Filter Question 1: Shift Field - when to shift it?

And by "shift it", I'm really asking in what order to place it, relative to any other filters being applied. And is there a rule of thumb for this particular filter being first or last in the stack?
The Specific Issue:
I notice FCP applies the filter automatically when I add HD material to a standard def Timeline (see "Workflow" description below), where the extra material has a different "Field Dominance" than the main footage. This triggers a green render bar, which thankfully doesn't take long to process.
But I'm starting to see some odd behavior when I then add other filters to one of these clips whose Fields have been automatically Shifted by FCP.
Specifically, I've been testing MagicBullet's "Noise Reducer" filter on a few of these clips (ones where I've had to magnify the image more than it really wants to be), and once the absurdly long render finally finishes*, the playback of just these clips gets very wonky on my external monitor (with a flashing blue that eventually takes over the whole screen, but only for these clips -- and FinalCut's telling me there's nothing left to render).

Interestingly, when I drag the Shift Fields filter from its default top-of-the-stack position in the Viewer down to the bottom, so that it comes after the MB Noise Reducer -- and then wait for another huge render to finish -- now everything seems to play back fine.
Both filters (FCP's Shift Fields and MB's Noise Reducer) are configured in their default settings, and this apparent conflict with the Shift Fields filter appears to not occur in relation to any other filters I've also been testing (such as Sharpen and Deflicker).
So -- is this just one of these trial-and-error things, where you keep reordering the filters till they seem happy, or is there a reason why the automatically applied Shift Fields filter should always be last in the stack (even though intuitively it feels like something which should be applied first)?

*Workflow Description*
(which might be of interest to other one-man-band, tight-budget videographers)
+I'm currently cutting a series of videos done for a local theatre company. My A-cam is a Sony MiniDV shooting 4:3, and my Timeline is the basic NTSC-DV easy setup. I generally also set up a B-cam at a different angle, which is locked off to get a static shot of the full performing area. This camera is a compact AVCHD unit, shooting at full 1920x1080. I put its material on a separate video track, and when I need to cut to it I use the Motion tab to frame the shot, resize it, and crop in as desired. Sometimes I'll even keyframe a pan and/or slight zoom to give the effect of a human cameraperson following the action live. Since both cameras are recording continuously, I only have to sync up the two tracks once -- and the end product gives a reasonably convincing impression of a two-person shoot.+

Clearly I need to check in with the Jolly Red Giant himself, since I'm wondering if he's the one I should be pointing my finger at with regard to a bizarre issue I'm encountering: trying to export a previously harmless sequence which now contains clips with two Red Giant / Magic Bullet filters -- all fully rendered, but the Export time is expanding faster than a Supernova.

  • Why is the Video Filter "Shift Fields" Automatically being added to my clips?

    In the timeline, I've been noticing that FCP is randomly adding the "Shift Field" video filter to about 75% of all my clips in the timeline.
    Is this common?

  • How do you get the rest of the form to shift down when a field grows in a subform

    I am using ES2, I am trying to get a form to shift down when a field grows in a subform, and nothing I tries works.  I am not an expert in this area, but all the help I have tried on-line does not seem to workI would be more than happy to email the form to anyone that could give me some assistance.  I have already spent too much time on this project, and if I cant get it to work, I will have to move back to a simple word form without all the fancey bells and whistles, but I hate to move backwards.  Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you so much, I tried to duplicate the form from Assure and something is still wrong.  The background of the subform is not light green, I am not sure if the color was for display purpose only, but it still did not flow right either.  I was unable to find the option in the testfield to "Display all of the content (on exit).  I am also getting an warning note: The object may not work properly. Although the object is allowed to break, deselecting the "allow page breaks within content" option of the parent object restricts this object from breaking between pages.    Here is the settings as they are currently set:

    Hi everyone,
    I exported a movie from after effects in "animation" and imported it to FCP. it automatically added a 'shift fields' filter set to +1. this filter makes the focus soft and i am wondering why it is there and if i need it at all (i don't even know what it's supposed to do...).
    btw, the quality of the picture, regardless of the filter, deteriorated quite a bit from the original QT movie that I exported from FCP to AE. i thought that digital copied don't lose quality... or was i supposed to export the movie in a special format? (I used DV pal).

    You imported a clip made with the Apple Animation codec which uses upper field order (lines 1,3,5,7,9 etc are written first) into a DV Sequence which uses lower field order (lines 2,4,6,8 etc are written first).
    So Final Cut Pro corrected the field order for you. What's not to like?
    Never judge the quality of your output based on the FCP Canvas.
    It always shows a low res proxy image to better conserve resources for real time playback.
    To see the true quality, you need a calibrated external broadcast monitor, or at the very least, an excellent television set.

  • Disable automatic shift fields filter

    Hello! FCP is adding a Shift Fields filter automatically to my sequences. I understand the theory and purpose of Field Dominance but for my current sequences it DOES NOT need to be changed - I've tested it. This auto filter application is making extra work for me visa vie I need to delete each individually. Anyway to disable the automatic Field Dominance correction for a specific project / sequence?

    You can't disable it.
    If you bring in a clip with a different field dominance to what your Sequence Setting is, the filter is applied.
    You didn't mention it, but what video format are you working in, what is the Sequence Setting and what is the field dominance setting of your project?

    The work path will remain positioned relative to the same underlying pixels after a crop.  Are you trying to position it relative to one or more image edges after cropping?  I don't think you can do that without moving the workpath after the crop.

    what you should do depends on the nature of the problem. a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. are you certain that the issue you are looking at is one of incorrectly interpreted field order? if it is, then you can manually apply the Shift Field filter to correct for this.

    again, what you should do depends on the nature of the problem. indeed, HDV and DV do not have the same native field order, but are you sure that is th eproblem in this instance? how slow is this slow mo? how did you create the slow mo? it may be that the strobing effect is the natural result of the slow mo.

    the orginal MPEG2 files already have the wrong field order? and you want software that can correct for that field order problem during the conversion process? try DVDxDV Pro or Cinematize (both commercial). alternatively there is JES Deinterlacer for after the fact correction.

  • HD clips and "shift fields"

    Hi. I have a doubt on how to work with HD clips.
    What I want to do is place a selection of a HD clip into a DVNTSC (easy setup) sequence. All my other clips are DV, 720 x 480 (640 x 480) at 29.97 fps. And what I noticed, is that as soon as I place the clip into the sequence, Final Cut, by default, puts a "shift fields" filter, set on +1 (the shift direction).
    My clip format is: Apple XDCAM HD 1080i60 (35 Mb/s VBR), 1440 x 1080 (1888 x 1062), Millones. 16 Bits Entero (Little Endian), Estereo, 48.000 KHz. FPS: 29.97. Size: 1920 x 1080
    I have no problems with the size of the clip or anything. Is just the doubt about that filter. Should I remove this filter?

    so the shift fields filter should stay... ok. But other thing that I noticed, is that when I applied a tint filter to my clip, It would lost the effect on the last frame... why does that keep on happening?

    Hi Preran,
    Sure, I can share with other users but I am not sure this solution was the best, but it works for me.   Somehow something about Dreamweaver is very complicated to use and understand- just in my opinion.  All I did was to add another div box outside of the 3rd text box which I created as div box (also did it for the 2nd text box since they aligned close to each other).  I know it shouldn't be needed since the text box is already a div box itself and my 1st and 2nd text boxes were okay.

  • Can you use scripting to shift fields?

    Is there a way to shift fields up or down using scripting?  Have a form where fields are hidden based on the value of a radio button group.  When the fields are hidden, I want to shift the remaining visible fields up so no gap is present.
    Is this possible?

    I assigned the a variable in the beginning.  Below is the actual script I am using.  It is a combination of my original script and the rect script I found in the reference guides:

    How the Resources can be made available for the 2nd/3rd shift, only during a certain period. Resource should be made available for 2nd/3rd Shift as and when required period
    Since the requirement for the shift is not sure during the Master Data(Resource) creation or at the Planning phase, It can only be decided upon during the shop floor execution based on the load and the urgency of the production compeletion. Is there a way to select/extend the Shift for 2nd/3rd shifts to make the resource available, ONLY as and when required

    1. How this Resource availability - Extension will get accounted in CRP
    I am not sure why you even care.  This is execution, not planning (predicting the future).  In effect, you are declaring, either upon execution or very near to the actual execution date,  that the existing plan was unworkable.  You declared a new cap plan, based on the reality of the capacity situation.  Many companies don't even bother with such niceties.
    Anyhow, these additional hours will show as available in CRP.  If you schedule your existing orders to utilize these hours, then the additional hours will be consumed, by any orders that are scheduled to consume them.
    When the Shop floor user decides in the mid-of-the day and plans to run the 2nd shift for the production completion for only one day to achieve the target, should the same procedure Master data change be done(each a day - when required)
    Who even cares?  You will confirm orders during execution, based on what actually happened, and these confirmations will consume existing capacity requirements.  Once you have confirmed your orders. why do you need to change your old Cap plan to match the consumption actuality that happened during execution?  It is all a moot point, since it has already happened.   Planning is important only to predict the future.  What is the point of changing the old (inaccurate) plan to match the reality of what actually happened?

    what are you talking about? I definitely don't understand the question.
    Capacity plan lets you plan what you are going to do in the future.  Execution tells you what actually happened.  Who cares what machines you actually used/didn't use?  You either executed the cap plan, or you didn't.  Execution will seldom match the plan.  The only thing a planner is interested in is "how much available capacity do I  have now, and how much remaining load is there on the capacity, as of right now.  No other questions are relevant.   Previous plans are irrelevant.  Comsumption variances are irrelevant (except to help you fine-tune existing future plans).
    I don't believe there is much benefit to 'fiddling' with the previously created plan so as to make it match reality. Just execute.  If manufacturing has to work additional shifts, let them do so.  I don't believe It is really necessary to change the old plan to reflect the fact that manufacturing decided they needed to work additional shifts to meet the requirements of the cap plan..

  • Shift Fields problems...

    Hi. I wonder if someone could help me with shift fields.
    Well, I've got some HDV (SonyV1U) 1080i footage. I'm editing it just by dropping this footage on my DV NTSC timeline, that's because I also have some DV material. I don't have any video monitor to check how the video plays...just the computer monitor.
    I'd notice that some of my 1080i footage has an automatic shift field (+1) filter, and it seems to be flickering a little.
    Should I remove it from all takes? My finish output would be a Standart DVD and a miniDV tape.
    I've edited almost 30 minutes and I worried if i should turn off all shift fields or not, cause it's gonna take me some time...
    I'm looking foward for an answer.

    Are you manually selecting an HTML 5 document then?

  • When cmd+shift+d does not work on a mac, here's what to do.

    I have been trying to authorize my new Macbook Pro 2011 for weeks. (I set up and authorized my iPhone with no problem.) Whenever I try to authorize my computer using the Digital Editions instructions given at the bottom of this post, I get the message:
    Activation Server error - code E_AUTH_NOT_READY
    Digital Editions encounter an error on the activation server.
    I've read all the forums and tried everything. To deal with this problem, the answers in the forums say to deauthorize my computer and the reauthorize it but, no matter what I do, I cannot get it to deauthorize. i have tried opening ADE and hitting Command+Shift+D--using command because I have a mac--(tried this in library view and in reader view) but nothing happens. This is different from so many others who have solved this problem using Command+Shift+D. When I hit Command+Shift+D, nothing happens at all. I get no screen so I cannot hit Erase Authorization. I don't know how to get rid of the authorization that must exist somewhere but I don't know where. Only after I get rid of it, will I be able to reautorize my computer so I can read ebooks from the library, etc.
    I also tried uninstalling ADE 2.0 and then reinstalling it. I did not get the set-up wizard to help me authorize my computer. So I went to the Help menu and chose "Authorize Computer" and got a window titled "Authorize Your Computer." The eBook Vendor was already shown as Adobe ID. All I had to do was enter my Adobe ID and Password. I did this (which worked successfully on my iPhone) and got the same error screen message noted above:

    I have just encountered the same problem and all the same frustrations as karliekate, except that I haven't got a new eReader.  I just use my PC, so I don't know what might have caused this.  The Adobe Help (!!) pages say to contact the eBook provide (the library) whose site says contact Adobe, although it should be well known by now that software producers like Adobe, Apple, Microsoft and many others are completely indifferent to their customers' problems.
