2nd Gen
    x iPads
    x iPhones
    2 Lion clients
I want to use the Lion Server for all collaboration services, and use Profile Manager to provide central management of iOS and Lion clients, and I want to use network accounts on the server.
All is set up and working well, mail, ical, wiki, addressbook, VPN servers, profile manager settings, apart from one thing. how do I best push DNS server settings to the client to point to the server?
In the TC there are no way to set what DNS server is served to clients. That would solve my case in an instant. Now all clients get the ISPs DNS servers, or pass-through of whatever DNS server is set up on the TC.
    I have 2 possible solutions:
    1. Set up TC to only provide 1 DHCP address reserved for the server, and then use DHCP on the Lion Server for the internal clients. This will work as it has been tested by other users here on this forum.
    2. Set the DNS server on the TC to point to the local Lion Server. I actually just came up with this idéa as I was typing.... maybe that is the answer? The inernal clients get the internal server as DNS and the server uses forwarders or roothints.
What do you think? If you have this combo, TC/AEBS and Lion Server, how did you solve it?
    /Hasse

    Hi All!
I actually found the solution myself. Soluton 2 does the trick brilliantly! I can't imagine why I didn't think of this before. I have searched this forum for a solution too, but this just was too easy . The Lion Server advanced admin guide didn't mention this either, even in the chapter about AEBS coexistance.

Call Apple's online store's telesales agents: 1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775. For Lion you'll get a redemptions code via e-mail and need to DL from the Mac Apple Store (requires SL 10.6.6+).

Ever since installing iCloud and Lion my computer is slow or freezes.  The color wheel comes on and My work stops.  I have only a small window of time where my computers will function normally during the day. I know many others that have the same problem. I'll get 20-30 minutes of work done and then a sync or something comes on, the color wheel of death shows up, and my productivity is shot.  I have to shut the computer down the hard way!  when it comes back up, it is still either frozen or slow.  I've checked in at the genius bar and all they say is that there have been some problems that Apple is trying to fix.  It effects Mail, Contacts, Safari, Calendar....yeah, pretty much everything.  My iPhone and iPad are not effected as much so I end up doing what I can with them.  I've seen the blogs out there and understand that many have the same problem.  I have been waiting to read about a fix but I have found nothing!  Any ideas?

Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.
For startup issues...  open System Preferences > Users & Groups - Login Items. Delete any apps listed there then restart your mac.
And disable the Lion "resume" feature.
    Open System Preferences > General
Deselect:   Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps
And Spotlight may be indexing... you can turn that off > Turning Off Spotlight | Mac Tricks And Tips

  • External hard drive Snow Leopard and Lion compatibility?

I am going to install Snow Leopard on my Mac (so I can then purchase Lion and install THAT into my Mac) but it only has 975 mb of memory left. So, I've decided that I need to purchase an external hard drive so that I can transfer some videos, songs, etc. to create more space on my Mac. My question is, what external hard drive will be compatible with Snow Leopard and Lion? I was going to purchase a Western Digital external but I've heard many problems of it being incompatible with Lion. What's a reliable and compatible brand that I could purchase? I'm looking for an external hard drive that hold at least 500 gb.

I think your analysis is kind of harsh, kurt.
    'garbage'? really?
Sure, some familiar paradigms have changed, and change brings pain - or at least, unfamiliarity - but that doesn't necessarily mean they're bad.
Of all the changes you mention three things that you consider abominations...
UI changes more in line with iOS. Sure, and this is bad because...?
It's clear that Apple see the iOS as the future, and it makes sense to unify the experience - at least where it makes sense. You don't actually mention which elements you consider bad, BTW.
The scrolling seems to be the one most often cited, but to me it makes way more sense to manipulate the document directly, rather than manipulate a scroll bar that works inversely. I'm not sure what other UI elements you're concerned about.
As for the Save As... issue, the change to Duplicate makes a lot of sense when you understand the concept of automatic file saving and versioning. There's never a need to 'save as' in order to create a point-in-time backup since you automatically get point-in-time backups just by using the OS. The only reason it makes sense to to force a branch and for that, 'duplicate' makes sense. If it bothers you, just read 'duplicate' as 'save as'.
The big break here is that versioning requires application support - the developer needs to add it to their app code - and that creates inconsistencies in the short term because not all apps support versioning. That will fix in time as developers release updates to their apps.
As for bugs, the current release is 10.7.2, so that's two revisions past the original. Any major release (of any applications, not just an OS) is going to have some number of issues and some people avoid any .0 release just for that reason. I think the concensus is that by the time you get to .2 most of the issues have been resolved. Can you point to any bug in 10.7.2 that directly affects you and your use of the OS? or are you basing your statements on outdated material?
In short, every major OS release, from every OS vendor has some number of changes that confuse and upset users, and some number of short-term pain while application developers and users get up to speed. Lion is no different in that respect, and if you look back in history you'll see the exact same sentiment for Snow Leopard's release, and Leopard's, and Tiger's, and..., and..., and...
To call it garbage, though? I think not.

  • How do I make a back up system disk. I wish to run snow leopard and Lion on 1 drive.

I wish to run Snow Leopard and Lion on 1 Hard Drive. I need to back up snow leopard and then install Lion. Any suggestions on how to do this?

Too follow up on this topic - I have recently upgraded to 10.8.2. I have a complete backup HD with SL inclluding some SL-only programs on it. What I want is to make a small size, just SL and my few programs, hard drive with which I can boot when needed. Is it possible to trash all the many programs I have on the SL drive and just keep certain ones? How?
    Thanks you for any advice,

  • Dual boot machine- snow leopard and Lion

It appears I will need to set up one of my machines as dual boot, containing partitions for Snow Leopard and Lion. The reason is that Quicken is NOT compatible with Lion, and will apparently never be. Intuits "solutions" are to go to other, far less capable software, or not upgrade. Which, of course means, NEVER upgrade again.
So, I think my best solution is to set up a partition for snow leopard and one for Lion. How do I go about this? Size of partition. How to partition? Which boot disks do I use to do this?
    Any help is much appreciated.

Ok, I just got done doing this yesterday so I can lay it out for you.
1: Copy all your user files to a regular external drive and disconnect.
2: Carbon Copy Cloner your 10.6.8 setup to another blank HFS+Journaled external drive and disconnect.
3: Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk and erase your entire boot drive in Disk Utility (under the Utilities menu) format HFS+Journaled (default) of course.
4: Quit and install 10.6. Setup with the same user name as Snow. Run the 10.6.8 Combo Update. Then Software Update.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
5: Use the MacAppStore to download Lion, BUT DO NOT INSTALL yet! Cancel it and click on the Installer and select "Show in Finder" follow these instructions to make boot DVD's and dmg images of Lion installer.
    http://www.eggfreckles.net/tech/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/
6: Once you do that, then Install Lion. On a pristine 10.6.8 with no third party programs or other BS it should go perfectly. Check it out that it's stable just in case or else hold command r and boot into the Recovery Partition and redownload/install again.
7: Once that's done and Software Updated, run Bootcamp and create a Windows partition larger than your 10.6.8 clone naturally. The size is up to you to decide. Cancel the Bootcamp when the partition is created.
8: Hold Option and boot off the 10.6.8 clone with all your stuff and programs, use Disk Utility to change the "BOOTCAMP" partition to "Snow Leopard" and make it a HFS+ Journaled partition from the MSDOS format (not the whole drive now or you'll lose Lion and the Recovery Partition) If this doesn't work then use Disk Utility c booted from the 10.7 DVD or command r from the Lion Recovery Partition and use Disk Utility there.
9: Once that's done, Option boot off the 10.6.8 clone and Carbon Copy Clone 10.6.8 onto the Snow Leopard partition.
Walla, a dual boot system with all your stuff intact. Just hold option upon boot and/or use the Startup Disk in System Preferences to set a default.
I'm currently working on a quad boot system now. It's got Lion, Snow, Linux and will have Windows too. A lot more complicated than simply Snow and Lion.
Note: OS X Lion reguires a internet connection to install, even from a boot DVD.
    Enjoy.

  • Where can I get current info on SysAdmin Certification(s) for Mac OSX SL and Lion?

Where can I get current info on SysAdmin Certification(s) for Mac OSX SL and Lion? The Apple website for this is "under construction" for weeks now...
    Thanks,
    [email protected]

Certification test for OS X 10.7 Lion are not available yet. I assume they will be nearly identical to the test of 10.5 and 10.6. Hopefully, the reason the certification website has been down for a while is that they are updating it with the new information. Though I really wouldn't expect any 10.7 certification test to be available for 2-4 months. Peachpit Press didn't publish their training material for 10.6 until October even though 10.6 was released in August.
As far as the 10.6 Certifications:
Certified Support Professional, 10.6 requires the 9L0-403 exam.
Certified Technical Coordinator, 10.6 requires the 9L0-403 as well as the 9L0-510 (Server Essentials) exams.
The information for the Certified System Administrator, 10.6 is "hidden" on the integral7 website but according to this Wikipedia entry, you need to pass the 9L0-510 Server Essentials exam as well as these three:
    Directory Services
    Deployment
    Security and Mobility
