Filtering by Rating and stacks

The behavior changed in 1.5. Previously filtering was triggered by the pick of the stack.
Example if I rated the top photo/pick of the stack as 5 stars and I was viewing unrated photos, it would dissappear from that view. (which is what I expect)
In 1.5 the photo doesn't dissappear because the other images in the stack are techincally unrated.
This new behavior makes sorting photos a lot harder. In my work flow I group similar photos together, and then rate them on another pass.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't like leaving unrated photos so for me this behavior is better.
You can create a Smart Album, search by unrated images, make sure you have 'Ignore Stack Grouping' NO selected. This way photos will be shown in closed stacks, if you rate an image 1* or over and move to the following image the rated image will dissapear together with its stack.

I like to use the rating system to sort my images but if I also use stacks, it seems to render the filter function inoperative so if I perform the filter, I get shown the correct results, but also a load of incorrect ones too. They have a symbol on them and say 'no match' but this prevents me from then exporting my search results to another folder - because they're mixed in with a load of unwanted shots.
Does anyone have a solution to this please? It seems that the stacks function returns everything in the stack, even if only one or 2 images actually matches the criteria and its stopping me using stacks right now.

I understand your point.
My own position is that by the time John R Ellis wrote his severe (but totally justified) paper about the Organizer, Adobe had both a marketing and a technical dilemma : with modest development teams, choosing what was most urgent, fixing bugs or adding new features. By that time I had chosen. The organizer has already too many features and bug fixing was the priority. The many troubles with the Autoanalyzer proved my point.
In the meantime, Adobe added Bridge as a substitute for Macs; lately, the price of Lightroom has dropped to a sensible level and Bridge has been removed with a feeble Mac version of the Organizer. A number of bugs have been fixed in PSE10, but the main problem for most people was that the bugs of the Folder view were not solved by its being crippled by ignoring subfolders. Since too many users want to use the Organizer as a browser, the Organizer acceptance by its amateur public was severely endangered.
I am convinced there will be a PSE11 version, if only to get the Mac version nearer to the Windows one. We'll see what the new version has to offer. Fixing old bugs is necessary, but adapting to the new 64 bits OS and the now general use of external drives or NAS should not be ovelooked.

Ratings and Stacks

I have read many of the past messages on stacks and the inability to apply changes/ratings to all images within a stack at the same time. Let me explain what I'm doing and why this is frustrating.
In many of my shoots I'm bracketing every shot. I take the images into LR and stack my brackets. I may end up with 100 or more stacks, each with (3) images. I now want to do a quick rating and go through the stacks giving a 1-star to those I want to process further. I do a 1-star filter and now want to go into the stacks to pick the best of the three. Can't do it because LR won't apply the rating to all the images in the stack so the filter leaves behind the hidden stacked images. What a pain. Please give me the option to apply the rating to all the images in a stack something like holding the option key when applying the rating.

There seems to be a glitch with Stacks and Smart
Albums. If I base a smart album on a set of
parameters and the photo is not the select of a stack
it does not get selected for the smart album. For
example if I make a select based on a client then
choose later to make a 5 star rating out of the stack
that is not the select it will not appear in the 5
star library smart folder until I break the stack.
So I have to go back to the original stack and break
it to allow the search to work. Does anyone know
how to fix this?
In the parameters for the smart album you need to check "Ignore Stack Groupings".
Be aware of an interesting issue you may run into later around this. If you drag a set of images out of a smart album that ignores groupings into a "normal" album that holds images, you will only see images that are also stack picks show up in the destination album. I have lobbied via feedback for Aperture to always make an image drug into an album from a smart album the "Album Pick" for that album to eliminate that exact problem.
Another odd behavior of smart albums you may find useful is that whatever level you define a smart album at is the level it always searches, no matter where you move it after. So you can make a top-level smart album doing a search across many folders and projects, and keep it neatly stored under a different top level folder where if you had tried to put the smart album to start with it would not see images.

Hi,
As you said you could do it at the report level and also at the universe level.
One more way is to create the filters in the universe levele and add them in thequery filter.
Ex: in the filter you need to write :
Column1 is null and and column 2 is not null etc.

Is it possible to sort my library by both "Rating" AND "Last Played?"

I have been transferring my music digitally since 5 years before iTunes ever existed. I have just finally developed a rating system that I will be able to benefit from. So, I want go though almost two decades worth of my music, and rate all these songs.
I'd like to rate my songs which I've never listened to, while listening to them. Once rated, I don't want to hear the song again until I've rated all songs.
The problem arises because I can't efficiently just shuffle my music and rate, because iTunes will more commonly play my already-rated songs. Even if shuffle was actually random (like it used to be) I'd still have music that would remain unrated before I started getting repeats of the rated ones.
This can not be accomplished with a smart playlist either, because finding only 'unrated' and 'never played' songs will remove the song as soon as I rate it, and stop playing all music in my library. I considered [unshuffled] column-sorting by rating in a smart playlist that only finds songs with a play count of 0; this allows me to start playing the first 0 song in the full list of 0's, but the moment I rate it, it jumps up with the rated songs I've already rated, and continues to play the next track from it's new position.
Ideally, I'd like to [column] sort by Last Played FIRST, and see all the unplayed ones at the top of the list, THEN sort by rating, and view unrated ones reshuffled to the top of that list. But iTunes won't seem to sort in this manner. In other words, It won't re-sort an already-sorted column.
If the rules of my sorting system would help you understand what I'm trying to do, they are included below.
STAGE ONE (what I'm trying to find an efficient process for)
★ - DELETE
★★ - SONG NOT PREFERABLE
★★★ - LISTENED/KEEPING
★★★★ - KNOWN, LIKED SONG
★★★★★ - NEW, LIKED SONG
STAGE TWO
Delete all ★ songs.
Decrease rating of all ★★★★, ★★★ and ★★ remaining songs by ★
[example: select all ★★★ star songs and mass-edit track info and change to ★★ star songs]
New Status:
★ - SONG NOT PREFERABLE
★★ - LISTENED/KEEPING
★★★ - KNOWN, LIKED SONG
★★★★★ - [ BECOMES: ] RE-EVALUTE SONG (since I've only heard it once, after all)
Once I've reevaluated all the songs that are new to me, the ★★★★ category will be reserved for my most favorite songs at the moment.
And all ★★★★★ star ratings will continue to be songs I still need to give some time to before I decide whether I like hearing them or not.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
I know this may seem like overkill, but if I could implement this rating system, I could listen to my music with way less skipping. I'm not going to start deleting songs from complete albums, but I don't need to listen to it if I am not into it. Sometimes a song will be perfect as part of an album, but it's not a jam you're interested in hearing anymore otherwise. Doug's Rate Me! Script doesn't work under my listening habits.

Yes it is, if you have updated your Mac to use AirPort Utility 6.2 and both the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express have been updated to use version 7.6.3 firmware.

Rating and labelling images is not working in Photoshop Bridge CS6. The Rating and Label headings in the Label menu are greyed out. Any ideas for correcting this would be appreciated.

Colorsync Utility. Whenever I click on Devices or Filters, it hangs and I have to force quit. Any ideas as to how to fix this?

I'm having an issue with Colorsync Utility. When I open the utility I can access Profile First Aid, Profiles and the Calculator but whenever I click on Devices or Filters, it hangs and I have to force quit. I recently re-profiled my NEC monitor using xRite i1Profiler Pro and saved the ICC profile as "version 4". When I went to use the Nik's ColorEfex Pro 4 plug-in, in Adobe Photodhop CS5.1 (Creative Suite 5.5), I got a cyan cast across all my images. Nik said it had to do with a corrupt ICC profile but when I ran Profile First Aid, the only profile that came up as needing repair ( and couldn't) was EW-sRGB. I reprofiled the monitor only this time I saved it as "version 2", and the plug-in worked fine. What surprises me is that Colorsync Utilty always used to work without issue, and I never seemed to have a problem creatinga and saving ICC profiles using version 4. Any ideas as to what is causing this problem and how to fix this?

I updated my software, and deleted my history/cache. Also, when I try to use Preview, it says that it was forced to quit while restoring windows, so when I click restore windows nothing happens. I can't view anything either. The only thing I can think that may have caused these problems is I tried to shut down and had to force it to by holding the power button. I rarely shut it off.

Files saved from Elements 12 editor not automatically picked up and stacked in organizer

I have just upgraded to Elements 12 from version 6 and find that if I select a file in the organizer, select "Edit with Photoshop Elements editor", carry out the editing and save the file with the boxes for "include in elements organizer" and "Save in Version Set with original" checked the edited photo is not automatically included in the organizer nor stacked. On returning to the Organizer it tells me that a new photo has been found in the watched folders and I have to import it and stack it manually. What can I do to corret this problem?

You can Filter (not sort) on both color label and rating if you want, open the Filter Bar with the backslash key, then click on Attribute, and then select the stars and color label of interest. If you really meant "sort" and not filter, then you can't do this in Lightroom.

These are custom fields not created by SAP but by someone in your project.
Just in EKKO if you have some Check Tables against these fields. If yes then these fields are getting populated from there. Else from some screen or program wherein user is entering some input.

Confused on albums and stacks

Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard and Aperture 2.1.4 I had built three albums with 45 pictures each, and put them in a folder. I used these albums to sync to my iPhone, and looking at my iPhone all 135 pictures are in the right place.
After upgrading SL and Aperture few days ago, I went through my pictures for the last year and created a few dozen stacks.
Today I noticed in the Project Bar that the albums now have 232, 1247 and 1088 pictures.
After a little investigation, it seems, that in any album that had a picture that is now in a stack, the album now includes the whole stack inside the album! I'm able to reproduce the 'feature' by just selecting a picture and 'stacking' it with any other random picture. Unfortunately, if I unstack (i.e. not close) the stack, all the surplus pictures are not removed from the albums.
The stacks of pictures I am referring to are not versions of a master, they are groups of pictures from a single photo event.
Suggestions on eliminating this behavior?

Well, admitting my confusion, here are more details:
I have about 14,000 pictures, 75GB, in Aperture, half are RAW, the rest jpeg. Due to the size of the library all files are referenced.
When I load pictures from the camera into Aperture, they go into a project based on the year (i.e. 2007, 2008, 2009). Years are averaging about 1,500 - 2,500 photos. Inside each Project (year) are a group of Smart Albums based on month, subject or location. All referenced masters for 2008-2009 are on my MBP, all previous Projects (years) have been relocated to an external drive using Aperture's move feature. The stack problem only involves referenced masters on the MBP.
In the Project Pane, underneath the Library I have two folders:
- One folder contains smart albums based on keywords or metadata that crosses Projects (i.e. multiple years)
- The second folder 'Collections' is made up of static albums (and light tables) that I use to sync or export to iPhone, Flickr, websites, etc. These photos also come from various projects.
Recently I got tired of scrolling through hundreds and hundreds of pictures in a project, so if I ran into 30 pictures from a dog show, or party, or vacation, I just selected them and turned them into a stack. I created 20-30 stacks for 2009, another 15-20 for 2008, reducing the browser scrolling time dramatically.
In the simple case, I thought this is what stacks are for.
To my 'confusion' each time I included a picture in a stack (within a single project) the whole stack was added to the static album in my 'Collections' folder [remember Collections is not inside the same project.]
Last month it did not work this way, the evidence is my iPhone that syncs to a static album in 'Collections'. The iPhone shows a photo album of 20 photos that has now grown to 232 on Aperture due to the stacking of images that were included in an album. Four other iPhone sync albums have expanded also. Manually I have not added any images to the albums that expanded.
None of the referenced pictures have been moved, renamed or relocated. After recognizing the problem, I did rebuild the Aperture database, it is about 18GB without the images in it.
While cleaning-up, I did relocate some static albums from the top layer of the Project pane into the Collections folder, but even static albums that were already inside the folder (e.g. 'iPhoneSync2009' have seen increases in the number of images.
I had upgraded to Aperture 2.1.4 and Snow Leopard and synced to iPhone without problem, before I started stacking things.
So, admitting my confusion here:
- Why isn't this what stacks are for? (STACK and UNSTACK should create and delete, expandable and collapsible sets, inside a project or not)
- Apparently no one else see this behavior?
I'm totally open to suggestions of better organization or use of folders and stacks, I've tried to read every Aperture forum and blog I can find.

I would think it is a bug at the iTunes Store end. Essentially you are looking at web pages in the itunes store.

Creating filters for tRFC and qRFC (SM58).

I am trying to create filters for qRFC and tRFC as per OSS note 441269 - Setting up tRFC/qRFC monitoring in the alert monitor. When I try to create/copy owner I am getting error "_not in name space_" in task bar when I try to save the changes, I tried all kinds of naming convection still unable to proceed. Pls tell me how can I resolve this issue.

We used to 'reorganize' the tRFC/qRFC LUWs via sm58.
Your found note is ok and try to refer some other notes as well.

Overlay creator, movies and stacks

I'm building a page that contains a menu and stacked items, as you cant stack stack these stacks i'v made in to a multy page article with buttons to go to the other pages, giving the look of one page with buttons. now i want to ad a movie to these pages, but for some reason i cant ad the same movie to 6 pages that are in one article, why not, if i put it on anny page it works fine but when i try to do the same setup on page 2 it wont run on page one or page 2, it does work if i use a diffrent movie, so i could coppu the movie 6X but thats not a clean work around.
Also i made a image stack with grouped items and i try to get that movie in the upper corner in the range of the stack but that wont work, the movie will never play as the stack takes priority over the movie button, is there a way around this?
