Filters can be trimmed!

You do not have to split a layer to disable or turn on an effect or filter. I have a hard time remembering this remarkable feature of FCP.
The top bar in the filter Viewer represents the filter's influence on the clip. The in and out points for the filter are black bars at the beginning and end frames of the clip. Those two bars can be dragged along the viewer's timeline. This is particularly helpful and convenient when adding a filter like, say, Blink, but you only want it to be active for a second or two.
My thanks to Steve Martin over at Ken Stone's site for reminding me about this feature of FCP's interface.

I tried the "Internet Recovery" option and finally saw Mac OS X Mountain Lion's install page but after waiting 7 hours when I just thought its going to start installing, I got another progress bar with 36 hours remining time to download "Additional Components" then after progressing 2-3 hours, it shows "Unable to write installation something..., Contact Apple Care"
Then I accidently rebooted the machine and now it seems Internet Recovery don't work anymore, it shows "support.apple.com - 40 something!" error, and finally when I tried to reboot using Recovery HD, I found it's gone as-well!
To be honest, I don't know what to do now, I am and dissapointed... also I do not have any Apple Store nearby, there is an authorized country reseller almost 650/km far away from my residents and they even charges too high (like $250) for doing such repairs (as per phone conversation)
If anyone have any idea or anything to help me with, please do share- I'd be eternally grateful!

Or in PSE make the timings and transitions match the music track.

No. But you can do one, copy its settings, then seclect the rest and "Paste Audio Settings" to all of them all at once in a project.

I'm working in Illustrator 9 on Windows 7.
Can I trim around a path on an imported bitmap layer?
I've imported a layer from Photoshop and I have a triangle path on a sub-layer of that placed bitmap layer that I'd like to select around outside of and then trim around the path on the imported bitmap layer to make that bitmap layer the shape of my triangle path.
But when I select "Inverse" it is trying to select other paths outside my triangle path, so it selects only the bitmap layer and leaves me to delete only that entire bitmap layer.
I want to select my path, then have it trim around the outside of the path on my placed bitmap layer.

I was just writing back because that's what I figured. But my wavy line paths were very labor intensive when I created them in Photoshop so I was trying to copy and paste or import those in to Illustrator, but with no success.
Years ago I was able to transfer paths created in Illustrator to Photoshop, but I don't remember ever doing the opposite.
When I try to copy those complex, perfect sine-wave paths from Photoshop, I eventually get the message, "Could not export to clipboard because rectangle is empty." But actually I'm trying to copy the paths from a TIFF with a background layer made of the color waves, so I'm not sure about that message's accuracy... and anyway I'm trying to copy the paths, not the background layer. I right-click on the path and select-copy, but it doesn't copy back in to Illustrator.
I've also tried "placing"/importing the sine-wave path, but it only places the background layer from the Photoshop TIFF.
I've also tried simply dragging and dropping the path from Photoshop to Illustrator, but no go.
Is there a way to import my sine-wave path from Photoshop to Illustrator?

The Mail Filtering on my desk Macs works great. The filtering software built in OSX 10.5.4 mail sorts out 95% of the spam, automatically directing it to the Junk folder. This saves me a great amount time and frustration. And, it is accurate too.
My question is: Is there any way to receive similar filtering on my iPhone? With the new push email, I don't want to be forced to receive non-filtered spam throughout the day. I would appreciate some information and suggestions regarding effectively handling spam on the iPhone.

Can I trim without doing ANY transcoding?

I have video files in MOV and M4V which are H264. Those files play beautifully from a website but they are too long. I have QuickTime Player Pro 7.6.9 so I'm intending using it to edit them (by which I mean just trim them - no fiddling with anything else).
These MOV and M4V files have already been transcoded. When I "Export" them from QTP the quality seems to degrade. I've read that transcoding more than once may degrade the video quality. It looks as if every option available to Export them from QTP involves more transcoding of some sort.
Is there a way that I can edit (ie just trim) them in QTP but have it export the files exactly as they are now, without touching the coding at all?

Currently the file sizes are large. I was hoping that trimming to the few minutes I want would reduce the file size.
If you trim the clip properly before copying the trimmed portion to a new file container, only the desired content will be contained in the new MOV file making the file size smaller. How much smaller, of course, depends on how much of the clip you trim and remove.

No. What I said was that if you "mark" the content you wish to keep and then use the "Trim to Selection" option to create a "timeline" only containing the segment of the file you wish to keep, the, when you use the "Save As..." command, only the trimmed content will be copied to the new MOV file.
On the other hand, if you just mark the content without physically trimming it, then the entire movie will be copied to the new file along with the markers which only the QT Player, iTunes, etc. will then play correctly while apps like VLC will continue to play the whole file. In addition. If you use the "Save" command to keep the data in its original file container, then only the markers are saved and the file still contains all of the original data plus the newly added markers.
I repeat, to create a "smaller" file with only the trimmed data in it, you must mark, trim, and write the desired data to a new MOV file container. Thereafter you simply replace the current online files with the new one(s) you've created. You can then decide whether or not you want to keep or delete the original file and simply keep the new file.

I have a project where I need to make all my video clips the same height.
Some of the clips are in widescreen, and I'd like to trim the black from the top and bottom so that I maximise the height of the footage.
Can this be done in elements, and if not, are there any programs that you can do that in?

Glad that you found it. I use it constantly, as I often animate my Titles with Keyframed Effects, and will just Copy/Paste Attributes to all. Same for Effects that are common to multiple Video (or Audio) Clips.
One caveat: when planning on use it, do one Clip with the complete Effects line-up, then Copy. Select all other Clips that you wish to Paste Attributes to. If you have already added some Effects, beyond the Fixed Effects, you will get multiple instances of that/those Effect(s), i.e. if you have already added Color Correction to the destination Clips, an have Color Correction in your source Clip, you will likely get 2 instances of Color Correction. Plan ahead, so that you do not have to go back and Delete any duplicated Effects.

i want to check the clients status i mean whether the request is coming from new client or already using client , if clients request is new one then the filter has to redirect to some other login page and also if the request is asked to access the authenticated resource then also he want to force to redirect to login page.If the user is logged in and his session is not expired and if session is valid then he can access the requested url as per his role....can any one suggest the code plzzzzzzzzz

I don't know that this is the root cause of your problem, but it certainly could be. When comparing two strings, you need to use the .equals() method, not ==.
(except in the null case, where checking for null with == is perfectly okay).

Some other notes... use if/else if/else rather than a whole bunch of ifs, since all your statements are mutually exclusive. Maybe even put those lower ifs inside your outer "else" since you're obviously not going to reach them after a sendRedirect(). On that same note, place a return; after the sendRedirect() to state that the rest of the page need not be loaded/executed.

Can the trim size appear on the preflight report?

I would like to make a preflight report that includes the trim size of the pdf. This is included in the results portion of the preflight under Overview, however I'm not sure if I can get this on the pdf version. Is this possible?

How can I trim a HDV project???

Often I use only small sections of large imported HDV clips. With the DV video you can use the project trimmer and keep only the parts of the clips you want. The project trimmer doesn't trim the HDV files however. Is there any way around this?
PS I suppose one could capture and edit in DV and then trim the project. Then with the trimmed project you could take the trimmed clips offline and recapture them in HDV using the batch recapture.

Yes - and apart from the fact that it works reliably, it is no different to CS4. The "trimmed" clips are identical to the originals.
If you really are using a very small fraction of the captured clip, and hard drive space is short, a possible work-around is to export the used part of the capture from the timeline - with suitable handles - and then re-import the new clip.
