Fill-in Flash

Hello ... I am reading Rick Sammon's photography books, specifically the one on photoshop tips and tools.  In one of his chapters, he references a tool in Photoshop Elements.  It was a Lighting>Fill-in Flash.  I have Elements 8 and don't see that tool.  Perhaps it was included in previous version  of Photoshop Elements.  Any Thoughts.

I don't have this book and don't know the substance of the tutorial. In Elements v.8 you can add a "flash" with the lighting effects filter (Filter>render>lighting effects). Here is a print screen:
http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=13bcLnFxRV4GaFsZXMqUYIkO4iJys4
Open picture, duplicate background layer, work on background copy layer, shut off visibility of background layer by clicking on its eye icon. This will allow you to toggle off/on between these two layers as you go along.
Open new, blank layer at top of stack of layers, fill with 50%gray (Edit>fill), mode> soft light or overlay.
Access the filter. In the dialog, I used Style>floodlight. If you double click the light bulb icon, you can expand/contract the circle of "light" with ease using the handles. Click ok.
Since this is on its own layer, you can use the eraser tool if the "light" spills over to  a spot where you don't want it. To demonstate this, I erased at the edge of the door and the man's arm on layer 1. You can also alter the opacity of the layer.

  • Exporting pattern fills to SWF

    Hi all,
    We came across an interesting issue at my job.
    We generate images in Illustrator CS3, for use for print and online formats. For some of the online formats, we export SWFs, to use in some interactive Flash files (CS3). When we export images that have a pattern fill, Flash tends to rasterize it upon import, which makes it blurry and awful. We'd like to keep them crisp vectors.
    I have already checked the AI Importer settings in Flash, and those are set to not rasterize images.
    One of our illustrators came up with a workaround, but it is somewhat labor-intensive. It involves expanding the pattern-filled object, making the resulting paths from the pattern into a compound path, and then using the pathfinder palette's intersection between the new compound path and the original outline of the fill.
    It works, but as I said, it's fairly labor-intensive, and we are having to do this to individual fills one at a time, because the operations involved are somewhat fussy. The main area where we are running into this issue is with some grayscale maps, where pattern fills are used as colors for some of the territories.
    1) Is CS5 any better with exporting these kinds of fills to Flash?
    2) Does anyone have a better solution for converting these to SWFs?
    Thanks.

    Not that I know. Inherent limitation in how differently this stuff works between the two apps.
    2) Does anyone have a better solution for converting these to SWFs?
    You could build a symbol/ pattern library in Flash and assign rthe fills there., could you not?

    I have a 24inch 1920x1080 monitor. I want to read the text on the screen but at the IE defualt of 100% it gets very tideous trying to read the wrighting and its the same with Adobe Flash player it becomes ridiculously small. I like to have my browser at 150% everything fits the screen better you dont have these giant borders on either side of what you are looking at and you can read the wrighting easier, but here comes the problem adobe flash player video (minus youtube videos) stays the same size as if I was still at 100% and doesn't fill the flash player margains. id expect the video to enlarge with the browser? No?
    Before you ask ive turned off hardware acceleration and that did not work.

    Thanks for the reply.

    I should have made that more clear. I went to Control Panel -> Uninstall a program and then removed it there. After that, the folder was still there in the system32 directory so I renamed it to be safe that the old is not being used. Then I went to Adobe.com and installed the flash player through the browser with their download manager.

  • Trouble trying to rotate a gradient in Flash

    I understand that making a rectangle in object drawing mode
    and then filling that rectangle with a gradient fill that I can
    then rotate that fill using the Gradient Transform Tool. The
    problem is it is out of control when I select the corner rotate
    handle: It does not constrain to 90 degrees when I hold the shift
    key down and the indicators that show the rotate angle on the stage
    disappear off the screen in a strange fashion.
    Something is wrong but I've never used this feature before

  • Flash player 9 installation won't stay

    OS: FedoraCore 6
    Kernel: 2.6.18.2798.fc6
    Browser: Firefox 2.0.0.2
    Desktop: KDE 3.5.4
    1st of all, FlashPlayer is working correctly in every way
    that I have used it so far...
    ...but the problem is that I need to copy plugin and
    component files over and over again to browser folders.
    Test page (and every other page that have flash) shows blank
    (instead of missing plugin) in the space that should be filled with
    flash content. So, it seems that browser "knows" that flash has
    been installed. The files are in their correct folder, but still I
    need to copy them again or plugin won't work.
    When I copy (those 2 needed) files in their folders, test
    page (and others) show that installation is correct. But, when I
    log out and back in again, flash won't work and have to copy files
    again.
    Needles to say this is quite annoying. Is there any solution
    to this...

    Still have not found a solution to this.
    Only one user is affected by this problem ie. me.
    Luckily I have root access, so I can copy the file myself.
    Still it is quite annoying to do it everytime I need to use
    flash.

  • CF Flash Forms/CAPTCHA

    I am working on using a flash form for a contact form and in
    the past I have always used captcha images in this situation to
    prevent spam...
    I have tried using the cfimage tag within my form and it
    doesn't seem to be working.
    Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this working or if
    captchas are needed? Can bots fill out flash forms??
    Thanks!

    You are doing exactly what you will need to do to convert...
    It is time consuming...your best bet is to start from
    scratch. I have tried and I found it more difficult to correct the
    syntax errors...plus I need the code time in Flex Builder to
    understand the IDE and what it does...

  • Upgrade to 6D from7d - flash& wifi issues - worth upgrade?

    Dear Friends,
    At present I have the following for about 2 years:
    7d
    canon EF-S 15-85mm
    canon EF 24-105mm L
    canon EF 35 mm f2
    and Blackberry 9900
    I am considering to sell 7d & EF-S lense for 6d and use L lense with the new body.
    The main purpose is general usages, and also for work, indoors, outdoors, travelling and family photos.
    others features aside, only 2 matters remain: WIFI & Built-in flash.
    1.
    can I transfer photos from 6D directly over wifi to Blackberry?
    Does it work well?
    or, Alternatively, shall I buy Wireless Transmitter WFT-E5A for 7d instead? does this work with BB?
    with 7d, after taking photos at work or leisure, I am "forced" to go back to laptop, plug cables,
    and send via BB to customers/ friends. If 6D can do this wirelessly, it will be ONE of my big upgrading point.
    please help on this matter.
    2.
    I use 7d built-in flash like 90% just for fill-in flash during the day, high contrast areas or at night for lighting up the subjects. 6d has none (and I am not considering buying any speedlites yet)
    Will I still be able to achieve good photos with 6d?
    Can 6d handle high contrast area without the fill-in flash?
    thank you so much on your inputs in these 2 matters.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    The wireless apps is for android and ios only. I do not know if the wft-e5a will work or not.
    Nothing can replace fill flash. Without fill flash you will have to over expose the ambient in order to fill the shadow.
    If those two are your reason to update then it is not worth it.

  • Resizing FLV files in Dreamweaver CS3

    Hello,
    I am adding videos to my websites' "videos main page", and these extra videos are going to be added to the videos currently in the flash player. I have already copied the jpg preview picture files and the flv video files into my website directory. To contain the extra data, I have already added the appropriate number of <li>'s to the index.html file of the videos folder. For each new video I have also added an <img src="...."> line to the images.xml file. The images.xml file has information regarding the id, location etc..of every video in general. It is shown below.
    images.xml file:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <gallery>
         <album id="videos" title="CBET Videos" description="CBET Video Gallery"
         lgPath="video_gallery/album1/videos/">
              <img src="2g_robotics.flv" id="2g_robotics" vidpreview="video_gallery/album1/videos/2g_robotics_preview.jpg" caption="2G Robotics"/>
              <img src="clearpath.flv" id="clearpath" vidpreview="video_gallery/album1/videos/clearpath_preview.jpg" caption="Clearpath"/>
              <img src="medshare.flv" id="medshare" vidpreview="video_gallery/album1/videos/medshare_preview.jpg" caption="Medshare"/>
              <img src="nalion.flv" id="nalion" vidpreview="video_gallery/album1/videos/nalion_preview.jpg" caption="Nalion"/>
              <img src="mbetcommercial.flv" id="mbetcommercial" vidpreview="video_gallery/album1/videos/mbet_commercial.jpg" caption="MBET Commercial"/>
              <img src="ocecbetcommercial.flv" id="ocecbetcommercial" vidpreview="video_gallery/album1/videos/oce_cbet_commercial.jpg" caption="OCE CBET Commercial"/>
              <img src="bostontrip08.flv" id="bostontrip08" vidpreview="video_gallery/album1/videos/boston_trip_08.jpg" caption="Boston Trip 2008"/>
         </album>
    </gallery>
    The only issue that I have, is that the videos themselves display in the player at a much smaller size, than the container size. I bet you could fit a three by three array of videos in my flash player. The first four img src lines are the videos that play at the correct size, and fill the flash player container, whereas the last three img src lines (the ones I added) are the videos that do not display at a correct size.
    Is there any way that I can resize the flv files so that they fill the container within the flash player in Dreamweaver CS3? I primarily assumed that one can simply change the pixel dimensions (width and height) properties of the flv file itself, but apparently this is an issue regarding formatting in Dreamweaver. Online I found that one can specify pixel dimensions in the images.xml file. Does anybody have any ideas? Its probably an easy thing.
    Thanks to everyone for coping with these details, and any help would be appreciated greatly.
    kind regards,
    Mr.V

    Hi
    There are a number of ways you may do this, the first would be to use the scale parameter for the flash player content, but the problem you will find is maintaining the aspect ratio and if your flv's are smaller the degradation in the quality when 'enlarging', see - http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14149.html.
    The second way would be to use a combination of actionscript and javascript to proportionally 'enlarge' the flv, again the above problems apply.
    Finally you could change the size of the flash player to fit your 'new' flv using javascript, but this method would in all probability present layout problems for your user, a small change would be o/k, but the size of change you are talking about would not. The design would have to incorporate a fixed size div for the flash player, and resizing the player would leave a large amount of white space.
    It is possible to do this using a liquid layout, but again this would cause problems with page rendering.

    How to take better photos on the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic
    One of the interesting points brought out in my mention of the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic in my feature on phone camera apertures and sensor sizes was that the 5800's camera was distinctly under-sized compared to the likes of Nokia's awesome N95 and N82:
    Quite a difference, but the presence of Carl Zeiss optics and the raw 3 megapixel resolution does leave some room for optimism. Yes, the camera on the 5800 XpressMusic isn't as good in all light conditions as the N82, for example, but as long as there's enough light then there's no reason not to still take some stunning photographs of your friends and the world around you.
    And so taking photos on the device. As you might expect, my tips are largely as they'd be for any other camera-toting smartphone, with just a few tweaks:
    The easiest way to start the Camera application is to press and hold the camera shutter key. Because Camera is kept loaded in memory on the 5800, it should appear almost instantaneously, ready for action. (Note that if you haven't used your 5800 for a minute or so previously, you may need to flick the keylock switch first)
    Don't worry too much about dust on the camera lens, a brief wipe on a soft cloth is all that's needed to get rid of any finger grease - if you get too zealous about cleaning the glass, you'll end up with hundreds of micro-scratches. These won't affect photos too much, but they will look ugly.
    Don't worry about changing 'scene mode' or other settings, most of them don't make any difference.
    As mentioned above, know that the 5800 XpressMusic's camera is on the small side, physically, so you'll need to have lots of light around to register on the small sensor. Sunlight is best, of course, but there are still wide variations in light levels on overcast days. Low light means potentially 'noisy' photos. And focussing won't be as accurate. Shooting snaps indoors will often produce disappointing results, but you may be able to help by hitting that big, thumb-friendly flash icon and setting flash to 'on'. This is called fill-in flash and for subjects a metre or so away in indistinct indoor lighting, can make a difference.
    The usual photo-taking tips apply, as with any camera phone: try to brace yourself when taking a photo, so that the device doesn't shake; wait a fraction of a second after the shutter sound before moving the phone down; think about the source of light and try to have it in the arc behind you if possible; for important static shots, take more than one, just in case - one may be sharper, better focussed or more shake-free.
    By default, geotagging of your photos is turned OFF. If you think you'll be wanting to place your photos on a map later on (e.g. on Flickr or Share on Ovi) then go into 'Options - Settings' and turn 'Show GPS info' on. As usual with GPS, be aware that getting a position fix may take a minute or so if you've moved a long way from the last time you used the phone's GPS. And it won't work indoors unless you're close to a big window and feely lucky... The geotagging algorithms do allow a certain time leeway, i.e. they'll accept a previous position fix provided it wasn't too long ago.
    Tapping on the envelope icon is the shortcut to use to fire your photo up to the world immediately - but that's another tutorial for another day!

  • How to Erase Safari Traces Completely?

    Hello. As the title says, I wish to erase all Safari traces(history, cookies etc.)completely so that no-one can recover it. I have got a good file shredder, and just in case I will do a 7-pass overwrite on free space. But I'm not sure what files or items I need to delete and how to do so.
    I have realized that if I just click on 'clear history', some traces are still left(auto-fill, cookies, flash cookies etc.). I only know a few locations of traces stored, but is there a tool or way that I can delete them all?
    I also tried Private Mode, but it's not so private...
    Any advice is appreciated,

  • Oracle Availability

    Hello, I have a real time application that use a Oracle 10g Database. I want to make a high availaibilty system (not is necessary 24x7, because the application only is use for the morning). Now, I'm testing in a server for test purpose. I need one database in production and one database in standby. If the first database fail, I need the other database (standby) works with all datas. I test oracle dataguard, but I don´t know make the system, I tried but I can not build it. However, I tried with the Oracle Streams. Oracle Streams is very easy, I use Oracle Enterprise Manager Console for create two scrips and a file .bat. I run the scripts and .bat file, and I have 2 database that replicate the datas. The database work well, but after one or two days, Oracle show me one error (Ora-00257). The error is because is 100% used the space of flashback. My server have a lot of space, I suppose that increase the size of flashback area the system will be work, but it solution it's not definitive, because before or later, the flashback area will be 100% used, I want one solution for I specified the size of flashback area, and the system delete the unnecessary space, for example if my flashback area is 3G then when the used size will be near to 80 or 90% of used space, the system delete the unnecessary space and control it self.
    Can anyone help me, please??

    I am not sure what problem you had while setting the dataguard. I personally believe dataguard is the best solution for your business case.
    There are many notes available on net / metalink on how to create physical standby.
    http://www.dbapool.com/articles/043005.html (good one)
    But if want to go with streams, No issues.
    You have to cleanup flashback area if you are storing archive logs and backup sets. Your error says that you have archive logs which filled the flash back area so backup them regularly and clean up the flashback area.

  • Changing index.html

    I want to call a web gallery from another page and not use the automatically generated Lightroom index.html as the homepage. There seem to be a number of index files generated by the template I used. index.html, index2.html, etc. How can I rename it to something like gallery.html and call it from another page? Thanks

    Maybe I'm not clear. My homepage is index.html. If I go to mysite.com/photos/index.html I am told the file does not exist. But it does exist. When I open index up it's filled with Flash information.
    There are no image files at that level however. All of the folders of images, thumbnails etc. are located deeper down. They are at: http://www.mysite.com/photos/bin/images/photos/index.html.When I open up this las index file it is the HTML one that I want to use.
    I'm surprised that I cannot type out the address above and see something. So do I move all of the supporting files in the last index up a couple levels or do I delete the Flash index.html and the HTML version of the index.html and resent from Lightroom?
    Thanks for your support.
    Ron
