Final Cut breaks up video into many separate segments when digitizing --

I'm sure I'm not the only person who's encountered this problem. I'm in the process of digitizing a whole slew of HD video tapes and almost all of them have done so exactly as they should. The only exception is a couple of tapes that are fragmenting into many separate files as they digitize, so instead of one nice big file that can easily be scrolled through in Final Cut, I'm getting three or four dozen different smaller video files, all of which are readable and work but it's obviously not as easy to edit something like that.
Does anyone know why this is happening and how, if possible, to correct it? Is it a video camera setting that was used in the shooting? Or is it some setting in Final Cut that I can change? Or is it merely that the time code on it is corrupt or the tape is somewhat damaged?
Thanks in advance.

When you capture HDV, Final Cut Pro automatically generates a new media file at the point of each scene break. The chosen option in the On timecode break pop-up menu determines how timecode breaks affect the capture; Final Cut Pro disregards the Warn After Capture option to avoid capturing media files that contain breaks in the middle of an MPEG-2 GOP (Group of Pictures).
To determine how scene and timecode breaks are handled when you capture HDV:
Choose Final Cut Pro > User Preferences, then click the General tab.
Choose one of the following options (described below) from the On timecode break pop-up menu:
Make New Clip
This is the default option. Whenever Final Cut Pro detects a scene or timecode break during capture, it finishes writing the current media file to disk and then begins capturing a new media file. It also creates a corresponding clip for each new media file in the Browser. To ensure that all new media files and clips have unique names, it appends a number to the filename of each new media file and clip generated by scene and timecode break detection.
You don't want this checked.
The reference is for FCP 5, but should work in 6

When using Final Cut Express, the video in the Viewer window looks fine, but when I insert the video into the Canvas Timeline it appears to lose resolution, and look fuzzy and blurry. Are there preferences or settings for the Timeline that cause this?

Thanks David. I had to convert the mts file to Quick Time (using AunSoft Conversion software) before I could import it into Final Cut Express. And I made sure I kept the size of movie (720 X 480 with letterbox) to compliment what I set my Panaconic AVCCAM video recorder at (720/60). Even after I fully render it, it still looks fuzzy in the Canvas window at the right that plays what I have editing down in the Timeline. A friend that edits some using Final Cut Pro helped me to narrow things down to this problem. This is also wierd. If my Viewer window at the left is set to 200% to get the person's head the same size in the Canvas window at the right we needed to put it to 400%. Does this make any sense. We think we need to control the Time line resolution somehow but cannot find any options from my manual, or the help, or in the various drop down menus. Do you have any clue? What is going on?

  • Using Final Cut Express for video editing without attaching external device

    Hello,
I am a newbie to Final Cut Express as well as Mac's in general. I am wanting to use Final Cut Express for video editing of files, but without an attached camera. Is there any way to have Final Cut Express startup without having it prompt for an external A/V device? I just want to do some basic editing and use the chroma key feature. Can anyone help?
    Greatly Appreciated,

    Hi Zak,
Unfortunately, I've tried that and I get into an issue that was addressed in this posting: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=836595&tstart=120 where FCE will show the splash screen and then the program doesn't start. I then have to delete FCE preferences and then I will get the Easy Setup dialog box prompt me again for choosing the external device.
I am looking for a way to use FCE for video editing of files that I already have on my computer that I created using iClone software and is in .avi, or .mp4 format. I get FCE to work one time without the external device actually being attached, but then when restarting the program I get the dialog box asking for the external device and if it's not there, the program just closes, and to get it to work again, I have to delete the preference files and go through the process all over again which is time consuming especially when this is at work. If FCE is not the right program, can anyone suggest a good video editing program that doesn't require an external device and is as good or better than FCE?
Thanks again for your help and support,

Is there a way to store videos into a separate album right after you shoot it on iPhone camera?
Finding videos in iPhone photo album requiers you to search through everything on your album. Is there a way to create separate video album or have them automatically save to a dedicated video album?
It's a pain finding videos when you use the camera so much and as it is I'm constantly organizing the photos.

Not even an app that might do this?

  • How do I stop Final Cut from seperating video on timecode breaks?

Working on a dive video which has many start/stops breaking time code and final cut wants to create a new video for each one, how do I stop it from doing that?  I want just one long video, timecode breaks and all.

You can control whether start/stop indicators create individual media files by selecting or deselecting the “Create new clip on Start/Stop” checkbox in the Clip Settings tab of the Log and Capture window.
In the General tab of the User Preferences window, the option you choose from the “On timecode break” pop-up menu determines how timecode breaks affect capture, but the Warn After Capture option is disregarded to avoid capturing media files that contain breaks in the middle of an MPEG-2 GOP.
To choose how Final Cut Pro handles start/stop detection when capturing HDV footage
If you have not already done so, choose Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup, choose HDV from the Format pop-up menu, and then choose an Easy Setup from the Use pop-up menu.
Choose File > Log and Capture (or press Command-8), then click Clip Settings.
Select or deselect the “Create new clip on Start/Stop” checkbox to turn start/stop detection on or off:
Start/Stop detection on: When the checkbox is selected, a new media file and corresponding clip are created each time Final Cut Pro detects start/stop indicators in the incoming HDV stream.
Start/Stop detection off: When the checkbox is deselected, one continuous media file and corresponding clip are created, and start/stop indicators are ignored.
Note: The option to turn off start/stop detection is not available when capturing footage shot on a JVC HDV camcorder because the nature of the MPEG-2 stream requires creation of a new media file at each start/stop indicator.

  • HT4115 How can I get my Final Cut Express 4 projects into Final Cut Pro X?

I'm going to be switching to OSX Lion, and will have to update Final Cut, since express won't run on Lion. Thus I have to get X. With the new 64-bit Pro X is there a way to open my past projects? I know that at one time you could open up older versions of FC in higher and newer versions. I've heard about Assisted Editing's 7toX for Final Cut Pro application that allows you to convert your old FCP 7 files to be used in FCP X. Does anyone know of the best way I can assure not loosing all my current work?

You can't import FCE projects into FCP X but you can import the media.
You may well find that FCE will work on Lion.
    It seems OK on mine.
Why do you want to go to Lion? Snow Leopard is probably a better OS in many ways.

  • How can I transfer Final Cut Pro 7 projects into Adobe Premiere?

I produced a whole whack of videos in FCP7. Then I got a new Apple Quad Core Intel Mac about a year ago... To find that FCP7 was no longer even usable. I still have FCP 7 on my Intel Core 2 Duo Apple Powerbook. I've read that I can export FCP7 XML files and import them into Premiere, but when I do this Premiere just crashes. This is a major pain in the AS%. Can anybody help me here?? What is the most elegant simple solution that will allow me to get back to work, on my new computer, using the FCP 7 material? Thanks

You need the Final Cut Studio forum.
This is just for FCP X.

  • Final Cut Express issues: Video and no audio

Ok.. sorry about before. I posted in someone elses message, for that I'm sorry.
My name is Justin Smith. I'm a freelance videographer out in Kansas. I have a brand new Macbook Pro. I'm shooting with a Dvx-100. I took my camera and tried to import video into Final Cut Express. When the short video clip was finished capturing, I tried putting it to the timeline, but only the video was added. So I have video, no audio and a bunch of questions. How do I get my orginal audio from the tape onto the timeline? Also, I have a question about importing audio from say Itunes. I can import the song fine, But when I lay the track down on the timeline, I'm getting a continuous beep noise. I read the FAQ and it told me I have to convert the track to AIFF? How do I do this?

As for importing audio from iTunes, yes, you must convert it to AIFF first. iTunes can do this unless you purchased the songs from the iTunes Music Store. If you did, they are protected AAC files and won't convert. There are ways to do it but since it most likely violates the copyright, no one on this forum can legally tell you how to do it.
If they are not protected, then go to iTunes preferences, select the Advanced icon at the top and click the Importing tab. Select AIFF encoder from the "Import Using" popup menu and make sure the settings are 48khz. Then select the song from the library and choose (from the menu bar) Advanced->Convert Selection To AIFF. A new music file in AIFF format will appear in your library.
Another way is to use Quicktime Pro (the paid version of Quicktime). Open the music file in Quicktime, choose Export and select AIFF, 48Khz, 16bit for the format. Again, this won't work if its an iTunes protected file.

  • Final Cut - Syncronizing audio/video

    Hello.
I just started making small video for my band in Final Cut Pro. One thing witch
teases me is that i can't move the clip or audio precise enough. It's like final cut is set to
move the clip in frames. I had turned off the snapping option - This helps a little, but not enough.
    Any suggestions?

  • HT5148 Final Cut Pro and video conversion

My question is about converting an WMV to a MOV file. WMV does not load into iMovie. Instead of me purchasing 2 different programs, does Final Cut Pro also convert files? Can I load a WMV file into Final Cut Pro

I sent another reply but to myself by accident, :
OK Tom, if you don't mind I have one more question. I'm new to editing so I'm trying to figure out my options. I'm currentlu using iMovie to edit videso and I've mastered that pretty well. I'm looking to purchase Final Cut Pro to try and do more advanced editing.  Right now I'm editing a lot of sports recruiting videos. I need to put an arrow or some kind of mark over the person that needs to be followed during the game. Do I have that option with Final Cut?

  • Final Cut Express moving videos off hard drive

So I started capturing some footage on my laptop because I didn't have an external drive available. I finished the project, and now I'm back home with my external drive. My internal drive had 1.5 gigs free now, and I want to move all the footage I captured from FCE onto the external.
I know iMovie has an option to export the project and all the files into a single file. Does FCE have an option like this, or do I need to go through finder to where it saved all the footage and move them like that? How can I do this without losing all the links and having to reconnect my media...
hopefully this all makes sense, I've never really used FCE

    Hello Drew,
FCE doesn't have that option. You will have to use the Finder to copy the folders/files to your external drive and yes you will have to Reconnect Media after moving the files.
Be sure your external drive is formatted as Mac OS Extended and is connected via Firewire.
In FCE, close your Project. Then in FCE preferences reset your scratch disk location to the new Final Cut Express Documents folder on your external drive. Then exit FCE.
The default FCE scratch disk location is /Users/yourusername/Final Cut Express Documents. Normally your FCE project file and related material is in this folder. Under it you will find the following folders:
    Autosave Vault
    Capture Scratch
    Render Files
    Waveform Cache
    Thumbnail Cache
and there may be an Audio Render Files folder too
At this point you should be able to find a Final Cut Express Documents folder on your external drive; it should have automatically been created when you reset your FCE preferences earlier, along with an Autosave Vault and a Capture Scratch folder. Copy the files from your internal drive's Autosave Vault and Capture Scratch folders to the corresponding new folders on your external drive. Don't bother copying the render files or cache files - it will be better to re-render after you move your project. Also, if you have any other source media such as photos or music, copy them to a new folder on your external drive. Keep your FCE project file on your internal hard drive but do make a backup copy of it somewhere.
After copying everything, verify & double check that you have good copies of your clips on your external drive because the next step is to delete the originals of your captured clips that are on your internal drive. Don't delete any folders, just the captured clips themselves ... and all the render files. This is necessary so that when you reopen your FCE project it will be forced to reconnect media and you can point it to the new location on your external drive. Otherwise it will just continue to use the clips that are on your internal drive.
Then reopen your Project File that you left on your internal drive and reconnect media when prompted.

  • Final Cut Pro - Two Video Cards - Display Turns White

    MacPro Xeon 2.0GHz
    3 Gig Ram
    Two nVidia 7300 Video Cards
Two CRT Monitors and One HDTV
I have two CRT monitors attached to my original nVidia card. I recently installed a second video card and attached a third monitor to my DVI output (on the second video card)
I tell Final Cut Pro to display video on third monitor as full screen output. I can see my 720p (or 480p) display. When I press play, the entire screen turns White. (I've tried a CRT monitor, and my LCD HDTV via HDMI to DVI).
If I remove my Right CRT monitor from my graphics card and attach my HDTV (giving me one monitor and one HDTV) I can get full screen 720p play back. But I don't want to edit with one monitor! I am wanting to have my two monitor editing setup with the third monitor as my full screen display (720p).
Why does three monitors result in a white frame for playback? Do I need to configure something?
