Fill layer

I have a picture which I added a duplicate background layer.  I then added a fill layer--solid color.,  I am trying to erase parts o
f the fill layer to allow parts of the background duplicate layer to show through.  It will not erase--says its a shape layer and ha
s to do something with the vector mask.  I did this all the time in my elements 6.0 and it worked fine.  I have not added a shape la
yer and dont know why it keeps saying that.  When I said okay to that message, it erased but will not put the opacity back to 100% w
hen I need it to. PLEASE HELP!  I have a deadline!
Operating System: Windows 7
Photoshop Elements 8.0

With the eraser you can only adjust the flow. Try using a brush instead of the eraser. At the bottom of the tools pallet set the foreground color to black. Select a brush size, choose darken for the mode and 100% for opacity.

  • Can't create a solid color fill layer !!

I wonder if someone can help this PS newbie before I go insane ?
If I create a color fill layer & want to set it to a solid yellow color I can NOT get it to change color
no matter what I do on the color picker it remains white
I start clicking the small circle icon ( half black / white ) & selecting solid color
I click on the yellow bit of the vertical color bar & use the cursor to select the precise shade of yellow
to the top right there is a small rectangle
the color I choose - yellow - appears on the top half , the bottom half is white
I click OK so my small box is top-half yellow, bottom half white - the layer stays stubbornly white
shouldn't it go the color I choose ??
Now whats driving me mad is that last week I was doing this for fun
I had a jpeg file of a book page that I could create a highlighter pen effect by putting a yellow layer on top & sliding
the opacity down to 20% or whatever
I have opened one of the psd files I created & the color fill layer is yellow
the left-side palette thumbnail is yellow
when I edit the color the small rectangle is entirely yellow - top & bottom
I don't know what I am doing differently or not doing that I need to do ...
    any ideas gratefully received !

    YESSSS !!!!
sanity restored.....you, sir, are a genius.
    thankyou.

  • Problem with Photoshop Elements 11 - I am trying to create a fill layer

I am trying to create a fill layer.  I am really missing something but I don't know what it is.  I bring up a photo, go into Expert. i click layer at the top then click new fill layer and solid colour. It all works but then that is all that I can see and I cannot make it a background and put the picture in it.

Elements has its own  forum Photoshop Elements
Element most likely has more the one way to do that.   Photoshop does.  In Elements advance mode in the layer palette the is an Icon the can be use to add different types of layers and the layer menu also has items to add  different type of layers.

  • Grouping Adjustment layer with Gradient Fill layer

Page 151 of "The Missing Manual" suggests that one should be able to group a Levels Adjustment layer with a Gradient Fill layer so that the levels adjustment fades out to one side.
If I understand this correctly, the setup would be:
Levels Adjustment Layer (grouped with layer below)
Gradient Fill layer (with a gradient from Opaque to Transparent)
    Photo in Background layer
but I cannot get the desired effect of original picture on one side blending through to adjusted levels on the other.
I can get the desired effect if I dispense with the Gradient Fill layer and simply manually create the gradient on the mask of the Levels Adjustment layer but this loses the advantage of easy adjustment of the gradient.
[Thanks to those who answered my question about linking a mask to a layer. As this is a separate query, I thought it best to start a new topic]

    Sanders1,
I thought I'd try it, myself, and got results that I did not expect...
    http://www.pixentral.com/show.php?picture=1OVdT0C7oX46DsPm6TrfT5xxrm3h
    1 - The background image.
2 - I created a Gradient Fill layer using color (red) to transparent.
3 - I created a Levels Adjustment layer, set to reduce red and green,
    leaving a blue image.
4 - I grouped the Levels Adjustment layer with the Gradient Fill layer.
Is this the type of result you are seeing? I wonder what is the logic.

  • Pattern Fill layer not working out of layer panel

Banging my head against the monitor!  All of a sudden I cannot make a Pattern Fill layer from the layer panel (It's greyed out).  I can create one from Layer -> New Fill Layer -> Pattern.  Can anyone tell me the stupid key I bumped to make this happen.  I had just used it yesterday.  See attatched.
    Thanks in advance!
    P.S. I'm in 8bit RGB

Can't think of anything I have done since yesterday
Have you loaded MORE patterns? There's an enormous amount in there, See if deleting some or moving them helps- use preset manager for this

  • Could not complete your request because an adjustment or fill layer cannot be converted to the desti

Getteing the following message when dragging layers between files - Could not complete your request because an adjustment or fill layer cannot be converted to the destination document mode. Original file was client created and supplied. I have issolated the issue- two hue/saturation adjustment layers. I can and will just recreate them in the new file, but am looking for a root casue or long termsolution as it is a new client I believe will be sending me a good amount of production work.

Actually, 16-bit mode (some filters work in 8-bit only, though) is recommended to reduce the introduction of posterization which can easily arise with the relatively low precision of 8-bit mode. It doesn't benefit all work, but, especially if you use adjustments or low-opacity brushes, it's something to consider.

  • Fill layer with color

pse13  I am trying to fill layer.  The layer has a small rectangle on it and nothing else.  When I fill layer, it fills the entire canvas, not just the rectangle!  This used to work!

Go to File>new>blank file. Enter w, h, and resolution, & background color. This will be the canvas.
Set up the Rectangular marquee tool to fixed size, enter w & h dimensions for the rectangle
Use the Paint-bucket tool to fill the rectangle with color of choice as determined by the foreground color chip.

  • Photoshop CC doesn't allow painting on fill layer

I just installed photoshop CC and wanted to continue working on my old photoshop files (which I previously edited with photoshop CS3 and photoshop 7). I use a lot of fill layers to color my drawings because they are easier to edit later. Things is, in photoshop CC all my fill layers, news ones and the old ones, are locked. I cannot paint on them when I previously could.
There would be an error message asking me to rasterize it (which I don't want to, because it would make it hard to edit next time), and also a second message of "Content On The Layer Is Not Directly Editable".
Is there an option I can select to allow painting on Fill Layer and Adjustment layers again?

EDIT: I think I just found the solution to my own problem. Thought I'd keep the post here just in case anybody else has the problems. In phtoshop CC when you select the fill layer, a selection boundary by default appears on the color or adjustment. I had to select the mask (the BnW thumbnail) instead. Then photoshop would let me paint on the fill/adjustment layer.
If anybody knows anyway to let me select the BnW mask by default feel free to reply

  • Fill Layer problems Elements 8

I am using templates and the tutorial (from creator video) said to click shape to fill, the open file for fill content, drag and center image to template file, then in layers panel right click image file-press alt key and drag to line above the shape to fill. When you get the "funny" circle release and the shape will be filled. Well this don't work. However, I did figure out that turning the fill image into a fill using-edit, define pattern then clicking the shape to fill and choosing edit, fill layer served the same purpose and did work. Key word is did. Now this method don't work correctly, instead the fill pattern covers transforms the shape into a large square and covers the entire image.
Please any help correcting this would be wonderful, I am at my wits end with this program.

The best way I can think of is through the video itself, This link will bring up the video

Try from the layers pallet after highlighting your background copy layer. You should have dropdown menus for blend modes and opacity.

  • Clouds Fill Layer

The Clouds filter has been unchanged for years. I suggest an updated version as a Fill Layer. Double-clicking on the thumbnail would bring up a Palette where you would select the foreground and background colors, and a Scale control, which I've always missed with the current filter.

But that would just create a new rendered layer. If you scale that down, you loose the fill on the sides. I want something that will adjust the parameters, especially Scale, on the fly, as you can with the Pattern and Gradient Fill Layers.
Like here, I started with a 1600x1200 pixel image, ran Clouds, scaled the image down to 25%, and rean clouds again on the right side, to show the difference in scale.
I want to be able to go continuously from one to the other, without having to resize the entire document. You could also stack several of these layers, and adjust the Scaling for each, to build up more complex effects, that you could continue to adjust.
Also: indepenent scaling for vertical and horizontal (with a button to link them), and a button to re-seed the generator.

  • Photoshop CS6 Beta does NOT fill Layer with 50% Gray when in CMYK-Mode

    1. Open a CMYK-Document
    2. Create a new empty Layer
    3. Use the "Fill..." command with the option "50% Grey"
    4. Result should be: 50% Cyan, 50% Magenta, 50% Yellow, 50% Black, but is 49% Cyan, 40% Magenta, 39% Yellow, 27% Black
-> while this function is normally used to create a layer with the blending mode "Overlay" to have a basis for an "invisible" layer where you can lighten/darken the image or add noise to it, the function "fill with 50% Grey" is malfunctioning now, because this affects an image modification instead of being invisible.

    There's a definite difference between Photoshop CS5 and CS6:
Noting that the B value is now 50% in the HSB readout, could it be that this may be an intentional redefinition of ''50% Gray''?

  • Collapse multiply layers with different transparency into a single solid filled layer

    Hi,
I want to collapse a complex scene with all different layers and different transparency into a single layer (or as few as possible) to optimize the flash file for online (were experince proformance issues).
I have tried the combine and manually copying pasting into one layer but it cuts the fill below and replace with transparent fill. I want to have a end file that is 100% solid.
    Is this possible?
    Thank you
    Darren

You can create groups and then paste all your groups in a single layer. That won't 'cut' them into each other and the transparency should be maintained. It won't help you with performance though, since the complexity remains the same.
If you have tons of complex vector shapes, it might be a good idea to create a transparent PNG bitmap from illustrator.
That may increase your filesize but it will give you a tremendous performance boost.

  • Keyboard shortcut for filling layer with color are opposite on my PS CS6 OSX install, Help?

    Hello all,
I'm a bit of a noob, and following a tutorial….and found something strange and wonder if you might help me figure what's happening.
I have Photoshop Extended CS6 on a macbook pro (late 2011).
    I'm running OSX v 10.7.5
I'm following along and the instructor added a new layer. I did this.
He then filled the layer with white which is his background color (he has black foreground, white background). I have the same fore/background colors.
Now, I thought on mac that to fill with foreground color you hit Apple+Delete  and to fill with background you hit Option+Delete
It is doing the exact OPPOSITE for me. I hit Apple+Delete (or even backspace)  and it fills with my background color which is white
If I hit Option+Delete (or backspace) it fills with my foreground color.
I've tried looking in the Edit Keyboard shortcuts area…but I don't see these settings anywhere.
I do have an external keyboard  hooked to my mac. It is a 3rd party one, but seems to work in ever other way normally.
    Keyboard here is:  http://pckeyboard.com/page/UKBD/UB40P4A
Any suggestions why my keyboard shortcut for filling a layer with color might be reversed?
    Thanks in advance,
    CC

option-delete is, and always has been, fill with foreground.
a 1 second google search would have informed you of this.
    Thanks for the reply.
I did do a Google and I got this:
    http://blog.coghillcartooning.com/84/tip-keyboard-shortcut-to-fill-a-photoshop-layer-or-se lection-with-the-background-or-foreground-color/
And from that I got the option-delete was background, and apple-delete was foreground.
    Hence my confusion...
Thanks for the reply, I guess I should check 2-3 sites each time I google for keyboard shortcuts for PS.

  • Remove vector mask from fill layer Photoshop CC

I'm using Photoshop CC and I can't remove, disable or rasterize a vector mask that is applied to a fill or gradient layer.
    Am I missing something?

One way to delete the vector mask is to hold down the Alt+Ctrl (Option+Cmd) keys and
drag down from the fill/gradient/pattern layer icon in the layers panel to the trash can at the bottom of the layers panel.
You can disable the "vector mask" by shift clicking on the Shape Path icon in the Properties panel.
One way to replicate rasterizing a vector mask is to Ctrl (Cmd) click on the shape layer icon in the layers panel, add a
layer mask and then delete the vector mask as described above.
