Filling in the Colors of an Illustration Efficiently

I have the following illustration:
What I need to do is fill in certain aspects of this illustration with different colors. For instance, I might need to change the color of the hair, or the shirt or the jacket. Currently the way I've been doing this is by using live paint. The only problem with this is that when using Live Paint, it nearly doubles the size of the file and also adds about twice the amount of paths. For what I'm trying to do, it's extremely important to me that I keep the file size and the amount of paths at a bare minimum. I've tried using paths -> simplify after using Live Paint, and the problem with this is it skews the illustration a little, and also puts some "holes" in it (ie the dead spaces I was referring to in my other thread).
Ultimately, what I'd like to be able to do is just select the path for a certain area of the drawing and fill it. However, there isn't always a neat path for the part of the drawing I want to fill. What I'm wondering is, what is the best way to go about separate the one ginormous path that engulfs much of the illustration into some other smaller paths that I can fill. Or in general, can anyone think of a better way to go about doing this so I get the most efficient illustration possible?
For your reference, here is the svg version of the file: https://sendnow.acrobat.com/?i=0HBJVDJKKp*sXdjhyzeV3A

However, there isn't always a neat path for the part of the drawing I want to fill.
Then you have to create one.
...what is the best way to go about separate the one ginormous path that engulfs much of the illustration into some other smaller paths that I can fill....
That's essentially what LivePaint does. It creates new paths in the shapes of areas that are merely visually enclosed by portions of existing paths. When it does this "flood fill" behaviour, it creates additional closed paths with fills.
If the area that you want to flood fill is too large, or has gaps that let the flood fill bleed out to areas you don't want it to, you can control that by drawing additional, temporary paths (for example, across the bottom) to "contain" or "limit" the areas of flood fill.
Or in general, can anyone think of a better way to go about doing this so I get the most efficient illustration possible?
Sure. Understand that you don't get something (elegant, efficient results) for nothing (sloppy drawing with over-automated instant-gratification features). Learn to draw with the Pen tool, placing and modifying anchor points deliberately; drawing optimal paths to begin with instead of drawing paths that merely look like they enclose the right areas  by dragging things like the Brush or Pencil tool.
...when I try to join the line to that anchor point, it's giving me the "to join, you must select two open..."
If you're using LivePaint, you don't have to join the paths to contain the flood fill if you're relying on LivePaint to automatically detect and trace around the new visually-enclosed areas.
When you do want to join paths (as when drawing/constructing paths deliberately), you don't have to select endpoints to join paths. You can just select the paths with the black pointer and invoke the Join command. The joins will occur at the nearest ends. You can do the same thing to close a single open path.
If the ends where you want the joins to occur are not the nearest ends, you can, again, draw a temporary path to cause the desired ends to be the nearest, and then delete/modify unwanted anchors/segments thereafter.
Your stated goal here is to get optimal paths. You just don't get that by using the loosey-goosey, artsy-tartsy "painterly" features (Pen, Pencil, LivePaint, autotracing, etc., etc.) You get it by learning how to draw Bezier paths deliberately and accurately.

  • Where is the color eyedropper in illustrator draw?

    Where is the color eyedropper in illustrator draw? This is a feature I desperately need.

    I find this a problem too! The color history is not nearly as convenient while working on a drawing and once you work on a few projects and then come back to an older drawing it is real guess work to match colors.

  • When I export as a tif file, the colors of my illustration become...freakish.  Is there a way to correct this?

    When it is in pdf, the colors look/print the way I want, but when it is in tif they change.  How do I fix this?

    You have not provided any proper technical details like what version of AI, what system, how you review your files, color management, export settings. Chances are you are trying to view CMYK files in an RGB viewer, but beyond that we can't really know anything...

  • After I chose a color with the eye dropper tool, the filler fills in a grayer version of the color, for some reason.

    I have CS3 and after I chose a color with the eye dropper tool, the filler fills in a grayer version of the color for some reason. Everything was fine till I accidentally picked the color sampler tool instead of the eye dropper tool. I undid that, but then after that everything with the regular eye dropper tool and the fill tool got messed up. How can I fix it?

    Sorry, I am new to the forum, and a novice with not much knowledge about computers. Sorry if some terms that I use here may not be entirely correct, as I am ignorant of terms of the trade. My Operating system is Mac 10.6.8. I am using Photoshop 10.0.1. I am doing a many layered color RGB setting artwork from scanned and photo images, 8 bits/channel. I have been working on this project for a month without any problems. I was using the eye dropper tool. I selected a color in my artwork and it showed up in the background color box, in the tools window, as a match from the sample that I had taken. Then I selected an area, with the lasso tool, and I accidentally picked the tool called "color sample tool", that puts a little target on the sample area and then a box pops up with numbers that move when the tool moves. That wasn't what I wanted, so I got out of there and chose the eye dropper, I selected the color, it looked good in the box in the tools window, but then when I went up to the fill command and chose fill ( which was set at 100%). I filled the selection, but it was not the color I chose that is in box, it was a grayed and lightened version of the one that I chose. I checked the layers setting and the opacity and fill were at 100%, as was the fill setting. I can't figure out what is making it not fill in the color that is chosen in the tools color window. Does anyone on this forum have an idea of what might be happening and how to fix it?

  • Color picker on Illustrator CC 2014 shows wrong values

    See the image above . The selected area filled color is e6e6e6 ( 230, 230, 230 ) but the color picker shows the wrong value 4d4d4d. Its happens only on Illustrator , What is this actually is there any problem with the color mode settings ? Please help me

    You misunderstand me, so don’t be too quick to judge.
    I said that the Color panel was more efficient than the Color Picker. It has sliders so that you can adjust colours precisely as you wish first time, rather than just groping somewhere on a big area of colour in the Picker and then having to make fine numerical adjustments afterwards (plus an OK when you’re done).
    The Color panel is particularly useful when you are working in CMYK because it ensures that you get clean mixtures when you want them (which the Picker does not, without fine tweaking afterwards).
    And if you want to get shades of the same colour, you simply hold down Shift as you drag one of the sliders.
    In conjunction with the Swatches panel, I would go for the Color panel any time, but if you prefer the Picker that’s quite all right by me.

  • How to get color group from illustrator into flash

    Hi,
    I have difficulties with the color management between Illustrator and Flash.
    I have the original vector files in Illustrator and would like to use the color groups, I have in Illustrator, also in Flash.
    One way doing it is using the Kuler.
    But I can not get the colors from Illustrator into Kuler.
    Can someone advice how to manage that process?
    Many thanks in advance!

    I'm fairly new to this having only recently started using these tools again after six years, but will try to help! Go to "Explore", find a theme you like and click the "Edit" selection when you mouse over it. From there you can edit it or save a copy of it as is as whatever name you wish. In Photoshop or Illustrator, they will now show up in Adobe Color Themes (Window > Extensions > Adobe Color Themes) under "All Themes" in the drop menu. In these apps (and others that are Adobe Color Theme aware), any themes that you favorite on the site will show up under "My Favorites".
    If you're using Fireworks, it's different as it still uses Kuler (Window > Extensions > Kuler).  Themes you save or favorite on the site don't automatically show up there, however you can search for themes by name, and if you select "Custom" from the theme group dropdown, you can enter up to four names that will show up in that dropdown menu and produce as many results as the window can hold for an individual term. For instance, I saved a theme as "Copy of Industrial Calm" which if I enter in the search box, the "group" is a group of one. However, if I just type "Industrial", the window fills with options, yet there are MANY more results on the Adobe Color site and you would have to be specific to get the right one in that window.
    Hope that helps.

  • How to import color palette into illustrator

    Since I am new to illustrator, I have a very simple question. I have a color palette from my company. This is the company colors. I would like to input these colors into the color palette of illustrator so I use those colors for our designs, etc. What is one way to do this?

    Might be better to open the JPEG in Photoshop and create swatches there. Then you can export those swatches as ASE which you can then load into Illustrator.
    In Illustrator you can include those swatches in a document profile. which you can then base your files upon.

    Try this. I didn't try to spend too much time straightening out wiring.
    I had to fix up a few things in it.  For instance, on mouse down, I did a move pen so that it wouldn't draw the first line from 0,0 or last end point all the time.  It only works as a free hand drawing.  It would be possible to do a point to point to point so that you could draw straight line objects (i.e. triangles, squares, etc.) , but you would have to come up with an alternate way to stop creating the array of points to be filled besides mouse up.  Perhaps another button such as draw.

  • Where can you type in the color hex number in illustrator or photoshop?

    There has been a number of occasions that I wanted to work with a particular color and had only the hex number.  I can not find how to enter or designate a color using the hex number in Illustrator or Photoshop.
    How do you do this?
    This should be a simple process I would think.  I have been been in number of situations were I could not copy the image, or email the image to myself, but one of the colors in the image was identified by the hex number.  So I recorded the number but could not use it because I can find how to gernerate a color by hex number in Illustrator or Photoshop.
    I did it by going to Kuler and entering the color and downloading the swatch...but...it cant be that hard can it.

    Jinpa Powa,
    In the Color palette, the hexadecimal colour values are hidden away in a window (you may use the flyout) with the (partially) misleading name Web Safe RGB.
    But you may also get to the option by DoubleClicking the Fill or Stroke box in the Toolbox or any Color Palette window.

  • How do you fill in one part of a picture with the color from another part in PS CS2?

    I'm making business cards from some of my artwork, and I've had to extend the width of the picture (extended canvas size on either side) to fit the size parameters. Here's the pic.  It's kind of hard to see the white extended edges on the side against this background, but they're there.
    I want to fill in the added canvas with the red background color of the original picture, so how do I do that in CS2?  I've gotten far enough to figure how to take samples of the background color with the sample tool, but I can't figure out how to deposite the color in those areas of added canvas on the sides. And please, I have very, very basic knowledge of this photoshop stuff, so I need instructions for dummies. I can paint anything with a brush, but this stuff is different!
    Thanks for any fyi.

    To get the red colour the Eyedropper tool would do, then fill the areas with the Paint Bucket,  but this would look obvious as the colour would be flat and untextured.
    Instead, use the Clone Stamp tool to pick up your texture and deposit it in the white areas.
    If you work on a new layer you can then blur with the Blur tool any resulting sharp border to the original and then flatten the final image.
    I can think of lots more ways but this is the simplest.
    If the terms in bold type are unfamiliar, look them up in Photoshop Help (Press F1).

  • LineChart and -fx-text-fill issue: how do I change the color of the labels

    Hello everyone,
    I'm currently facing an issue when I'm trying to style my LineChart with some CSS. Indeed I would like to change the color of the labels of my xAxis (CategoryAxis) and yAxis (NumberAxis) but it's not working.
    In my FXML file I tried to use the style attribute on my LineChart tag using: <LineChart style="-fx-text-fill: white"> with no result, the text remains black (even for the title of my chart). In order to know if the style attribute is well parsed I changed it to: style="-fx-background-color: red; -fx-text-fill: white;". The background is becoming red but the text still remains black.
    Finally I tried to define a stylesheet in my controller class with the same properties (red background and white text). My stylesheet is this one:
    .chart {
        -fx-text-fill: white;
        -fx-background-color: red;
    }In my controller I do the following line in order to load my CSS file:
    this.chart.getStylesheets().add(getClass().getResource("statistics-style.css").toExternalForm());Even with this option the text remains white, while the background becomes red.
    What I also tried is to put the -fx-text-file CSS property directly on my axises, but again it seems it is ignored.
    I followed the steps described in Figure 8-2 of this site: http://docs.oracle.com/javafx/2/charts/css-styles.htm
    Does anybody have an idea or encountered this issue?
    Thank you very much,
    Thierry.

    Hi,
    I figured a solution out to solve my problem. Currently in the documentation it is said to redefine the .chart CSS class in order to change the color of the title and labels text. But this is not working. Strangely the following code changes the font-size of both title and labels but ignores the -fx-text-fill property:
    .chart {
      -fx-font-size: 20pt;
      -fx-text-fill: white;
    }In order to change the color of the title I override the .chart-title CSS class:
    .chart-title {
      -fx-text-fill: white;
    }And for the labels:
    .axis-label {
      -fx-text-fill: white;
    }Well I don't know if there still is a bug on the .chart CSS class or maybe that behavior is expected.

  • I would like to change the colour of bars in a chart without losing the underlying default texture associated with my chosen theme. None of the 3D textured fills offered in "Chart Colors" match the textured fill of the theme. Any suggestions?

    I would like to change the colour of bars in a chart without losing the underlying default texture associated with my chosen theme. None of the 3D textured fills offered in "Chart Colors" match the textured fill of the theme. Any suggestions?

    Thanks Gary, but no, that does not work. First of all, I can't select each bar individually. When I click on one bar, all three bars are selected.
    When I use "inspector > graphic" I have 5 fill options: none, color, gradient, image, tinted image. The default selection for the theme I'm using is image. What I would like to use for my charts is the same image that this theme uses for table headers. It has the same texture as the chart, but a different colour. Using anything but image or tinted image removes the texture from the fill.
    I have found I can do one of two things. I can select tinted image from the fill selections in "inspector > graphic" or I can select 2D Image Fills from "inspector > chart > chart colors". The first choice does not allow me to match the table header colour because it only allows me to apply a tint to the existing colour and adjust its opacity. The existing colour has too much influence on the fill, so I can't find an RGB adjustment that will match the table header colour. The image selections from "inspector > chart > chart colors" do not quite match the colour or the texture. Again, I can try to tint the image, but I still can't get it to match and the texture is not the same anyway.
    The image I want to use obviously exists in the software as it is an attribute of the theme, but for some reason is inaccessible. The other angle I have tried is to edit the theme, but I can't figure out how to do that either.

    How to set transparency level of the color fill in Mapviewer integrated with OBIEE 11g?

    Hi,
    Go into the styling rules of your map in MapBuilder and change the render style to a darker color, so when it is rendered over the map in OBIEE it becomes opaque.
