Final Cut and Logic Studio

I have a MacBook with:
Processor-2.1 GHz Intel Core Duo
Memory-1 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
Question: A) Can I run Final Cut Studio 2 and/or Logic Studio
B) If not, will a timecapsule or mimi mac give me the power needed?

First of all, you'd need to install more RAM to run either program. Both programs require a MINIMUM of 1gb of RAM, so if you run either program, there'd be no RAM available for the OS or any background processes. So yes, it would slow your computer down to a crawl ... if not a crash.
There is no way to connect any Firewire device to the new MacBooks. So no FW control surfaces for Logic Studio and no way to connect a tape based camcorder or FW hard drive for external storage.
Motion and Color probably wouldn't even install due to the weak graphics card and shared RAM.
Also, keep in mind that Apple officially doesn't support FCS on the MacBook at all. Essentially, the MacBook is not designed for editing. But hey ... it's your money.

  • Final Cut and Logic Content Disks

Are the three audio content disks (not jam packs) from Final Cut Studio 2 and Logic Studio the same?

You're the second person to ask this question this week. I don't know if someone with Logic Studio could compare their bundled content to this list which is the content from FCS then we might be able to determine the answer.
The entire list is waaay tooo long so here is a subdirectory list you could compare. Only the Associated Production Music is a list of the contents since there is no subdirectories in that folder.
    =====FCS CONTENT LIST====

  • Final cut and logic studion on a mac book air?

I reflect on what computer I should buy if I use a lot of Logic Studio and Final Cut.
I have thought of Mac Book Pro for a while now, but then released the new Mac Book Air and it's very stylish and easy to carry.
    What do you think?

  • Photoshop, final cut, and logic

Hey im buying a new mac and as a student i want something affordable yet can help me work on projects. Im a Digital media major. i was wondering if final cut, photoshop or logic will run on a macbook or if id need to purchase a macbook pro. Thanks a ton
    pc   Windows XP

Agreed, that did come across as quite critical.
And it was, while sounding harsh, meant that way. I do agree with you that jonajonajona's post was not meant to mislead. The thing is, it is misleading when you take into account what the underlying question is. What the OP is really saying is "Please, please, please… tell me it's ok to buy a MacBook even though I know I shouldn't".
Usually software developers just omit non-supported hardware when listing their system requirements. Apple has taken it upon themselves to do the opposite and explicitly state the GMA950, and hence the MacBook, is NOT supported. You can't get any cleaer than Apple has been in this case. Given this, the question becomes more about what you can get away with and the inherent risks of buying a system with a GMA950 rather than straight compatibility.
Should it be ok to ignore that then?
PS Michael Flynn's post couldn't have been written better as to why only half of the answer was given.

  • FINAL CUT AND DVD STUDIO PRO 4

One quick question is it alright to transfer a project into final cut pro while you have a project in dvd studio pro 4 doing the asset incoding, It seems to be working ok but wasnt sure if that would mess up anything in the encoding,
    thanks Bill

It shouldn't make a diifference in the encoding. I usually use Compressor instead for a few reasons I can explain if you are interested. But in answer to your question, the encode should be fine under these circumstances. The only iissue you might expect to encounter would be dropped frames during playback in FCP, because the encoding process might be using the same drive, both reading and writing, and perhaps even the same files, as the media FCP is trying to play back. Shouldn't hurt anything, though.

  • Simple Q regarding Final Cut and DVD Studio Pro

Why can you not use .mov files exported through QuickTime Conversion in DVD Studio Pro? What is the best format to use .mov files exported through QuickTime Movie or avi files?

The point being made is why you are doing a QuickTime conversion?
The best practices workflow for many:
    1. Export self contained current settings audio and video;
    2. Open Compressor and assign the DVD preset for video consistent with the length of the video in minutes and the Dolby2 audio.
    3. Take the video m2v file and audio AC3 file and import those into DVD SP.
Do not use DVD SP to do the encoding because it lacks the controls Compressor does and forces the use of aiff audio.

    AH...good.
There is no limit on the times you can install it from the DVDs. There's just a limit as to being able to run it on multiple machines AT THE SAME TIME. If your old computer dies, or you sell it (please reformat the drive so they don't get FCP for free), then you can install on a new computer fine.  And you are allowed to install on (1) desktop and (1) laptop at the same time as well...but only use it on one machine at any given time. Meaning you can use it on the desktop at work, and then when away from the office, on your laptop.
Long story short...you can install it fine without any issues.

As Tom said the FCS forum is the better place to post the question.
Here is Apple's best practices doc for installing both on the same system.
BTW, FCP7 is part of the FCS 3 suite of apps.

  • Using still images with Final Cut (and the apple suite in general)

I have had a re-occuring and long term problem that has caused me many lost hours of head scratching and work arounds, and as of yet I have not been able to come up with a good solution.
Its to do with integrating still images with the Final Cut suite.
If I receive a high quality image from a client to use in their video and I then try importing it into Final Cut and animating it, it always ends up looking like a pile of ahem. Often I will get "swimming" lines appear across fine detail on the image, and parts of it will flicker as it moves across the screen. For instance, if I have a picture of some blinds or other fine detail (especially horizontal and vertical lines), when I add a grow and throw movement to it the detail will become very noisy - buzzing and flickering like mad.
I have found I can counter this by resizing the image in photoshop to a resolution closer to SD video (700w or 500h) - but I always end up losing detail, and the flickering and noise is only reduced, not eliminated. Other things that have helped are blur effects applied at a very low level, like 0.5 blur, so its not noticeable visually, but Final Cut seems to treat it differently and quieten the noise and flicker down.
However, all of these workarounds are ultimately still giving a reduced quality product.
Also, this problem is not necessarily constrained to Final Cut, I am currently fighting DVD Studio Pro because it is murdering the text quality in a stills slideshow I am creating - and in this situation there is no animation being applied. No matter what file type (psd, jpeg, tiff, png...) or size I output the text and images from Photoshop in, the moment DVD studio pro gets hold of it, it turns to cripe.
For a while I was putting it down to the fact that I usually edit in SD (PAL) formats, and there just wasn't the resolution available to reproduce fine detail. However, I do often see other people achieving pin-sharp fine detail on still images and text in SD formats (the Apple templates are a good example)
So, my question to you, oh great and high boffins, if you are dealing with still images and text, how do you do it? How do you work around any noise problems you have, and how do you produce those pin-sharp images (both moving and still) I see in other professional productions?
    Quad G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

still images with too high a resolution will always cause problems. this is due to the detail of the image being finer than the scanline of the tv can display ... obviously this will caise the image to flicker as these details alternately appear and disappear as and when the scanline can display them. as you have discovered, the answer is to apply a very small blur, the effect being that the detail is spread by the blur such that the scanline can dislay it correctly.
text issues are often rooted in the same problem ... unless the text is placed very carefully (whole even number on the y axis) then the quality may be impaired due to the resulting interlacing/scanline issues

  • Final Cut and Serial Number

I had Final Cut Studio 5.1 intalled on my Powerbook G4. Then, my computer was sent in and I was without for a month. So while it was away, I put Final Cut Pro on my home computer to finish my film for school. When I got my laptop back, I tried uninstalling Final Cut Pro on my home computer, but didn't have the installation disk, so I just simply trashed the 'Final Cut Studio System ID' on my home computer so that I couldn't use the program.
So, now Final Cut works fine on my Powerbook. But, I accidently updated to 5.1.4 - while my school computers are still on 5.1.2. So I wanted to uninstall Final Cut, and then re-install it so that the applications would be compatable. But, when I insert my Final Cut Studio Installation Disk, it asks for my serial number, which I put in - but the 'Continue' button never lights up.
I also went to the website to register my product so that I could download the 5.1.2 update...entered my serial number and it told me it was an invalid number.
I'm entering the exact same number in the exact same way that I originally did on my Powerbook. Is there anything I can do? The only time the serial number has ever been on another computer before was when it was on my home computer, but I hadn't registered it, and then I removed it - so my laptop is the only computer I have Final Cut on. Why isn't this working? It's quite frustrating when I need an edit for my class tomorrow and I can't work on it.
Thank you for any help, suggestions, or support.

That's good to know, thank you very much. I was wanting to use it on my G5 this Summer (same one I installed it in before).
I'm entering the fields exactly as I had originally entered them, and I'm using the right letter/number (O/0 or I/1) when applicable. But it still won't let me continue.
I even trashed the 'Final Cut Studio System ID' on my PowerBook, then opened Final Cut, it asked me for the serial number - I entered it, exactly as I had been trying with the disk, and it worked. But it still won't work on the installation disk.
Also, I did a bit of editing on the PowerBook (5.1.4) and then moved to my school's computers (5.1.2) expecting them not to be able to open the file, but it did. I know that 5.1 and 5.1.1 weren't compatable with 5.1.2, so how is 5.1.2 compatable with 5.1.4? Regardless, this is good news.

  • How to Uninstall older version of Final Cut and Motion

    Hello
I have a older academic version of Final Cut and Motion. I ordered a Full blown version of Final Cut Studio 2 that should arrive this week. How do I uninstall my old version of software? I don't want them conflicting with the new version.
My other question deals with performance. I'm running a Dual 2.5GHz G5 with 6G of ram. Video Board is the ATI x800XT. Will this system work for editing HDV or am I going to need to buy a new Intel based computer? I really don't want to spend 4K for a new system.
    Thanks

  • Final Cut Pro 2 Studio CORPORATE EDITION ???

i am looking to buy final cut from someone on craigslist - they say that it is a CORPORATE VERSION of FINAL CUT PRO 2 STUDIO - i asked if it was transferable and they said that i could not register it in my name but i would be able to upgrade it - is this true ?? - should i stay away

'Corporate' is a code word among warz dudes and dudettes. It's supposed to mean you can install it and not get caught for using an invalid serial number.
In this case, I suspect the seller is trying to give the impression the SN is a Volume License, usually purchased by corporations. That's why you would not be able to register it, and also the why you would not be able to upgrade it.
Run away from this one. It's a scam.

  • Apogee ensemble and logic studio

I got a new apple desktop pro quad 2.66 and Logic Studio.
I have been using a Motu 828mk11 and logic 7 pro.
I was considering using the Apogee Ensemble and was wondering if anyone using Studio has any luck with Ensemble and if they think the switch would be worth the investment.
I also Use an API A2D preamp with the digital outs.....any news on how that might work with Ensemble?
anyway, just a note, if anyone cares, the UAD Nevana X2 works really tightly with Logic Studio and its WORTH the purchase price. amazing.

    Respiro wrote:
    saved through it as wavs?
If you use outboard gear for mix and processing i.e you route out your Software Instruments thru some of the Apogee outputs (analog/optical or digital), process them using some external analog or DSP processors and route back the processed sound to the Apogee Inputs ( i.e Logic Mix track ), then the mix may be different, rather than the Logic native Bounce.
If you use Logic bounce, then Apogee is just a monitoring device as was mentioned before. I agree if you have several devices and play same (previously) bounced Logic audio file thru the different devices they may sound different - this the test the audio engineers make in the laboratories.
Personally I own several devices and I prefer to use one for final mix monitoring (which is most "true" not "sweet or pumped"), some for recording, other for internal DSP processing, depends on the situation...

  • Final Cut and Reinstall

    Hi,
3 hour project that I've been working on for months.
Experienced system very slow and crashing a lot. so I listened to Apple and cleaned up HD. In the process I deleted about 4 apps that I didn't think had anything to do with FCP. Since I've done that and ran a defrag of the HD FCP won't open any of my projects. I get "This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut" or "Wasn't able to open project" My whole system is running slow - get turning circle on everyting.
I'm thinking I need to uninstall my whole system as in the aps I deleted - garage band and I forgot the others - small programs that I think FC must have used relative to the path of my files in FC. What are your thoughts? If I uninstall I take it there are precautions so as not to lose projects. I have FCP the version before the last version, have a Mac OSx 10.6.8, 2.16 GHz INtel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAm. My project files are on external HDs. What do you think?
    Thanks,
    joe

What version of FCP are you running? fcp7
The Digital Rebellion stuff is great.
I do have Pro Maintenance Tools, which is $140 i think.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/promaintenance/
that has the 2 apps listed above, plus a project FCP repair tool,  corrupt clip finder, etc.
This is your only copy of the project? No, when search project on my external where all my files aree a folder of one of the latest versions comes up with numerous fcp files that were saved at different times and dates. That would be the autosave vault, but it's not in the folder autosave vault.
    No backups at all?
Are you sure the autosave lkocation hasnt been changed, and there might be versions somewhere else?
Did you add any new pugins at all? Did you do any software updates before things went south? NO
Without knowing what you deleted then you might need to wipe the system & re-install everything.
if you do this remeber to BU your files & any apps or plugins that are digital files & not on install discs that you have bought, or downloaded.
Cloning the HD as you said in your last email will take care of this?

  • Final Cut and Motion Roundtripping- FCS2 vs FCS3

I have been getting slow performance and general inefficiency working with Motion files inside of Final Cut with FCS2. I'm working on an Intel based MacBook Pro with 3GB of Ram and Radeon x1600 graphics card. I have been working in HDV1080p30 and only work within one application at a time (I close Motion before going to Final Cut and vice versa).
My question is: Can I expect better performance by upgrading from FCS2 to FCS3 on the same system? I will upgrade immediately if my system can handle the new Final Cut Studio more efficiently.

There are so many possibilities as to why your computer isn't as fast as you want it to be, or as fast as it once was. The amount of data on your drives, overhead of the OS, port malfunction, corrupt preferences, corrupt files on drives (even files you're not using can affect performance, just by being there), age of computer, conflicting 3rd party apps and plug-ins, failing hard drive, failing processor, failing graphics card, failing SMC or PMU, and many many more. There is no way to tell if upgrading to a new version of any software is going to fix your problem. Snow Leopard has less overhead than Leopard, so a new OS might help, but unless you have an Intel Mac, you can't do this.
My guess is, just buying a new set of apps is not the way to go. You need to bench test your machine and find out what, if anything, is misbehaving, and start from there. If it's as simple as not going as fast as you want it to go, but nothing is wrong, then you either need to accept that you're operating at full capacity, or buy a new computer.
