Filter content on Apple TV 2

Is there any way to filter the content that gets shared on the Apple TV 2?  Many of the TV shows and movies in my library are synced to an Apple TV 1st generation for my kids, but I don't want to see them on the Apple TV 2s that I have.  I could do this with the 1st generation just by unchecking the checkmarks, but that doesn't appear to work on the 2nd generation.  Home sharing seems to show everything.

You could try using the parental controls settings but unless content is rated it won't work, and even then may be of limited usefulness.
This is yet again an aspect of AppleTV1 useful functionality that has been left out of AppleTV2 (unchecking in itunes to prevent sync/stream).

  • How do you filter content by groups?

I used to spent a great deal of time on Apple Discussions, but having been away for a couple of years I see there have been major changes. As a result, I'm finding it hard to manage tasks that used to be easy, & I would appreciate some help with these questions so that I can go back to helping others…
    1) How do you filter "Content" by groups? I used to be able to select the group I was particularly interested in (usually Logic Pro). I see that if a recent question has been asked in a group, I can click on the name of that group — but if no questions have been asked in the last few hours, this would mean page after page of scrolling…
    2) Someone answered another question I asked yesterday. I wanted to thank them & to mark the question as answered. But all I could see was the "Helpful" link (which unfortunately I clicked on before I realised it wasn't the same as the old "Answered" link). I can't see how to mark the reply as THE ANSWER, I can't see how to mark the question as answered, & I can't see any way of replying to the answer. The only text field available is to reply to myself, which seems daft — & yes, I AM logged in.
(I can't quite believe how hard it is to find out this stuff. I recall a certain meeting where the object of the exercise was to make the interface more accessible, not more opaque…)

This is a huge project at your level of knowledge expect multiple people for 18 months to 3 years to complete it.  You may want to look at the OSR kit for doing this

  • AppleTV content issues & Apple support

    Post in 2 parts:
    1. TSF Jazz radio doesn't work on AppleTV 2nd Gen. It hasn't for over two weeks.
    2. If Apple is serious about being in the content business, Apple needs to set up a way for users to report dead links and screwed up content. If it's there, it's not obvious or easy to use.
Hopefully, nobody in Cupertino believes that I'm willing to pay Apple to support them.

I reported an issue with my account a couple of days back, it's been resolved satisfactorily and already forgotten. Pretty good service I'd say.

  • Can't watch purchased content on Apple TV-?

    Hi there,
I am an American living in Saudi Arabia. I have purchased my Apple TV from the United States when I was there last and it is the 2nd generation. I have updated the software to 5.1.1. I have a few accounts on my Apple TV, but I am unable to play any purchased content on it. Everytime I try to play a Movie or TV Show from one of the accounts in my family, it says "An error occured loading this content. Try again later". How can I fix this?
Streaming through Airplay from any device (iTouch, iPhone, or Macbook Pro) works just fine, but playing purchased content through Apple TV directly does not work. It shows all my purchased content, but it will not play any of it. My iTunes store location is set to United States, as all of our accounts in the family are US accounts.
Also, previewing Movies and TV Shows in the iTunes store works fine as well. Its only watching purchased content.
    Thank you!

    Hi
I doubt it's the new update, I don't know if this is an issue specific to AppleTV but if you can play on the laptop it would seem unlikely it's because the content is blocked due to your location.
Have you unplugged AppleTV and restarted since changing the settings?  This can sometimes help fix odd behaviour and quick to do.
Hopefully somone doing teh same thing will chime in to confirm it works in Saudi Arabia with US content.

  • Is Apple censoring christian content on Apple TV?

I recently bought an apple tv, and find that although the search function on the pod casts menu claims to access the pod-casts on the I tunes store, that many pod-casts that are available through the Store are not accessible through Apple TV. Specifically many Christian pod-casts that are very popular on the Itunes Store. Is apple censoring Christian content over Apple TV?

    Hi Chenks,
I will contact one of the podcast creators, as I know him personally. I tried doing a search and found the following from Apple,
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/podcasts/specs.html
It only lists video as being a specific problem for formatting for apple tv.
The apple tv specs list these formats as acceptable for audio podcasts,
HE-AAC (V1), AAC (16 to 320 Kbps), protected AAC (from iTunes Store), MP3 (16 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV; Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound pass-through
I know his mp3 podcast is MP3 16 bit in my Itunes podcast library, so I will try contacting him to find out why they will not stream to apple TV.
If anyone else has anything enlightening to say about it I will welcome it, as it may help my conversation with him.
In the meantime, thanks Chenk for your help.

  • I'm having problems playing content on Apple TV

I am having problems playing content on Apple TV. I have home sharing turned on and I can browse to my music, photos, and videos. After I play a video or two, I am unable to play any more. Once it stops, I am also unable to play any music or display any photos. However, I am able to go to my laptop and play the exact same content through Airplay and have it display on the screen. After I either reboot the Apple TV or my computer or stop and restart iTunes, I am able to play a couple more until it happens again.

When I first started using the app, the volume was tuned to the minimum setting. I had to click on the picture to slide the volume over to right.  Did you try that?

  • Can iTunes share purchased content across Apple IDs within one household, OR

    QUESTION ONE
Will iTunes share purchased content using TWOApple IDs, across different devices within one household?
    QUESTION TWO
Should each device with a separate user have its own iCloud ID? CONCURRENTLY, should each device belonging to the SAME user use the SAME cloud ID?
    QUESTION THREE
I think I "can" use one Apple ID, and just usedifferent iCloud IDs for EACH device. Am I fundamentally wrong? Am I legallywrong?
    UNDERSTOOD FACTS:
    1)  Apple states, each person should have their own AppleID:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HE37
    2)  iCloud servicesare: mail, contacts, calendar etc...
    3)  iTunes servicesare: music, videos, Apps, etc...
You can sync iTunes across up to5 different computers using your Apple ID: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1420, however there does not seem to be alimit of how many Apple devices youcan sync within using a single iTunes account (Apple ID). *NOTE: beware automaticsynchronization of new apps..
    4)  iTunesin the Cloud is a different animal altogether! This should allow sharing of all iTunes content across all “your” devices, aslong as it was purchased thru iTunes (If not, you need to shell out an additional $25/yr for iTunes Match)
SCENARIO:  I got a new iPhone, and am giving theold iPhone to my spouse. ALL iTunes content has been managed and purchased using oneApple ID that matches one iCloud ID. Ideally, just like anyother family using multiple Apple products and usingiCloud; we would like to SHARE songs & Apps, but NOT share calendars, mail etc...(sharing contacts would be nice).
    QUESTION FOUR
Under the above scenario, must I have a “.me email” account?
I have been reading threadsabout managing content across multiple devices, using different IDs, both AppleIDs and Cloud IDs, and there is a LOT of confusion. I'm visual, so I've attached the graphic illustrating how I "think" I should proceed.  **I have not set up the new iPhone yet.
We do not have a Mac or a".me email" account, and we use Gmail.
    Any help is appreciated!

I have the computer authorized to use the Apple ID content (been using iTunes since 2007).
My issue is I cannot create sperate iCloud IDs for each device. I get prompted/directed to create a new Apple ID, which is what I want to avoid. I want to use one "FAMILY" AppleID as it is, and use iCloud IDs for each device.
My logic is: ALL my purchases are tied to an AppleID, and I just want to share on devices that leave the house, like another iPhone.
So- what to do? How to get a seperate iCloud ID without a seperate AppleID? I have an iPhone & iPad, husband has an iTouch & iPhone. How to share selectively? All devices were originally setup using one Cloud ID and one Apple ID. Now I need new IDs to represent the new user on the iTouch & iPhone.

  • How to HD content into Apple TV

How do you HD video on the Apple TV?
What are users doing to do this?
(The only source I have see is the download movie trailiers (720p) via the Apple site)

Here is one way to get high quality HD content onto your AppleTV for little more than buckets full of your time and storage. (There are much more space efficient ways, but this is the easiest to document here.)
Programs Required: EyeTV 2 + ATSC Tuner (for recording HD OTA broadcasts), MPEG Streamclip, JES Deinterlacer, QT Pro
    For 1080i Content
    1. Record over the air HD broadcast via EyeTV Hybrid or something similar.
    2. Using MPEG Streamclip output a QT movie using MotionJPEG or PhotoJPEG as the CODEC. You can also use MPEG Streamclip to scale down to 720i at this step. NOTE: Do Not deinterlace the footage yet!
This step creates a massive new file but the quality is stellar. (Ex. 23gb for one 22min 720p television show.)
    3. Taking your newly created monster file, use this as your source file for JES Deinterlacer and choose “Inverse Telecine” as the project. JES Deinterlacer is a great, free tool that allows you to easily do an inverse telecine on many types of footage. This is the best way to convert 30fps footage back to 24fps. 24fps is also a requirement for QT Pro to keep HD footage at HD resolutions when using the Export to AppleTV preset. (I.e. Even if your footage is 720p it will downconvert to SD if the frame rate is anything other than 24fps or 23.98fps.) JES will create another gargantuan file of equal size and quality to your first file, but now it will be in perfect-looking progressive scan, 24fps. More detailed instructions on this tool are available in its help file.
    4. Take your 2nd gargantuan file, and compress it via QT Pro using the AppleTV preset and voila, you have a great HD file that is just as good looking as any of the HD trailers on Apple.
    For 720p Content
    1. Record over the air HD broadcast via EyeTV Hybrid or something similar.
    2. Using MPEG Streamclip output a QT movie using MotionJPEG or PhotoJPEG as the CODEC.
This step creates a massive new file but the quality is stellar. (Ex. 23gb for one 22min 720p television show.)
    3. Taking your newly created monster file, use this as your source file for JES Deinterlacer and Choose “reinterlace” as the project. JES will create another gargantuan file of equal size and quality to your first file, but now it will be in 720i. (JES Deinterlacer requires the input footage to be interlaced, hence the additional step. This doesn’t degrade your video.)
    3. Taking your 3rd newly created monster file, go back into JES Deinterlacer and choose “Inverse Telecine” as the project. JES will create the final mountain of a file in 24fps.
    4. Take your last gargantuan file, and compress it via QT Pro using the AppleTV preset.
Be warned, this process can take hours even on a dual core processor Mac, but it will give you some shows and movie that will make your AppleTV shine.

  • How to get your own content on Apple TV

I'm considering buying an Apple TV to replace my Mac Mini (as I don't really use much other than Front Row anyway, so a couple of questions:
    1. Is the only way to get my own content on the Apple TV to sync it with iTunes running on another computer? I have an iPod Touch, and I don't really want to have to store two versions of every movie in iTunes on my iMac; an ATV version (better quality) and an iPod Touch version (takes up less room).
    2. Is there a way to play DVDs on the Apple TV (besides ripping them)? For example, is it possible to stream DVD content from another Apple Mac on the same network? Or perhaps plug a DVD drive into the USB port?

I also have an aTV and iPod Touch. I store everything formatted for the Touch. Personally, the difference in quality is negligible for me.
Then there must be something wrong with setup, because I have encoded videos (using Handbrake) for both Apple TV and iPod Touch, and when I play them on my Mac Mini (which is connected to an HD Plasma screen) the difference in quality is massive (i.e. the iPod Touch videos are rougher than a badger's arse). Maybe you're not connected to an HD set with an HDMI cable?
Connected to a 720p HD set through HDMI. It might just be a preferences issue. I don't mind a little pixelation in broad colour gradients ... Handbrake's Touch setting does an excellent job on higher detailed objects like people.
In short, I prefer to only have one copy of a video over having a 420p rip of a DVD.
