Film conversion to DV tape

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to ask this question, but I'm planning to use FCE to do the editing.
I have several reels of 8mm and 16mm film that I want to convert to DV tape and I'm looking for a reputable company to do the conversion. Does anyone have suggestions?
Thanks,

Thanks for the suggestion. I knew there was a technical term for the conversion process and "telecine" is what I remember. Boston is about 2 hrs. away so that will be convenient.

  • 8mm film conversion

    Hello everyone!
I am wondering if anyone has done any conversion of 8mm over to digital. I appreciate your feedback!

There's the right way (sending it off to a telecine house) and then there's the home way: set up a projector with a variable speed motor, do NOT use a standard movie screen (they reflect light unevenly). Use a sheet of white poster board a few feet from the projector. Line up your camcorder on a tripod and connect the analog output to a TV monitor for viewing. While watching the TV monitor, run a reel of film through the projector to set your camera's shutter and the projector's motor speed to the right combination to eliminate flicker and adjust the iris to the optimum opening.
Connect the camcorder via Firewire to your Mac and use Capture Now, or record to DV tape in the camcorder for capturing and editing later.

  • Analog to Digital conversion of hi8 tapes

I have many hi8 video tapes that I have been trying to digitize so that I can import them into my imac. I have connected my analog hi8 camera to a Sony DSC-PC350 mini dv camcorder that has an analog to digital converter (pass through). In the VTR mode I can view my movies on the Sony camcorder. However, when I connect the Sony to the iMac with a firewire, I get a 'no tape' message on my iMovie screen. At the same time the video screen on the Sony camcorder goes blank. Can someone help me with this problem? Or is it possible that you cannot import a conversion on iMovie '09?

Hi again ftts (having a little trouble pronouncing that)
I went to the Sony web site and simply downloaded the operator's manual for that camcorder...
    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=DCRPC350
I also compared it to the manual of my TVR-330 which is a Digital8 camcorder and does have the pass through functionality. I did that to find the wording they use when talking about pass through (Sony never calls it "pass through"). All indications of the manual for your camcorder indicate you can input an analog signal and record it to digital tape. But nothing indicates you can use the camcorder as an A2D pass through device like you can with my Digital8 model.
So you will have to go through the two step process of first recording onto the MiniDV with tape. Then secondly importing it to the Mac. If you want to use that one.
    For the DCR-TRV22 ...
    http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=DCRTRV22
it looks like that one WILL do the pass through function (see page 173 of the manual). So if you want to skip the tape part then use the TRV22 camcorder instead.
    Cheers,

  • Old 8MM film conversion

This year I would like to convert all my old 8MM film to DVD format for importing to iMovie for editing.
Question: Can the Intel iMacs import from DVDs?
Can anyone provide me with instructions to import from DVDs?
I've tried importing a movie burned in iDVD back into iMovie, but it's just not obvious to me as to how to do it.
    Thanks

    Hi rjr535
You will have to convert the DVD's image and audio to MPEG-4 (mp4) befor you can import it to iMovie!
I use a DVD recorder to burn my old camcorder tapes to DVD's, then pop the DVD's in the iMac and use HandBrake to convert them to MPEG-4 befor importing to iMovie!

  • Video/film conversion freezing problem during play...

    hiya
i was wondering can anyone help me. i have been trying to transfer films to my n97mini using the ovi package. it seems to convert ok and transfer but when i try to play the films on my phone they all seem to freeze at the 25min to 27min mark during playback, but the sound keeps playing.
thanks in advance for any help.

Hi I have experienced the same video playback freezing problem. This occurred after installing the latest phone os upgrade (N97) . Before this I had no video freeze problems but many memory related issues. In my view what has happened is that memory that was prevoiusly allocatedto video support has been reassigned to address the  other memory related issues.. I have also tried to use the video conversion software contained within the PC Suite software and although the video gets converted and copied onto the phone successfully, the video does not work. I dont believe this is a codecs issue as this should be sorted out by the converter utility.. Can you please fix this as soon as possible and issue another os upgrade, preferably one that works on Windows Vista!

  • Boris continuum de-interlacer question dv 30fps to 24fps film conversion?

Just wondering what people think about converting NTSC interlaced dv video to film video at 24fps with a deinterlacer like the one that comes with boris continuum that does a simulation pulldown. Think I should just use a good deinterlacer or do you think I should convert my video to 24fps?
If everyone thinks I should do the pull down then I plan to use debug frameserver to encore and I will make a progressive dvd, does this sould like a good option.

And it will soon be getting even better… I am planning some updates for my dv2film functions: Better and faster deinterlacing, more accurate and faster motion compensation, multiprocessor optimization, so stay tuned!

  • Pitch adjustment for NTSC to PAL 4% speedup film conversions

Is there a setting I should be using that fixes the 4% speedup and which seems to annoy certain people who notice it?

    I know Marc,
but it still leaves my quesstions unanswered:
    You ask:
Is there a setting I should be using that fixes the 4% speedup
In order to answer that, we need to understand what you are doing with what footage and what will be your final delivery.
And you also did not tell us WHAT the annoyance of those group of people is that notice the 4% speedchange. Audio Pitch? less flicker? The fact that they new the films duration in America was 90 minutes and in Europe it is just 86 minutes and 24 seconds and they want their money back?
Is Cinema Tools maybe the right tool for you?

  • Importing digital copies of films into iMovie

I am using an external service to convert my old 8mm films to video. The transfer quality is superb but they are only set up for Windows. If they give me avi versions on dvd will they be only playable with Windows (or WMP for Mac?) or is there some way I can import them into iMovie for editing? Would an alternative route be to convert a standard dvd back into Quicktime and then import that into iMovie?

    Hi Peter,
.avi is just a container, not a video compressor... that service should tell you what compressor/codec they use...depening on that, a) iM could be able to import directly, b) QT pro is able to convert into dv, iM's native format c) you need Streamclip for converting mp1/2/4, divx, avi, vob...
for converting DVD conetnt, you need addtionally for 20$ Apple mpeg2 plugin
or you give these tools a try:
    * DVDxDV, it has a 30d trial period (testdrive sets a watermark)... and cost 25$
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6010.shtml
    http://danslagle.com/mac/iMovie/tips_tricks/6018.shtml
DVD is normally end-of-the-road, means, loss of pic quality after conversion back to dv... ask te service for conversion to miniDV tape, or storage as "dv" on a "PCformatted data dvd" (don't worry, your Mac is able to read that...), but that fits only 20min of video per disk...

  • Does normal DV mini tapes contain "Large" or "Full" dpi?

    Hi all,
I just had some old 8 mil film converted to DV tape for my Cannon MVX1i (about 6 years old now?)
Anyway, just wondering if this camera can even load "Full" files, and whether or not I should just copy them across from the DVD they gave me or the DV tape.
Also.... if I DID edit in "Full" mode to save all that ancient family movie data at high res, can I then burn a "normal" DVD and just reburn Blue Ray / HD whatever for my family later from the same project? (I hope this question is clear).

Have you loaded the DV tape into the camera? Many service bureau's do this -- just so you can use your camera to import into an editing program. So I would just try it. In the future, you might just want to give them a hard drive to put the files onto. Saves a step. I would try the miniDV tape first vs a workaround to get the DVD they gave you.
With respect to your comment--I did edit in full mode....is not correct. Full and Large in imovie only pertain to HD footage. If you mean you imported today's footage ie from a camera that is HD into imovie as Full to save for future bluray burning. Thats a great plan. However, if you are thinking you importing at Full from DV tapes, you are not! You can't add pixels that are not there. You can only take away.

  • Converting 8mm movie tapes to dvd

I would like to convert some old 8mm home movies to DVD but not sure what file format would work best with iMovie HD 6.I have a Pioneer DVD/VCr recorder and have tried importing one of these DVD's into iMovie but it doesn't seem to work,it looks like it imports but the resulting file cannot be opened.

Basicall, iMovie works with miniDV tapes rather than straight from DVD. What you will need to do is convert the 8mm films to mini DV tape format or have them put on a VCR tape from which you can use your VCR to pass through a miniDV camcorder into iMovie in the miniDV format. So the simple answer to your question is convert your films to the mini DV format. Not knowing what other equipment you have, it's hard to give specific recommendations, but here is what I did with some of my father's films from the 1940's:
*Sent the films to a commercial company to convert to mini DV tape format.\
*used my DV camcorder to import into iMovie and edited to my heart's content.
I also converted some old video tapes by using my camcorder as a pass through device (basicially played the tapes from my VCR to my camcorder so that it would convert to the miniDV format and deliver to my Mac.) Others have used devices made by Canopus to do the same thing.
Hope this gives you a start.

  • Importing from Hi8 tape on Digital 8 Camera

I'm running into problems importing a tape previously recorded on a Hi8 camera.
imovie establishes communication with the camera, attempts to import and stops after 2 seconds without capturing video.
My hunch is that the problem is due to the fact that the tape wasn't recorded on this camera.
Is their any way to get around this problem without locating the camera it was filmed on?
The tape plays on the Digital8 camera no problem, just won't import to imovie. Both old and new cameras were Sony

I had the same problem when I first started to import video that I taped on a non-digital 8 camera and then tried to transfer the video to iMovie using my Sony digital 8 camera and I found a solution that doesn't make sense but it worked for me.
I hooked up my VCR thru the A/V input on the camera and played the VCR and it transfered to iMovie without problem. I then stopped the VCR and hit play on the camera with the non-digital 8 tape and iMovie for some reason recognized the signal and I was able to capture the whole tape....the more that I did this process the easier it was for iMovie to recognize the signal to the point where I didn't have to run the VCR signal anymore to prime the capture process and now I just load in the non-digital 8 tape into my digital 8 camera and hit play and start capturing.
Make sure also to check that the A/V to DIGITAL OUT button is activated on the camrea too.
    good luck.

  • Output 23.98 to 29.97 tape with correct 3:2 pulldown

I need to output a film project to DVcam tape for an online session . I've been advised that FCP won't put a proper 2:3:2:3 pull-down on 24 f projects so I've used Cinema Tools to convert to 23.98.
However, even with verifying all of my settings, such as the pull-down, and "use playback settings" for edit to tape (or print to video) - and then testing every other imaginable way, the tapes always have "hold" or duplicate frames, instead of blended BC CD frames. So reversing actually creates blended frames.
Has anyone experienced this with the new software or hardware or OS? I've got to deliver a tape tomorrow and nothing is working. I've successfully done this in the past using FCP 5.0 from a native 23.98 project so I compared the tapes and this is definitely not using the 3:2 pull-down.
Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I don't suppose you have Shake? It'd be easy to insert a proper pulldown then and create a 29.97 sequence...
Another solution is Nattress standards converter... it will also insert a proper pulldown and it's only $99 bucks.
I mean FCP should work - and it has worked for me in the past...
The only other thing I can think of is to import your 23.98 quicktime into DVDSP, then burn a dvd and lay that off to tape. A DVD player will insert the pulldown on playback...

  • Hoe come all of a sudden fce isn't recognizing film breaks on capture?

I like my importing process to recognize film breaks on my tape. It makes managing the clips much easier. All of a sudden, it's capturing the whole tape as one clip. Whey did the first tape capture in individual clips?

everything looks in syn. I also trashed preferences. the only other thing I noticed is that the first tape was different brand from the next two tapes. i wonder if there could be a difference the way the tape records a film break...
No way could the tape be the cause of the alternate cpature.
FCE must be in a twist of some kind.

  • I am trying to find the tap size for the A1342 m4.3 Case Cover screws

I seem to be having a hard time finding out what the thread size is for the 922-9903 screws used in the A1342 Macbook. I know it list's them as 4.3mm but I would like a bottoming tap to chase the back threads. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks too all for your input. BP

Sounds as though you need to contact an actual service technician or other person with technical knowledge of the product; so maybe someone with that background may be able to get back to you on this...
Or you could try email or phone to a company that does that for a living to see how good their customer service and public relations are. Short of the call center at Apple Support, where you may get an answer, or not. http://www.apple.com/support/contact/
I'd check a smaller venue and ask if someone there can help.
From Alaska, I've called a few and emailed others on occasion.
A few are superior, some are good, a few never replied at all.
    {So you'd get an idea, where I'd consider doing business later.}
If no one replies here, instead you could try the above concept to see if a trades specialist at a business that does this for a living can give you an answer. Here's a place I've talked to http://wegenermedia.com/
There is this little place in South Carolina that does fix things, and may be looking into a processor overheat sensor issue in my early macbook 13" 1.83GHz coreduo, & also replace a switch or cable to a flickering backlit display. I figure the thermo-couple to heatsink needs a cleanup and arctic paste applied, while its there for the display issue.
Hopefully this helps, since these kind of questions seldom get a rise here.
A bit too technical, if you don't catch the right person who may be visiting.
And I've had to repair mechanical film cameras with tiny tap/die sets before.
But not in the 200+ Macs I've owned, repaired, upgraded, donated. Yet.
    Good luck & happy computing!
