Filter plugin - Pixels become grey when alpha set below 50 (ish)?
Hi,
My filter plugin modifies the alpha channel values of various pixels and I noticed that when an 8 bpc pixel's alpha is set below 50 (or so) that the pixel ends up turning grey, as if the R,G,B values were all set to the same value. Is this Photoshop's behaviour when painting/compositing pixels that are very transparent or am I confused? :-)
Thanks,
Neil
Thanks for your replies.
My prefs are set to show the transparency checkerboard, and my code is directly modifying the RGBA values of 8 bpc pixels. The '50' I referred to above was the actual alpha channel uint8 value, not a percentage.
The following is the code I'm using to test with. I put it in the DoFilter() function, at line 401, in the Dissolve sample project and disabled the for loop that iterates over the planes. I'm using the CS2 SDK and am testing with PS CS3.
I'm testing with a PSD with 2 layers in RGB 8 bpc mode. The background layer is entirely black and I've tried filling the foreground layer with various solid colors to test with. I'm applying the filter to this foreground layer.
1. With a color of 255,0,0 after applying the filter the new color (in the Info palette, or with the eye dropper) is 40,0,0.
2. With a color of 0,200,0 the filter changes it to 0,0,0.
3. With a color of 200,255,0 the filter changes it to 0,40,0.
4. With a color of 180,215,87 the filter changes it to 215,215,215. This is what made me think it was turning to gray.
-------- Begin --------
// Get RGBA interleaved pixel channels
gFilterRecord->outLoPlane = gFilterRecord->inLoPlane = 0;
gFilterRecord->outHiPlane = gFilterRecord->inHiPlane = 3;
// update the gFilterRecord with our latest request
*gResult = gFilterRecord->advanceState();
if (*gResult != noErr) return;
uint8 *pixel = (uint8 *)gFilterRecord->outData;
const int32 dataRowBytes = gFilterRecord->outRowBytes;
VRect tileRect = GetOutRect();
const int32 tileHeight = tileRect.bottom - tileRect.top;
const int32 tileWidth = tileRect.right - tileRect.left;
const int32 tileByteWidth = tileWidth * 4;
for (int32 pixelY = 0; pixelY < tileHeight; ++pixelY)
for (int32 pixelX = 0; pixelX < tileWidth; ++pixelX)
pixel += 3; // Skip RGB
*pixel++ = 40;
pixel += (dataRowBytes - tileByteWidth);
-------- End --------
Thanks,
Neil

Hi All,
I'm trying to debug a crash in Photoshop after returning from a filter plugin.
In the case that the filter plugin has “done nothing” or the user has elected not to save the work, the filter plugin sets the value of *result to be -128 or 2. If the plugin has completed successfully and some work has been saved then *result is of course set to 0.
When *result is set to other than 0, though, Photoshop immediately crashes after the plugin has returned from PluginMain.
The backtrace of the crashed thread is at the bottom of this message.
If I alter our filter code so that *result is set to 0, without any other change having been made, there is no crash, which leaves me a bit stumped. Clearly this isn't appropriate, since it results in the new filter layer being created, which the user doesn't want if the filter was cancelled!
Any suggestions about where to start investigating?
The sample backtrace below occurs immediately after I return from PluginMain (having been passed a selector of 5) having set *result=2, *data=0.

If purchased, I would try to contact the company that made it.
If you are developing, then I would get the original Dissolve (or other) example and make sure it is working correctly with the OK and in the Cancel scenario. If so, then copy that example and start modifying and working your way towards what you now have. You should be able to tell when things go wrong and that would help me figure out your crasher. -
Why are my transparent pixels becoming opaque (grey)?
I have PSE 6, and am using it for digital scrapbooking. Some of the elements have transparent pixels, which allows you to see the background and layers beneath the elements. For some reason, when I drag one of these elements onto a background or another element, the transparent pixels become gray, creating an ugly grey box around the element. Also, I see when the new layer is created (on the background), by dragging the element onto the background, it becomes a "frame layer". Not sure exactly what that means, but I am thinking it might have something to do with this problem. Hopefully someone has a suggestion
thanksHave a look at #5 in the link below which describes this "feature" and how to get around it.

I am unable to see any POP3 or IMAP tab when I set up an account in my iphone 4S. Hence by default all my email accounts become IMAP and the messages are deleted from the server when I delete them from the iphone.
ok sorry everyone but i solved it myself but the solution is so nuts i've posted it here to help others who have the same problem.
to setup a comcast imap account on your iphone:
go to mail, contacts, etc in settings
under accts, select add account
select "other"
new screen, choose "add mail account"
now on the new acct screen you must enter your name, email address and password for your GMAIL acct ! (yes i said your gmail acct !, or some other acct with a NON comcast address).
hit next
then the acct verifies
when verified a screen will open with all the acct settings for this acct AND @ the top of the screen are the 2 buttons > imap or POP
select imap and THEN CHANGE ALL THE ACCOUNT information to the comcast account !
then hit next and the account will take a couple minutes to verify but it will verify and now you have a comcast imap acct set up on your iphone. The problem must be that when the iphone sends the initial verify acct info to comcast (if you enter that information first) the comcast server is simply not setup yet to signal the iphone that there is an imap option. -
Hello! I'm using Aperture with Efex plugins and notice, what when I saving result in plugin and go back to aperture, preview mode is going to grey color and not working until I reboot Aperture. What is intresting - in full screen mode everything works fine. Did you saw this problem?
It seems there's a workaround here:

Newbie ?, alpha setting when paste in place
Hi, I am teaching myself flash. I am creating smiley faces and then copying them to a banner. I have two fla files open, one has the smiley in it and some layers of the smiley are made up of areas with a alpha setting of less then 100%.
When I highlight all of the smiley and copy, then move to the other other open fla file that has a blue banner, and 'paste' the smiley pastes ok but all the areas that have an alpha setting of less than 100% have a blue shade to them from the banner. How do I prevent this and retain the colours I had?
ThanksThis is because it is transperent, so it shows what's behind it. You can give them %100 Alpha from the Color drop-down list in the properties panel to remove the Alpha or just choose None.
If you want similar look of transparency on the other file, try to use Brightness instead of Alpha from the Color drop-down list.
Hope this helps!!

Just brought a new iPod touch and when I set it up (twice now, after resenting to factory settings) there are grey squares on all screens at the top and the apps over these squares won't open. Any suggestions?
I can't envision what yo are seeing.
If you restored to factory settings/new iPod via iTunes (Not via Settings>General>Reset>Erase all Content and Setting) and still have the problem that indicates a hardware problem.

Can someone help me with this question? Why iPad 2 disables camera when I set up my Exchange mail account? How can I enable camera along with using mail?
The iPad is not disabling the camera - the administrator for your Exchange account is. You need to go to the person who administers your Exchange account and ask them to lift the restriction on cameras in their Exchange system.

How to handle transparent parts of layers in filter plugin?
What is the right way to handle layers in a filter plugin so as to preserve the colors at the semi-transparent edges of the opaque parts of a layer?
It seems the inData my plugin gets from Photoshop already has the image composited (based on the alpha channel) with a white background. So even if I just copy all the RGB and alpha data from inData back to outData, I end up with light-colored edges around the non-transparent parts of the layer. Simply setting inHiPlane=outHiPlane=3 (since all I really want to modify is the RGB data) doesn't seem to work either.Chris,
I'm not sure what you mean by treating it as if there was no transparency. Simply copying the RGBA planes from inData to outData results in those light-colored edges. Likewise if I set inHiPlane=outHiPlane=3 and just copy the RGB planes.
Can you tell me how to specify how the data should be matted? It seems to default to a white matte. Ideally, I would have thought I'd want to get from inData the color value at each pixel in the layer _before_ any matting is applied, along with the alpha values. Then for example, a red pixel at the edge that's 50% transparent would be RGBA = (255, 0, 0, 127). It seems like that's what my plugin needs to hand back to Photoshop (when I don't modify that pixel), in order for it to be able to correctly matte it against any background. Instead, what I get from inData is (255, 127, 127, 127), which then shows up when I hand it back as a pink pixel of 50% transparency on the edge. Can you tell me what I'm missing here? -
Using log and trasfer but pixels become magnified in movement
I have been using final cut pro for a very long time. I usually use XDCAM trasfer to transfer footage from my Sony EX 3 camera. However, I bought a Sony HDR - CX560E (MTS) files and am using Log and transfer. Transfer works fine. Except when i look at the footage the only way i can describe it is like this:
When there is any movement in the frame the pixels become very magnified in some areas. Almost like they are poping. It looks terrible. At first i though it was the project setting, however, when i go to the file on my computer hard drive it is exactly the same that is why i think it might have to do with the way it is imported. Or either recorded. But i dont think it is the way it is recorded because it plays back on the view finder fine. It transfers as Apple ProRes 422. I dont know if it is creating a glitch with the canon plugin.
Recorded at HD Quality
50i
Quality set to highest quality (FX) on camera
i have looked on the forums but dont know what to do now
Final cut Pro 7.0.3Ok, well i think i have managed to do it which is great. I would much rather do it straight from Final cut and will still try to figure it out. If anyone has any ideas as to why this is happening than please share. I have managed to convert it from toast to ProRes 442 (which is what i am doing in Final cut), However the picture seems fine. It always asks me to render the audio which only takes a few seconds, but i have no idea why i need to render it.

Filter plugin. Problem after change image depth.
Hi All !
I already wrote filter plugin it work fine but only for image depth 8bit, after i change image depth on 16 or 32 bits I getting error msg box from photoshop.
I try change on 'destination.colBits = 8' or 'destination.colBits = pChannel->depth' or ' (pChannel->bounds.bottom - pChannel->bounds.top) * pChannel->depth;' but all the same.
PixelMemoryDesc destination;
destination.data = data; //*pixel
destination.depth = pChannel->depth;
destination.rowBits = (pChannel->bounds.right - pChannel->bounds.left) * pChannel->depth;
destination.colBits = 8;
destination.bitOffset = 0 ;
Please help someone !
Very Thanks in Advance !

How to disable a filter plugin if applied on a smart object?
I've been looking for a way to disable a filter plugin when applied on a smart object for a couple hours now but I must be looking in the wrong way...
I was thinking of a property to set/unset in the PIPL file but the resource guide pdf isn't much help.
Any ideas?Has anybody ever encountered this problem?

How do you keep the colors of an image true when you set it as a background?
I have an image with lines in it and a black blackground. When I set it as a background :
html {
background: url(../Images/backgroundimage.jpg);
background-repeat:auto;
background-position:center top;
the black is a couple shades lighter so when I place a <div> with an <img>that is also mainly black on top of it, the top image is much darker than the background. I have no other css tags on the div other than a margin. The only difference in the images is I saved the background from photoshop and the image in the div from illustrator but I dont think that should have effected anything. Does anybody know anything about this because I am seriously stumped.
ThanksWe have been here before…
Firstly, Adobe' Photoshop has the ability to save a color profile with an image. That color profile will be consistent across all versions of Adobe software. Problem is, Adobe does not make web browsers (and that is probably a good thing).
When you save images for websites, you need to go through the proper Photoshop or Illustrator dialog. You want to Save for Web & Other Devices. Why? because the applications will take the image out of CMYK color space (if it is in that color space) and make it RGB. They will also try to translate the colors in a sensible way. When you use this dialog, you will see various options for JPG, including ICC Profile. Turning this on or off will change how the colors get mapped, and some experimentation to get best results is a good idea.
I have it turned off, presently.
The image will be set up for 72 dots per inch automatically, and you can, then, resize the image to optimize it for the website you are working on. If you are trying to fill a hole for an image that is 350 pixels wide by 250 tall, don't save the image as 1125 wide by 1024 high. That will take a long time to download from your server to whatever device is displaying it. Your original image will not be changed and you can navigate your path to your defined website's images folder.
This should help you immeasurably. I should mention that If I am trying to match a background exactly, I will tend to knock out that color from the image, save the image as a .PNG file with transparency (where that particular color is) and place the image on the background in question with the background color I am trying to match on the website.

Images become blurred when placed in a PSD document
I have a QCODE (barcode) which is a 2-bit pure black and white images.
However, when I place it in another open document, the image becomes blurred when it is placed and the definition of the QCODE is compromised.
How can I stop PS from blurring the image.
I'm guessing it is trying to smooth out the placed image, but i don't want this.
Many thanks.but i don't want this.
Place it pixel exact! Resampling means the image is placed at sub-pixel values. Aside from that you would also get softness if the image is not properly converted to the target color space and automatic conversion creates mix colors whose individual components blend differently with neighboring pixels, which in part is simply an artifact of on-screen simulation. In any case, you will only be able to get a proper barcode in CMYK/ Duotone/ Multichannel modes, where you can make sure it appears on the spot black ink separation so it does not get halftoned and loses its sharpness again. ideally it would even be native vector data...

Hello, I always work with Linux (red hat) to build our RAC clusters, and I never have seen "abnormal" performance and stability issues. Well, now I'm in a project to build a RAC in AIX 5.3. Somebody please can share the experience on this plataform?
