Film manual focus lens use on DSLR

I have a few Canon manual focus lenses for FTb film cameras. Has anyone had any luck adapting these to Canon DSLR?
Thanks.

In a quick word:  No.
There *are* adapters that will allow certain FD-type lenses to fit onto pre-EOS camera bodies - no features of the lenses or camera bodies function together - but all require an optical element in the design (the light path to the sensor) and that should just about "seal the deal" as to why you should simply move on with EOS-EF / EF-S lenses with your dSLRs - because even the "best" of these FD-to-EOS versions simply degrade the image to unacceptable levels.
I share your pain ... because some of the older FD / FD-SSC "film" lenses rivaled anything on the market!!!  I still have a 35mm f/2.0 FD-SSC that "got into a brawl" with a Zeiss T* on a friend's Contax RTS ... and in our unofficial basement tests, simply blew it away!  Resolution - at any aperture - contrast, distortion - it was simply no contest in lop-sided favour of the Canon.  Never got a chance to compare it with an R-series from the Leica SLRs of the day ... but several of my Kodachrome 25 / 64 slides at a former camera club were blue-ribbon winners.
Same spectacular lens on one of these FD adapters?  About 1/4 the quality.  Image looked as if it had been shot with grease smeared on the front element ...
So, again:  No.

  • Canon 6D Question about focus confirmation for manual focus lenses

I am very interested in the 6D. I own the 5D2 and concerning IQ there won't be much difference. But the loud and shaky shutter of the 5D2, the silent mode of the 6D respectively, lower weight, better ISO and smaller size would make the 6D a better camera. If I could have wished I wanted an even more purist and smaller 6D, no video, wifi and gps, however.
But I have a QUESTION: Will there be a focus confirmation on the focus points like the red confirmation flash there is with the 5D2? I like to shoot eg. with my small 40mm Voigtlander Ultron manual focus lens (just an excellent lens btw) and therefore highly appreciate this focus confirmation feature. If somebody already knows the answer, this would be very nice, thanks!
I got the impression Canon disadvantages manual focus lenses on their bodies, especially with the 5D3's new autofocus system (which is superb for autofocus lenses). Therefore I wish Canon would offer a reduced to the max fullframe body for manual focus shooters (what is a real passion for a growing number of photographers). Manual focus shooters need interchangeable focusing screens, focus confirmation on the focus point and live view. I guess Canon could be successfull with such a camera: the Canon IQ, especially the colors are excellent, the handling of a Canon is better than other brands, the overall package one gets with Canon is very good. There are so many outstandig MF lenses from Zeiss over Voigtlander to vintage lenses with adapters that are seeking the best FF body. And DSLR's are better than mirrorless cams but need to become smaller to make the size advantage of mirrorless cams irrelevant.
    Thanks for reading, Dave.

The Canon 6D arrived today in Switzerland. The focus confirmation shows on the focus point and works well with Zeiss glass. We get the same focus finetuning like we had in the 5D2, what is important to align our Zeiss lenses.  Besides, this is a nicely thought out camera. Smaller than one would expect from the factsheet numbers. The silent shutter mode is great. And there was a Hasselblad / Canon 6D comparison (beautyshooting), where I could not see a difference between the two on one of these big EIZO screens. The 6D is a reasonable camera, no show off factor. Better consider the 6D instead of the 5D3 if you are not a pro.

  • Lens Profiles not showing up (manual focus lenses)

I am trying to create profiles for a few manual focus lenses. The profiling process seems to go as it should and I create and save a profile. When I go to Photoshop > Lens Correction, however, the profiles I just created don't appear.
Clearly there is no EXIF data and I don't know if Lens Correction requires that in order to find appropriate profiles. The profiles I've created do appear in the proper folder.
Any ideas? What am I doing wrong?

    Hey,
not sure if you resolved your Problem by now, but I just post this cause I did have a similar Problem that the profiles created didn't show up in CameraRaw.
I solved the Problem by altering the following line inside the profile:
    <stCamera:CameraRawProfile>False</stCamera:CameraRawProfile>
Just replaced False by True et voila:
    <stCamera:CameraRawProfile>True</stCamera:CameraRawProfile>
    Problem solved for me
    Hope this will help someone

  • Canon 18-135mm IS Lens....Jumps during manual focus

    Hi,
I recently noticed that my Canon 18-135mm IS lens has a minor issue that I'm not sure if it's a fault or not......
When the manual focus ring is turned, at a certain point it kind of clicks/jumps momentarily.  I noticed this when the lens was at approximately half of the zoom range but I'm not sure if it happens at all zoom ranges.
As far as I can tell, things are still in focus so don't know if it's a problem or not, I'm just wondering whether something could be out of alignment and potentially do more damage ?
    Thanks for any insight

No offence taken....people do stupid things (including me).  But yes, I switched to manual focus first, although I have occasionally forgotten to do so and moved the focus ring a minor amount before realising.
Having looked at it again, the amount of movement is quite small.....I have come to the conclusion from reading other posts online that it's mostly just the movement/play of the zoom lens within the barrel, which sounds quite common on this lens.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • Canon 200 f/2 manual focus

    Hi all,
This question is related to the Canon 200mm f/2.0 lens.
Does focusing work by moving the black rubber focusing ring
if the lens is in manual focus mode AND IF there is no
canon body attached to the end of the lens (i.e. it is not
    under current/power)?
Say I want to project a source in an optical lab with this lens onto a detector,
and want to use it in fully manual focus mode.
This did not work with the Canon 200 f/1.8 AF lenses.
    Regards,
    Bogar

    Hello ebiggs,
    Thanks for your response.
You say "on external focusing Canon lens" the focus works when set to MF.
The Canon 200 f/2 counts as an "external focusing lens"?
I am asking this, because the manual focusing definitely does not work
on the older Canon 200 f/1.8L USM lens, even when turned to MF mode, but
without a Canon camera attached. So I guess with your definition the 200/1.8 is
not an external focusing lens. When a Canon body is attached to the 200/1.8,
then the MF works fine, but one needs to power up the lens and its CPU so that
it converts the motion of the rubber ring into electronics, and ultimately motion
    of internal lens elements.
I understand that this is not a standard use of the lens, so hoping that
Canon afficionados will know this. Clearly, the lens does not change
its outer dimensions while focusing. But one can see the focus changes
when projecting e.g. a landscape on a piece of white paper.
    Best regards,
    Bogar

  • Nikon D300 auto / manual focus metadata

    Hello,
When viewing photos in my D300 (i.e. using the D300 to view photos I have just taken), I can see displayed whether the photo was taken using auto or manual focus. I have been unable to see this information after importing the photos from the camera into LR2. I shoot RAW and convert to DNG upon import. Is this information located somewhere within LR2? If it's not, is it an oversight that this information is not included in the export?
    Thanks,

    LRK,
Hello to you also. How is the wedding photography going? Good, I hope. Nice to hear from you and thank you.
    Lawrence,
I am comparing to My D70. I don't have enough knowledge as to other brands to make a judgment. One report (who can believe reports?) says that it compares favorably with the Fuji. In some circles the Fuji is considered the best digital for weddings because it has a fairly wide dynamic range, again for digital.
When I shoot I rely on the "high-lights" flashing in the monitor. I then check the levels, if I need to. This is just faster for me in the heat of battle. I did a snapshot of my neighbor yesterday. On the monitor it indicated that the part of his home (light tan) in the sunlight was in the white range. I opened the photo in Photoshop and it was clearly tan, with reasonable detail. Not as good as film but very good. A great improvement I think.
    Nick,
Thank you so much. Yes going from D70 is an improvement. At the same time, I have to say that I really appreciate that the D70 came out when it did. It made my switching from film affordable. In my opinion, if you were able to get a good price for your D200 it possibly would make sense to get the D300. But I sure would not make the change if it meant a big financial loss. Some things aren't practical no matter how much we want the latest and greatest. I'm sure I'm not telling you something you don't know.
    Ramona Dear,
Here I'm all happy about my new D300 and you come in here and say you want a D3 as a BACKUP! I hate you Not really, just kidding. I do have to ask what it would be a backup to? Again, just kidding about the "hate you" comment.

  • I have a T3i (600d) and a L series 100-400 F4.5 , will a 1.4 extender be manual focus only

I have a 600D that I use a f4.5 L series 100-400 on.  If I buy a extender 1.4x ii,  can I assume manual focus only?  I had read that a firmware update may change that.....
    Thanks

It will be MF & don't expect a firmware upgrade that changes that.

  • Will the XA-20 remember the Manual Focus Setting?

My question is "Will the XA-20 keep the Manual Focus setting if you turn the camera off and then back on?" This is the first time I will be using my new XA-20 to capture a Performing Arts Show. I will set the focus before the curtains are closed with someone standing in the middle of the stage. My previous Sony DV would remember its focus if turned off, I don't have enough experience with maunal focus on the XA-20 to know how it acts. I've done a little experimenting and gotten mixed results. To be safe, I'm going to keep the camera in standby and not off before the show and during intermission but I'd like to know how it is supposed to act.
    mark

    Hello pt92mach,
The operation of manual focus will be retained on the XA20 when the camcorder is powered off.  I believe you may be referring to a focus preset, where a certain location is preset and returned to quickly, in which case the preset is not retained upon shutting the camcorder down.

  • L920 Pro Cam Manual Focus to Infinity problem

I am loving the Pro Cam, but I recently found a problem with the manual focus...when I use manual and set it all the way up to infinity distance, really far away objects are actually out of focus.  The shot actually seems to focus on subjects ~10 feet in front, and happens with both image and video capture.  Is this intentional, or actually a glitch?
In the image samples, the first one is a snapshot of a video taken with manual focus at infinity.  Notice it seems to be focused on the crowd's heads two or three rows in front instead of the whales.  The second is a picture taken with auto focus.

  • Manual focus while recording movies with sony HX100V?

does anybody know whether one can manually focus while recording movies (also in 60p) with the hx100V?
wondering - that would really make a difference.
    thank you very much!
    dom

     Hi domi,
After doing a bit of research on this it does seem to be possible to use the manual focus feature of this camera while shooting video. When you turn the mode dial to Video the camera defaults to Intelligent Auto mode, which will not allow you to manually focus your videos. While the camera is set to shoot videos you need to go into your menu settings and change the camera's mode from Intelligent Auto to Scene mode.
    I hope this helps!

  • Manual focus support throughout the video

Can Nokia add manual focus support throughout the video..? One of the app can do the same, so I think it will be easy to them to add this feature in Nokia Camera. Drawback of that tool is, it can't able to record stereo audio, and Nokia camera now can record 5.1 surround sound in few Lumia. So just curious about it.

Thanks for this feedback, @onkar20. The Nokia Camera app is mainly for capturing still photos with high resolution, though it's can also be used for taking videos. I suggest sending your suggestions to improve the Nokia Camera app to windowsphone.uservoice.com. You can also send it by going to Nokia Camera > More (...) > Feedback.

  • Is there any possible of manual focus or apps for ...

Reason I need this is because the autofocus doesn't deilver the best focus setting I really need to get, the correct focus in time or will have some problem focusing something that is tinny. I have to try very hard to touch on tinny object in the screen to focus(very annoying). Im not like the profressional photographer to have all the time to waste to take a good photo. My best suggestion is to give us manual focus.
I really hope there is a manual focus function in the next firmware update. and also the volume buttons + and -  is the manual focus that will be alot better. Is there alternative like apps that have this functions? Looks like almost all the available paid apps I had tired won't have this functions. Alot of paid apps is so disappointment.

  • Is it possible to sort the Aperture Library by Lens used

Is it possible to sort the Aperture Library by Lens used? And get statistics on the different Lenses used?
    I'm using latest Aperture.

I would just add that your Preferences settings have to be set to show the columns you need. Go to Aperture -> Preferences, and select the Metadata tab. in the "List View Columns" field, for whichever set you have chosen with the radio button, choose the set of data from the pulldown list that shows the fields you want. For example, I have the lens model field set in EXIF-Expanded set. I choose that set and those fields will show in the columns in List View.
    Great tips, thanks!

I understand that the add row button is currently doing a submit.
To not submit the page you need a dynamic action on the page.
Does the javascript function addRow do what you want?
Otherwise have a look at the following two threads Add row in manual tabular form using dynamic action and Accessing Tabular Form & Add Elements to Collection without Page Submit.
You're process could be something like:
Add the new values to the collection using the idea's in the second thread and at the same time add the new row.
And as second action refresh your tabular form.
If you get stuck set up what you have done on apex.oracle.com using the tables from the demo application.

I think I have found a way of doing what I want...
Creat a Smart Album with Any Text contains (Name of lens), this seems to work, but would be nicer to select from list as I have many lenses!
