Film Roll Questions

Hi - I have a few questions regarding film rolls.
(1) Is there any way to have film rolls appear in the source pane, or is the only way to get a list of rolls by selecting View > Film Rolls?
(2) How can I rename a film roll after import?
(3) How can I re-date a film roll after import?
Thanks in advance,
Tim

Timu:
1 - the only place to view by film rolls is the main library as you've identified.
2 & 3 - Yes. Click on the file roll's icon and then go to the Info window at the bottom of the Source pane. You'll be able to edit the title field of the roll and the first date field. The other date fields represent the range of modified dates I believe and cannot be edited.

  • Viewing By Film Roll Question

    Hello,
Just a quick question regarding viewing a library by film roll:
I have read many of the discussions regarding the file structure in iPhoto 6 and finally getting my photos in the form I want them and where I want them!
Is it correct that you can only view your entire library in film roll order?
If I highlight 'Library' in the source list then I get all the individual rolls llisted. If I highlight an individual year in the source list then the 'view by film roll' option is greyed out.
It would be nice to have each roll in each year available to view - is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Chris

Rather than clicking on a particular year in the Source list, can you perhaps view the entire Library in film roll order and just deselect / un-tick the year(s) you do not wish to include?

  • Dumb film roll question, I'm sure

There has to be an obvious answer right in front of me, but I can't see it.
HOW do I find and select (therefore rename, work with, etc.) previous film rolls? One post seemed to say that the film roll title is in the INFO pane, but I only find the photo title.
I was using iPhoto 5, recently switched to 6. There should be two film rolls imported since, and several years' worth before that.
This must be so obvious that I've been avoiding asking the question...:-b
    Thanks!

Go to the "View" menu and select "Film Rolls", then click on the "i" button on the bottom left of the iPhoto window. You then select the Roll you would like to rename. On the left side below the Album names (where the photo title was) you will see the Roll title. Click on the name and type in the new Roll name.

  • IPhoto5 to iPhoto 6 upgrade: All Film Rolls in 1 Roll Now

    Hi,
I have an external Firewire HD with my entire iPhoto library on it (over 13,000 photos/11 GB). I have back-up DVDs of each year (1999-2005) that I burned through iPhoto. Prior to upgrading to iPhoto 6 on the FW HD, I placed each folder from off the burned DVDs from IP5 (1999-2005) in the iPhoto library and then when I launched IP6 it asked me if I wanted to make a new library before importing the photos, and I agreed, yes. All the photos were imported, but they are all in one film roll. When I check an individual photo, it appears to still have all the meta-data (including the actual day it was shot). How do I fix this ? I am semi-savvy on OS X, but it appears the semi is the operative word here. I have "View as Rolls" selected under View. After doing a search here and reviewing Lori Diloreto's website (excellent resource-thanks Lori !), I just can't get my head around what I am doing wrong. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks and regards, Chris

Do you have a backup copy of your V5 library as before you added the other folders and updated? If so move it into your Pictures folder, moving the other one to the desktop and identify as questionable. Now launch iPhoto and it will tell you it needs to update that library. Your should retain your rolls, keywords, etc. for those photos in the library at that time. Once you have the new V6 library up and running, mount a DVD disk and copy the folders of pictures to the desktop. Now import each folder into iPhoto from there. You should get a new roll for each folder imported. Do that for each disk.
If those DVD disks are titled iPhoto Library then they are in the iPhoto format and will be imported differently. The will have files in the library folder similar to those in your V5 library folder, thumbail files, data files, etc.
Again, starting from your old V5 library update just it to V6. Then put one of the DVDs in the drive and it will appear in iPhoto's Source pane directly underneath the Library icon - like this. You can drag that disc icon onto the Library icon to import all of the photos on that DVD disc and you'll keep keywords, comments, rolls, etc. intact. Do that for each disk.

  • Moving Photos Between Existing Film Rolls

Can I move photos from one existing film roll to another existing fill roll, without creating a new film roll? And if so, how? I think this is a pretty basic question, but if I need to clarify anything please let me know. Any input is greatly appreciated, since I'm trying to organize my iPhoto Library and it's been pretty daunting. Thanks!

Oh man, I should have figured that out myself. I was dragging them just near the other photos, not into the Roll Name. Thanks for the help!

  • Film rolls are missing

One of my iPhoto libraries has film rolls missing and rebuilding thumbs and database did not help. I can see the original photos in the iPhoto library on the hard drive though, so I would not want to reimport. Is there a way to show the film rolls again without re-importing?
    Thanks,

Since the original photos are still in the iPhoto
library, (even if I drag the folder to the desktop),
how do I avoid having a second set of the same photos
when I re-import them into that iPhoto library? Can I
select Preferences-Advanced and tick NOT import
photos into iPhoto library? In this way, it will give
me an alias pointing back to the existing library,
give me my film rolls back, but no dupes?
After dragging to the desktop it is necessary to go in iPhoto and delete the remains from there. I was going on the assumption (correct me if I am wrong) that the photos from the missing rolls have either thumbnails or empty boxes in the iPhoto window. Delete them in iPhoto, then empty iPhoto trash before you reimport. Otherwise, iPhoto won't recreate their thumbnails and the reimport will not work.
I don't believe that creating an alias will help, because it won't fix the link that has been broken. Plus, it will add more confusion to your library.
Thank you all for your help. Thing is that I
understand that they will have to be re-imported if
the rolls are missing, but WHY are the rolls missing?
I don't know. It usually results from user activity in the iPhoto library folder from within Finder. The simple act of renaming a roll's folder in Finder will cause iPhoto to be unable to access all of the files stores inside that roll. If you haven't done that, then it's a mystery. [I had gremlins that rearranged my files during my upgrade from iPhoto 5 to iPhoto 6. Modified files traded places with Originals, some files were missing from Originals but present in Modified-it was weird. I used this method to sort everything out and haven't had a problem since the upgrade.]
I use iPhoto Buddy to select my iPhoto libraries (I
have about 10 libraries) and one of those libraries
was corrupted (due to overloaded photobook I think),
but the iPhoto library in question, that I was not
using, has film rolls missing when I opened the
library. (I'm afraid this is going to get contagious
and affect my other iphoto libraries too!)
I haven't seen other reports of iPhoto Buddy breaking connections like this, but I don't use it so I can't really speculate. I would expect to see lots of complaints if this happened very frequently at all.
For the future, keep a current backup of the Library6.iPhoto file for each of your libraries. It is located inside the iPhoto library folder; Duplicate it in Finder and move the copy. This is the database file which contains the metadata about albums, rolls, keywords, etc. If your database fails in the future you can simply replace this file with the backup to restore your library. I take this advice from Old Toad and backup the file every time I close iPhoto.

  • Add photo to existing film roll

    Hi all,
My question relates to adding photos into an existing film roll. I have some motion jpeg movies taken with my still camera that were not imported to iPhoto when the original folder was imported. Don't remember why unless older versions of iphoto did not import .mov files. Anyhow since these movies relate to the other stills in the roll I would like to add them to the existing roll. Forum search and iphoto help didn't turn up any answer. I suppose I could delete the roll and reimport the entire folder, but was hoping for a simpler solution. Thanks for any help.

    Hi Jim,
    After the movies are imported:
Command click on each movie and roll you want combined to one roll
    Go to File>create film roll
    From the iPhoto Help menu:
    Creating a customized film roll
    To create a film roll:
Click Library in the Source list.
Select the photos you want in your new film roll. Command-click to select non-adjacent photos.
Choose File > Create Film Roll.
Your selected photos will be removed from their current film rolls and moved to the new film roll you create.
After you've created a new film roll, you can name it and change its date. Customizing film rolls is one way to better organize your photo library.

  • "View Film Rolls" is not Highlighted.... how can I get to it? (iPhoto 6)

"View Film Rolls" is not Highlighted.... how can I get to it? (iPhoto 6)

Since you're using the term Rolls you must be running iPhoto 6 or earlier. For future problems be sure you post in the iPhoto 6 or forum.
For this problem the View File rolls will only Be sure you're clicked on the Library. That menu item is not available in an album or other item. If you have clicked the library icon first and it's still grayed out close iPhoto, delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder and then try again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Will Not Display by Film Roll

I can't figure this out: When I am on the "library" selection, I used
to see a display of all the film rolls, listed separately. Now all I get is a scroll of photos with no indication of what film roll they are on.
How do I set the view so I can view the photos grouped by film rolls?

    Hi Bill,
Actually the same thing happened to me under different circumstances.
I was dragging a group of five images to a keyword in the keyword panel.
I dropped them on the keyword and in front of my eyes the library images were shifting. (I have my view set to rolls). When I was done being shocked I discovered all my images were in one roll. This was not acceptable to me as I really like my dated roll organization.
I had recently done a backup so I dragged out the messed up library and dragged my backup into the Pictures folder.
I no longer use that keyword panel for keywords. I use the "get info" pop over window to keyword my images.
I really don't know what your iPhoto Library looks like in the Finder. If you can navigate there and tell me if your images are still in their dated folders, I can tell you what to do from there.
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
If your images are still in their dated rolls in the Finder, then you can get those rolls back, but will lose Albums, keywords, slideshow...basically everything , but you will get your roll organization back.
You would follow the instructions on Page 2 for the "add to the library" method.

  • Create Film Roll - greyed out

I wish to create some Film Rolls, to better organize my photos....
As the title indicates the option under File 'Create Film Roll' is greyed out.
    As extra info:
I have checked that all ticks are set under Library, no entry in the search box bottom right, and no filter bottom left.
I have recently imported the files, when I first swapped from WindowsXP, and they weren't put into film rolls which I would like to do now!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
To create a film roll you must be in the Full library
    and
Have at least one pic selected.
Every pic in your Library is in a Roll, they have to be. Rolls in the iPhoto Window (View -> Film Rolls) correspond exactly with the Roll Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library Folder.

  • How can I change the order of photos in a film roll?

I've scanned in images and then imported them to i-photo and they are not in order on the film roll in i-photo. Does anyone know how I can re-order them within the roll?
    Thanks
    Ruth

There's only two way to arrange photos in the roll itself while having the rolls visible in the organize window. They are last file created first or last file created last.
You can create an album of that roll and then arrange them manually, by date, by file name. If by date or file name and you want them sorted alphanumerically or chronologically you'll have to make sure the check box, "Place most recent photos at the top" is unchecked in the iPhoto Preferences/Appearances pane.

  • Sort by film roll in iPhoto 8

    Come across an interesting problem.
A friend has a digital camera that resets the time and date every time the battery is charged, and not surprisingly after a while no longer bothers to re-enter the details, hence the date is always sometime in year 2000.
This has never been a problem as iPhoto sorted the pictures by film roll, so there was always a semblance of order. I must add that the original titles of the image number have been changed to descriptive picture titles.
I have just helped them to import their picture library onto the shiny new MBP, 10.5.5, iPhoto 8 (having told them how fantastic events is) and it has turned into a can of worms. All the images are now sorted by date order which means they are all over the place, and arrange by filmroll is no longer one of the options.
Anyone any ideas? Is there any way to get import pictures from iphoto 6 without it reformatting for events, or can i get iPhoto 8 to sort by iPhoto 6 filmrolls?
    Thanks

Yeah the iPhoto 6 library is still on their old laptop, so that could work.
Do you know whether importing into iPhoto 8 would then keep that same film roll order, with over 6,000 pictures they are quite keen to keep a semblance of continuity.
You do NOT import the library
You must use iPhoto 6 on the laptop and rename any rolls - any roll that uses the default name of rollxxx will come across as an unnamed roll and it gets very confusing in iphoto '08 - once you have an iPhoto 6 library with no default named rolls in it quit iPhoto on both systems and drag the iPhoto library on the new computer to the trash and then drag the iPhoto 6 library from the laptop to the pictures folder on the new computer and launch iPhoto there - this will convert the library and keep the iPhoto 6 roll structure
The event order may be an issue since it is time based - there is a command under the photos menu to batch change date and time so you can use iPhoto '08 to restore the desired date structure

  • 'Film Rolls' View loses sort order when finding photos via Keywords or text

I have my iPhoto Library sorted by Film Roll so when I select 'Library' in the source list I see my rolls listed in date order in the viewing area.
If I try and find photos using the keywords pane or the search field the rolls which match are displayed in the viewing area but the order they are listed is no longer according to their date but some (seemingly) random order.
Does anyone else have this problem?

I find that if I have my rolls sorted by Film roll and Ascending (by roll date) the keyword search results will have the rolls in the correct chronological order.
However if I change the sort order to Descending , the search order remains as Ascending by roll date.
If you create a Smart album for a keyword search then you can sort the photos by any criteria you'd like: Date, Keyword (redundant), Rating or Title and Ascending or Descending.

  • IPhoto 6: Film rolls disappeared

is was busy renaming film rolls in the library when for some unexplained reason, the film rolls disappeared & only one enlarged picture is in view for each film roll. I cannot see the thumbnail pics in each film roll. How do i restore how the library shows film rolls? i tried going to View/sortby/film rolls. Nothing changes. Please help

Thanks TD for your reply. I did drag the slider on lower right corner to the left & yes all my pics are in view & I CAN SCROLL TO SEE ALL BUT...... the PIC ICONS ARE NOT yet listed in individual film rolls with the film roll name. I DID GO TO VIEW/SORT BY FILM ROLL (WHICH WAS ALREADY CHECKED) & STILL NO CHANGE. ANY OTHER IDEAS?

  • Film rolls and photo dates out of whack

I opened my iPhoto ver. 5.04 the other day and noticed that thousands of pictures were absent. After doing a search here I tried rebuilding the library (using the option+command buttons at startup). While the rebuild returned the photos into iPhoto, they were all lumped into a single enormous film roll and most of the dates are reporting incorrectly in the iPhoto info window. The photos are still organized in the iPhoto library folders, but the application is not organizing nor recocnizing them correctly. What can I do?

    doug:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Not a lot. Evidently the library database got damaged and the rebuild date is probably the latest modified date for many of the files. Once you get to that point there's essentially nothing one can do.
A possible tip for future use is to put our new photos to be imported into a folder on the desktop first, date and name the folder and then import that folder into iPhoto, like this. The resulting roll will have the same title as the folder and the date will help with future organization.
