Film Editors, help! FCE/HDV/FCP transfer issues.

I am using FCE 3.51. I want to edit HDV footage, digitized on a system with FCP 6.03. My computer plays the audio on the .mov files but I cannot view the video, there is no video. Can my FCE digitize HDV footage off a SONY HVR-7Z1U?
I hope I worded this correctly. If you have any ideas, I'd really appreciate it.
Thank you!

FCP captures HDV in the native codec rewrapped as QuickTime. That Apple HDV codec is not available in FCE. Express captures HDV by transcoding it to the Apple Intermediate Codec.

  • How to archive an edited film (in FCE) in FCP X

When I archive a film, edited in FCE, the first clip and sometimes also the second clip of the film is placed at the end! The other clips are corectly placed.
    How to change it?

the edited tape , with resolves, is split into clips!
That's what I was asking you. So it's not a single digitized file? This is problem with the tape recording or the playback. A continuous recording, such as printing to tape in FCE, should create a single digital video file when captured. The application is getting breaks in the playback which it's seeing as shot changes. There may in fact be a few frames missing at these points. I would suggest using a different application, maybe the QT player to capture the media.
(Not sure what resolves mean. Dissolves?)

  • Is FCE or FCP the one for me?

    Hi,
I'm new to the video editing world, and my main reason for getting into it at all is to prepare DVD demo reels of my film score work. All of my source material is QT movies.
I recently assembled just such a reel using iMovie. Got quite the education in basic techniques of assembling footage, adding titles, transitions, etc. But I also quickly realized that I'm going to need a more "pro" program to do this kind of work more quickly and efficiently (also, once in iMovie, the picture quality went into the toilet for some reason). So I'm considering some version or other of FC.
I'm a music composer first and foremost, and aside from the need to generate promotional materials like my demo reel, I can't make it my life's work to learn a whole new skill. But I do know I need a better tool to dot he job. So I'm looking for advice on what the best program would be for me: FCE or FCP.
I'm going to assume (hopefully correctly) that anything I can do in iMovie can be done in some version of FC. So here's a list of what I'd be looking to achieve from FC. Which is best for me, and, are these things possible?
    1. when clips are imported that the picture quality remains identical to the source
    2. ability to mix QT clips at different frame rates (24 fps and 29.97)
    3. have multiple tracks of video and audio
    4. ability to add video clips and lock them to the timeline so that their placement is more or less permanent (unless I decide later to "unlock" them) and, that their position won't be moved or "rippled" when I edit other clips
    5. ability to maintain permanent lock between video and audio extracted from the video file (iMovie isn't predictable in this aspect)
    6. ability to edit audio with a high degree of precision (see proper waveform displays, maybe even a tempo grid?)
Thanks to anyone who can share their thoughts.

    Hi Ian,
That link was very helpful. Just one more question... from my original post, "when clips are imported [into the program] that the picture quality remains identical to the source", what feature of FC would indicate that characteristic?
(To be more specific, all of my various footage is the output of various well-known animation houses, and is all top notch in appearance even in QT format. But when those QT's are imported into iMovie the appearance becomes grainy, backgrounds become splotchy and pixelated, and edges become aliased...)
    Cheers!

  • Upgrade FCE to FCP Apple Prores etc

    Hi,
I just purchased my first mac a few weeks ago. I was deciding between purchasing FCE and FCP, and ended up buying FCE. None of the specs I read mentioned the 1440x1080 resolution limit on importing AVCHD, nor did I read anywhere that the import codec was limited to a heavily compressed AIC codec rather than ProRes.
I've only had FCE since July 1. Now that I realize that issue, I want to upgrade to FCP, but called an apple store in the area and they said there is no upgrade path from FCE 4 to FC Studio. Is there any way I can do this? I really like the software, but these limitations were not mentioned. It said AVCHD support and when I read about that further, there was no mention of the bad compression and resolution limits. The footage looks about as good as 720x480 DV.
Is there any way that I could upgrade my FCE 4 to FC Studio and make use of the ProRes codec and I hope full 1920x1080 resolution?
    Thanks in advance!
    Adnan Hussain

    Adnan,
I am very interested in your post as a new user of FCE and a AVCHD camera user for awhile now. Can you tell us what your camera records in? Is is 1920 x 1080 i60, something else? Also what is the output you wish to use...SD DVD, Blu-ray DVD, Apple TV or internet.
My experience has been that with AVCHD, and most other formats I suspect, some loss of quality is to be expected during the editing process. Comparing clips from the camera to clips that have been imported to editing software and then exported to some other format is not an apple to apples comparison. ( no pun intended ). How the clips are imported and in particular how they are exported have a huge impact on the final result. The Pro res codec in FCP may offer some higher quality output, but at a much higher price and depending on what you want to view this on......it may not matter. So bottom line, as Ian has responded, in your case switching to FCP may not help.
One final question is how have you tried to export the movie, what was the work flow you used? There might be some settings that you can change to get closer to the results you desire.

  • Iweb - a film editor's NIGHTMARE - need thumbnails on one page...!

I'm a film editor and I have put my portfolio / my reel online in the past year using iweb and my site is separated into four pages and with mpeg4 movies on each page as thumbnails that the viewer can click on to watch one at a time. The spots are roughly :30 to :60 secs long. When it worked... I had six small movies with an average size of 5mgs each and they only play one at a time.
I had to re-layout my site in iweb in February and ever since republishing it again many times; I have had intermittent drop out on every page. For example; the little video camera icon which makes the thumbnail active is not there after publishing and the movies do not show up in the slideshow - only black holes show up so I cannot play them.... I went into my idisk and trashed all the media and reloaded it so there was no confusion on where the idisk needed to find each media file. I have republished it many times and created several different files exported from fcp through compressor and made mpeg4, mov 800 streaming, move 300 streaming, H264 and a regular qt export from fcp - nothing is working... yikes!
Should I forego using iweb or am I putting my media files in the wrong place and in the wrong format? Must I create links to my media files and only have one movie on each page. I have noticed that most professional editing websites like have many thumbnails on a page - how'd they do that?
Check out this site - this is what I would like to do..... I also know how to use Flash CS3 but do not know how to publish a site online - if I can do anything in Flash I would be happy to...!

Welcome to the discussions. An alternative to thumbnails is to use a "player" with coverflow to select the videos from. I haven't used this Embedr player, so I don't know if it will simply work in iWeb's HTML Snippet Window...

  • HELP! New Mac Pro Issues...

Ok, so the Mac Pro I speak of is not "brand new" but it is new to me. My friend graciously handed it over to me for some work I did for him. He is a film editor and he gave me a Dual Quad Core 3.2Ghz Mac Pro. He previously had a 320gig drive in bay one, a 500gig in bay two, and a 1tb in bay 3. I believe he also had a Radeon HD graphics card and a SATA drive expansion. When he handed it over, he took out the 320gb HD which had the original OS X on it, as well as the Radeon and the SATA expansion. From that point, I had moved the 500gb HD to bay one and the 1tb to bay two. Now, with my Leopard Install disc in the optical drive, I try booting from the install disc. When doing so, I get the grey kernal error screen asking me to "Restart by holding down the power button..." I hooked up my macbook pro through FW800 and tried installing OS X onto the Mac Pros 500gb HD. It still will not load even when selecting the startup disc during the "option" keystroke. What can I do. I just got the original 320gb drive back from him and was able to start up but still can't boot from the install disc to install on other drive. Please help.

Upgrade, you already own a Mac w/Leopard. BTW, I have the same machine and have 16TB of hard disk space - 8TB on the internal drives (2TBs each) and a 8TB/4Slot Drobo external enclosure (and I can add a second Drobo enclosure for a full 24TB if need be.
You will love your machine. Totally amazing. I have two 30" Apple Cinema displays and they act as one 5foot display. Blew my mind when I plugged them in because I figured they would work as individual screens yet the system sees it as one huge screen.
Beef up that RAM to 16GB if you can. Woosh!

  • FCE or FCP?

    Hello all,
I'm a complete newbie when it comes to video editing so I wonder why I went and purchased a Canon HV-20 (it's still in the box in case I need/want to return it! LOL)... and an associate at Best Buy told me all I'd need is iMovie HD.
However, there's a class available at a local community college that teaches Final Cut Pro and how to use a camera, etc.
So, I'm thinking about taking the class, but afraid I may be over my head...
I've heard that FCE is very much like FCP so I'm wondering that if I take the class, will I be able to come back on here and use FCE?
Also, it seems an advantage of FCP over FCE is that FCP works with "native" HD while FCE works with AIC (whatever that is!) LOL I read in another forum that native HD will be edited faster than something with AIC? Or is there another advantage of working with native HD over AIC?
Any tips on whether or not I should attempt FCE or FCP or just stick with iMovie HD..would be greatly appreciated.
As I said, I'm quite a newbie and I don't mind reading a manual... I just don't want to get lost within Chapter 1!
    Thanks for any help/advice!

Far be it from me to disagree with my fellow Brit Ian, (Eh up, si thi...) I believe you have 2 options.
    1) Learn iMovie on your own - As Ian says it's free and an excellent program for one who's new to video editing with a learning curve that's not as steep as FCP/FCE. You could then move up later.
The problem with that is that a complete newbie, you have to learn this on your own (unless you are also privy to iMovie classes) and I believe that it's easier to
    2) learn the whole camera/FCP with tuition, than option 1.
My judgement is coloured by the fact that this is how I learned FCP, albeit on a full-time college degree course and I found it the best way but, of course, it's horses for courses. (Incidentally, I also learned iMovie concurrently, but soon decided to focus more on FCP.)
Your decision will be shaped by your requirements - How serious do you anticipate your interest being?
Do you prefer and find it more suitable for you to learn on your own or do you prefer the first hand help of tuition?
Are you prepared to make the additional investment to step up to FCE.
My advice - take the course - get FCE - then upgrade to FCP if and when necessary.

  • Log & Transfer issues with Canon HF200

I'm trying to import about 150 short videos from my canon HF200 camera. Although it doesn't have a firewire connection (it's through USB), it does record AVCHD. When I plug the camera in to my computer, it is recognized in the finder window. However, no options show up to allow me to import from the camera. And, when I open FCE, the camera is not registering in the FCE Log and Transfer window. The clips aren't even there. I have been reading forums all night and I'm at my wit's end.
I'm using Snow Leopard, FCE 4.0.1, and everything seems adequately updated. Please help me figure out what I'm going wrong!

    Hi -
    1) Are you confident that your footage on your camera is in the HD format? Log and Transfer does not work with footage that is shot as Standard Definition.
    2) Have you tried to navigate to the camera manually using the Add Volume Button on the upper right?
    3) Have you tried removing the memory card and attempting to access it through a memory card reader?
    Thanks
    MtD

  • More SMB Slow transfer issues 2012 R2

    Hello All,
I have read the multiple threads about 2012 Rs and SMB file transfer issues, and I have tried everything I have found on TechBet with no luck.  I have disabled RSS and all the checksum offload options, and I have changed the GPOs
for digital signing...no luck.  Any advice would be great...

    Hi,
Above all please make sure it is caused by SMB. Sometimes network issue could also be caused by hardware configuration or limitation.
Incase is related to SMB version please test to disable SMB2 to see if SMB1 works fine or not.
Also here is a forum FAQ article which could help troubleshoot general SMB related issue. Please see the troubleshooting process:

  • FCE to FCP

I currently have a mac pro with final cut studio. I recently bought a macbook pro and i was wondering about somethings. 1) i dont really want to spend the money on fcs3, and was wondering if i bought final cut express would i be able to work on a project and then be able to transfer it to final cut pro on my mac pro to finalize the project. Im starting to travel a lot and would like to get a head start editing if i can on the road. 2) does final cut express let me handle any 24p footage? Thanks ahead for the help.

FCE would not let you use things like the ProRes codec (and several others), nor will it let you edit on a 24p timeline.
According to the license for Final Cut Studio, you are permitted to run a copy on a desktop Mac and a copy on a laptop Mac under a single license; you just can't run them both at the same time. Same is true for FCExpress.

  • PLEZ HELP! Zen touch transfer iss

Hi, im havin some issues with my zen touch. It connects fine to mediasource (meanin im able to see zen touch under sources and see the music stored on my touch etc) and i can sometimes transfer music to it from my comouter via usb. However sumtimes it doesnt work, i.e i'l be able to send anywhere between -20 songs to it and then the next song i try to transfer an error message is displayed on media source "player is either busy or not connected, please try again later" then i'l have to leave it for at least half an hour and repeat the process until the problem arises again. U can understand how annoying this is for me especially since im trying to put such a large music collection onto my player. Can any help. i will be grateful 4 any possible solutions..

AliClifton: Connection and transfer issues are always tricky to troubleshoot because it can be many things.
The first thing to try is a disk cleanup, which is very simple to do. To access the Rescue Mode hold down the play button and KEEP it held down, press the tiny reset switch once, and KEEP the play button held down until the player boots into the Rescue Mode. Choose Disk Cleanup from the menu. Note: Disk cleanup should not remove your tracks. It searches through the disk for files and rebuilds the index, and can be useful for correcting any strange behaviour.
Secondly, make sure you have the latest drivers, software and firmware from Nomadworld.com downloads.
Thirdly, check whether the player has the same problem on a friend's PC.

Hoping for some help with a very frustrating issue!
I have been syncing calendar and contacts on my iPhone 5 and Outlook 2007 using iCloud  2.1.3 (my PC is running Vista). All was well until the events I entered on the phone were showing up in Outlook, but not the other way around. I’ve tried the usual recommended steps: deselecting calendar and contacts in the iCloud control panel and then re-selecting, signing out of the panel and back in, and repairing the Outlook installation in control panel.  I even uninstalled iCloud on the PC and downloaded it again (same version).
The furthest I’ve gotten is step 2 (and once, step 3) of 7 while performing “Outlook Setup For iCloud.” At that point I get, “Your setup couldn’t be started because of an unexpected error.”  After the first attempt at all this, all my calendar events disappeared from Outlook, although they are still in iCloud calendar and on my phone.
Sound familiar?  Any ideas on how to solve this iCloud/Outlook issue?  Thanks much in advance!

  • List of missing features in CC 2014 for film editors

    hello everyone,
I was thinking about some features I miss in CC 2014 (and I really was hoping they will be there, because the most of them are just basics...) and made a list which I want to send (again...) to Adobe as feature request. Premiere improved a lot in last years, but there are still some basic functions which you absolutely need as a professional editor, which still aren`t implemented. What do you think about the list? or maybe did I overlook some of the new features in CC 2014? Just so you know, I`m using Premiere mostly for editing movies (shorts, but will edit my first feature film this year), also promotional films, but much more less. So my biggest concern right now is if Premiere is the right choice for editing a feature, which of course means a lot of material, probably Red Raw.
so here`s what I totally miss in Premiere:
    1. auto sync/auto merge: synching by timecode or waveform all of the video and audio clips in the bin/in the timeline at once and not one after another. and merging them all at once, not one after another. it works of course, but it takes ages!
    2. merged clips should be more flexible,
    - it should be possible to use the option "interpret footage" on merged clips, sometimes you have to modify them after they were merged and you`re already editing for a long time.
    - replacing raw footage should also replace the footage in the (already merged and edited in a timeline) merged clips
    3. the aaf export is much too simple, there are a lot of options I miss there. it is great solve in Avid and in automatic duck in Final Cut, something like that would be great
    4. the possibility to change color space in the project and play out. yes, this option is available in After Effects, but you can`t always use it, because there is some footage you can`t import in AE (like titles!)
    5. .. which leads me to the last point: it should be possible to export the titles from Premiere with an alpha channel (I`m using the titles as the subtitles)
bugs that need to be fix:
    - audio dropouts!
Are there any feature films editors here? what is your experience with working on big projects on premiere?

Since I don't know how to edit my own posts . . .
Another missing feature, automatically filling in formulas when a new row is created. For instance, say you have 3 columns, 1 + 2 = 3. In Office 2004, when I add a new row, that formula is automatically inserted. It's just one of those nice little time saving features that would be nice.

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
