Final audio on DVD is awful. How come?

I'm really, really new to audio recording. Just bought a G-Track mic and am recording with Soundbooth on my MacBook Pro (for video production using Final Cut Express). My last project sounded GREAT during editing, as I listened to it on my desktop computer speakers plugged into my Mac. But, when I output the final project onto a DVD and watched it on my television, I could hardly make out the narration, and the music was terribly muffled.
I'm thinking that at least part of the problem is because the range of frequencies delivered by the tiny speakers built into my television (TV is old!) meant that the nice base sounds didn't come through. But, I really don't know what else I need to work on to get my sound better. What other factors would cause such a difference between listening from my editing/computer system and listening to the final production from the DVD through my television?
ANY advice you can offer will be very much appreciated.

Okay, I tried playing it on the Mac, and it sounds good. Probably not the best sound I've ever heard, but definitely better than on the television. It seems there is too much level on the voiceover, so I guess that's a good starting point for me to address. Listening to it this second time around, I'd say my problem is in the poor job I did on mixing. The fact that the television is old doesn't help (I guess professionally done sound works okay, but my poorly mixed sound doesn't cut it). Anyways, perhaps I've answered my own question. Basically, I need to work on my audio recording and mixing capabilities. There's so much to this video business! If you have any additional thoughts, Cowboy, I'd love to hear them. In any case, thanks for your input.

1. Try cleaning the CD, as per > How to Clean CD’s and DVD’s | Electronics
2. Try some other CDs to make sure that they are working.
Then if no CD's are working? You might try cleaning the Superdrive with a standard dry lens cleaning disc, but Apple recommends having the drive looked at by an AASP.

I don't know any way you can interrogate iDVD to reveal settings to the extent that you can in a Compressor project. What you could do is open up the show's VOB in MPEG STreamclip, go to File and Reveal Stream Information; that will at least give you some rudimentary info like average bit rate. Perhaps someone, with more iDVD experience, can chime in here.
The broader question is why use Compressor at all if your current workflow is doing the job to your satisfaction?
The value of Compressor is that it gives you control over the many parameters that affect size quality. and playability. The Compressor presets can give you a starting point for DVD delivery, Web, etc. From those presets, people typically experiment by adjusting the parameters until they get the desired results for their specific show. It's a little bit science and a little bit art. After experimenting, you may be able to get slightly better quality for the project you've successfully burned in iDVD by using Compressor and something likeToast…or maybe not.

I am reading this post in the iphoto for iOS forum. The iPad does not burn photos to a DVD. Perhaps you'll get some assistance if you posted in th general iPhoto forum.

ATR, just to make sure you understand me, all my video clips in my folders appear as the first frame of the video clip when I view my folders as (small, medium, large)icons instead of lists, when saved as .avi files but when saved as .mp4 files, those icons display as a graphic icon of filmstrip with a musical note on it. I do have various other methods to open with (quick time, windows media, winamp or real player) but prefer real player because I like it's quick and easy trimmer that comes along with it, since so many of my videos are just pet antics where you need to clip off the boring beginning and ends of the video.
I did go on a few of the icons and right clicked, Open With, and tried quick time and also Windows Media and it did nothing as far as how the file was saved for display, and they opened the same no matter which player I used...the actual video opens and plays right at it's first frame... but it's the way it is visually displayed in STORAGE that bugs me because it isn't immediately apparent to me what it is a video of (weddings, outside the house, pet antics)... it makes me have to actually title things and read titles where before I let it just be dates because I had the visual of that first frame as a reference. Obviously, this is a problem for unedited videos only, as anything I actually work with, I do give a title along with the date of the video.
I also just realized this seems to be the way ALL videos that are wrapped in .mp4 are displayed, as my bloggie camera's videos appear the same way. Now I know why! My other videos display as .avi's so I see the frame. Puzzle solved. Guess I'll just have to learn to live with it, as it seems to be how things display with the various formats.
Now I need to watch some tutorials to learn how this Premiere program works! It's all new to me, since this is the first time I've been able load any of my videos onto it. I haven't even been able to figure out how to trim on it yet!

The basic answer is that Apple has not programmed the capture routine with this capability. As such, you can always send QT feedback requesting this feature be added as a future enhancement.

I'm not sure if I got you right, but do you mean that it's like pausing...
I have never played an audio clip with java, but if this is the case, maybe you have to rewind the clip.

iTunes UK store PG rating, DVD from amazon is 12 rating? how come? different movies?
Looking to get this for my young son, checked on DVD and says 12 rating, whereas in iTunes UK store its a PG? so how come the difference? these ratings are very different ie PG and 12, (he's 6 btw).
so is iTunes store got all the nasty (good!!) bits out? why is this? is this common all the time? first time I've noticed

Hi, you don't mention the name of the film in question, but I would suspect that it is a slightly different cut, although it could, I suppose, be a data entry error at one store or the other. Ratings are set by the BBFC not the stores so the same title should match wherever you buy it from unless they are significantly different versions. You could search for the title at http://www.bbfc.co.uk/search/ to see if there is any more information.

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor. The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow. It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them. You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version). Personal preferences showing here.

You installed a hacked app, originally from the Mac App Store. It contains the receipt for a different app, downloaded using an account that you don't control. You need to identify and remove the hacked app.
Important: The app you need to remove may not be the one named in the update notice. For example, the App Store could prompt you to update "Angry Birds" or "Twitter," but the hacked app could be "Final Cut Pro." Don't make any assumptions about which app you're looking for. To find it, you must carry out a systematic search with Spotlight.
1. Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
2. In the Finder, press command-F to open a search window, or select

How come although iPads are getting more powerful, the iOS apps from apple are so mediocre and just not that great? We spend all this money for the latest ipad and all we get is these $5 video and music apps from apple. Why create the iOS platform and only offer so so apps like IMovie and GarageBand ? While other developers are offering much better apps like pinnacle studio for video, Cubasis and Auria for music production, apple has not showed much growth in terms of innovation. While there's nothing wrong with making an app like GarageBand where "anyone " can make a song, how about something for real musicians or an app not so basic as it get for video editing? After spending 0ver $700 on an ipad I'd be willing to spend more than $5 for a better video or audio app.

First, try a system reset although I can't give you any confidence. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

The obvious answer I think is that maybe you are not entering the letters and numbers correctly. I almost never get it right the first time when I use a gift card.
Try entering the code again - slowly and methodically. If it still doesn't work - look here for help.

One final thought - if you are using a gift card that was purchased in another country - say like you have a Canada gift card and you live in the U.S. - that card will not work in the U.S. iTunes store.

HT2404 I just clicked on Software Updates; BUT nothing shows what's happening? How come I can't see the updates & time it will take?

Help! I just got this Lion, and SO many changes & not necessarily for the better !
I went to the Apple icon, but "Software Updates" did not show ... though I had deferred installing some updates ...
Finally it showed up, I clicked on it, saw the updates to do - BUT when I clicked on install - the "box" that usually shows the updates & how long to install - just disappeared! I can't get to it to see what's next. (I have to leave soon & will turn off the mac)
What's happening? How come I can't see the updates as they are installed, & how much time it will take?
How do I know IF they have been installed? Is this the "new Normal" for Lion? Or is there a glitch in my mac somewhere?
How about updates you download from Apple (not bought) - they go to Downloads on the Sideboard, but are they installed automatically, & put where they belong too? Is there no more restart, etc.?
- I just went to Systems Preference, to see the "Installed Software" - shows they were ... but don't I have to restart anymore? Are all updates now automatically placed where they belong?
