How do I add an Airport Extreme with Time Capsule to an existing non-Apple network?
How do I add an Airport Extreme with Time Capsule to an existing non-Apple network? I have an ISP provided wireless Router that has to remain as the base station. I am able to join my 1/2TB Airport Extreme and Airport Express to the network, but I can't access/use Time Machine.
One option would be to connect the Time Capsule (TC) to the ISP-provided wireless router by Ethernet. You can then configure the for a roaming network. Then, depending on what your goal is for the AirPort Express, you can either: 1) Add it to roaming network, 2) Configure the TC & the Express for an "extended" network, or 3) Configure the Express to "join" the roaming network for AirPlay.

Hallo,
Air Port Time Capsule, Sonos Play 1, iTunes, Apple TV
Hi,
I'm looking at purchasing an Air Port Time Capsule 2TB and a Sonos Play 1. I'd like to run all my iTunes from the APTC to the Sonos Play 1 and the films onto my Apple TV. I'd like to do this without having to turn on my macbook pro.
My macbook pro only has a 500gb harddrive and is maxed out for space. Being able to do this would save having to turn on my laptop just to listen to music or watch a film.
Will this be possible or does anybody else have any ideas?
Help would be appreciated
CarlSonos may be able to play the music but you cannot stream the movie without itunes running. The TC is NOT a media player.. it is a dumb store for files.
With iTunes you have no choice but to run a computer.. but the iTunes can be stored on the TC if you must..
A large USB drive plugged into your laptop is faster, more reliable and can be backed up by Time Machine.. A TC cannot be backed up by Time Machine, it is slow and will have issues with the library and running iTunes.
It can be pressed into duty.. but will never shine. -
Hello,
I have a DSL modem that is also a WIFI router as my main WIFI network from room A. In room B, I have a TC wirelessly joining the existing WIFI network (not creating a new one). That works fine, I have one SSID, and I can wirelessly access the TC disks and backup my Mac on my TC.
Now, I would like to connect a wired device (with on WIFI) to the ethernet port of my TC. Unfortunately, the ethernet ports of the TC don't seem to be "activated" as they do not have internet on them.
More precisely, I'd like to connect a GE Cordless Skype Phone Model# 31591 (http://www.gephones.com/products/skype/dect-6-0-expandable-digital-cordless-phon e-with-skypetm.html) that connects to a router via Ethernet. I'm aware that I could simply connect it to the DLS router, but that's not what I want... Is there any way to activate the ethernet ports of the TC while in "join" mode ? Or do I really have to buy a Airport Express to create my main network and then extend it ?!?Thanks, the reason why I asked again, is because you told me to start another thread with the specifics of the device I want to connect, so I did
Not a big deal, and it is easy to become confused.....but to be clear about this
Your question.....
is there a way I can connect my Bluray player to the TC ?
My Answer.....
Please start a new post for that. Tell us the make and model number of the player and whether you plan to connect using wireless or Ethernet.
so I tried to creat the main WIFI network with a first-generation Airport Express M9470LL/A (802.11b/g, no "draft N" or "n" support) and the TC wouldn't extend it either, is it too old/not supported
Unfortunately, the "extend" setup will only work with "n" devices. The older Express does not have a setting to "Allow this network to be extended", so the Time Capsule cannot pick up the signal.
I'm not sure what else to suggest other than what I already have. I'm assuming that you do not want to buy another new Airport Express. -
I have an Apple TV (3rd Gen) and Apple Time Capsule (4th Gen). How can I access Movies and Music stored in the Time Capsule from Apple TV. This is very n't give frustrating that Apple doesn't give their customers with an straight forward access to their customers in between their own products. Iam repenting that buying these products is completely waste of bucks. Appreciate your help...
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The Time Capsule is clearly announced as a router with a hard drive to make backups, not to store anything and share it with your Apple TV.
To access to movies and music from the Time Capsule, note that the Apple TV can only access to them if they are stored in your iTunes library, so you will have to put your movies and music into iTunes to access to them, and then, put your iTunes library on the Time Capsule in order to access to your data from there -
I have an older Time capsule that I would like to give my sister in order to extend her CenturyLink wifi. I can connect via ethernet but she would like to play music thru an Airport Express at the stereo system.
My question is: would it be better to extend the existing wi-fi network (to the upstairs part of the house) OR set up a new Apple network with the Time Capsule linked to the Airport Express. This is the way I currently have my own network....in a smaller house.I have an older Time capsule that I would like to give my sister in order to extend her CenturyLink wifi
The Time Capsule is not compatible with a CenturyLink device if you plan to "extend" using wireless only.
You will need to connect the Time Capsule to the CenturyLink modem/router using an Ethernet cable. Then, configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network".
The AirPort Express could then be used for AirTunes by receiving the signal from the Time Capsule.
If the AIrPort Express is a newer 802.11n version, then it could also be configured to "extend" the wireless signal of the Time Capsule to provide more wireless coverage, in addition to use for AirTunes.
If you plan to keep the wireless on for the CenturyLink gateway, make sure that the Time Capsule is separated by at least 6-7 feet to help minimize the chances of wireless interference between two routers. -
Using a Time Capsule to Extend a Non Apple Network
I have a home network that i use to connect to through wifi, i tried to extend it through my Time Capsule and it said "This network cannot be extended".
Whats the deal?
Message was edited by: Robert BoinskiIf you've managed to set the Time Capsule up to "extend a wireless network" from the Belkin router, you are the first person to report success with this type of configuration.
Would you mind posting the details of your configuration so that others might benefit from your success?
You can perform a quick check on your configuration by locating your Mac near the Time Capsule and holding down the option key on the keyboard while you click on the fan shaped AirPort icon at the top of the screen.
The BSSID you see will be the AirPort ID of the Time Capsule. If you perform the same check near the Belkin router, you should see a different ID, that of the Belkin. Is this the case? -
Can't set up my time capsule on Airport Extreme (updated). Apple instructions are to use manual set up. Click on Advanced tab. Click on Mobileme and enter Mobileme ID and password. I did this. But Time Machine window is blank. Tryed to click on update window after entering Mobileme ID but Airport does not respond (turn of then on)

I have been experiencing some networking problems
Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I have the latest Time Capsule ("TC"), an old Airport Extreme Base Station ("AEBS") bought in 2007 and 2 Airport Expresses, one bought in 3 months ago ("AE-Alpha") and the other bought back in 2007 ("AE-Beta"). All of them have been updated with the latest firmware.
Based on those dates, the AirPort Extreme is probably flat (as opposed to dome-shaped), making it 802.11n-capable. The Newer AirPort Express is probably an 802.11n-capable model A1264, while the older one is probably a model A1084 or A1088.
I use {the TC's} DHCP function ... to avoid unauthorized use.
This a discussion for another thread, but that's not what DHCP is for.
The wireless setting for it is to participate as WDS Main, but after reading various posts, it seems WDS is a bad idea
With that older AirPort Express you're stuck with WDS unless you decide to replace it with a newer model.
The AEBS is currently setup as being a WDS Relay at the moment
Why a relay? That's only needed if there's another base station "beyond" it that is configured to depend on it.
Since the AEBS is connected to the TC via Ethernet, you should probably configure it as a "roaming network":
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2273124
{The AE-Alpha} connects fine as WDS remote at the moment
I don't have any experience with mixed WDS and non-WDS networks, but since it's 802.11n-capable, you may be able to configure it to "extend" the network of the TC rather than as WDS. Look for a setting on the TC to "Allow this network to be extended".
Physical location:
AEBS in one end, TC and AE-Alpha in the middle while AE-Beta on the other end.
A device such as "AE-Beta" that's supposed to extend a network shouldn't be "at the end" but should be half way between the central base station and the clients that need an extended network. -
Can not get the MacBook Pro to back up to Time Capsule. Can any one help me with the following Error Please?
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/XXXXXXXXXX MacBook Pro.sparsebundle” is already in use.We don't see that error much but it is about the easiest to fix.
Pull the power on the TC.. count to 10. Plug the power back into the TC.
Viola.. working TC again. -
Why has my time capsule stopped working ,now that apple have upgraded me to yosemite
I Had time machine capsule working good then i tunes upgraded me to mavericks then the time machine has never worked since, its now been upgraded to yosemite and its the same ,it backs up all the time, but when i go to enter it, all i get is a blank shreen, i have spent thousands with apple products, but this is a verry big customer let down .i have 2 imacs 2 time capsules and 3 airport extreams
can anybody help *****.*************@********.com
<Edited by Host>You cannot post emails in the text.. you can have it open in your profile.
Ring Apple if you have loads of stuff and have current apple care and they will try and sort you.
Yes.. big changes were made at Mavericks.
You need to factory reset the TC and start again.. Perhaps even wipe it and start over.
I recommend all very short names.. do not follow the apple recommended names in the wizard.
Use 2-20 characters, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. Passwords the same but 8-20 characters. mixed case and numbers.
If you still cannot reach the TC tell us how you are connecting.. wireless or ethernet and how the TC is connected to the network and which model it is. -
Airport time capsule will not communicate with apple tv
I have just purchased the new AIRPORT TIME CAPSULE...it will not communicate with my APPLE TV..
Is the Time Capsule the only wireless router in your current network configuration? That is, is it connected directly to an Internet modem (and not another router) via Ethernet? Is the Apple TV in the same room, different room, or different floor from the Time Capsule?

HT1178 is it possible to use a 4th generation Time Capsule to extend a non-apple network?
Is it possible to use a 4th Gen. TC to extend a non-Apple (Netgear N600) network?
No, not if you are asking about extending the network wirelessly.
If you can connect the TC permanently to the Netgear router using a wired Ethernet connection, then the TC can be setup to provide more wireless signal coverage that way.
