Filing or removing .dmg icons from the desktop

I have never known what the proper action is, after downloading apps (new versions of iTunes, for example), to remove the install .dmg extension icons from my desktop. Can they be trashed? Do I drag them to the HD? What?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Personally I file them in a Software Downloads folder so I know where to find them if I wish to use the software on another Mac or run the uninstaller.
Once the application has been copied to the Applications ƒ or the Installer run, you can then eject the disk image and then you are at liberty to either file or trash the .dmg.
I would say definitely keep them if there is an uninstaller but otherwise by the time you come to look at them again there is probably a newer version online so it's wasting hard disk space.
cheers

  • How can I remove icons from the desktop on my iPad Mini?

I understand that there are apps on my iPad that I cannot delete, but is there a way of removing an icon from the desktop?

Remove, but not uninstall from the device?  Where would they go if you did that?
Once you delete an App it gets removed form the homescreen, and deleted from the iPad.
There is no "Less used Apps" area or anything like that.
Everything you have, and you can access, is on the home screen. There is no other place to access Apps.

How do I stop my MacBook removing all my icons from the desktop ?

    Hi Matt
After I create say a word document, file it on my desktop and then shut down my machine. The next time I open up the MacBook the file icon has been removed from the desktop. I can still retrieve the file in a folder labeled with the month I created it. But why has the OS removed it from the desktop and how can I stop it happening?
It happens to alias icons as well!

  • How do I remove the Skype icon from the desktop that is on my left on the taskbar ?

Greetings to all, I have a Windows 7. 64--bit with SP--1. I have been unable, by searching, to find a way to remove the Skype icon from the desktop. It is on my left on the taskbar. Do I need to remove it in the registry ? If yes, how ? Thank you Ldxrunner

    Hi,
Are you trying to remove Skype entirely, or just get rid of the tool tray icon?
IIRC, you get that icon as long as Skype is running in the background.  There's a checkbox in Skype options that will keep it from running on startup.  That will eliminate the icon but you won't get notified for incoming calls.

  • How do I remove an icon from the dock of an iMac 10.9.5.?  Dragging doesn't work although I have tried a number of different places.  I recall right clicking used to give me a remove option.

How do I remove an icon from the dock of an iMac Maverick, 10.9.5?  I've tried dragging different places: desktop, finder list etc.  No luck.

Drag up towards the centre of the screen & hold for a second or so. The icon will have the 'smoke cloud' appear, let go & it will be removed.
There should also be a 'Remove from Dock' option in the popup menu. It is in the 'Options' section . ctrl+click will 'right click' if right clicking is disabled.
If this is not possible the Dock is locked (this may happen on a 'Managed Mac' normally setup by a company or school etc). See your tech support in this case.

I click on the desktop icon,( it is an old file I no longer use), I push command and delete,  then I put in password.  Then it sounds like the icon is deleted but the icon is still there.
Sounds like its permissions have been changed.
Right-click (or ctrl-click) the file and choose 'get info' from the drop-down.
Read the permissions at the bottom of the Info window.
If you don't have read & write access, what does?

How do I remove a folder icon from the display on the mac without deleting the folder?

If it's in the Dock, drag it out. It'll disappear.
If it's on the desktop or inside a folder, drag it to another location.

  • I want to Remove RSS icon from the address bar when I click on My SMF Forum

I have a SMF forum when I click on the login page I see an RSS icon in the right of the address bar next to a star.
The forum opens in an RSS to subscribe, which is stupid as it is not an RSS feed, it is a forum. I want to get rid of this and do not know how to do it.

This is a feature of firefox, although it may have been removed from firefox 4beta ( at least in default set up, no idea why). The appearance of the RSS icon within the location bar is intended to inform that RSS feeds are available from the site in use. You may note that this firefox forum we are using has such an icon displaying in the location bar, that is because feeds are available allowing you to track the threads, no doubt something similar happens with the SMF forum you mention.
If it is possible to remove the RSS icon from the location bar it will certainly not be straightforward, other than by upgrading to 4beta, and that is available now, and may be run whilst the stable version firefox 3.6 is still installed on your computer. (iirc there is an add-on available to add the rss icon to Fx4)
If a post answers your enquiry, you may wish to use the button alongside it to mark it as solved.

  • How can I remove an icon from my desktop that doesn't want to go?

I was unsuccessful in installing a particular program, so I thought I would just "wipe the slate clean" and try again. Unfortunately, the icon on my desktop doesn't want to go. Every time I try to move it into the TRASH, a note on the screen says, "The icon "iScrobbler" cannot be moved to the trash because it is open".
I've turned the computer off and on again, and I've tried the DELETE button, but the icon remains on my desktop. How can I remove it?

There can be many reasons why a file "doesn't want"
something. But you may be able to replace the file if
you can rename it. Follow the steps here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107426
If that doesn't help, you may need to delete it using
root user privileges. That's a very advanced and
risky method so you should consult with someone who
is experienced with that process. I have done it many
times to delete goofed files that have a mind of
    their own.
It didn't work, I'm sorry to say, but thanks for the idea. As to the "root user privileges" method, I wouldn't even consider it. My computer "skills" are definitely not at the level for trying anything that could be described in those terms. Still, there is hope. I found the creator of the program and sent him an e-mail message this morning.
Finally, I'd like to thank you again for your extraordinary performance. Talk about "service above and beyond.." well, that certainly describes you. I somehow feel that if you couldn't...no, no, let's not say that, let's just hope that the program's creator will be able to help. Thanks again for what you have done.

  • What do I do with the .dmg icon on the desktop?

Whenever I download a program and install it, the .dmg icon remains on the desktop. Sometimes they disappear but the latest has persisted for more than a week. Do I trash it or move it somewhere?

    Hi n,
I used to do that will all downloads/updates/upgrades, but after many years, it got so large and just something else to "house clean," that I stopped doing it, erased the folder, gained over 20GBs on my HD, and don't have to spend any time messing with it; on the rare occasion I need to re-download something, it's no big deal to me. Obviously ymmv.

  • How do I remove launchpad icon from the launchpad itself?

So after using Clean My Mac 2 for the first time I deleted 3.25GB of space from my macbook air. What was also deleted were the iconds in the launchpad, by icons I mean that when I openes launchpad you could see a space and the name of the app but you couldn't see the icon. The way to fix that was to drag all the apps from the application folder in the finder to the launchpad icon in the dock. Now all of my apps are back and launchpad is also in the launchpad now and I want to get rid of it because it is useless there. Is launchpad supposed to be inside the launchpad anyway or did it appear there because I dragged all the apps from the applications folder to the launchpad icon? Any help will be accepted. Thank You.

Hold down the COMMAND key, select the icon and drag out of the menubar. It should away.

  • How do I remove an icon from my desktop?

I just bought my Macbook Pro, and I've been getting it setup the way I want it. I installed Google Chrome and it left a white drive icon the desktop. I've tried putting it in the trash bin, but it says it cannot be deleted because Chrome is using it (even though there is no chrome window open). I've also tried dragging it into a folder in Finder (applications, documents, etc.) and it will copy it into the folder, but the icon is still there on the desktop. What should I do? Is there another way I can hide it or cut and paste it into a folder?

There isn't anything that gives me the option to Quit. There is an option to eject it, but the same message keeps coming up (The disk "Google Chrome" couldn't be ejected because "Google Chrome" is using it. Quit that application and try to eject the disk again.) when I try to do that.
