Filling color in layered objects (a few circiles on top of each other)

Hello all,
I am new to Illustrator. I want to thank you any advices from you all first.
Currently I am working on my first Logo design project. There are a number of circles on top of each other. The goal is to fill each circle with different colour.
I read some other posts, they mentioned about the different objects are in different layers, so that it is difficult to fill colour individually. Any suggestions?
I tried to make the image to Live Paint, but the option is in gray, so that I cannot change to Live Paint. And if I try to fill the colour, there are nothing happen.
The file (in .AI format) can be download from this link.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/olyyol
And one last question, after I completed the Logo, is that possible to just extract the Logo itself rather than save the whole paper? What type of format I should save with if I want to make it eventually jpg file.
Thank you very much for your help again.
Pete

You seem to be complicating this a little more than it need be.
here's video of what I did always keep it simple.
http://mysite.verizon.net/wzphoto/Paint.mov
As for what you did was possibly open another file or took an extra step.
But to do what you want is  a very simple matter you should be able to figure this out yourself but i am going to try to show how you are making it comlicated rathe than easy.
First you fill one part with the color you want then
you fill the other part with the same color

  • How do I fill color into an object drawn with the brush tool?

    I'm watching a tutorial to learn more, and one think I still don't know is how to fill something with color that is drawn out via the brush tool. Say I draw a black circle and want to fill the color to green. I'm not talking about Live Paint were you select an object. I see in the tutorial the guys selects some tool but I can't see what it is.

    You can fill any closed path by simply setting its fill color in the color palette... Paths can be smoothed with teh smooth tool. Please refer to the online help for specifics. Just watching tutorials doesn't necessarily teach you everything....

  • Fill color not bound by paths???

    Greetings. For some reason unknown to me, when I select a fill color for an object, the fill color expands beyond the boundary of the object. I've tried working with the pathfinder tools, specifically the Unite function as well as the Object, Group function with still no luck. Although they may appear as one outline, many of the strokes were laid seperately which is why I thought the Group and Unite functions would be the key. BTW, Almost forgot, tried the Compound path function as well which did alter the area of the fill but wasn't able to control it(fill) though. Any ideas how to accomplish a simple fill within the boundaries of a complex object?
    Please help... already spent several hours trying to figure this out on my own.

    Best way to do this is make the outline one path then the toes are drawn over that path now you fill only the foot path.
    Since the toe divider lines are on top of the foot path you do not have to restack the paths.

  • Layering Objects w/ Conditional Formatting

    I have a report w/ conditional formatting. In one instance, object a needs to display, and in another, object b needs to display; however, they both need to be in the same place in the layout. Every time I try to simply place one on top of the other, it obviously doesn't work. How can I layer them on top of each other w/o them being put into the same frame?

    Brice,
    you can do this without loosing the overview about the objects, when you use anchors. On both object you need a format trigger to enable/disable formatting vice versa. Anchor the left upper corner of object b to the left upper corner of object a set the properties for horizontally and vertically collapsing of the anchor to "yes". When Object a was not formatted, the anchor will collabse and the left upper corner of object b will be exact on the position of left upper corner of object a.

  • Confusion about how object interact and are aware of each other

    I have this java applet
    Two of the classes it contains are the main class with the init method and a UI class that is code for the interface.
    the main class instantiates the UI class anonymously (i think you call it that) i.e it does not put it into a named reference it just creates it by calling new without assigning it to anything.
    When I click on a button from the UI class I want to call a method in the main class...but how so?
    At first I tried to make the function i want to call in the main class static so I could easily call it from the UI class...but then it began to get complex...so i just sent a reference of the main class to the UI class via its constructer.
    Now i want the main class to update a JTable in the UI class, but how? It does not have any reference to the UI class.
    What is really the standard method of operation for this sort of thing when objects have to be calling methods of each other. How do I make them aware of each other.

    the best way to do it is like this:
    public class Main {
      //this is the main class
      private static class MyUIFrame extends JFrame {
        //create the class. It is useable within Main this way
        //static means it doesn't implicitly 'know' about the Main class. You can also
        //remove this and call Main.this to use Main's methods
    }Edited by: tjacobs01 on Apr 11, 2009 2:28 AM

  • Click for Fill Color, Right Click for Stroke Color

    I'm constantly adding my intended Fill Color to my Strokes and vice versa.
    It's often laborious to manage which is active, Fill or Stroke when selecting colors from Swatches.
    I just noticed that Right Clicking on a Swatch doesn't do anything, so there's nothing to stop Illustrator from getting a quicker, easier, sexier way to apply color to Fills or Strokes.
    Regardless of which is the active attribute in the Tools Panel, simply clicking a Swatch would assign the color to the selected object's Fill.
    And Right Clicking would assign the swatch color to its Stroke.
    Yah?
    That's how it works in Corel DRAW and coloring things were sooo much easier back when I used it.
    Wouldn't it be simple to add a Preference to choose between the traditional behavior and this new one?

    Do not you miss it first.
    This idea was reported many times, even a few years ago on this forum.
    Ai adopts with great difficulty and obvious improvements have already discovered.
    I understand the search for his own good idea but I do not understand why I have square wheels when the world no longer revolves on the wheel?
    For me a good idea to apperance palette. I hoped that it will be improved in the CS5 to copy features such as single apperance. But none of that.
    Adobe has long could provide a mechanism to notify the idea and the opportunity to vote for him in order to predict the most needed solution.
    But for some reason do not do this and people are discouraged.

    I just do not know which way to go illustrator. I was very discouraged to invest and Ai.
    I was very discouraged to invest and Ai. I do not know whether the moment does not appear in another completely new applications. I hope that it will be New Ai.

  • Fill color is outside the path

    One of the graphic elements I was given has me stumped.  When I select it, I can see the path of the object and see that it has a fill color and no stroke.  However, the fill color extends outside the path. This ends up causing me a headache when I try to slice and save for web.  I can never get the result I want in a PNG.  I always end up with a few pixels more or less wrong on one or more sides.  Help!

    pcdavis,
    You may have Effect>Offset Path applied; you may see it in the Appearance palette/panel, and click the Reduce to Basic Appearance button there.

  • Automating coloring of known objects

    Hi,
    I figured I'd turn here for illustrator help since I'm a scientist and not terribly familiar with all the in's and out's of this program. I'm using Illustrator CS2.
    I have a diagram of a 2D RNA structure. I want to give each nucleotide a numeric label and then write a program to change the color of a given nucleotide based on its number. That is to say, suppose I have a sequence ATTG. I want to label A-1, T-2, T-3, G-4. I then want to change the color of ATTG to other things from black by having a list. Make A blue, T green, T blue, G red. So I guess really my two questions are: How do I go about labeling the individual bases/objects and after doing so, is there a way to tell Illustrator to change an objects color based on a list structure. Thank you all for any help in advance.

    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    They are individual objects. Text it appears. Each one is a text object.
    Good. Then I'm going to assume, after opening the PDF in Illustrator, we now have an Illustrator document in which each text character is an individual text object.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    Actually, I want to be able to color each object, independently, based on experimental data that will change each time....Sometimes A-1 will be green, sometimes red, sometimes black....For each of 1800 objects...[Emphasis mine.]
    (I just love it when people ask "How can I do this?" and then casually inject schema-wrecking additional requirements later.)
    We have now ruled out any kind of Symbols-based solution for this, because, contrary to what was originally implied, the As (for example) are not instances of the same entity.
    To my mind, we have also ruled out any practical application of a Variables-based solution, because Illustrator's Variable types are Visibility, Link, Text, and Graph Data. The attribute that is required to be variable is none of those four; it is color.
    Therefore, at least at this point, a scripting solution seems to be the most promising approach.
    Next question: How many colors, maximum, will be involved? Assuming there are, say, 2540 textFrame objects containing an A, surely you don't intend a potential of 2540 different colors for the As?
    Knowing nothing about the actual information being represented by the diagram, and having so far received only piecemeal requirements, I have to make several other assumptions. Please correct me if any of these are wrong:
    The diagram is fixed. For a given diagram, the count, location, and text content of the text objects will not change. You're not going to be changing a A to a B, for example. You're not going to add a spur to the diagram with additonal text objects. You're not going to be moving any of the text objects.
    The ONLY attribute of the text objects you require to edit by applying different datasets is their color.
    There will be a separate data table corresponding to each such fixed diagram. Each row in the data table will correspond to one and only one text object in the diagram.
    function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
    I assume I'm going to have to go in and label/select/name each object, but if I can automate the coloring (based on data that will be in either a text or a excel file) I should only have to do it once on my reference file. Then each time I want to color it, I'll open my ref file, script out the coloring, then save it as EXP X.
    You're asking how to work Illustrator here. And you've admitted being a complete beginner with Illustrator. So please don't run ahead by making assumptions about the necessary workflow. That just confuses the discussion. We are trying to think this through systematically, as I squeeze out of you the actual situation and the actual requirements. This is not a problem of data-exchange mechanism. It's an object-to-data correlation problem.
    Here's where we stand right now: You have an Illustrator file containing thousands of individual but identical textFrame objects, each containing one character. All characters are presently the same color (assumed to be black). You want to individually apply fill colors to those characters, according to some data-driven criteria. That necessitates associating each individual text object in the Illustrator file with one row of your data (which may exist externally, or may exist internally--we don't need to go there yet; we'll worry about the data mechanism later).
    To pursue this with Illustrator, the first task is going to be deciding upon a means by which to assign some Illustrator-understood object-level attribute that can serve as a unique identifier for each text object.
    Based on what we know so far, the only obvious Illustrator-understood differentiation among the whole set of text objects is their text content: Each text object contains one of an assumed four different text characters. That gives us four subsets.
    So, for now, think in the context of one of those four subsets: The ones containing the A character. In order to associate each A with a particular row in a data table, you're going to have to have some means by which to address each individual A.
    Simply assigning a serial number to them, like "A1" thru "A2540", makes them targetable, and would be fairly trivial from a scripting standpoint. But a dumb serial number in no way relates to a particular row in the data that will, in turn, be used to assign their color. So before proceeding with that, it would be wise to consider whether there is any other criteria that might be leveraged to minimize the work of associating a particular text object with a particular data row. Otherwise, a two-step process will be required:
    1. Assign meaningless unique identifiers to the text objects.
    2. Associate the unique identifiers to the data rows. This will be a tedious manual process for each diagram, unless we can discover or devise some algorithm to reliably make those associations. Failing that, it may be possible to at least semi-automate the process by some intermediate step(s). Failing that, it may be possible to at least facilitate the process by some visual interface means. (More information will be requried in order to do that.)
    Proceeding with step 1:
    Within that subset of As, the only presently-existing Illustrator attributes to "latch onto" is position (X, Y) and stacking order (Z). Of those, (unless we are extraordinary lucky in terms of the creation order of the text frames correlating to the order of the data rows), XY position is probably the only viable attribute with which to individually lable the textFrame objects.
    It would also be a fairly trivial scripting task to "label" each textFrame object with its XY position coordinates. That "label" could reside as the object's name (in the Layers palette), a Note (in the Attributes palette), or even as tiny additional text within the individual textFrame object itself.
    It would also be a farily trivial scripting task to similarly "label" each textFrame object with the row number (or other column value) of the data table. But again, the problem is which textFrame object needs to be associated with which data row. Unless you have some as-yet unrevealed correlation between the order of the data rows and the existing addressable attributes (XY position) of the text objects, that correlation will be a one-by-one manual task anyway, and that obviates the need for involving a script.
    Once the individual text objects are associated with the data rows, then, yes, a script can be written to automate the setting/changing of colors (or other attributes) according to changes in the data.
    Be advised: Unless you're doing something entirely new, there may be molecular modeling programs designed for this process. Have you looked into that at all?

  • How can I apply a current fill color to a stroke, then adjust that stroke color's build?

    Hi all, I'm trying to figure out a way to automate a simple, yet repetative process I do countless times a day. Ideally, I'd like to tie it to a keystroke to speed up my workflow.
    I work on line art and colorways for footwear, so the way I'm coloring these shapes and strokes helps to break apart the different materials and pieces of the shoe.
    While coloring line art, I work with Pantone spot colors as fills for closed path objects. I then have to manually apply that same color to the stroke, set the stroke to 0.5px weight, convert that spot stroke color to CMYK, and add 15% to the K value.
    I found some code in an older post for applying the actively selected object's fill color to the stroke, but I'm having but I'm having trouble with the next step of figuring out how to take that spot stroke color and convert it to a CMYK build that I can then add 15% black to. Is this something that's even possible? I've spent about an hour playing with the script and have only had luck matching the fill color or turning the stroke white. Thanks for the help!

    ok try this one, I added the spot color option
    // make stroke color same as fill color + 15% black increase
    if ( app.documents.length > 0 && app.activeDocument.pathItems.length > 0) {
        for (var a=0; a<app.selection.length; a++) {
            try {
                    var sel = app.selection[a];
                    var fillcolor = sel.fillColor;
                    if (fillcolor.typename == "CMYKColor")
                        var cmkycolor = fillcolor;
                    else if (fillcolor.typename == "SpotColor")
                        var cmkycolor = fillcolor.spot.color;
                    var col = new CMYKColor;
                    col.cyan = cmkycolor.cyan;
                    col.magenta = cmkycolor.magenta;
                    col.yellow = cmkycolor.yellow;
                    var black = cmkycolor.black + cmkycolor.black +15;
                    col.black = black>100 ? 100 : black;
                    sel.strokeColor = col;
                    sel.strokeWidth = 0.5;

  • Changing the Color of an Object in Elements 4.0

    Neither of the two methods documented in Elements 4.0 to change the color of an object seem to work on my object. It is a fleur-de-lis that I extracted from a PDF an artist made for me some time ago. It's now black and I want to make it gold. What am I doing wrong?

    Harold McDougal wrote:
    The first is to select Enhance, Adjust Color, Change Color, select the color to be changed with the eye dropper and the color to change to in the bottom window. Then select okay. Okay. In my case, nothing happens.
    The color replacement command doesn't work on pure black or white.
    If the design is black over white, try using a solid color fill and one of the lighten blend modes.
    How?
    Sample the gold color you want and have it as the foreground color chip.   Add a solid color adjustment layer over your  black and white design. The color should automatically be the foreground color in your tool box. Since should have changed this swatch to the desired shade of gold, it should be gold. Now, for the magic. If you change the blend mode of the solid color fill layer to "lighten", "screen", "linear dodge", or "lighter color", the black will be replaced by your gold.
    Note: I'm not sure which if any of the Elements versions includes the "lighter color" blend mode so if you can't find that one...don't panic.

  • How to use AppleScript to set "character fill color" in Pages 5.2?

    For Pages 5.2 on OSX 10.9.3, what is the correct applescript for changing the "character fill" of text in pages.
    If you highlight text, you do this via your mouse in the inspector by clicking "style," "advanced option (the gear wheel to the right of bold, italics, and underline), "character fill color (clicking on the multi-color circle, not the dropdown menu), and then choosing a color that comes up in the "colors" dialogue box.
    I've looked all over and cannot find how to use applescript to set the character fill color in pages.
    In some examples (not directly related) I see "character fill" used.
    In others, I see "colorfill."
    Basically, I want to use applescript, embedded in a keyboard maestro macro, to change the background color of the text (not the text color itself) to particular colors.
    Given the changes and updates to Pages this year, and to applescript, what's the easy way to do this?
    Thanks!
    Chuck

    Pages v5.2 still does not include selection-object, or character background color entries in its AppleScript dictionary, as does Pages ’09. Indirectly, using System Events, you can get the text selection in Pages v5.2, but then you can do nothing to change the selection. No assurances as to if or when Apple will mature the AppleScript dictionary support for Pages v5 series.

  • The ability to color code layers...

    Dear Apple,
    The ability to color code layers would be the biggest time-saving boost to my workflow that I can imagine.
    All layers look so much alike. Add constantly scrolling through dozens or hundreds of them, expanding and contracting often. Loosing ones bearings within the layers window is a given. It seems every few minutes, I have to stop and re-figure out where things are.
    If one could right-click to set a layer header one of eight or so colors (like in photoshop and just about every other program that uses layers) this would increase my productivity quite a bit.
    The rant ends. We now return you to your regularly scheduled forum.

    Granted, color-coding layers could be very helpful. That said, I find that group and layer labeling, and intuitive grouping and organization go a long way to keeping things straight.
    I don't think I've ever done a project with a hundred layers, but I've been as high as 40-50 before and never really had a hard time keeping track.
    Now, there is a shortcut that you might find useful. If you hit the X key on your keyboard, Motion will separate all the layers currently active in the canvas at the playhead's position ala Expose. This will allow you to select any layer easily. When you do so, the layer will become visible in the layers pane no matter how deep it's hidden.
    Finally, there is a feedback thread for product suggestions that is actually read by the Motion team, unlike this forum.

  • Dynamic changes to checkbox fill color

    I would like to know how to dynamically change the fill color of a checkbox.  When I use the following code, I change the color of the entire object (including the text).  I just want to change the color of the little box.

  • Graphic styles that use current fill color instead of stomping them?

    Sorry if this is a really stupid, newbie question; I am a stupid newbie.
    If I make a graphic style/appearance, it stores the colors of the fill and stroke and will then stamp that down on whatever else I apply it to (obviously). e.g. if I make a graphic style of a pale yellow fill and a bright orange dropshadow screen to make a glowing neon kind of look, and then drop that style onto a bright blue star, it will make the star pale yellow.
    Is there a way to do a graphic style that _modifies_ the existing appearance instead of stomping it - e.g. dropping that graphic style on my blue star would make a pale blue fill with a bright green dropshadow screen.
    e.g. A graphic style that said "make the new fill 110% value, 85% saturation, same hue as the existing fill color, add a 25 pt dropshadow that has the color of 90% value, 110% saturation, -3 hue of the existing fill color." And then that style dropped on a yellow star and a blue star would result in a glowing neon yellow star and a glowing neon blue star.
    The reason I ask: I have a bunch of geometric shapes of various shades of red, orange, yellow and brown, and would like to see what they would all look like with dropshadows of dark, very desaturated complementary colors (the orange shape gets a dark blue/gray dropshadow, the yellow shape gets a dark purple/gray dropshadow, etc.). Do I have to go in and modify each appearance by hand, or is there some way I can automate that?
    Thanks, and apologies if this is a really obvious question.
    Ken

    You won't get as much control as you describe (specific HSV values), but try putting a negative value in the Drop Shadow dialog's Darkness field.
    To create a Graphic Style that can apply an Effect without disturbing the existing fill/stroke of the object(s), first group the object(s), then apply the Effect (Drop Shadow, etc.) to the Group, and then drag the Group to the Graphic Styles palette.
