Fill mis-behavior

Win7 Pro, 64-bit. 16Gg RAM
I am new to Illustrator. I have the CS4 version, and chose (maybe bad idea for someone new to the SW) to use it to make vector a scan I was placing in a Photoshop (CS6) document. When Placing I of course put it on its own layer and it became a Smart Object.   I now  have uncontrolled fill behavior.
First, I am trying in Illustrator to get different areas as defined by a bunch of paths to be black or transparent (or white if that's what I have to have). There is one all-inclusive "outer" path, and small interior shapes. The art I scanned called for one contiguous shape in black -- but with cut outs (closed interior areas) to be transparent -- therefore all these paths/borders, making shapes needed for definition of the silhouette, which I turned into paths in Photoshop and then opened the file in Illustrator.
As Illustrator booted I noticed that this CS4 version seemed to be having trouble with a Registry setting/item. During boot the sw showed an error about the Registry and called an Adobe routine for reg fix. This happens every time I boot Illustrator. I mention this in case it is relevant (not likely, though.)
The desired result is a black fill of the outside path with all the narrow cutout shapes "inside" remaining transparent. I'd settle for white! I have selected all the inside paths in Illustrator and set them to the front while setting the outside path to be "at the back". I expected the fill to be behind the other shapes. I can still select them through the black fill and specify a color fill but then the dialog/tool is finished the shape still does not show against the black.
I can imagine that an inside path at the top level cannot force transparency down through the other fills. Perhaps I have to close off segments of the whole background fill and fill those one by one.
suggestions, anyone?

Monika, Thank you! I am right near the deadline for this, so all help is appreciated. more below.
Client-supplied art: a scan of black paper cut with exacto knife. I took the big bitmap and made a vector file. Those thin slivers are each defined by their own path. In this version I have different stroke widths selected throughout the set. I will research "compound paths".
I want the inside black with transparent cutouts.Probably no visible stroke because the final product is just black ink on a clear label.
Again, thanks,

  • Safari 3 auto-fill different behavior?

    It seems that in earlier versions when I went to a password login page that was stored in auto-fill, the number would automatically fill in when loading the page. Now it seems that I need to at least enter the first character into the login field and then a little drop-down appears allowing me to choose it, even if there is only one choice. Then the password automatically gets filled in. This is annoying to me as I don't always remember the login I've used. Can someone confirm that this change has happened or am I doing something wrong?

    For whatever reason it appears the password field you are interested in is being treated as a choice field instead of a password field. Although the behavior for password fields has not changed (I think) the behavior for choice fields HAS changed.
    It used to be that your last choice used was pre-filled into the choice field when you went to the page, and before you typed ANYTHING into that field. Also if you started typing, choices that matched what you had typed so far used to show up in most recently used order with the field autofilled to the one most recently used that matched what you have typed so far.
    The behavior now, apparently, is that the choice field is NOT pre-filled (if you have typed more than one choice into that field before, and if you start typing the list shows items matching what you have typed so far in sorted order instead of most recently used order -- which makes it less likely that the one on the top of the list is the one you want.
    You can edit the Autofill records in Safari for any given web page to make it forget about previous choices, and then the next time you type in the value for a field on that page it will be recorded as your only choice (so far). But that's kind of crufty.

  • Flex 4 UI Layout Constraint mis-behavior

    Hello,
    So here is the problem, below is basically my application wireframe in mxml. The problem comes in when I'm looking at a report component, so the reportComponents is visible, not the filterComponents.
    What is happening is the UI element is sliding outside the container to the left when the browser resizes, it literally slides right off the screen.
    I have tried defining layouts and layout contraints and other various fixes to no avail.
    Can anyone help me?

    It's really hard to tell what is going on without being able to run your sample.  My wild guess would be that this is working as it should since you set <views:Reports id="ReportsPanel" right="15" ... which means that the panel will always be glued to the right of its parent container.  So if that parent container gets smaller then the reports panel will move to the left to ensure the right="15" constraint is satisfied.

  • Brush Tool (Mis)Behavior in CS4

    I've been experiencing a recurring problem with the brush tool as well as several other (but not all) tools. When opening multiple documents (RAW > TIFF) as is typical for my workflow, I can only paint on a mask, replace color, etc. on the first file and then the tool(s) stop functioning when attempting to work on the remaining files. I've attempted to correct this issue by resetting all tools and preferences to no avail. The only solution I've been able to come up with is to close all files and restart PS CS4. The problem does not occur if I open, work and close one file at a time but this is not a desirable workflow.
    System is XP Pro on historic 3.0 GHz P4 machine; 512 MB NVidia video card with 260.99 driver update running dual 20" monitors; 2.4 GB available RAM w/70% allocated to PS; Open GL enabled w/advanced options all disabled (runs best this way); 11.02 CS4 update is installed; driver for Wacom tablet is 6.1.6-7. Other than some slightly sticky scrubby sliders, CS4 runs well. Any suggestions for solving the tool problem would be much appreciated!

    A bit of a longshot, but try disabling the Advanced OpenGL drawing settings.  Edit - Preferences - Performance, then press the [Advanced Settings...] button, then UNcheck all the boxes.  Make sure you restart Photoshop after changing these.
    I mention this because I personally had a troublesome system that was stabilized by doing exactly as I noted above.
    If it doesn't help, make sure to remember to set them back to what they were.
    If it does help, you can try re-enabling the settings one by one until you isolate the one causing the problem.  Me, I just left them all disabled and CS4 started to behave very well.  I didn't notice performance degradation,.

  • In Calendar app for iOS 6, behavior of badges is inconsistent

    My company has a good number of iPhones and iPads using Activesync to access our Exchange 2007 email environment. We have noticed that the behavior of "badges" in the Calendar seems inconsistent or inapporpriate.
    Example: UserA has iPhone and iPad, both running iOS 6, and Outlook 2007 under Windows 7.. Both iOS devices share the same AppleID.
    UserA receives a Calendar invitation. The invitation shows up on all three devices as an email. The "badge" count indicating the number of unresponded-to Calendar invitations count increments by 1 on iPad and iPhone. So far, so good.
    UserA opens the invitation on the iPad and accepts or delines the invitation. The badge count decrements by one on both iPad and iPhone. Again, so far, so good.
    But if UserA opens the invitation on the iPhone and accepts/declines, the badge count decrements on the iPhone, but NOT on the iPad. Doesn't make any difference how long he waits; refreshing mail on the iPad has no effect on badge count.
    This (mis) behavior seems quite consistent. Do we have a setting wrong somewhere, or is this a known bug? I should say the badge counts on a number of my iPhone and iPad applications behave in, let's say, an unusual or uninformative manner. But this behavior in an enterprise environment is driving my CIO crazy.

    Search the app store. There are several MS Office compatible apps. Quickoffice and Documents to Go are two to look into, but there are more. Numbers can certainly be used "offline" and personally I prefer it to many of the othes available (and you should be able to download a prior version: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5919). Depending on the specific needs, however, there may not be a substitute for Excel on a computer. No iOS spreadsheets apps handle pivot tables, for example, or include the ability to use macros.

  • Google visited links indication failure

    Background
    Normally when browsers load a page they render previously visited links listed in History in a distinctive default colour. Style statements on the page, or elsewhere, can override this colour.
    Some pages use JavaScript to dynamically change a link's colour without reloading the page. This is particularly useful when the link opens another window.
    All this worked efficiently with Google searches until its JavaScript was changed a few years ago. Google now modifies the URL of links opening in other windows so that the URL is no longer the same as the one stored in History prior to the latest browser launch. The modified links contain random characters so that each launch of the browser contains different URLs for the same page hence inhibiting normal visited link indication.
    Google visited links indication failure occurs for links that open another window, frame or tab caused by:
    user's Google settings or
    selecting a new window by right clicking or
    using a page or link which puts 'newwindow=1' in the search results URL.
    Google visited links indication failure can be avoided by never shutting down the browser or by not invoking a new window.
    RemedyI have developed a Launch Agent containing a bash script which modifies History.plist items containing Google redirects. This works well but I have only been able to use the script after quitting from Safari so I run the Launch Agent at login or via the following AppleScript:tell application "Safari" to quit without saving
    do shell script "launchctl start reset-safari"
    Questions
    Does anybody know of any similar developments or workarounds?
    Does anybody know of a way to do this without quitting from Safari? ie is it possible to tell Safari to reload its memory without it overwriting the History.plist file first?

    Switch to Bing.  Much easier.  I've been using that search engine by default for several years now, specifically because of this and other related Google search (mis)behaviors.
    With Bing, it's possible to cut-n-paste the web site's URL directly out of the Bing results without having to visit the page, and without having to resort to Safari extensions.
    Bing also tends to get less "reverse ranking algorithm engineering", which means that the Bing results tend to be less filled with cruft, as compared with the results for common Google searches.
    Once in a while I'll use DogPile (which searches across multiple search engines), or a specific engine at DuckDuckGo, Blekko or Google for a specific (and usually more arcane) search query.   (But I was doing that with Google, too.)  Each search provider has different coverage with their web crawlers, and different ranking schemes.

  • Problem with "SELECT...FOR UPDATE OF..." and "POST command" combination

    Problem with "SELECT...FOR UPDATE OF..." and "POST command" combination
    Problem in committing transactions in Multiple Forms (Oracle Forms) with POST built-in command:
    Consider that the following statements are written in WHEN-WINDOW-CLOSED trigger of a called form.
    Statements in called form (Form name: FORM_CHILD):
    go_block('display_block') ;
    do_key('execute_query') ;
    -- Data from table_b will be populated in this block, based on the value of COLUMN_1 obtained
    -- from TABLE_A.
    -- Example: If the value of COLUMN_1 is 10, then all the matching records from TABLE_B, which
    -- are inserted with value 10 in TABLE_B.COLUMN_1 will be fetched and shown here.
    if user_choice = 'YES' then
    commit ;
    else
    rollback ;
    end if ;
    Statements in calling forms:
    There are two calling forms having following statements and it is going to call the above said called form.
    CALLING FORM 1
    Statements in KEY-COMMIT trigger:
    post;
    call_form(form_child, no_activate) ;
    Statements in ON-INSERT trigger:
    select column_1
    from table_a
    for update of column_1
    where column_2 = 'X' ;
    update table_a
    set column_1 = column_1 + 1
    where column_2 = 'X' ;
    insert into table_b ...;
    insert into table_b ...; Statements in KEY-COMMIT trigger:
    post;
    call_form(form_child, no_activate) ;
    CALLING FORM 2:
    Statements in ON-INSERT trigger:
    select column_1
    from table_a
    for update of column_1
    where column_2 = 'X' ;
    update table_a
    set column_1 = column_1 + 1
    where column_2 = 'X' ;
    insert into table_b ...;
    insert into table_b ...;
    insert into table_b ...;
    Our understanding:
    Assume that both the forms are running from two different machines/instances, issuing commit at the same time. In this case, forms will start executing the statements written in ON-INSERT trigger, the moment POST command is executed. Though the commit is issued at the same time, according to oracle, only one of the request will be taken for processing first. Assume that calling form 1 is getting processed first.
    So, it fetches the value available in COLUMN_1 of TABLE_A and locks the row from further select, update, etc. as SELECT...FOR UPDATE command is used (note that NOWAIT is not given, hence the lock will be released only when COMMIT or ROLLBACK happens) and proceed executing further INSERT statements. Because of the lock provided by the SELECT...FOR UPDATE command, the statements in calling form 2 will wait for the resource.
    After executing the INSERT statements, the FORM_CHILD is called. The rows inserted in to TABLE_A will be queried and shown. The database changes will be committed when user closes the window (as COMMIT is issued in its WHEN-WINDOW-CLOSED trigger). Then the SELECT...FOR UPDATE lock will be released and calling form 2's statements will be executed.
    Actual happenings or Mis-behavior:
    Calling form 2 starts executing INSERT statements instead of waiting for SELECT...FOR UPDATE lock. Also, the value selected from TABLE_A.COLUMN_1 is same in both the calling forms, which is wrong.
    The rows inserted into TABLE_B are having similar COLUMN_1 values in calling form 2 and they are fetched and shown in the called form FORM_CHILD.
    Note that in calling form 2 also POST only is issued, but the changes posted there are accessible in calling form 1 also, which is wrong.
    Kindly suggest us as to how to fix above problem. It will be much use, if you can send us the information regarding the behavior of Oracle Forms POST built-in also.
    Our mail ID: [email protected]
    Thanks a lot in advance.

    You have several problems:
    1. On-Insert will ONLY run if you have created a new record in a base-table block. If you haven't done that, then the POST command will not cause it to run.
    2. Select for update without a "no wait" will lock records for the first form, but when the second form tries this, it will hit the ORA-00054 exception, and will NOT wait. The only way you could make it wait is to issue an UPDATE sql command, which is not such a good way to go.
    All POST does is issues SQL insert or update commands for any changes the user has made to records in a form's base-table blocks, without following with a Commit command.
    Also understand that Commit is the same as Commit_Form, and Rollback is the same as Clear_Form. You should read up on these in the Forms help topics.

  • Hierarchy Viewer difference in behaviour between ADF 11.1.1.5 & 11.1.1.6

    Hi All,
    We are having some problems with the Hierarchy Viewer and we were hoping that someone might be able to shed some light on this issue.
    In ADF 11.1.1.5 we have used the attribute displayLevelsChildren which shows how many levels of children would be displayed (if those levels are available of course). We have assigned a value to a select one choice that would set those levels and allow for our user to customise this value and see the levels on right hand side.
    You can see the behaviour that I am referring to in the following demo:
    http://jdevadf.oracle.com/adf-richclient-demo/faces/feature/hv/hvGroupNode.jspx
    I know that this is an 11.1.2, but this has been the same demo for quite a while, when you change the Show Level on the left, the hierarchy viewer gets updated.
    I have created a simple app that illustrates the problem, and when I run it under 11.1.1.5 it performs as expected, while when we run it on 11.1.1.6 it doesn't refresh the levels

    Hi,
    the only change is that 11.1.1.6 supports HTML 5 rendering. So you may want to check if the rendering is in Flash or HTML5. If the rendering is in Flash and the mis-behavior shows then the only suggestion I can give is (in case you have a support contract) to file a service request with customer support

    Anyone... anyone... Bueler?

  • Can't send mail to people with "åäö" in their names

    This possible bug seems ridiculous, but it should be easy to reproduce, if it indeed is a bug.
    I've got a Scandinavian letter Ä in my name. If I try to send mail with my real name OR to an address that has a firstname/lastname with ÅÄÖ in them, the mail won't leave the iPhone. I see the progress bar "Sending..." but it won't move. There's no error message. I simply end up with an unsent mail (which, btw, I haven't find a way to delete. There's no Outbox folder in the phone.)
    The mail works fine, if I send mail to names that use A instead of Ä, that is, convert the names to ASCII. It doesn't matter which SMTP server I use, as long as the server itself works. It's the same (mis)behavior with MobileMe, Gmail and the local 3G operator.
    Can someone else reproduce this? For example, set your email account to:
    Föö Bär <[email protected]>
    or try sending mail to that address from your iPhone.
    Thanks for any ideas or confirmations.

    Looking at the XCode Organizer's logs for the iPhone, here's what it says when trying to send mail to people who have "åäö" in their name:
    For Gmail with SSL: Thu Jul 17 20:56:59 unknown MobileMail[111] <Warning>: Exception raised while processing message body loading queue: * -[NSConcreteData initWithContentsOfFile:options:error:]: nil file argument
    For my ISP's smtp server without SSL: Thu Jul 17 20:53:25 unknown MobileMail[111] <Warning>: ERROR: The connection to the server "(null)" failed.
    For MobileMe's smtp server with SSL: Thu Jul 17 20:58:27 unknown MobileMail[111] <Warning>: ERROR: The recipient "<i've hidden my email address...>" was rejected by the server.
    Note: all those servers do send mail = work just fine, if I don't send email to addresses that have "åäö" in them. But in real life that's hard, because the Reply button automatically grabs the recipient's name from the From field. And often the +original sender+ has sent the mail with his/her real name = with Scandinavic letters. Replying to that mail gets stuck.

  • Warning: you have exceeded the limit of 100 nested folders

    in red letters in Disk Utility. Machine slows and slows. Where, how, why, and whence do these folders get nested? and how to unnest, which one doesnt know which they are or where they are, out of thousands of folders? No utility out there can help, it seems.

    I have the exact same problem. I have an iMac G3,
    600MHz, 512MB RAM, 40 GB capacity, running 10.4.7. I
    have been using Apple Macs since their innovation.
    My computer is running a little slower, but I do not
    know if "Nesting of folders has exceeded the
    recommended limit of 100" is the culprit.
    I use Photoshop (on 9.2.2) quite a lot, but otherwise
    I use 10.4.7 all the time for everything else. I have
    searched the Information pages and Discussion panels
    for an explanation and solution, all to no avail.
    Nothing dastardly appears to have happened or about
    to happen to my computer, so I shall just keep on
    using it regardless. In the meantime, however, I
    shall keep looking for an explanation and I hope, a
    solution.

    thanks for your interest. I dont know what causes all those nested folders; but I am on 10.4.8 now and no change in (mis)behavior. I run a G4 with now with 1600 speed from a replaced heart or whatever, and have 1.25 G Ram.. I find that I can locate all Empty folders with Spring cleaning, and delete them and get the machine running better and normally. I also clean up regularly with DISK WARRION, which seems to be hecessary, as well as Drive Genius from ProSoft Engineering. Meanwhile, I buy lottery tix, in hopes of a later Mac Pro desktop

  • IPhoto launches with pictures showing then quits

    I am using iPhoto 4.03 with OS 10.3.9, it has never given me any problems until I installed the latest Security Update from Apple. The first time I went to launch IPhoto after the install it quit on start up, then came up with the dialog box asking if I wanted to send a bug report to Apple. I have tried all the fixes mention in these Discussions. Rebuilding IPhoto, removing iPhoto plist. preferences, removing the three thumbnails, removing iPhoto folder from pictures folder, ran utilities repairing permissions. IPhoto did launch when I used a different account but as soon as I tried to import new pictures it crashed.
    i mac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   192 MB SDRAM

    Chuck,
    If you've repaired permissions and the (mis)behavior of iPhoto is similar when accessed from separate user accounts, then I would be tempted to reinstall the application, and see if that changes anything.
    If you choose to reinstall, make sure you delete the iPhoto receipts .pkg (from the Library folder) before the reinstallation, and don't forget to pay a visit to Software Updates (in the Apple Menu) after the reinstall.

  • "One and Done" Printing, Corrupt PDFs

    I'm hoping someone has encountered this odd printing mis-behavior and might be able to offer a solution:
    Upon printing multi-page PDFs to an HP 5640 from Tiger, my Powerbook invariably prints the first page (which, of course, is the LAST page of the document), but as the printer nears the bottom of the page, it pauses, waits for a minute or so (during which time the Deskjet 5600 utility registers the printer as printing subsequent pages), then releases that page, calling it a day. Of course, every remaining page of the document still remains undone!
    I can print the document by initiating a Print command for EACH INDIVIDUAL PAGE, by specifying "Print: From Page 20 to Page 20," "Print: From Page 19 to Page 19," and so on (and have done this for the last few weeks, but this is no way to live!
    On a possibly related note, the PDFs that I am trying to print often corrupt upon trying to save them to a folder, going through the motions of saving but revealing themselves as "empty" PDFs (the drawer shows an equivalent number of blank pages).
    I've tried repairing permissions, to no avail. Might this be a job for Disk Utility or some other repair-oriented program, or might trashing the .plist file for Preview be the best course of action?
    Any help I can find will be greatly appreciated!
    Regards,
    Darren

    I found the answer by myself!
    When I opened a PDF document in "Preview" instead of using Adobe Reader, I was able to print without any problem.
    Apparently there is something in the Adobe print function that is not working correctly. Hopefully it can be fixed sometime; otherwise, I'll just use "Preview" exclusively.

  • InDesign CC User Interface Preferences not sticking

    You're not my father, you killed my father! I'll never join you!
    Help I don't want to join the DARK side. InDesign won't remember my user interface preferences. I switch to light, close the app, and it goes back to dark (medium dark) next time I open. I am on Windows 7.
    Anyone else notice this (mis)behavior or have a solution?
    Ben Dupre

    Bob, thanks.
    I didn't install any updates today. Would that happen without consent?
    I did notice my recent file menu is also gone though. Is there a config file I can save that can be reapplied after an update?

  • Outbox populating with old sent messages

    I am on a macbook with OS 10.5.8. My outbox is populated with an email response that I successfully sent to the recipient a month ago. When I check for new mail, it resends that message in the outbox to the recipient and the next email I had sent after that a month ago populates the outbox. I have been resending old emails everytime I check for new mail. Deleting the mail in the outbox only makes the next old email in line populate the outbox. Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? Thanks!

    I'm seeing the same kind of [mis]behavior. The outbox ALWAYS has one email in it which is chosen from (usually) the SENT folder, but not always. If I delete this one email, the outbox count remains at zero and selecting any other folder and returning reveals a new bogus email stuck in the outbox.
    I tried deleting the OUTBOX / mbox folder but that makes no difference.
