Fill brush stokes ?

When I'm working with illustrator I like to use the brush tool to create my line work beacuase of the nice ticks and thins I get. I'd love to be able to use my fill bucket to color my art...but no can do. The only way I've found to color it is by painstakingly dawing each shape with the pen tool on a separate layer and then filling those shapes. Surly therre must be a better way. Can someone please help me find a way to convert these brush strokes into something I can flood fill.
Thanks

> It's a kind of Live Paint light for AI 9, 10 or 11 users...
More than that, Kurt, it's a kind of Live Paint for AICS2 users that doesn't require conversion of the line work to a special Live Paint object; and that doesn't remove the Brush strokes from your line work as soon as you use it.
Kurt's suggestion is a valuable technique. For those who haven't downloaded and dissected the file, the principle is this:
1. Create a new document. Layers Palette: New Layer.
2. Layers Palette: Target the lower layer by clicking its target circle.
3. Appearance Palette: From the Flyout menu, select Add New Fill. Give this fill some color other than black. It doesn't matter what color; its purpose is just for the filled areas to show.
4. Still in the Appearance Palette, click the Fill listing and drag it to below the Contents listing. Leave it selected.
5. Effect menu: Pathfinders>Merge. your Appearance Palette should now look like this:
Layer
Stroke [none]
Contents
Fill
Merge
Color [your color]
Default Transparency
4. Layers Palette: Choose the top layer. (Don't target it; just chose it to make it the current layer.)
5. Brushes Palette: Chose a Brush. (Any of the default Calligraphy Brushes will do, but I usually use an Art Brush made from a simple geometric shape, such as a "football" or a right-pointing triangle.) Make the current Fill color None, and the Stroke color Black.
6. Brush Tool: Draw four more-or-less straight strokes in the top layer, in the form of a tic-tac-toe board.
7. Select all. Layers Palette: drag the selection marker (the little square at the right end of the top layer's listing) down to the lower layer. You should see the center square of the tic-tac-toe board become filled.
8. Move the ends of the strokes around a bit. You should see the colored fill redraw itself accordingly. (This is the aspect of it's being like Live Paint, as Kurt mentioned.)
9. Now get the Brush tool again and draw some loose paths on the lower layer, as if you were drawing the linework of a freehand cartoon. Wherever crossing or touching paths create a visually enclosed area, the colored fill occurs.
10. Select the paths of your cartoon figure. Drag the selection marker up to the top layer. Note that the fills disappear, because these paths now reside on a layer which does not have the Fill and Merge Effect applied at the Layer level.
So, if you want to draw without fills automatically appearing while you create your line work, draw into the top layer. If you want to draw with fills automatically appearing, draw into the lower layer. At any time, you can move the paths between the two layers.
When you're finished with the line work:
11. Select some of the paths on the lower layer. Object>Expand Appearance. Because parts of the Appearance are Layer-level attributes, all of the paths on that layer will be expanded into "literal" paths, and you'll have a Group. However, if you were to ungroup the selection, you'd see that there are duplicate objects underneath each of those created from the brush strokes. These duplicate objects will also have the color of the enclosed area fills. So...
12. After Expand Appearance, click the Merge Pathfinder in the Pathfinder Palette. THEN ungroup the selection. Move a few of the objects apart and you'll see that the extra fills underneath the former brush strokes are gone. You have nice tidy merged paths which "kiss" without overlaps or "crosscuts." (Besides just being tidy, the art is already mostly optimized for such things as vinyl cutting. If you want small overlaps as I often do for vinyl, use Select Same Fill Color to select all the fill color objects and use Offset Path to create the desired overlap underneath the surrounding line work.)
13. Of course, now you can just select the individual fill area objects and re-color them as desired.
Kurt, thank you for this. I've never played around much with Pathfinder Effects applied to Layers, and evidently your previous post of this technique came at a time when it was not convenient for me to download the sample file.
I hope the above elaboaration will be of help to others who may have difficulty realizing what is going on in the sample file; and that it may help them get as much use out of this as I probably will.
I also hope others will play with this and understand why it is such a disappointment to me that Live Paint removes Brushes.
I also notice that when using this technique, the Merge Pathfinder (the literal one in the Pathfinder Palette, not the Effect) adds way too many points to the linework paths. To see what I mean, try this:
1. Draw the tic-tac-toe grid in the top layer using the Brush Tool, using the default 15 pt. oval Calligraphic Brush.
2. Select the four paths. Object>Expand Appearance. Note the number of points used to outline the strokes. Note that the original spine paths of the former Brush Srokes are still there.
3. Click the Merge Pathfinder icon in the Pathfinder Palette. This removes the spine paths and unions the filled paths, eliminating the cross cuts. Note that the number of points has not significantly increased.
4. Now Undo the merge. Undo the Expand Appearance. Drag the four paths to the lower level (the Level with the Pathfinder Effect applied to it).
5. Expand Appearance. Click the Merge Pathfinder button. Note that many, many points have been added to the paths which define the line work.
I find that completely ungrouping before doing the Merge does not avoid the unwanted additional points. But if you ungroup, then select just the line work before clicking the Merge button, it will do the merge without adding the extra points. So I would suggest doing this:
After you are finished with the line work, Expand Appearance. But before changing the colors of the fill objects, do this: Fully Ungroup. Then select one of the colored fill objects, and choose Select Menu>Same>Fill Color. Then Select>Inverse, leaving just the line work objects selected. Then click the Merge icon. (Of course, if other unrelated objects exist in the file, temporarily lock layers or hide objects to avoid selecting objects other than the line work.)
(It would be nice if the Merge Pathfinder could be improved so as to not cause these additional points in such situations.)

  • Illustrator brushtool NOT displaying brush stoke in realtime... Please help!

    Hi
I been a hunting for a solution to my problem for a while now and am desperate to find out why it's happening and how to fix it
When I apply a brushstroke with my brushtool, No stroke displays itself in Realtime until I end the stroke.
And the other weirdest thing is it only on part of my monitor screen (right side) is where it doesn't show in realtime ... the other 2/3 of the screen it does show while doing the stroke action in realtime.
So if I'm doing a stoke with my brush tool from right to the left of my screen, nothing will show until it reaches a certain point on my screen, then from there on it displays in realtime as it's supposed to. Once I lift the brush and end the stroke only then does the full stroke reveal itself. And if I do it from left to right of the screen then opposite happens i.e. ... 1st one can see the stroke in realtime, but then it disappears once my stroke action reaches the specific area of my screen.
I thought it might be my screen, but I've tried on different monitor screen and have the same problem.
SOMETIMES, it works normally and displays itself completely the way it's supposed to, but the rest of the time it doesn't, and I have no idea what's making it behave this way
    I'm working on a laptop i7 8gigram, Win7 64bit.
Please I'd really badly like a solution to this problem.

    Hi Cari
Thanks for your quick response. I'm using CS6 with latest update (it also happened before the update, was hoping the update would fix it)
I'm using various calligraphy brush tools which again I say seems to display ONLY on the right hand side 2/3 of my monitor screen, it stops displaying at a very clear and crisp area down the one side of my screen.
The files I'm working on aren't very large at all, between 5 and 8 megabytes in size. At the moment I'm only doing "line-art" with no special fills or effects, as I then take the line art afterwards to pPhotoshop for coloring.
However, I have now noticed ... that if I open only one file (5-8mb), it all seems to be working fine, but the moment I open more that one file (even just 2 files at the same time), THEN the problem seems to occur.
So I'm thinking MAYBE it is a memory issue, ... but then again I don't understand why because the files are so small ... I have 8gig ram, Win 7 64bit.
Also regarding the scratch disc ... I made a separate partition of about 50gig which I use as the scratch disc instead of using the "start-up" or same partition that my OS is on ... that should be sufficient shouldn't it for the small size files I'm working with?
I'm not using the "secondary scratch-disc" as I for one don't know how it would effect it, and also if I did would making a nother 2nd partition for this actually be right and would it make any difference?
    TIA

    Hi:
I thought CS5 was bad, but brushing with CS6 all brush strokes are very, very slow. If I make a brush stoke I have literally have to put my hand on my chin and wait for the brush to catch up. I cannot work like this. Any suggestions on what to do to speed up the brushes? Forget about adding anything else to Photoshop, please work on speeding up exisiting functions.

  • Fade Brush in CS6

Im using a tablet. I want to make my brush stoke very very short. Previously, I would do this by setting the fade to a very small number. I think I used to set it to airbrush but possibly it worked in brush as well. (I cant even figure out how to select an airbrush now) How do I do this in 6?

The tablet works fine. Amd I can sort of get the effect I'm wanting by just making very short strokes and letting off the pressure at the end of the stroke. However, It's hard to do such s small stroke this way (maybe 3/32" long). Hence it would be easier if I could set the fade to do this for me. This version simply has way too many controls. I can't figure how to set it whether brush or airbrush. I've read done stuff about "size jitter" jitter this jitter that etc but non of it is helpful.

  • Problem Using Brush Colors

I am just working with Photoshop Elements 10 and I seemed to have hit a "brick wall". For one reason or another whenever I use a brush with any color to it, whether it is in "Normal" or "Color" mode, or whether I am on a solid white background, a layer of the very same white background, or a clipping mask with any color background, the color of my brush stoke is hit or miss. One time out of ten it is the color I set in the foreground, nine other times it is a related hue on the color wheel. And if I get the desired color I want on the 1st stroke, without changing anything my very next stroke will be a different color . . . BUT always the next related color in the color wheel. The third brush stroke will be the thrid related color in the color wheel, the fourth will go back to the preslected color. Brush stokes 5 and 6 will cycle through the color wheel. The 7th stroke will be the preselected color again. White, black, or light gray brushes are no problem. BUT when I start using colored brushes I have no control over the colors.
The only hint I can give you is just before I noticed this I was poking around in the Photoshop Color Kuler -  https://kuler.adobe.com/create/color-wheel
Up until that point everything was working fine. I am wondering if there was something changed in Elements on me when I was poking around with different color schemes? Would a "Reset Brushes" in the Brush Menu help or really throw me for a loop?
    Thanks in advace -
    Mark

    Thanks a million Barbara ! ! !
I have no idea how this worked or why it got set to act as it was in "jitter" mode but that is exactly what I needed to do to fix the problem.
    Thanks again -

  • Custom brush strokes in AE?

I have ideas for animation with fancy brush strokes.  Brush strokes i know i have in photoshop.  But from what i have found thus far, I am not able to bring in Photoshop brush stokes into AE.  Does anyone know the best solution to animate with brush strokes other than the default ones, or a great work around?

  • Tapered brush strokes

Please help. I really would like to know how to create
variable brush stokes in Freehand MX. I have tried using the
calligraphic pen and that is awful and even creating a custom brush
does not give neatly tapered lines. How do the graphic designers do
it? Do they punch organic shapes, do they just trace really well or
just use the pen tool really well OR do they have a set of brushes
that I dont have? Even tracing an image is difficult as there are
bound to be one or two nodes that are not smooth. Even the
auto-trace tool is not neat. These are examples of vector images
    with smooth tapered lines:
    http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/object/5394729_flower.php?id=5394729
    http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/object/4652986_floral_design.php?id=4652986
How on earth are these created so neatly and perfectly? Are
there more brushes one can download for Freehand because the
library of brushes now is soooooo limited. What am I
    missing...please help...
    Thank-you
    Louise

In addition to creating your own brushes, which is very
    useful, you can
create graceful tendrils and spirals several ways in
    FreeHand.
Use the Spiral tool as a starting point. Apply a tapered
    brush stroke.
Another method that creates even nicer spirals is to use
    power duplicate.
Use this method to create a series of small paths to join
    into a single
path. Here's an old tip of mine here that shows how to
    power-duplicate
    spirals.
    http://www.freehandsource.com/_frames/_tips/_archive/tip_week045.html
I wrote this before FH offered the Transform Effect, but you
    can do the same
by combining rotate, move, scale and copy commands. Here's an
    example to get
    you started:
    1. Draw a vertical line 10 points long. Leave selected
    2. Object Panel>Effects>Transform.
Add all of these transformation within the same Transform
    Effect:
    Scale 101% uniform
    Rotate 8 degrees
    Move x:0, y:-8
    Center x:13.21, y:4.596
    Copies 100
(Hint: When you have a spiral you like, highlight Effect:
    Transform in the
Object Panel and make a Style which you can apply to other
    objects.)
    3. When you have a smooth spiral, Separate Attributes.
    4. Ungroup and Join.
    5. Simplify path.
    6. Apply a wedge-shaped brush stroke.
If you apply the spiral Transform Effect to a slightly
    tapered rectangle and
ensure that all the copies overlap smoothly, you won't need a
    brush stroke.

  • File with clear background places with white background

    Hi,
I upgraded to PS10 and when try to place a saved pdf in IDCS2 the background changes from clear to white.
Is there a way to place it so the background doesn't show? Am I mixing up Illustrator and PS10 functions?
    Thanks,
    Garrett

It functions to my Phaser fine out of PS CS3 in any version 1.3+
Transparency works out of PS PDF (CS 1, 2[?] and 3). I'm looking at it right now. What the heck am I missing? It doesn't "retain" transparency? -- I can see it in my IND file. In PS: Layer 1 is type. Works fine, retains vector. Layer 2 is soft brush stokes. Work fine, retain transparency in soft areas. Layer three is color fill set to 50% trans. Works fine, overlays a color element in IND great.
And MO, it doesn't matter if it's 1.3 or 1.7 (out of PS CS3). What's up with that? Is this a lo-res output only thing that will crash on any good RIP? Will I not be able to blend reliably when trying to flatten (and does that matter)?
Set me right. What's going on!

  • Using illustrator for iOS graphics and frame animations (beginner question)

    Hey there,
Just want to get some opinions and advice.
We are developing a sidescolling 2D game and I am creating 2D graphics in illustrator, ...so far so good, at this point in time I have a few characters designed.
Now for the character poses, positions and frame by frame animations.... hmmmm.
I have been searching for examples of ways to create character movements and positions in illustrator but as of yet have not found any good examples or explainations.
Would anyone care to share (or point me to some examples) of workflows you use to create different poses and character postions using illustrator...
(eg. should I be importing my artwork into flash to use the bone tool? Or should I create each variation in illustrator by copying my character and manipulating)

Though the people I have talked to are using solely illustrator to do just that!?
Maybe the people you've talked to just haven't taken opportunity to familiarize themselves with Bones. The artwork for cartooney walking animations can be done fairly easily in a drawing program, using Blends, Transform Again etc. So in many cases it's just not a big deal either way.
What is the advantage of using just illustrator to create animations, I'm guessing that its because the drawing tools available are superior to flash?
To me, it's not so much about "superior" drawing tools in a drawing program; it's more about a more complete set of drawing tools and commands. Flash has a Bezier drawing tool that works fine, so you can draw paths with control. But creating Blends on paths is just more convenient to do right on the page, without involving a timeline, keyframes, etc. Brushes and Transform Effect make it easy to repeat a series of objects. Flash's continual on-the-fly autotracing and auto merging of overlapping unselected and ungrouped objects can be cumbersome while drawing.
See this example. Then click the Construction Notes link below it to view a 2-page PDF that shows how the majority of the artworks was accomplished with just two very simple ArtBrushes used in combination with pathBlends. That kind of stuff is often just easier/quicker to do in a drawing program, release to layers, and then copy/paste or otherwise import to Flash.
Using Blends in AI for things like this experiment can save alot of tedium and time, as compared to working only with Flash's drawing tools. (Notes here.)
Some things just can't be done with only Flash's drawing tools. Envelope distortions, for example, can be blended to create frame-by-frame shape tweens that would be difficult to do with just Flash's native tools, as in this experiment. (The animation is embedded on Page 11 of the PDF; you may have to click "Trust this host one time only" in Reader and then click the middle of the page to get it to play, depending on your OS version.)
But as a general rule whenever using a drawing program in conjunction with Flash, avoid using more than ordinary flat fills and stokes in the drawing program before importing the paths to Flash. If you want to involve grads, shadows, transparency, etc., you'll generally be better off adding those things in Flash. Such effects are not the same constructs in different programs, and will most likley become rasterized in Flash (as is the case in the last example, above).
So again, it depends on specifically what you are trying to do.

  • Displaying PathGeometry into canvas take too long time

    Hi every one,
I am working on spatial data with an application WPF and I would like to draw a map from data queries.
I got my data and I am able to draw them on a canvas with scroll bar and zoom.
My problem is when I want to zoom or scroll the canvas take a long time before draw the map.
The big problem is there :
    Dim poly As New Polygon
    poly.Stroke = Brushes.Red
    poly.Fill = Brushes.Orange
    poly.StrokeThickness = 5
    Dim colPoint As New PointCollection
    For i = 1 To geo.STNumPoints
    Dim ls As New LineSegment()
    colPoint.Add(New Point(geo.STPointN(i).STX.Value - extentA, geo.STPointN(i).STY.Value - extentB))
    Next
    colPoint.Add(New Point(geo.STPointN(1).STX.Value - extentA, geo.STPointN(1).STY.Value - extentB))
    poly.Points = colPoint
    masterCanvas.Children.Add(poly)
so the canvas is "masterCanvas" and i add each Polygon one by one. I would like if it is possible to gather all polygon into one "image" and then when it will refresh the canvas it will draw only one thing.

  • Swatches duplicating/slow copying ARGH

CS 5, Illustrator 15.1.0, OS 10.6.7 Mac (Had this problem in CS4...)
This has been discussed before, and I have tried the suggested solutions (cleaning out the "bad" code: e.g. %AI5_Begin_NonPrinting), but when I have done this, it has screwed up my documents to be uneditable or information being invisible and completely unfixable.
Problem: seemingly clean document, cleaned out swatch palette. Copy an item (spot colors involved) and paste into new document (also with cleaned up swatch palette), and all the unused/deleted swatches return. In copying/pasting the process takes far far longer than it should, my indicator that something is amiss.
So far, today, this is what is happening: copy a colored box from a swatch palette cleaned document. Paste into a palette cleaned new document, it copies over swatches that are not part of the copied item (all the default swatches). I then clean out the swatch palette again on this new document. Save. Get the "HUH" (This operation cannot complete because of an unknown error. [HUH?]) error. Then copy colored box again, paste, and none of the erroneous swatches return. However, each copy/paste/save action of a simple box with PMS 485 takes a minute each.
I just discovered today that the documents that I thought were "clean" are truly not and now I am thoroughly upset since I now have a client library full of Illustrator documents that are infected bringing hours and hours and hours of rebuilding my documents if there is no solution to this problem. Please please please advise. Thank you!
If Illustrator programmers and Adobe can't fix this known problem, well they are just f*@ked up. <--------how upset am I?

When I do the fix of deleting the code between the %AI5_Begin_NonPrinting & End tags sometimes the file is perfect, other times I get invisible items. I manually fix the invisible items, which usually does not take very long.
The invisible items happen for me happen where set fill and stoke none at the character level and apply that to the type level for stacked strokes.
Has been almost a year since this problem originated here, and though the situation looked catasctophic at the time(total account devastation, spreading to other accounts), no issues have returned after a month of flushing out files on the server. I have fixed this problem for a number of different people, but have never had files where the problem returned, or atleast they have not emailed me back. Sorry to hear the fix I posted did not totally eradicate this beast of a problem.
Only recomendation I have is to check again that every instance of the code between the AI5 tags is removed, and that noone copies from an infected file back into a cleansed on. Sorry to hear you have this BEAST of a problem.

  • Cs4 performance

Just doing my first bit of serious phtoshopery in cs4.
    WELCOME BACK TO 1996!
I have all the open GL stuff turned off. WHen I do a brish stroke and undo it takes a second or so to undo.  adding a gradient to a mask in a 21mb image takes several seconds to update.
I do a brush stoke and I see the egg timer before I get a screen update.
it  feels like its maybe doing that whilst it updates the layer thumbnail.  Urgh.  Lightrrom 2 is unbelievably slow, now my workhorse has gone the same way.
Will getting a quadro help with this or is it a fundemntal problem?
    (I'm on a 2.7 ghz core2 with 4gb or ram in xp 32bit).

hmmm, well theres a ton of people using lightroom who are having the same problem.
And this computer is not exactly a load of crap.  Mb is a GA 965p DS3, 800mhz ram, I've got my page file set off my boot drive (a 74gb raptor), and scratch disc set to a different drive again.
Still curious if anyone has had a crappy video card, updated and found things improved.
its possible I've got some corrupt fonts installed: I keep meaning to get round to extracting windows core fonts but its a bit of a faff.  Not sure how this would impact lightroom though.
    edit:
Just found this in the KB article:
    Display card: All
Issue: When you run two monitors under Windows XP, Photoshop responds slowly.
Solution 1: If you are using an NVIDIA display card, you might be able to work around this issue by selecting compatibility mode in the NVIDIA Advanced control panel.
    Solution 2: Use one monitor.
Solution 3: Turn off Enable OpenGL Drawing.
Although its ambiguous whether its only an issue if openGl is on

  • Creating a logo

    Hello,
I have read on this forum that using Indesign CS3 to create a logo is not as effective as using Illustrator. However, to purchase Illustrator and to go through a learning curve would be a significant effort on my part.
Therefore as I am now fairly familiar with Indesign and Photoshop, I was wondering if I could use these applications in conjunction with a couple of less expensive logo making applications? And if so, can anyone recommend another Logo creation program I can use with Indesign CS3?
I am currently using AAA Logo and another application called Logosmartz. I believe these applications can get some of the different brush strokes, gradients, and opacities that possibly Indesign cannot.
Additionally, are they are symbols in both the Indesign and Photoshop libraries that I could possibly import? If so can someone point me to the URL that I can grab these?
    Thanking you in advance,
    Bob

Actually, InDesign can do quite a bit as far as logo creation is concerned. No, you don't have Illustrator's pattern fills, brushes, blends or multiple strokes, but you can fake a lot of that stuff if you only need to do it occasionally and you are willing to spend some time.
I was doing some on-site training the other day at a local company where they have only ID and Photoshop Elements and discovered the only logo they had was done in Photoshop. It consists of nothing but type and some simple shapes. I did a quick version in ID that's 100% vector (so it's scalable for anything from letterhead to trade show displays) and can be easily edited inside ID for color and saved out as a PDF (or even, cringe, .eps) if it needs to go someplace besides a new ID document.

  • ACR 8.3 local control issue

I have the latest PS CC installed and ACR 8.3.0.141.  Just yesterday the local ACR paintbrush control for exposure stopped working properly.  It is acting in a muted fashion in that when I push the exposure control to extremes, like +4 or -4, and paint an area the control just barely changes the images exposure.  Earlier in the day it worked fine.  Any ideas on what I can do to get it working properly again.  I use that control a lot!

Flow is how long “paint” comes out of one brush stroke, with 100 being forever.  In other words something less than 100 will fade the effect as you make the brush stoke take more time.  I usually have mine set to 100 unless I’m actually painting tiny little strokes that I want to fade.

  • Illustrator a poor substitute for Freehand for business users

I have discovered to my horror that Snow Leopard makes it impossible for Excel graphs to be copied into Freehand any longer. This is 90% of the work I do and have been doing for 15 years. Since Adobe would like Freehand users to migrate to Illustrator, I thought I would give that a try to see what would happen.
The graphs paste in, but they are sized above the size of the artboard, creating extra work.
There are also issues with how the text boxes work (if I try to right-justify the x-axis numbers, they move to the left).
In Freehand I religiously use the "Select -- Same as Selection -- Page" command as I complete the charts one by one, to change the strokes to the right weights for publishing and to methodically change the Excel colours to Pantone colours, etc -- all the things Microsoft does not allow for. However, as far as I can tell, when you use the "Select Same" command in Illustrator, it selects everything that matches on every artboard; this means I would have to have 80 separate Illustrator files for the reports I do that have 80 charts! Can anyone tell me if there is a way to select similar objects on individual artboards and not on all artboards at once?
By far the worst problem I encountered is that, when I tried to paste line  graphs into Illustrator from Excel, all but one of the data lines would  disappear -- rendering the charts unusable for my client's analytical  purposes. Freehand never did this; all pasted charts came into Freehandas perfect vector graphics on only one layer.
I used to do these time-sensitive charts in less than a minute each with Freehand's slick capabilities, and I'll be lucky to do each one in less than 30 minutes now -- putting me out of work in short order. For as long as humanly possible, I will keep using Leopard so that I don't have to try to use Illustrator for something Freehand can do 1,000 times better. Why, oh why, can't Illustrator interface with Excel the way Freehand can? Seems like we business users are being left out in the cold by both Apple and Adobe.

Ok here is your new process. There will be little differences on some excel files but they shouldn't be too hard to tackle. Plus I'm always an email or a tweet away at @ask_illustrator
    1) Open your .xls in excel and choose File -> Save As. In the Format drop down, choose PDF.
    2) Open that .pdf in Illustrator. If it's a multi-page .pdf, AI will prompt you for which page to open.
    3) Choose Select -> All or press command+a.
    4) Choose Object -> Clipping Path -> Release. Then choose Object -> Compound Path -> Release.
    5) Repeat step 4 until both options have "Release" grayed out.
    6) Choose Select -> Deselect or just click anywhere outside of the work area with your selection tool.
    7) In your Color panel (Window -> Color) change both the fill and stoke colors to none by clicking the swatch (Window -> Swatches) that is white with a red diagonal line through it.
    8) Choose Select -> Same -> Fill & Stroke then press delete or backspace.
The previous steps will prepare the artwork for editing and get rid of any un-needed shapes.
    9) now select an object that needs to be changed to a spot color
    10) Choose Select -> Same -> Fill & Stroke again and in the color panel, drag the color to the swatches panel to add it as a new swatch. Double-click your new swatch and choose Spot Color in the Color Type drop down menu.
Any other clean up should be pretty obvious, just remember to use select same fill & stroke to grab similar shapes quickly.
    Welcome to AI!
