Film sound sync

Hey all,
I'm doing my first film and sound sync. I wanted to make sure I was doing things the right way, as I am handing off the project to another post facility once the sync is done. We are both using FCP, aand I've got a call into the editor to make sure I'm getting to him what he needs. However, I wanted to run it by the experts (and elitists ;.) here to make sure I was doing it correctly.
The film has been transfered to digibeta, and I have wav files with embedded timecode for audio. I'm assuming the embedded timecode, is location generated timecode in the portable dat or flash recorder that was used on-set. So the timecode doesn't match the timecode on the digi-beta. I will just use slate timecode to match to the timecode in audio file.
So, what I planned on doing was just digitizing the digi-beta, logging it by scene. Then importing in the wav files. Then I'll watch for the slates in the footage and sync them in the sequence with the audio. Simple as that.
Is there another way that I should be doing this? Is there a way to export the clips, so that I get a combined audio and video clip, that retains the timecode information of the digital beta?
Thanks for any insight.
Chris

well, we usually sync in telecine for expediency in order to get sync rushes (dailes) to set but in addition we always load the location audio into the system (usually as BWAV files) and sync ourselves. that way we keep control of all the audio media through the post process i.e. we copy the audio media onto a drive for the sound dept and when the time comes we give them reference OMFs and they can reconnect to the master audio tracks.
this is mainly due to the way we work with PAL in the UK (we telecine fast at 25fps) and also the fact that we usually telecine to Beta SP rather than Digibeta for offline purposes.
mind you the current film i'm working on here is NTSC (it began life in Canada) and we have all the original audio in the system.

  • Loss Of Sound Sync - FC7

    Hi Gang
Working with FC7 in Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and an older Mac Pro.
Exported a 70 minute clip and noticed loss of Sound Sync, (about mid way thru in a QT File). The clip is a mixture of assorted clips.
Divided the 70 minute clip into 3 separate exported clips which produced proper 'Synced Sound' in each clip.
This problem used to occasionally happen in FC6  - Does anyone know a fix or work-around?
    Thank You

If i shync my music will my apps and films be synced as well ? and what do i do if it says my ipod can not be synced (error 13019) ???

If you tell iTunes to sync them (there are separate tabs) then iTunes will sync them.

  • Sound Syncing Strangely

    Hello friends.
I am currently making a film using Flash 8 Pro. In one of my
scenes, I placed and synced the sound exactly as I did in all the
others. I set the sound to Event, because I'm using a Virtual
Camera. When I exported the video, the sound was not properly
synced (all sounds happened much sooner than they were supposed
to). I tried moving the sound's keyframes so they could occur later
(I thought that this problem was a result of visual lag), but the
sound occurred at the exact same time it did before I moved it. I
tried restarting Flash, saving and re-exporting, deleting the sound
files and re-importing them, moving them to a different layer, and
copying everything to a brand new file, but nothing has worked.
This problem is only occurring in one scene file, very
    strange.
    Thanks.
    - Wright

Make sure your default easy setup frame rate matches your camera material.  That can supposedly cause this problem.  Open one of the audio files in fcp and check the frame rate and see if it matches the video.

  • Sound Sync Problems

Ok, I'm editing a project at the moment.
I was using two different cameras to film it, and a mini disc player to record the sound. It was a music concert and I had a direct input from the microphone into the mini disc player.
Now that I am editing it, I've put the sound from the mini disc over the video. It starts off fine and in sync, but by the end of the first act, about 25 mins on, the sound is out of sync by about 2 seconds. I can only assume this is because either the camera or the mini disc was recording faster or slower than the other one.
Does anyone know how I can correct this?
    Thanks
    Chris C

Another possibility is to measure the length of the video clip (right click the video clip in the timeline and read its Duration value in the contextual menu itself) and then open the Speed dialog for the audio clip (select the audio clip and Modify/Speed) and apply the new length to its Duration field; the audio clip length will fit the new duration. Obviously: 1. you can do the reverse (read the audio duration and apply it to the video portion), 2. for this procedure to work the video and audio clips must be unlinked (but probably they already are since they are coming from different sources).

  • IdeaTab A2107 Movie sound sync problems

Hi Guys, I have just bought the Ideatab 2107a, and first impressions its a well built device. However I have downloaded 2 differen tmovies from google play to see how the run as I will want to watch them on a forthcoming flight, but when I tried it the sound is about 15 -20 seconds out of sync making film unwatchable. Any suggestions welcomed.
I am using the standard google Play Movies v 2.4.14. I have downloaded same films on to my 10" Motorola Xoom and there are no problems..........Help !.......and thanks in advance

    Hi Terry,
I contacted Lenovo and agree they are as much use as a chocolate teapot (  I doubt they would even understand that!)
I have now installed MX Player 1.7.17 and found that this works well with streamed video.
I have other 10" devices for business use, and this 2107 was just going to be used as a convenient device for watching movies on flights and quick check of emails etc, and to be honest the build quality size and price ticked the boxes especially with 3G
I Find it really sad however that the complete lack of customer care and support from an IBM company.
I also have totally redundant icons for Lenovo APP shop which cannot be installed....future support ?......not likely !!

  • IPod Classic 160GB film library sync problem -  trying to sync films that have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store - all other libraries sync perfect - why?

Hello Apple and the iTunes Windows PC users community.
I am trying to sync films that I have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store. The mp4s all appear and play successfully in my iTunes application but will not sync across to the iPod film library folder.
For your information: I am using iTunes 11.1.3.8 on a Windows 7 64bit machine with 500GB hard disk and 8GB of Ram in the UK.
I have restored the iPod classic 160GB three times now to see if it was a hardware problem with no joy. Each time all the music restores properly as do the podcasts and all the items in TV programmes all appear to sync and work fine.
I have also tried to copy films into the TV Programmes to get around it with no joy. They always go to the films section to start with. It is just the Films library that does not sync - all others work perfectly. As a last resort I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes with no joy either.
I am technically savvy and have gone through the itunes and ipod settings but nothing appears to make a difference - This is the first time I have had to post here as I can usually solve the majority of the ipod anomilies but this one has me flummoxed.
Has the film encoding type changed in the newest itunes update? - Has this happened to anybody else and is it a hardware, software, or operating system problem.

Having uninstalled the current version 11.1.3.8 and loaded and older version of iTunes 10.7.0.21 I can now categorically confirm that the newest update seems to be causing the problem as the films and TV Programmes are syncing perfectly on this older version.
If you are going to do this please dont forget to remove the  ' iTunes Library.itl' file as this stops the older versions from running as I've just found out

  • Problems with image/sound sync

I have been using my facetime camera to record sound/image and automatically import it into iMovie11. I have a fully up to date iMove 11, and am using a brand new MacBookPro Retina13. The sound is badly out of sync in the project, and even when I detach the audio and move it to sync, it remains out of sync later in the piece. Help!

    Hi Jungleboy6 and tje1976:
Somehow the default Picture Import folder path has been corrupted in your registry.  We’re trying to get to the bottom of this problem.  If you could give us a little more info, it would be very helpful.
Here are the steps to follow to fix this issue:
    - Start->run, type ‘regedit’, enter
    - Navigate the tree to this location:  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Research In Motion\BlackBerry Media Sync\Settings
    - You should see a setting on the right called “PictureImportPath”
Before you do anything, can you take note of what the current value in the ‘Data’ column is?
To fix the problem, double click ‘PictureImportPath’ and change the value data to a valid folder path on your computer.  Ie C:\MediaSyncImportPath
Hit Ok.  Close Regedit.  Restart the application.
Let me know if this works.  And if you could let me know the value it was set to and also your Operating System, it would help us track down the underlying problem.
    Thanks.

  • HDMI Sound Sync Problem

I've rented 5 movies and watched a couple of podcasts via Apple TV. In 5 of the 7 screenings, we've experienced problems with the sound failing to sync to the video. It's particularly bad with the Apple Keynotes. I have Apple TV connected via an HDMI cable to a Sony 1010 HD receiver, which is linked via HDMI to a Bravia 52" TV. I've tried direct hookup to the HDMI port on the TV and wound up with the same syncing problems. The receiver has a sync adjustment that I can use to get it close to sync but it's a pain and you have to stop watching the movie to **** around with it. Any suggestions?

I had an audio sync issue over HDMI when I had Settings / Audio & Video / Dolby Digital Out set to 'On' (which I had to do to get my receiver to detect the Dolby Digital Optical signal). Turning this setting to 'Auto' or off fixed my sync issues when using the HDMI audio stream.

  • FCP Sound Syncing Question

    Hey Everyone,
I have an audio syncing question for you. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I am cutting in FCP. I logged and captured my footage and with timecode breaks, etc. the tape was cut up, and I was left with eight files, let's call them Footage1-Footage8. I have completed my cut of the piece using the in-camera audio that was linked to the video on the DV tape that I imported. Our sound guy in the field used a DAT recorder to record the production audio and apparently captured the timecode to the audio files, so that it matches the video (i.e. the DAT recorder and our cameras - DVX-100s had synced timecode during the shoot). The DVD he gave me has 20 audio files as .wav, let's call them Audio1-Audio20. My question is, now that I have finished my cut, I would like to replace the current audio tracks with the production audio. How can I sync the audio with the video and replace it in what I've cut. Or perhaps I can't, in which case - how can I sync them up and THEN cut, but I'd really rather have to not do that, lol!
    Thanks for your advice!

Sorry about the long winded post, though.
I guess my real question, summarized is - is there a way to sync separately recorded production audio (that has timecode) with the footage that I shot (that has the same timecode as the audio, but also has in camera audio that accompanies the video track - I would imagine I can just "cut" the extra audio tracks, however).
I'm at my bay trying to figure this out, and I've got nothing, and the people I work for don't want to spring for that bwf2xml program you were talking about What's the emote for pulling one's hair out?

  • Some of my films wont sync with my ipad anymore. Any ideas?

Some of my films, all purchased through itunes, wont sync with my ipad anymore. Can someone help?

I get songs once in a while that are saved in a weird format of mp3 and won't convert properly to apple audio format. I turn those files into aifs first and then convert to apple audio. I don't know why but this seems to eliminate this problem for me when it pops up.

  • Imovie 9.0.2 sound sync - is it to do with the export route

Like scores of others in these forums I've been grappling with the (appalling) failure of iMovie 9 to synchronise sound and vision. The 9.0.2 update did not solve anything for me.
I have founds one solution, though not sure how good a one. Instead of using "export using Quicktime" - which produces an out-of-sync mov file - I find that "export movie" gives me an m4v file that does appear to be in sync.
I've no idea what light this might throw on the whole sorry saga. 2 questions for me at this stage:
1 - am I losing quality or creating other problems by saving as an m4v?
2 - how do I go about compressing my m4v (it's 30 times the size of the equivalent mov file)?

    DV
4 minute and 34 minute projects - length seems to make no difference. Also they are out of sync from the outset - not just by the end as some users have found.

  • Strange sound/sync problem after encoding in CS4

Hi guys and gals, wonder if anyone can help me out on this one?
I'm running PPro CS4 on a purpose-built matrox rtx2 system, working mostly from DVCAM.
I've done a complete edit, cutting various interview soundbites over  music to make a testimonial montage. After doing the complete audio mix,  everything sounds fine and dandy when I preview it after rendering. The  problem occurs when I output the film using AME to a variety of  different formats. Where previously I had precise edits on the timeline,  the audio cuts sound to be a couple of frames out. For example, one cut  occurs just after the line 'ideal product for our needs' and sounds  exactly as it should on the timeline, but on the outputted file it  sounds like he says 'ideal product for our nee...'
Same thing occasionally happens on music mixes, when I cut to the beat  to use different sections of the backing track and crossfade through, it  sounds fine on the timeline but then after I output the file then cuts  the sound off the beat and the music sounds like it goes slightly out of  time on the transition.
I've even tried rendering it out as a wav file, but that doesn't work either.
Is it something I'm doing wrong? I've checked and it's all 48k sound  (and if it was a sample rate issue I assume it would appear on the  timeline as well). Or is it another to add to the long list of problems  we've had with the matrox setup?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Cheers,
    Kev

    Kev,
Could it be that the preview of the timeline is inaccurate as opposed to the outputted file?
Let's check this out. First, is there a red line above your Clips in the Timeline, just below the Timeline Ruler? If so, hit Enter to Render those Clips for smoothest playback. Note: Audio can need Rendering too. Does this help?
If not, set the WAB (Work Area Bar) over a small section of the Timeline, though one that exhibits the OOS issue. Export to your desired format/CODEC and test. Do you get OOS in the Export?
For a bit more on Rendering, see this ARTICLE.
For a look at the WAB, see below:
    Good luck, and please report,

  • IOS 6 notification and sound sync

I am having an issue where the banner notification and sound are not in sync. So the banner will flash on the top of the screen and then I will hear the notification tone. This can be very annoying when the phone is in my pocket - I will look t it when I hear the notification tone but will have missed the banner notification so often times don't know what the notification was for. I've had exactly the same problem! Also the silent button on the side isnt working either. Calls seem to be ok, but emails sms facebook, none of those sounds work. Have you found a solution?
No I haven't. The difference is that my silent button is working and even sound when receving and email or an sms's. My issue is the sound of the notification of the applications. For example facebook, F1Live24 ..
